Colony High School PTSA Presents Bingo Night Health Awareness: the Flu ■ Understanding the seriousness To help educate older adults and those who care for them about the seriousness of the flu, the importance of prevention and available vaccine options, two-time Emmy and Tony award−winning actress Judith Light—starring in the new Broadway play Thérèse Raquin—has joined the Flu + You program for the second year in a row as the campaign ambassador. The flu can make existing health problems worse and is especially dangerous for people with chronic health conditions, like heart disease and diabetes, which commonly affect older adults. People with these conditions are more likely to develop complications from the flu that can result in hospitalization and even death. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states the single best way to prevent the flu is to get an annual vaccination. However, the survey found that more than half of seniors are unaware that there is a flu shot specifically for their age group. Older adults have flu vaccine options, including the regular flu shot and a higher-dose vaccine, both of which are widely available at a doctor’s office or local pharmacy. Flu vaccination is a Medicare benefit with no copay. Older adults and their caregivers can learn more at ncoa.org/Flu, which features more survey results, free educational materials, and a public service announcement with Judith Light. © NAPSA ONTARIO ELKS BINGO DOORS OPEN 5:00 PM Early Birds 6:30 pm • $15 Buy-In • Snack Bar • Free Coffee • Security • ATM Available • No Checks HALL RENTAL AVAILABLE 1ST TUESDAY OF EVERY MONTH 6:00-9:00 PM DECEMBER 1ST JANUARY 5TH FEBRUARY 2ND PULL TABS! She volunteers her time at two Nursery Schools who love to have a visit from the grand old man. This year she was contacted by our local casino to see if she would play Santa for their Christmas party. She was thrilled, of course, and bought new boots to make sure she looked perfect. I was happy to go along for the ride. The big party was three days before Christmas, and you had to make reservations! We convinced Cliff and Rodney to go and soon the plans were afoot. We dressed in holiday sweaters and Santa hats and were off to enjoy the party. Kate’s job was to accompany the floor worker who made the payouts and give each winner a big howdy and a Christmas candy cane. She was also instructed to keep the party lively and happy. She is good at this and soon everyone was having a great time whether they were winning or not. We had some special games for the yuletide. One was the Christmas tree which was the N row, the second I, the second G and the third B, I, and O. That one was fun and I was actually on before someone else took the prize. Another special game was the star—which was the Indian star and an added corner. That one was very difficult and Kate had her plate full keeping everyone happy. We played along merrily enough, enjoying the spirits and happiness of the season when all at once a great uproar happened on the far side of the room. We were too far away to see what was going on but stood up anyway. The calling ceased temporarily while it was discovered that two big glasses of punch had somehow got dumped over, making a huge mess. In the spirit of the season, the casino replaced the soaked cards with new ones and we were off to play more. The people were not given more punch, however. I could tell our twinkly-toed Santa was wear- ing out as she was not as bouncy as she had been, but she kept right on making the candy cane payouts. We were now at the final blackout and concentration was deep. At last someone shouted “Bingo” and I could see it was a woman nearby whom Kate particularly disliked. I urged her to do her job anyway and could see Kate giving off an aura of disgust. Kate gave the woman her candy cane and then led her to the Christmas tree at the caller’s stand that was loaded with gifts. Courtesy of the Casino, the woman then gave gifts to each woman attendee. They were nice little makeup cases filled with all manner of samples. I treasured mine. The men were given quite good quality wallets. “I’ve been thinking about getting a new one,” said Cliff obviously pleased. We were truly delighted with the way the evening had gone in spite of none of us winning anything. Kate was exhausted but happily collected her pay for her part in the celebration. Then to make the evening perfect, we all went out for a late supper. The average horse will produce 10 gallons of saliva every day. …If you could go back in time and sample a beer from the 1700s, you would find it to be significantly stronger than similar libations that are served today. The higher alcohol content helped the brew survive the long voyage from England to colonial India. …Historians claim that President John Quincy Adams kept a pet alligator in a White House bathroom. He reportedly was amused when unsuspecting guests had to make a trip to the loo. …In the U.S. in 1900, imported perfume was taxed at a higher rate than imported opium. …If you are planning a trip to Hawaii, you might want to go to the Sea Life Park on Oahu. There you can see a rare creature: the wolphin. This