Drop Off Place your registration form and payment in a sealed envelope and put it in the drop box by the front door of City Hall. After that, no refunds will be given unless the program is canceled/postponed or if the enrollee is unable to participate because of unforeseen medical reasons. Cancellations Programs that are canceled or postponed due to weather conditions, or other unforeseen circumstances beyond our control will be announced as soon as possible. Please call 712-707-4888, or visit OrangeCityIowa.com. A legal guardian is asked to pick up their children from the program site as quickly as possible if adverse weather conditions occur. Announcements will attempt to be made at least one hour prior to the scheduled start time for an activity. Fee Payment & Returned Checks All fees must be paid at the time of registration. Fees may be paid in cash or check—credit card for online registrations. Checks should be made payable to City of Orange City. There is a $25 fee for any returned check. If a check is returned, both the amount of the check and the returned check charge must be covered in cash. Registrations will be processed by random selection daily. Unless we inform you otherwise, you are registered for your first choice. Checks are payable to: City of Orange City. All fees must be paid in full. Registrations with incorrect fees will be notified by telephone and held from processing until the correct fee is paid. Payments can be made online with a credit card. Phone registrations are not accepted for any programs. All programs are filled on a first come/first serve basis, so please register early. Late registrations may be accepted after a class or activity has started if space is available. Late registrations will have a $10 fee applied after May 31. (These fees will not be waived for any reason) Pool Passes Purchase a season or budget pass at the Orange City Municipal Swimming Pool the first week of pool season starting at 12:30 pm. Pass holders will have a picture taken and a key fob assigned to them. Fobs will be reused each year. 4 Pool Closings Pool supervisors will close the pool in case of the following: • lightning or threatening weather • water or air temp being too low (ex. 65 degree day) • bodily fluids spilled into the pool In case of a pool closing for any reason, there will be a message left on the swimming pool phone 712-707-2500 Pool Rules Pool rules will be observed by everyone in order to maintain a safe swimming environment. These rules can be found in each restroom and posted on the guardhouse walls. Please make sure you and your child are aware of these rules before entering the pool area. If your child is not tall enough to be on the slide or on the diving boards, they will be allowed to complete a swim test and receive a wristband to wear at the pool for the summer. Ask a manager, supervisor, or lifeguard for details. Dates, times, and details are listed below and will be posted at the pool throughout the summer. The first and last Saturday of the season, May 3 and August 30, anyone can get into the pool for $1. Family Night Come to the pool on July 25 for a day of fun food and prizes! Register to win! Music, games and food!! Don‘t miss out on this fun day! Every Monday and Friday night, after 6:00pm, all summer long, parents swim free when they come with the kids! Christmas in July Dog Swim Floatie Fridays Every Friday night, all summer long, floating beach toys will be allowed after 6:00pm! Please limit raft size to under 4‘X6‘. Toys will be subject to pool management‘s discretion. Pool finale! Bring your dog for a dip on a day to be announced after the pool is closed for the season. Watch the website and Advisor for details. aquatic fitness Aqua Zumba Splash your way into shape with a low impact aquatic exercise. Aqua Zumba blends cardio conditioning and body toning for an exilarating workout. Starts June 3. Tuesdays & Thursdays: Starting June 3 7:00-8:00pm $5 per class Water Aerobics Water aerobics is the fat-burning, metabolism-raising, exercise program that tones and strengthens the entire body. Monday, Wednesday, Friday $3 per class or 10 classes for $25 12:15-12:45pm •No swimming skills needed. •Suitable for all ages. Must be at least 15 to attend class. •Work at your own pace. •Easy on the joints. •Water resistance tones muscles and builds bones. •A good cardiovascular workout for fat burning, lowering blood pressure, and lowering cholesterol. • Pre-registration will be needed to develop class schedules. •Classes need a minimum of three participants. •Pool membership not needed to participate. •Pool temperature 78–82° Lap Swimming The pool is open for adult lap swimming. Please contact Rachel Franklin or Mitch Aalbers for pool rentals at 712-707-2500 or 712-707-9494. 