A Century of
Jewish Olympians
with Professor Howard Lupovitch
Wednesday nights
beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Hundreds of Jewish athletes have competed in the modern Olympics games
during the last 120 years. How has their participation and success impacted
the self-image of Jews and the image of Jews to non-Jewish observers?
We’ll explore this question from the vantage point of the athletes who
competed and from contemporary observers.

Year-round teen programming
Multiple opportunities exist in our community for teens to further their Jewish education and strengthen their Jewish
identities. Beth Ahm is a partner and supporter of many of these opportunities including:
MCUSY (Motor City USY) is a youth group for kids in grades 6-12. Social events and weekend experiences allow
the kids to build relationships and work together while they develop a love of Judaism and Israel. For more
information about the group or the fall kick-off event on August 21, contact Jacki Honig at [email protected]
or 248-357-5544.
ATID (Alliance for Teens in Detroit) engages post-Bar Mitzvah kids as empowered learners and leaders. Regular
educational and tikkun olam programs focus on community building, strengthening Jewish identity, and
participating in Jewish life. For more information, visit www.atidhs.org
Teen Volunteer Corps puts Jewish values into everyday life through hands-on involvement in projects that improve

Happy Summer! We are the new Co-Presidents of Beth Ahm Sisterhood. We have an exciting year planned with great events. We are
always looking for new people to get involved, so please contact us if you would like to volunteer in any way. As always, our meetings
are open to all members and prospective members. The next meeting will be on Sunday July 31 at 10:30 a.m.
Please watch your mail for the annual Sisterhood membership dues letter. We hope you will consider renewing your commitment or
joining if you are new to the shul or Sisterhood. We are excited to announce that our annual membership event will be on October 9 at
ArtPrize in Grand Rapids. Only paid up Sisterhood members are eligible to buy tickets for the round trip bus ride.
Our annual rummage sale is August 7-9. Please consider donating items and volunteering to help before, during or after the sale. This is
Sisterhood’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The monies raised allow Sisterhood to help beautify our shul, such as the recent remodeling
of the women’s restroom near the teen lounge and adding new lighting in the Mermelstein kitchen.
Other upcoming events include:
Escape Room event with the Men’s Club - November 12, 2016
Painting with a Twist - December 13, 2016
Comedy Club with the Men’s Club - January 21, 2017
Line Dancing with the Men’s Club - February 11, 2017
Cooking event with Robin and Rabbi Rubenstein - date to be determined
We also want to thank our outgoing board members for their dedication and service to Sisterhood! Thank you to our immediate Past
Presidents, Ilene Kahan and Terri Stearn. Your tireless efforts for Sisterhood and Beth Ahm are so appreciated. We look forward to your
continued guidance and support.
We also want to thank Rabbi Rubenstein, David Goodman, and the office and maintenance staff for all of their support and assistance
with Sisterhood.
We look forward to a wonderful and eventful year! Please join us in continuing to enrich our beloved Beth Ahm.
Sincerely,

Attention Teens : Your Help is Needed!
We would love teens to assist with services (as part of a group of people who will accompany Ronn
Nadis during the Torah service) and/or read Torah during Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. We are
happy to help you prepare and because Rosh Hashana begins the evening of October 2, there is
more time than usual between the end of summer break and the holidays. A great opportunity to be
involved. If you are interested, please contact Rabbi Rubenstein at [email protected]
High Holiday Honors
Over the course of several years, our Ritual Committee reached out to our congregation on a
rotating basis to offer them honors during High Holy Day services. Still, if you haven’t received an
honor recently or would simply like an opportunity to participate this year, please contact Rabbi
Rubenstein directly at 248-851-6880 or [email protected]. We will do our best to find an
opportunity for you to participate during the holidays this year.

Minyan Matters
Message from the President
Dear Friends,
Thirteen times a week, (Shabbat morning being the only exception), a dedicated group of Beth Ahm members, and some who are not
members, gather in Tauber Chapel for morning and evening services. Each service includes Kaddish for mourners while Monday and
Thursday morning services also include Torah readings. In order to recite Kaddish, read Torah, as well as say several other parts of the
service, we need a minyan of at least ten adults.
While our minyan program remains strong, we are always looking for the additional involvement of others. Consider joining us one day a
week or one day a month. Or, consider joining us when you have yahrzeit for a loved one. In addition to knowing that you will have helped
insure that a mourner has the opportunity to say Kaddish, you will feel a sense of community, know that you are helping to continue an
important tradition and have the opportunity to meet new people. As
Drop In and Learn on DVD:
an added bonus, there is the camaraderie associated with a
“Visions of the Jewish State”
minyan breakfast if you are able to be a morning participant.
If you are not able to actively participate yourself in our minyan, there
is a way that you can help our minyan remain strong. Many of us know
people in the community (e.g. friends, extended family, neighbors, work
colleagues) who may have suffered a loss or might be searching for a
“spiritual comfort zone” for whatever reason. Please tell them about our
minyan and invite them to come.
To volunteer or for more information, please call or email me.