cross between a killer whale and a bottlenosed dolphin also reportedly exists in the wild, but I imagine they’re a bit more difficult to find. © King Features The BINGO BUGLE $100 MONTHLY GIVEAWAY! I’ve been seeing a wonderful man for two years, and we’ve been talking about marriage, but I want to make sure we understand all the possible financial consequences before getting hitched. Single Senior Dear Single, That’s a great question. Getting remarried later in life can actually bring about a host of financial and legal issues that are much different and more complicated than they are for younger couples just starting out. Here are some common problem areas you need to think about, and some tips and resources that can help. Estate planning: Getting remarried can have a big effect on your estate plan. Even if your will leaves everything to your kids, in most states spouses are automatically entitled to a share of your estate—usually one-third to one-half. If you don’t want to leave a third or more of your assets to your new partner, get a prenuptial agreement where you both agree not to take anything from the other’s estate. If you do want to leave something to your spouse and ensure your heirs receive their inheritance, a trust may be the best option. Long-term care: You may be surprised to know that in many states, spouses are responsible for each other’s medical and long-term care bills. This is one of the main reasons many older couples choose to live together instead of marrying. Staying unmarried lets you and your partner qualify individually for public benefits, such as Medicaid (which pays nursing home costs), without draining the other one’s resources. But, if you do remarry and can afford it, consider getting a longterm care insurance policy (see longtermcare.gov) to protect your assets. Real estate: If you’re planning on living in his house or vice versa, you also need to think about what will happen to the house when the owner dies. If, for example, you both decide to live in your home, but you want your kids to inherit the place after you die, putting the house in both names is not an option. But, you may also not want your heirs to evict him once you die. One solution is for you to give your surviving husband a life estate—which gives him the right to live in your property during his lifetime. Then once he dies, the house will pass to your heirs. Social Security: Remarriage can also affect the benefits of many divorced or widowed seniors (especially women) who receive Social Security from their former spouses. For instance, getting remarried stops divorced spouse’s benefits. And getting remarried before age 60 (50 if you’re disabled) will cause widows and widowers to lose the right to survivors benefits from their former spouse. Remarrying at 60 or older, however, does not affect survivors benefit. For more information, see ssa.gov/women. Pension benefits: Widows and widowers of public employees, such as police and firemen, often receive a pension—which they can lose if they remarry. In addition, widows and widowers of military personnel killed in duty may lose their benefits if they remarry before age 57, and survivors of federal civil servants that receive a pension will forfeit it if they remarry before 55. If you’re receiving one of these benefits, check your policy to see what the affect will be. Alimony: If you are receiving alimony from an ex-spouse, it will almost certainly end if you remarry and might even be cut off if you live together. College aid: If you have any children in college receiving financial aid, getting married and adding a new spouse’s income to the family could affect what he or she gets. To get help with these issues, consider hiring an estate planner who can draw up a plan to protect both you and your partner’s interests. Between ports, your eight-day high seas adventure will include days of marathon Bingo and other exciting tournaments, a $100,000 total cash payout, and the awarding of free passage for two on Cruise ‘17 to the top winner—not to mention the coveted title of World Bingo Champion! Your host ship for this year’s cruise is Carnival Conquest. Cruising aboard Conquest elevates fun at sea to an art form— the ship demonstrates a true mastery of the craft with an onboard collage of fun spots for you to enjoy, like Guy’s Burger Joint, RedFrog Rum Bar and EA SPORTS Bar. There’s fun everywhere you look, from the ship’s dance club (great for peoplewatching) to the show lounges (great for show-watching). The Taste Bar delivers small bites with big flavor, and the Alchemy Bar serves up a range of one-ofa-kind drinks and a complete experience for your senses. There’s even The Punchliner Comedy Club Presented by George Lopez, which gives stand-up comedians a microphone and a place to share their craft for your enjoyment. And let’s not forget Seuss at Sea, which turns classic Dr. Seuss stories and characters into big fun for all ages. You don’t need to be able to tell a Monet from a Renoir to dine in the ship’s two artful dining rooms; you just need to be hungry. You don’t need a performing arts degree to enjoy lively musical shows onstage at Playlist Productions, although