2014 orange city summer recreation 5 swimming lessons The Orange City Municipal Aquatic Facility will offer group lessons. These lessons are taught by certified Water Safety Instructors following the current American Red Cross program. Lesson sign-ups can occur at the pool once open for the season with no late fees. Fees must be paid at time of registration. Fees cannot be waived. Session Dates & Times Attendance Levels 1-5 are offered in all three session, MondayThursday for two weeks. Parents-child aquatics are offered in session 2 and 3, Monday-Thursday for one week. (Fridays will be a make-up day if needed) Regular attendance is required. Advanced levels—Level VI, Basic Water Rescue, and Guard Start—ONLY offered during session 2 and 3 for 1 or 2 weeks depending on class size. Class attendance is important. If parents feel it is necessary for a child not to go in the water on a particular day, they should send a note for the instructor along with the child. It is important for the child to attend class even if they will not be entering the water. Designed for children 18 months to 4 years. Level 1 $20 45 min/day—Introduction to water skills. Orient to aquatic environment and create a sound foundation for aquatic and safety skills. Recommended ages 4–6 Level II $20 45 min/day—Fundamental aquatic skills. Teaches fundamental aquatic locomotion and safety skills. Recommended ages 4–7 Level III $20 45 min/day—Stroke development. Increase swimming competency and practice safety and non-swimming rescue skills. Recommended ages 6–9 Level IV $20 45 min/day—Stroke improvement. Develops confidence in the strokes learned and to improve other aquatic skills. Recommended ages 7–10 Level V $20 45 min/day—Stroke refinement. Stroke refinement plus introduction of butterfly, surface dives and spring board diving. Recommended ages 8–12 Level VI $20 Swimming and skill proficiency. Develop maximum efficiency and endurance for strokes and other aquatic activities. Recommended ages 10–13 Basic Water Rescue $20 Skills and information will be taught to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies. This course will also prepare individuals for aquatic emergencies by teaching them how to protect themselves while assisting others. Students will be certified as a shallow water guard. Recommended ages 12+ GuardStart $20 A stepping stone between Basic Water Rescue and Lifeguard Training. This program will introduce students to the skills needed for entry to the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Course. Class will focus on communication and decision making skills as well as the basic responsibilities of a lifeguard. Recommended ages 12-14 The GuardStart program involves a significant amount of physical activity. Before entering the program, participants must demonstrate these skills: • Swim the front crawl 25 yards continuously while breathing to the front or side. • Tread water for 1 minute using arms and legs. • Submerge and swim a distance of 10 feet under water. other opportunities Lifeguard Training Participants must have completed all previous levels of the Learn To Swim Program, be at least 15 years old and are interested in potential job opportunities in water safety and aquatics. Water Safety Instructor Training Participants must be at least 15 years old and be interested in potential job opportunities in water safety and aquatics. Private Lessons Private lessons are available by arrangement with a certified Water Safety Instructor. These lessons are typically held for five days, 25 minutes each. Available times are Monday–Friday at 11:45am–1:00pm. $12/lesson or $60/week 2014 orange city summer recreation 7 youth programs Baton$15 Taekwondo Twirlers will learn basic baton skills. Batons are not provided. Learn self-defense, develop self-confidence, discipline, agility, flexibility, and physical fitness. Chief Instructor is Harlan Hubers—5th degree black belt. Roller Hockey Sports Central is an excellent opportunity to learn various sports. We will be introducing four different sports in the six weeks of the Summer recreation season. Basketball, volleyball, track, baseball, and softball. Enjoy the summer sport fun! Monday and Wednesday; June 2–July 9 Age 4–5 9:00 to 9:45am Location: Pool Shelter House In-line skaters will learn the basic skills of roller hockey. Each participant must bring their own equipment: roller blades, hockey stick, kneepads, and helmet. Roller hockey balls will be provided. Monday and Wednesday; June 2–July 9 Grade 2–4 9:00–10:00am $15 Tennis$15 The players will learn tennis rules, different strokes and serving, and how to keep score through a variety of drills and fun games. Each youth needs to bring their own racket, and tennis balls will be provided. At the end of lessons the kids will