Message from the President
I am excited to write to you as President of our synagogue. Beth Ahm has a rich history dating from 1892. I am
grateful for the opportunity to lead our congregation and do all that I can to continue its role of being a dynamic
center of Jewish life.
The events at Beth Ahm over the last few months highlight our role in the community of being a place to
celebrate Judaism. Here are just a few examples,
• We hosted The Jewish Theological Seminary and over 300 guests as they honored leaders within the Conservative congregations
• The community walked through our doors for the Star Trax event planning expo
• Our children inspired us by leading the congregation in prayer during youth Shabbat
• Yad Ezra recognized the work of their volunteers at their annual appreciation dinner
• As a synagogue community, we celebrated the Bat Mitzvah of a young person
• We celebrated the wedding of another young person who continues to grow within the synagogue
• The Institute of Retired Professionals marked the 30th anniversary of their organization
• We welcomed the Accountants Guild for a day of continuing education
We also look forward to events this summer that will enrich us. Professor Howard Lupovitch will present a 4-part educational series titled
A Century of Jewish Olympians. As the eyes of the world are focused on the games in Brazil, Professor Lupovitch will highlight the
Jewish presence over the years.
I am also excited for Dara Horn, renowned author and teacher, to visit and serve as our scholar-in-residence. She will teach following
Shabbat dinner on September 23, after lunch on September 24, and will be our featured guest at the communal Selichot service which
Beth Ahm will be hosting. I hope you join us for all or part of this wonderful weekend.
Lastly, I want to thank you for your involvement and commitment to the congregation. Without your participation, time, and tzedakkah,
Beth Ahm would not be the synagogue it is today. We all have worked hard over the last few years and our future is bright. I look forward to
your continued involvement and to serving as your President. Together, we’ll continue the rich tradition of Beth Ahm.

The Accountants Guild enjoyed a comfortable environment

Message from the Rabbi
Beyond Borders
I was looking forward to hearing Daniel Gordis at the AIPAC Michigan Spring Event. While I continue to think
of him in part as someone that served on the admissions committee that interviewed me when I applied for
rabbinical school, he is certainly more well-known for his books and articles about Israel. His talk at AIPAC
was a bit surprising in that he chose to avoid the specific geo-political issues that are usually the focus for
AIPAC.
Instead, his main claim was that those of us who love Israel need to tell the story of Israel from the perspective
of the revolutionary nature of Zionism and The State of Israel. He lamented the fact that too often when talking
about Israel, people bring forth a list of dates associated with Israel’s wars---1948, 1967, 1973. Of course,
these are important moments in Israeli history, but as he pointed out, you wouldn’t tell the story of the United
States by focusing only on its wars---War of Independence, Civil War, WW I, WW II, Korea, Vietnam… Instead,
someone telling the story of what is essential about the U.S. might talk about its values.
The same should be true when we speak about Israel. The return of the Jewish people to its ancestral homeland, the rebirth of the Hebrew
language, the creation of a refuge for a people who has suffered from the absence of such a refuge---all of these stand at the heart of
modern Israel. Gordis also reminded us of the fact that Theodor Herzl’s vision of Israel included the revolutionary idea that this nation would
be concerned with the well-being of those beyond its borders. This from a man living in Europe, frightened (and rightly so) for the existence
of the Jewish people, dreaming of a country that will reach beyond self-preservation. It was Golda Meir who, upon her election as Prime
Minister of Israel, pulled Herzl’s Altneuland off her shelf, pointed to this vision of Herzl’s and directed her advisors to begin that process; a
process which resulted in Israelis traveling to Africa to teach agricultural techniques and to Haiti, Turkey, and China (among other places) to
set up mobile medical units in response to natural disasters.
Gordis’ message resonated with me. Beyond a focus on the revolutionary aspects of Israel, my love and attachment to Israel grows as I
continue to learn about Israel through literature and modern media. So, with summer upon us and the possibility that some of you may
have a bit more free time, I offer a few suggestions for enhancing your knowledge of Israel.
My first suggestion is a podcast. While I heard about Israel Story when it first appeared, I let it slip out of sight until just a month or so ago.
Israel Story is built on the model of This American Life, the hugely successful public radio show. It began as a Hebrew podcast but soon
moved to producing an English version as well. It provides a variety of stories about Israel today from the mundane to the monumental;
from the changing role of Yitzhak Rabin in Israeli memory to stories about basketball, love, and the only Israeli buffalo cheese maker in the
world.
My second suggestion is to read Israeli literature. You may have noticed that I have started an occasional series called Book Notes which
will let you know about things I’ve been reading. Over time I hope to include a good bit of Israeli literature but don’t wait. Think about all
of the books and stories you read back in school which form the foundation of your American-ness (think Faulkner, Steinbeck, Melville,
Fitzgerald, Hemingway…). Not everyone loved all of those books, but they are part of you. Israelis have a literary canon too but it is made
up of Bialik, Agnon, Rachel, Tchernikovsky, Amos Oz, A.B. Yehoshua… A beautiful way to connect with Israel is to get to know Israeli
literature. Most of us are a bit behind since we didn’t read these authors as kids. But we are in luck! So much of this literature is in
translation and available in paperback and in our library.
Beyond the issue of Israel’s borders, Israel is a place of change, variety, and a thriving culture. For those who love Israel but live far from its
shores, there are many ways to continue to grow in our knowledge and love.

Would you like to receive a phone call to let you know
when there is a death in the Beth Ahm family?
While we send an email to all congregants after a passing,
we know that some members of Beth Ahm either do not have a computer or
do not check their email regularly.
For this reason, we maintain a phone call list for death notifications.
To join the call list or for more info, contact Ritual Assistant Nancy Kaplan

May their memories endure for a blessing
Honor the memory of your loved ones by purchasing a memorial plaque in the Kahan Memorial Room. The purchase of a plaque
will ensure that your loved one’s name will be read during the week of their yahrzeit. It is a lasting tribute of your love that links
the generations of your family. Plaques are currently $500 each. We hope that you will take advantage of this opportunity to assure your
loved ones will be forever remembered at Congregation Beth Ahm. Contact David Goodman at 248-851-6880.