you can say you’re experiencing art from your seat. You won’t even need to read a rulebook to enjoy “Hasbro, The Game Show,” where big fun takes the stage in a live game show anyone can enjoy. With delicious food, bars and entertainment, Carnival Conquest has a scene for everybody. Add to that the magnificent ports of call, marathon Bingo playing (and winning!) in the World Championship Bingo Tournament, added fun in the optional Bingo Bugle Blackjack, Texas Hold ’Em and Sizzling Slots tournaments, and connecting with fellow tournament fans from across the country, is it any wonder that the World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise continues to grow in popularity. The Bingo Bugle’s annual World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise remains The One, The Only, The Original—and The Best Bingo cruise vacation around. Come join us and find out why. Vera Webster of California is a big Bingo fan and was thrilled to discover an ad for the World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise while flipping through the pages of a Bingo Bugle newspaper she picked up at a local casino. “A cruise vacation combined with a Bingo tournament sounded great to me,” Vera says. “I just needed to decide who to invite to go along with me.” Vera decided to ask her 31-year-old granddaughter, Evangelina Moreno, to accompany her. Evangelina lived close by and had gone along on a handful of Bingo outings with her grandmother. “I love spending time with Gramma,” Evangelina says. “She is hilarious, awesome and so young at heart. She is one of my favorite people in the whole world.” Evangelina found her first cruise experience very exciting. “The trip was amazing,” she says. “Carnival was very accommodating, the staff was super nice, and it was easy to get information and find help if you needed it. At the ports we went to the beaches and walked around the towns seeing the sites. On the ship I enjoyed watching the trivia games and karaoke. There was always something fun to do.” But the most fun for Vera and Evangelina, of course, was competing in the World Championship Bingo Tournament. “The first day of the tournament I Bingoed and won $1,200,” Evangelina says. “It was actually kind of funny. I tend to be shy, so when I saw I had Bingo I first turned to Gramma and told her. Her eyes got all big and she said: ‘Don’t tell me, tell them!’ Then I shouted ‘Bingo’ good and loud.” Day two of the Tournament was uneventful for the two women. But on day three, Evangelina struck gold a second time, winning another $1,200 jackpot. That second win put her in a tie for top winner with Joan Grabowsky of Boynton Beach, Florida. “They said we would have a playoff game to decide the winner,” Evangelina said. “The prize was $5,000 cash and a free cruise for two on next year’s cruise.” Before the playoff, Evangelina and Joan agreed to split the $5,000 and only compete for the cruise. “We talked it over and decided that by splitting the cash, whoever didn’t win still got something,” Evangelina recalls. The two then faced off in a final Bingo game for the free cruise for two and the title of World Bingo Champion. “I won!” Evangelina says gleefully. Now that she has returned home to Temecula, California, Evangelina says she still finds it hard to believe that she won. “The whole experience was so new to me,” she says. “The cruise ship, the ports, the Bingo Tournament—it was all very exciting and really fun. And I get to do it all over again, and this time I get to treat Gramma.” The Bingo Bugle’s annual World Championship Bingo Tournament & Gaming Cruise remains The One, The Only, The Original—and The Best Bingo cruise vacation around. Come experience the same excitement and fun that Evangelina and Vera discovered. AI have always liked I-19, for some reason. I have a big plaque on the wall that simply has a big “I-19” on it. Recently, I got an e-mail (to [email protected]) asking me about my love of I-19. It seems that in some far away column I wrote a very long time ago, I mentioned my love of the number. I like to think of it as my good luck charm. When it is the first number out of the box at the beginning of a game, I KNOW it’s going to be a good game. Usually, it isn’t. But I keep on hoping. There are a few other numbers that I always comment on. One is I-23. I call it “The Cutie.” I think the reason is that I-23 looks like 1, 2, 3… and that’s cute. On the down side, I have always hated I-26. Whenever that number is called I always mumble: “That’s the world’s most-hated number.” Some other numbers are the favorites of many callers. At one place where I play, the caller is quite a singer. Whenever he calls B-4, he starts singing, “Before (B-4) Dolls, December , and Me Our hearts grow tender with childhood memories and love of family. We are better throughout the year for having, in spirit, become a child again at Christmas time. —Laura Ingalls Wilder Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way…so goes a favorite song this time of year. Did you know it was composed in 1857 for Thanksgiving, not Christmas? Neither did I, but then the older I get, the more I realize there’s an awful lot that I don’t