It will be a glittering event that promises to be the highlight of Denver’s fundraising season. I encourage you to buy your tickets right away because this is one train you won’t want to miss. David McReynolds, Chair, Denver Health Foundation Board of Directors Did somebody say, “Train”? Yes, that’s right. The Grammy Award-winning band, Train, will be providing entertainment for dinner guests and ticket holders at the National Western Events Center. We have Foundation board member Chuck Morris to thank for this. In his capacity as impressario and President of AEG Live Rocky Mountains and from his experience in booking concerts with the world’s elite performers, he signed the band for this appearance. Train will be coming to Denver just for us. But the stars of the evening will be our honorees, Jim and Pam Crowe, longtime supporters of Denver Health. A hard-working leadership team for NightShine intends to make this a truly significant financial success. I extend my gratitude to Pat Hamill of Oakwood Homes, who will chair the event. The Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to be joined by four outstanding new members: Don Daboub, Dr. Art Gonzalez, Kathy Klugman and Dr. Phil Mehler. Please take some time to read about them on pages 4 and 5. As always, your support for the Denver Health Foundation is deeply appreciated. Warmly, David McReynolds 2 www.denverhealthfoundation.org Save the Dates! As they travelled down Colfax Avenue, they witnessed our son, Dan, fall from a ladder from a height of about 30 feet. Dan landed head first, onto the sidewalk. His body somersaulted down to the ground landing his lower torso in the street with his legs settling behind the rear wheels of a parked car. Without hesitating Dr. Ciarallo, pulled his car over to the sidewalk. Telling his children to stay in the car, he ran to help Dan. In a matter of seconds, he dialed 911 and initiated emergency response measures. Dan was not breathing. Our son was “blue and bleeding from the head and mouth.” a cane, and attending to his own ADL with minimal assistance. As part of his therapy at Craig, he walks to a nearby store to buy groceries. He has cooked breakfast for his therapists, and taught a number of staff to play “Settlers of Catan” and other strategy games. He also made a pillow for his friend who visits him daily. Everyone has taken notice of how well Dan is progressing toward recovery of his cognitive functioning. The rehab team is cautiously optimistic that Dan can make a full recovery over time and with continued therapy. They also caution repeatedly that “he looks great from a galloping horse” and it is true. Dan will need several more months of recovery before he can return to work and an independent life. As Dr. Ciarallo re-established Dan’s airway he recruited a man nearby to stabilize Dan’s neck. The two of them kept Dan’s airway clear and kept him still until the ambulance arrived. Dr. Ciarallo talked to Dan; keeping him calm while assessing his neuro status and other injuries. Dan responded to these efforts. He started to awaken and by the time the ambulance arrived he was able to say his name. The ambulance got Dan to the Emergency Department (ED) at Denver Health within 20 minutes after Dan’s fall! But the good news is that he has that opportunity. Dan is amazing; we almost like the newer version better! He’s less ornery :-). He strives daily, and graciously, to master any test or task given to him. He has been given a second chance at life and he is going after it. On December 7th we will bring him home to continue outpatient therapy. We believe that Dan’s remarkable recovery is the result of the fast work and excellent care by all the people who attended to him on October 13th and the days that followed. We are especially grateful to the emergency But Dr. Ciarallo, didn’t stop there. While medical system that we have in our country the ambulance was transporting Dan to and to Dr. Ciarallo, a first responder who the hospital, Dr. Ciarallo called the E.D. didn’t hesitate to help, who saved the life to provide his account of the fall and of a stranger and protected him from the assessment of Dan’s situation. Then he damaging effects of prolonged anoxia, who called the O.R. and SICU to alert them brought the ambulance on-site so quickly, Dr. Christopher Ciarallo that a neuro trauma case was en-route and and who took it upon himself to provide an Dan would need their services. When he had eye-witness report to the ED that no one done all he could, Dr. Ciarallo returned to his else could have done because no one else own family’s needs and to his own day. He and his family were was with Dan at the time of the accident, and who reached out starting a four day vacation that day! to the OR and SICU trauma teams because he knew Dan needed them quickly. Time mattered in Dan’s case and we believe his Dan had serious injuries, including a right epidural hematoma, actions and the care that followed underlie the story of Dan’s a left temporal hematoma, an occipital condylar fracture among remarkable recovery. other skull fractures and a shattered left knee cap. None-the-less, Dr. Fried was able to perform a craniotomy on Dan in just 90 So how do we say thank you all for giving Dan back to us? It is minutes after his arrival in the ED. Dan went on to spend a week just not possible to convey the depth of our gratitude to Dr Chris in Denver Health’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU), a week Ciarallo, Dr. Walter Biffl, Dr. Herbert Fried, Dr. Susan Ladleyin the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) and a weekend on the regular O’Brien, Dr. Josh S (Senior Resident); Leigh Ann Metscher and unit before being transferred to Craig Hospital for rehabilitation of Michael Hanson from Social Services; Amanda Karen, Audrey, his brain, and other, injuries.
