From the Chairman
Greetings,
ith great pleasure and anticipation, the Denver Health
Foundation announces plans for our 2013 annual NightShine
Gala on Saturday evening, April 27, 2013. It will be a glittering
event that promises to be the highlight of Denver’s fundraising
season. I encourage you to buy your tickets right away because this is one
train you won’t want to miss.
David McReynolds, Chair,
Denver Health Foundation
Board of Directors
Did somebody say, “Train”? Yes, that’s right. The Grammy Award-winning
band, Train, will be providing entertainment for dinner guests and ticket
holders at the National Western Events Center. We have Foundation board
member Chuck Morris to thank for this. In his capacity as impressario
and President of AEG Live Rocky Mountains and from his experience in
booking concerts with the world’s elite performers, he signed the band for
this appearance.
Train will be coming to Denver just for us. But the stars of the evening
will be our honorees, Jim and Pam Crowe, longtime supporters of Denver
Health. A hard-working leadership team for NightShine intends to make
this a truly significant financial success. I extend my gratitude to Pat
Hamill of Oakwood Homes, who will chair the event.
The Foundation Board of Directors is pleased to be joined by four
outstanding new members: Don Daboub, Dr. Art Gonzalez, Kathy Klugman
and Dr. Phil Mehler. Please take some time to read about them on pages
4 and 5.
As always, your support for the Denver Health Foundation is deeply
appreciated.
Warmly,
David McReynolds

NATIONAL WESTERN EVENTS CENTER
he annual NightShine Gala will be held on the evening of April 27,
2013 at the National Western Events Center, where guests will
be ALL ABOARD FOR TRAIN – the Grammy Award-winning band
Train, that is. The pop rock band from San Francisco has energized
the airwaves with mega-hits like “Calling All Angels,” “Drops of Jupiter (Tell
Me)” and “Meet Virginia.” “Hey Soul Sister,” released in 2009, became the
best-selling single in Columbia Records’ history and solidified the band’s
place in rock-n-roll history.
The black-tie evening will honor James Q. and Pamela Crowe, two incredible
supporters who have given their time, energy and talents to help make
Denver Health what it is. Pat Hamill of Oakwood Homes will chair the event.
At NightShine, Denver Health’s many supporters come together to celebrate Denver’s most comprehensive and successful health system.
Denver Health shines as a national model of health care success, featuring nationally-ranked specialties like trauma, orthopaedics,
infectious disease, complications due to eating disorders and urology. Yet we still provide the bulk of the city’s uncompensated care,
totaling more than $450 million last year alone. One in three of our city’s residents receive care from Denver Health, and 40 percent of
Denver’s babies are born here. Our School-Based Health Centers care for thousands of public school students, and each year hundreds of
doctors and nurses receive training with us. Denver Health is our community’s go-to resource when it comes to helping people heal and
lead better lives. You can help us continue this vital work by sponsoring a table and bidding on live auction items at the Gala.

Voice of the Patient
A
little after noon on Saturday, October 13, 2012,
Dr. Christopher Ciarallo and his two children were
running an errand to the post office. As they travelled
down Colfax Avenue, they witnessed our son, Dan, fall
from a ladder from a height of about 30 feet. Dan landed head
first, onto the sidewalk. His body somersaulted down to the
ground landing his lower torso in the street with his legs settling
behind the rear wheels of a parked car.
Without hesitating Dr. Ciarallo, pulled his car over to the sidewalk.
Telling his children to stay in the car, he ran to help Dan. In
a matter of seconds, he dialed 911 and initiated emergency
response measures. Dan was not breathing. Our son was “blue
and bleeding from the head and mouth.”
a cane, and attending to his own ADL with minimal assistance.
As part of his therapy at Craig, he walks to a nearby store to buy
groceries. He has cooked breakfast for his therapists, and taught
a number of staff to play “Settlers of Catan” and other strategy
games. He also made a pillow for his friend who visits him daily.
Everyone has taken notice of how well Dan is progressing toward
recovery of his cognitive functioning. The rehab team is cautiously
optimistic that Dan can make a full recovery over time and with
continued therapy. They also caution repeatedly that “he looks
great from a galloping horse” and it is true. Dan will need several
more months of recovery before he can return to work and an
independent life.
As Dr. Ciarallo re-established Dan’s airway
he recruited a man nearby to stabilize Dan’s
neck. The two of them kept Dan’s airway
clear and kept him still until the ambulance
arrived. Dr. Ciarallo talked to Dan; keeping
him calm while assessing his neuro status
and other injuries. Dan responded to these
efforts. He started to awaken and by the
time the ambulance arrived he was able to
say his name. The ambulance got Dan to
the Emergency Department (ED) at Denver
Health within 20 minutes after Dan’s fall!
But the good news is that he has that
opportunity. Dan is amazing; we almost
like the newer version better! He’s less
ornery :-). He strives daily, and graciously,
to master any test or task given to him. He
has been given a second chance at life and
he is going after it. On December 7th we
will bring him home to continue outpatient
therapy.
We believe that Dan’s remarkable recovery
is the result of the fast work and excellent
care by all the people who attended to him

We are especially grateful to the emergency

Hot Rocks VIP Preview Party
We stoked the fires for the summer’s hottest party with a Hot Rocks
Griller Challenge VIP Preview party held on February 5, 2013 at Elway’s
in Cherry Creek. Jamey Fader from Lola, Goose Sorenson from Solera,
Tyler Wiard and Aniedra Nichols from Elway’s Cherry Creek, and Sean
Yontz from El Diablo created some tasty dishes that gave the private
party guests a taste of what to expect on June 12, 2013 at the Hot
Rocks Griller Challenge. Unbelievable tastings came by way of Patron
Tequila and Ultimat Vodka.
This first chance for our VIPs to purchase tickets, tables and
sponsorships to the ultimate summer party, and to raise awareness and
funds for Denver Health Foundation’s men’s health programs, not only
captured the palates of Denver’s hotshots, but had great energy and
forward momentum.