know. One thing I do know is that December is my favorite month. On the 18th of December in 1620 the British ship Mayflower docked at modern-day Plymouth, Massachusetts and its passengers began new lives in a new world. On the 18th of December in 1946 my mother gave birth at home attended by a country doctor and I began my own brand new life. According to family legend and my mother, I was almost dropped into the chamber pot beside the bed. That makes me one lucky lady because I was caught at the last moment and my first minutes of life were not spent in the dumpster. Times today are so different from when I was young. My brothers and I looked for- The Parade Passes By,” from “Hello, Dolly.” Whenever he calls O-66, he starts singing “Get your kicks on Route 66.” For me, G-47 has always been “The Birthday Ball.” I’ll let you figure that out. O-65 is, of course, the “Retirement Ball.” N-32 is “The Freezer.” Oh, by the way, remember when people used to shout, “FORTY!!!” when N-40 was called. Someday I’ll tell that story again. Speaking of traditions, this might be the perfect time to ask your forgiveness for having forgotten to mention Thanksgiving in last month’s column. Don’t worry, I’m not going to forget to mention Christmas and the coming new year this month. We do have a lot to be thankful for. One of our blessings is the right to gather together and have fun…especially playing Bingo. For many of us it’s not been a good year. There are are some empty chairs in the Bingo hall. We must remember those great friends who once graced our lives. Oh, and one other thing. When you have company in from out of town during the holidays, invite them to Bingo. We need to do all we can to keep this game alive. Additionally, don’t send me a gift this year. Give your gifts to the hard-working men and woman who make your local Bingo possible. Remember, we may not play every session, but THEY are there. Bingo doesn’t work without them. Before you leave the hall today, go up and thank the callers and the runners. Tell them how much you appreciate their being there. Give them a big smile. See you next year. ward to getting candy from Santa after the local Christmas parade. Then, we’d go home to apples, oranges, nuts, and more candy that my parents only bought at Christmas time. We opened our gifts on Christmas Eve, but there was always a special present or two from Santa the next morning. I received a doll as a gift for the last time when I was in the 7th grade. I still have it as I do most of my other dolls including one that is almost bald. I cut its hair and expected it to grow back. I’m still waiting and my poor bald little doll is a reminder that little girls with scissors are not to be trusted. With Hanukkah and Kwanzaa also in December, we have reasons to celebrate the whole month long. There are Bingo specials galore and lots of good cheer all around, both mental and liquid. Eggnog and chocolate covered cherry drinks are our family favorites. At Bingo I love seeing all the Christmas sweaters although some might think they’re tacky. I try to buy a new one every year, so just call me tacky if you’re so inclined. On Christmas morning take a look around for spiders and spider webs. If you find any, it is said they will bring you the gift of good luck. It’s lucky for the spiders, too, because they’re inside where it’s warm instead of freezing their teeny tiny butts off outside in the weather. However, three days later, be wary because December 28th is believed by some to be the unluckiest day of the year. This can be traced back to King Herod; on that date he attempted to kill the infant Jesus by ordering the massacre of the babes in Bethlehem. In the 1600s it was customary to re-enact this atrocity by whipping all juvenile family members. Ouch! Until next month may Lady Luck blow you kisses as you dance out the door with dollars. Win big. Instead of e-mailing me this month, e-mail Tara Snowden who’s our Bingo Bugle publisher ([email protected]) and thank her for our favorite Bingo magazine. After all, December is National Bingo Month. Page 12; Bingo Bugle (San Bernardino/Riverside County) December 2015 Oscar buzz Q: I saw a preview for a movie with Leonardo DiCaprio where he has a beard, is all dirty, and is seeking revenge on Tom Hardy. Can you tell me about it? —Douglas C., Annapolis, Maryland A: You are referring to The Revenant, which will open Christmas Day in select cities (to qualify for Oscar consideration), with a wider opening Jan. 8, 2016. Leo plays explorer Hugh Glass, who is left for dead by Tom’s John Fitzgerald after Hugh is mauled by a bear. Set in 1823, the film is based on Michael Punke’s novel The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge, and, of course, there is already Oscar buzz surrounding the film. Q: Did they cancel Person of Interest? I’m getting nervous because I haven’t been able to find it on CBS’s fall schedule. —Paul T., via email A: CBS did renew the crime drama for a fifth season—a 13-episode order of the series will premiere midseason. Although CBS hasn’t yet made its final decision, show runners are approaching this season as if it could be the final one, as executive producer Jonathan Nolan revealed during this summer’s Comic-Con. Q: Can you tell me what Aaron Eckhart has been up to lately? —Rita C., via email A: The handsome and versatile actor is in Clint Eastwood’s latest film, Sully, which chronicles the January 2009 reallife events where Capt. Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger safely landed his aircraft on the Hudson River after a flock of geese knocked out both engines. Aaron plays first officer and co-pilot Jeff Skiles opposite Tom Hanks’ Sully. The film is based on Sullenberger’s 2009 autobiography Highest Duty: My Search for What Really Matters. But what most don’t understand, is that the pay tables on Jacks or Better machines are not always the same. For example, if you examine the pay schedules for Jacks or Better, you will most likely find the following six pay schedules in casinos. (Note: I’ve only listed the pay schedule per coin played for reference, even though you should always play the maximum five coins when you play video poker.) The first column shows the per coin payout for a 9/6 Jacks or Better game. The 9/6 designation represents the payout for the full house and flush. The second column lists the pay schedule for an 8/6 game, the third, a 9/5 game, and so forth. Notice that I’ve included the Expected Return (ER) percentages at the bottom of each column for each pay schedule. Of course, you won’t find this percentage on a video poker machine. This number is calculated based on the Pay Schedule and the assumption that you will play every hand perfectly. The higher the ER percentJacks or Better Pay Schedule: 9/6 Royal Flush 800 Straight Flush 50 4-of-a-Kind 25 Full House 99 Flush 6 Straight 3-of-a-Kind 3 Two Pair 2 Jacks-or-Better Expected Return 8/6 800 50 25 8 6 4 3 2 1 99.54% age, the more the machine will return to players. Saying it another way, smart video poker players will only play Jacks or Better games that have the highest ER. (The casinos will not tell you the ER of their video poker games…this is something you, the player, need to know if you are serious about winning.) The important figures to focus on when you look at the pay schedule of a Jacks or Better game is the per coin payout for the Full House and Flush (highlighted in the above table). Casinos who want to lower the ER for this game (to generate more revenue), will usually decrease the payout for the full house and flush. Therefore, a 9/6 Jacks or Better game is the best Jacks or Better game that you can play (because it returns 99.54% of all the coins played back to players in the long run). Many casinos opt for the 8/5 Jacks or Better pay schedule, which has an ER of only 97.30%. One of the worst Jacks or Better games (that you should avoid) is a 6/5 game (here the ER is only 95.00%, about 4.5% lower than a 9/6 Jacks or Better game). (Note: Besides looking at the per coin payout for the flush and full house when you check pay schedules, glance at the payouts for the other hands to be sure they are the same as listed in the above table.) However, it is possible to get a great workout outdoors this winter, as long as you exercise caution and dress properly. Exercising in cold weather can put extra stress on the body. It is important to consult your physician if you have a medical condition that puts you at risk before starting a new outdoor regimen. The two conditions you have to worry about are frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite is the freezing of body tissue. It occurs most often on fingers, toes, ears and face. Symptoms of frostbite include pain, numbness, tingling and burning of the affected site. Hypothermia occurs when the core body temperature drops to below 95 degrees F. Symptoms include chills, fatigue, drowsiness, slurred speech, intense shivering and loss of coordination. The right clothes are your first line of defense. Dress in layers. The first layer should be a thin synthetic fabric such as polypropylene, which helps draw sweat away from the body. The next layer should be fleece or wool to help insulate the body. The top layer should be waterproof to help keep heat from escaping and keep moisture and wind out. It’s also important to protect areas of the body prone to frostbite. A thin pair of gloves under a heavier pair will protect hands. Thermal socks will help protect the feet. It may be necessary to purchase shoes a half size larger to allow for the thickness of the socks. Don’t forget a hat or headband to protect your ears. Be sure to drink plenty of fluids. Dehydration is not just a risk in the summer. When sweating and increased breathing occur, in any type of weather, dehydration is a possibility. It is particularly important to warm up properly for cold weather workouts. The body tends to stiffen more easily in cold weather. Do a short warm-up activity to help prevent injury. Remember that shoveling snow can be a good workout, but also can take a toll on people who are not used to heavy lifting. Take the same precautions you would for any other hard outdoor workout, because that is exactly what it is! After your winter workout, you can warm up with a hearty bowl of Kale and Potato Chowder. With potatoes replacing