Block 13, Clinical Hospital UPCOMING PROJECTS PROJECT PROPOSAL The Great British Pancake Race A proposal to develop an annual charity event to coincide with Ukrainian Mazlinitsa A great British tradition ● Pancake Day falls on Shrove Tuesday, the day before the start of Lent when it is traditional to use up all your flour, eggs and sugar ● In 2012 Pancake day will fall on the 21st of February ● The first record of a pancake day race dates back to 1445 in the village of Olnay in Buckinghamshire, in the UK ● Pancake races have been run almost annually since that date ● The contestants, traditionally women, carry a frying pan and race to the finishing line while tossing the pancakes as they go. ● The winner is the first to cross the line having tossed the pancake a certain number of times. ● Traditionally, when men want to participate, they must dress up as a housewife (usually an apron and a bandanna) however fancy dress is also acceptable. Proposal ● Pancake day races take place in the United Kingdom, Germany, Ireland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Philippines and in some states in the USA ● To start the tradition in Ukraine but as an annual Charity event to raise money and to promote charitable values on the day before Lent ● Involve the following parties ● ● ● ● ● ● The British Embassy The Kyiv Lions Club British based companies as sponsors A British Hotel as a base point Gala Radio to promote the event The media to cover the event and as competitors The event ● 12.00 noon on Tuesday the 21st of February ● Traditionally Pan Cake races are for individuals the event is more likely to raise funds if it is done as a team event ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Teams of three running in relay All either in fancy dress or dressed as women A children’s race for teams from the local and international schools A post event Pancake party at a hotel where prizes will be awarded 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes – Engraved frying pans Special prizes for the school teams All participants receive a certificate Special prize for the most outrageous costume Possible routes British Embassy Intercontinental Hotel Option 1 Start and finish Start and finish Hyatt Hotel Option 2 How will it raise money and awareness? ● Each team will pay an entry fee ● Sponsors cover the cost of the organisation of the event, the branded start and finish line and make a donation to KLC ● At the after party we hold an auction of simple items – Target $2,000 ● The real value will be in the media value as such an event is very likely to attract television and press interest ● ● ● ● Media maximisation for the Embassy as it is a British custom Media maximisation for KLC as it is a Charity event Media event for the sponsors A fun event that people will talk about The competitors ● The rules ● To be finalised but each competitor will have to toss their pancake at fixed points on the route ● The competitors ● Team uniforms / T shirts ● Frying pan ● Pancakes provided by the participating hotel ● The teams ● All girls or all boys but dressed as girls or mixed teams but all dressed as girls ● Fancy dress teams ● School teams (age range to be determined) Next steps ● Discuss with the President of Kyiv Lions Club to get concept buy in ● Discuss with the Embassy to get concept buy in and agree participation ● Prepare an event budget ● Discuss with potential sponsors ● Identify potential teams and media sponsors ● Meet with the city to get formal permission PROJECT PROPOSAL FEASIBILITY PHASE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR WORK GROUP KLC 2012 Christmas Party for Orphans A discussion proposal The Idea • To create a Christmas Party for all the children that live in children’s homes and orphanages in the City of Kiev • A party that brings together the people of the city, the pop music industry and the City administration in an event designed to give children a huge hug at Christmas • A party that could become an annual event and at the same time raise money for Children’s homes and orphanages The Concept • A Christmas party at Palace of Sport • Held in the weeks just before New Year or Old Christmas • Held on Saturday afternoon so that it does not interfere with musicians evening schedules and is ideal for families • A full programme of top musicians invited by Gala Radio to appear and sing 2 or 3 songs • Celebrities invited to participate as Father frost, Snegurochka and others • Recorded for national television broadcast as part of the new year celebrations Palace of Sport layout idea Public seating Public seating Technical zone Young children seated zone VIP and sponsors zone Older children’s standing zone Stage & runway Young children seated zone Technical zone Public seating Public presentation • Tickets sold to the public through the normal ticket sales outlets • Event widely publicised by Gala Radio and associated radio stations, the print and electronic media and via television • Presented as a Party for the Children of the whole city Key message ‘buy tickets for your family and give a present to a child that has no family’ The organisers • KLC and Gala Radio as coordinators and organisers • A full time team working for 4 to 6 months before the event, funded by sponsors • The Administration of the City of Kyiv to ensure that issues surrounding the organisation and the children’s homes are minimised • Supportive media and sponsors How does it make money • City Administration provide palace of Sport for free, provide the transport for the children and access to National Television • Gala Radio persuade the artists appear for free and promote the event • The sponsors cover the capital costs and provide the Christmas gifts for the children • KLC and Gala Radio provide the organisational and logistical support • 100% of ticket sales and the balance of sponsorship support comes to KLC What do we do with the funds • Use them to buy sports & play ground equipment for Children’s homes • We will not raise enough money to fit out every children’s home therefore they will have to compete to win the equipment • Link the project to sports equipment producers to expand the scope and reach of the project Anticipated results • Funding for a very worthy cause • An event that may bring the city together to rethink their approach to orphanages and children’s homes particularly at christmas • KLC working with the City to support the under privileged • Massive publicity for our work Why start now? • Organising an event of this scale needs to be planned well in advance to: • Maximise sponsorship and corporate support • Ensure that the event is built into sponsors 2012 marketing and CSR plans • Ensure the participation of top musicians and celebrities • Building public awareness that this is a public event for a good cause at Christmas • Maybe develop this as an annual charity event Initial decisions • Does the concept fit within the ideals of KLC? • Do we have the resources to carry out such a large project? • Are we prepared to undertake such a long term project? • Who is ready to volunteer for a working group?