have the opportunity to participate in a small tournament to practice playing a real game against one another. Our dance classes are the perfect way to introduce your child to the world of dance without having the high costs like other dance studios. We pride ourselves on providing a low stress, no pressure environment where young dancers can have fun while gaining relationships that will last a lifetime! This camp is for those athletes who want to start learning about the game of volleyball. This will be a camp that will teach the basic fundamentals and the rules to the game of volleyball. Grade K–2 Grade 3–5 Teen Programs Summer Reading Program free Join us this summer to experience FIZZ, BOOM, READ! Discover all areas of science at the library-animals, music, plants, chemistry experiments, and more! The Reading Program is open to any age (birth-Adult). Come to the library on or after June 3 to pick up a bag with goodies and information on how to keep track of the time that you spend reading. Wouldn‘t it be AWESOME if you could do all three at the same time? Well... you can! The Mighty Kids Triathlon is a one day event for kids ages 7–13. It will take place at the pool and alongside Landsmeer Golf Course. Kids need to provide their own bikes and helmets (mandatory). The facility offers community memberships, personal training, fitness assessments/exercise prescription, nutritional analysis/meal planning, body composition testing and group exercise programs. Located on Iowa Ave SW—this park includes the Scout House, open air shelters, enclosed rental shelter, picnic tables, restrooms, play structures, two softball/baseball fields, sand volleyball courts, horseshoe pits, roller-blade rink, basketball courts, and camping area equipped with electrical and water hook-ups. Orange City Municipal Aquatic Facility Orange City Municipal Aquatic Facility located at 803 2nd St. SE. The pool is heated and offers zero-depth entry, a water slide, lap lanes, diving boards, a splash pad, shade areas and picnic tables, and changing rooms. Pool is open seven days a week during summer (Memorial Day to Labor Day). Landsmeer Golf Club Located on northeast side of town (7th St. NE). An 18-hole course with a practice facility including range, putting green, practice, sand bunker, and chipping green. Puddle Jumper Trail A two mile nature trail covered with crushed rock. A bridle path for horses also runs along side of the main trail. The path is a former railroad right-of-way connecting the communities of Orange City and Alton. Enjoy nature while walking, jogging, biking, or cross-country skiing (in the winter). Plenty of benches line the path. An open-air shelter, picnic tables, restrooms, and drinking fountain at the mid-point can be used as a rest area or picnic location. The mid-point is accessible from a gravel road off of Highway 10 E. Another access point is located on county road K-64 on the south side of Orange City, and the third access point is located on the west side of Alton. Recreation Trail A cement path located around the perimeter of Landsmeer Golf Club. The 2-mile path is great for walking, jogging, biking, or rollerblading. Walking & Jogging An all-weather track is located at Korver Field on the campus of Northwestern College. An indoor track is located in the Rowenhorst Student Center on the Northwestern campus. Robert M Dunlop Wildlife Area Kinderspeelland Located in Vet’s Park—this community built wooden playground was constructed in September 1996. All the labor for the project was donated by local citizens and the project was completed in five days. Kinderspeelland stands as a memorial to Ed Lancaster, long time Parks Supervisor. Windmill Park Downtown Orange City—this park includes an open air rental shelter, beautiful play structures, picnic tables, restrooms, and bandshell. It is the showcase park for the annual Tulip Festival. Jaycee Park Located on Albany Ave. SE—next to Northwestern College’s Korver Field—Jaycee Park has lighted tennis courts and two open air shelters. Pool Park Located at the aquatic facility (2nd St. SE) and close to Landsmeer Golf Club. Swimming Pool Park contains an enclosed rental shelter house, two open air shelters, restrooms, play structure, and plenty of open space for activities. Access to the multi-purpose trail that circles the golf course is also available. Puddlejumper View Park Located on Hartford Place SE, this open space park includes a rock wall, play structures, a new swing set and open air shelter. A rock walking path adjoins from the park to the puddle jumper trail! Bark Park A dog park available for summer usage. This park has a large dog area along with a separate small dog area. Located in Veteran’s Park. A popular fishing spot for local anglers. No swimming allowed.