the cream traditionally used in chowder recipes, this is a fast, economical and healthy soup that will keep the chill away until spring. Kale and Potato Chowder 4 removed 1 1/2 1 1 1/2 1 1/2 1 4 1 4 3 2 1 1 cups chopped fresh kale, stems tablespoons olive oil medium onion, diced teaspoons salt teaspoons ground black pepper tablespoon poultry seasoning or Italian seasoning cloves garlic, diced (14-ounce) can diced tomatoes -- no salt added, with liquid large baking potatoes, diced with skin cups water cups low-sodium chicken broth large carrot, sliced into thin rounds (15-ounce) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed 1. In a large pot, heat the oil. Add onions, salt, pepper and poultry or Italian seasoning; cook until onions are tender, about 3 to 5 minutes. Add garlic and the tomatoes, and cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the potatoes, water and broth to the soup pot. Bring the ingredients to a boil and reduce to a simmer. Cook until potatoes are almost done, about 10 minutes. 2. Remove 2 cups of the potatoes along with some of the liquid. Place the potatoes and liquid into a blender. Carefully loosen the top of the blender to allow air to circulate, and cover the top with a dish towel to prevent the hot liquid from exploding out. Start blending on the lowest setting, and gradually increase to medium and then high. Blend until the potatoes are smooth. 3. Add the potato mixture, kale, carrots and kidney beans to soup pot; stir to combine. Continue cooking for 10 to 15 minutes until kale and carrots are tender. Taste and add more seasoning as needed. Serve in soup bowl along with side salad of fruit or leafy greens, and whole-grain crackers or bread. Makes 6 (1-1/4 cup) servings. Every Sunday since 2008, The Coast radio station has been calling the numbers over the airwaves and has given away close to $500,000 in prize money. The games have become an important fundraiser for the non-profit radio station that has a goal of fostering and promoting Cape Breton culture, tourism, arts and music. In the process it has also fostered family unity, with younger family members picking up Bingo cards, stopping by to visit with the folks, then settling in to play Bingo together. Seniors say the weekly games have become a social event for them as well. Significant prizes have been given away—reaching as high as $20,000. Student Bingo Event University of Wyoming students were recently invited to participate in a free Bingo night in the student activity center. The event offered a variety of prizes including a bicycle, a 32-inch TV, Beats by Dre headphones, an iPad mini, an Xbox One and a PlayStation 4. The Bingo event experienced a big student turnout and was sponsored by Friday Night Fever, which provides students with free, quality entertainment during prime social times. The Bingo night was also part of UW’s Cowboy Check-In program, a recently launched initiative to encourage atten- dance and participation in campus events. Bingo App Anyone who still thinks that Bingo is an “old fashioned” game should know that Microsoft, which in 2013 released Microsoft Bingo for PC and later made it available on phones as a universal app, has just updated it to work with the brand new Windows 10 design language. If reviews on the App Store are anything to go by, people young and old are still crazy about Bingo—awarding the app an average rating of four stars. Microsoft’s version allows gamers to “travel the world” earning souvenirs as they fill in their cards. Along the way, they can pick up luggage prizes and special rewards for matching Power Card picks. The game is free to play with in-app purchases and can be downloaded from the App Store. Medical Bingo Wabash Valley senior citizens took advantage of valuable health education and screenings during the Tribune-Star newspaper’s 16th annual Senior Expo at the Hulman Center in Terre Haute, Indiana. Area vendors provided participants with information on hearing aids, medical supplies, assisted living facilities and hospice care. Attendees took in games of Bingo after visiting the various booths. While Bingo was a highlight of the day, medical screenings for total cholesterol and glucose proved to be one of the most popular attractions—to the point that screeners had to return to the area hospitals where they work to get more testing supplies. My luck was going so well that I half expected the next thing to happen was a rich old boyfriend showing up with a bouquet of roses and asking me to marry him! When Bingo ended and I was heading home, I started feeling guilty about the extra packs. Did I steal them? And if I did, does that mean I also stole the $75 prize? Or was it the cashier’s mistake and once I paid her and walked away, all four packs were mine. I would really appreciate your opinion on this and what you think I should do about it. —Lucky Lady, California, via email A Dilemma ■ What would you do? Automatic entries with purchases using a Discover Prepaid Card. Dear Aunt Bingo, I’ve landed in a bit of an awkward situation and am not sure what is the best thing to do to make things right. When I last went to Bingo it was to one of three places I like to go to—a middle school not too far away from my apartment building. They run a nice Bingo in a clean, activity center (lighting is important for me because my eyesight is not the best) with Bingo that goes at a good pace and brings in a fairly good crowd but not so many people that you feel you will never win because there are too many people playing against you. When I play Bingo I like to play two 9on packs which give me enough cards so that I can keep up with the caller and not feel rushed or get bored because there is too much lag time between calls. bought two packs the night I went the school Bingo. But when I got to my seat and laid out my paper I discovered that the packs, which had felt a little thicker/heavier than normal when the cashier gave them to me, were actually four packs that had stuck together and made two double packs. I sat there with the four packs undecided about what to do. I was late getting to Bingo and the caller was about to start so I didn’t want to start some big discussion with a Bingo worker and mess up my Bingo. When the first game started I pushed the two extra packs to the side to return to the cashier later and began to play the two I paid for. But I couldn’t help glancing over at the other two packs and immediately noticing when the numbers that were called were on those cards. It didn’t take long for me to feel that a LOT more called numbers were on the sheets I wasn’t playing. I finally couldn’t stand it anymore and pulled the other two packs over and started daubing all the numbers that had been called. My stress turned into total relief when I finally marked all the back numbers and all four packs were caught up! I then continued to play the four packs and was surprised that I easily kept up with the caller although I had never played this Dear Lucky Lady, You have presented a very interesting dilemma… 1. Was the extra Bingo paper yours to keep and play because you paid the buy-in and it was then given to you through no deception on your part? Or… 2. Did a “theft” occur after you realized you had been given extra paper and recognized it as an error before the games began, intended to return it, then chose instead to play it once the games started? Or… 3. Was that theoretical “theft” cancelled out because the only reason you played the paper was because it was there on the table next to you, you couldn’t help noticing all the called numbers that were on the sheets, and you were eventually tempted beyond resistance to play the extra sheets that you wouldn’t have played had they not been given to you in the first place. I suspect that, had you not won any money, you wouldn’t have given playing the four packs a second thought. But because you did win—at a charity Bingo held to help support activities at a school—you’re feeling a bit shady. It seems to me your options are these: Keep the cash and forget about how you got it; Donate all the cash back to the school and clear your conscience; Return a portion of the winnings to the school equal to the cost of buying those two extra packs; Designate that the $75 plus the cost of two Bingo packs be used only for future Bingo at the middle school and make sure it all gets spent there until your losses equal that amount. Good luck! —Aunt Bingo This is one of those unique letters to which I welcome reader feedback. What would you advise Lucky Lady to do? Please send your opinions to one of the addresses below and I’ll share them in a future column. Thanks! —Aunt Bingo Share your views! Write to Aunt Bingo c/o the Bingo Bugle, P.O. PREDICTORS LUCKY CARD FOR DECEMBER 2015 remember the importance of the power it has to attract good things and good people into your life. Just remember that what you acquire is best shared as a gift or service to others. Nothing makes you happier. Lucky Days: 12-22 Lucky Numbers: 28-59 by Frederick Woodruff astroinquiry.com Explore more at Horoscopes for December 2015 ARIES: Mar. 21-Apr. 20: Oh wow, with your ruler colliding with Uranus, the planet of surprise, this is a holiday that will go down in the history books. A little bit of restraint is called for, that way you can channel your explosive passion to assist those in your circle that don’t have as much courage. Or faith. Lead the way – but wisely. Lucky Days: 6-14 Lucky Numbers: 13-57 TAURUS: Apr. 21-May 21: Your sensual nature is operating at high gear this month. So all the food and festivities are going to seem doubly enticing. With Venus, your ruler, in Virgo you’ll want to turn your passions into a sort of epicurean discipline. This kind of restraint will allow you to enjoy them even more. Lucky Days: 17-25 Lucky Numbers: 23-49 GEMINI: May 22-June 21: Your mind has the ability to be in five different places simultaneously. That’s great if you are working as a reporter or detective, but his month is about focus when the New Moon becomes entangled with Saturn, the planet of gravity and determination. Pick one, and only one plan this month, and stick to it. Lucky Days: 3-24 Lucky Numbers: 19-46 CANCER: June 22-July 22: You’ve been sitting on a supernova of a project for about two years now, and it’s time to network with others, as a release—or explode from the built up tension. Choose the more constructive outlet. You wouldn’t want the world to miss out on your big dream brought to live. Lucky Days: 11-21 Lucky Numbers: 39-60 LEO: July 23-Aug. 23: Your commanding style is ready to broadcast its message to a larger audience. But it’s critical that you break from the past and offer a unique and exciting message. Anything less will come off as too pushy (or boring) and not a good fit with your personable nature. Lucky Days: 2-8 Lucky Numbers: 20-68 VIRGO: Aug. 24-Sept. 23: Optimism is a funny thing. You can’t fake it, but you can LIBRA: Sept. 24-Oct. 23: Your tolerance and patience this holiday season is at a tipping point. The challenge might be that you’re too nice and need to define exactly what it is you want and what you won’t tolerate from others. Communicate and ask for more room or space if you need it. Lucky Days: 4-15 Lucky Numbers: 14-59 SCORPIO: Oct. 24-Nov. 22: We don’t usually associate the holidays with frugality but this is the month to put all of your financial affairs in tip-top order. With Saturn in your money house the message is: You get exactly what you give. So any extra effort you apply to a goal is certain to reap rewards, the secret is persistence and faith. Lucky Days: 13-16 Lucky Numbers 17-65 SAGITTARIUS: Nov. 23-Dec. 21: The New Moon on the 11th in your house of charisma is like a lit match in a firework factory. But the slower moving planets offer balance. However the 9-story hotel portion of the resort has already been built, and work is set to begin on the casino and parking garage, keeping it on schedule for a summer 2016 opening. It’s also been disclosed that the owner of the Lucky Dragon is also the developer of the adjacent Allure condo and that the space where the casino is being built was originally earmarked for a second Allure tower. Casino Royale Additions The center-Strip Casino Royale has announced that it’s adding a race and sports book and sports bar. Both will be located in the center of the casino (we assume where the current bar sits), with the book operated by William Hill. Work will be completed this winter. Fremont Performance Experience Beginning Nov. 1, the five-block pedestrianized Fremont Street Experience will have designated six-foot “performance circles” within which buskers, costumed characters, and others will be required to confine themselves. The ordinance also requires performers to register with the city and to remain at least 100 feet back from official concerts. Access to the roughly three-dozen performance rings will be assigned daily via a lottery system and individual performance stints will be limited to two hours. Tour Casa de Shenandoah Wayne Newton’s Casa de Shenandoah is now open to the public. Visitors to the 52-acre estate inside the ornate gates at the corner of Sunset and Pecos will also tour Newton’s extensive menagerie of Arabian horses, peacocks, wallabies, and a Capuchin monkey; his collection of memorabilia; and his private jet and automobile collection. There are also several gift stores. Tours start at $35. I remember being most happy while in the color Blue, and trying to avoid the color Red. Does this mean anything or did I have too much wine that night? Khaki J., Ft. Lauderdale, Florida A spooky dream ■ Rethink and reexamine your life Dear Dream Lady, I had a spooky dream that left me shaking when I woke up. I dreamed I was in a séance with a group of acquaintances. We were trying to call up friends who had died. Suddenly, a large spotlight appeared and we saw loved ones who had passed on. We stood up and hugged each of them. They told us they were doing well and not to worry about them. Even though I think the dream was supposed to comfort me, I was discombobulated for the day. What does this mean? Danielle H., Las Vegas, Nevada Dear Danielle, In a dream, people you do not know are aspects of yourself. It looks like you are going through a period of self-examination since a searchlight is involved. The purpose is not to upset you, but to nudge you in a gentle way to rethink your life. Take this dream to heart and see what you need to improve about yourself. —Dream Lady Dear Khaki, It is clear that your “dancing” dream reflects good times. The color Blue indicates you are free from worry. The color Red says you have to work at controlling your temper and you are working hard to stay on the “bright” side of life. Keep up the good work! —Dream Lady Dear Dream Lady, Do you have advice for someone who constantly dreams of different types of cars that I ride around in? I am never the driver, always the passenger and the car is different weekly. Ray S., Seattle, Washington Dear Ray, Your dream tells me you like others to “drive” you because you do not trust your decisions. It also tells me you are not satisfied with your life and you seek a different “vehicle” of happiness to reach your destination. Since these are regular dreams, I suggest counseling so you can be responsible for your life as it is, not as you wish it could be. —Dream Lady Send your dreams to Dream Lady, P.O. Box 414, Entiat WA 98822. Send an SASE to receive interpretation before publication.
