Weekly Message
Beloved parishioners,
Welcome to the celebrations of HOLY WEEK! This is the highpoint of the Church’s liturgical
year when we uniquely remember and celebrate the mystery of our salvation – the suffering,
crucifixion, death and resurrection of Christ.
Today is Palm Sunday or Passion Sunday. Our liturgy begins with a procession with palms
into the church, reminding us of the triumphant procession of Jesus into Jerusalem. Later,
we read the passion story. The Jesus that was hailed as King will now be scorned and rejected
by the people. Everything that Jesus did was for our salvation. In all, he fulfilled the prophecy of old that the
Christ must suffer and so enter into glory. The events leading to the crucifixion and death of Jesus were a
mockery of justice: treachery by a follower and collusion by Caiaphas, Pilate, Herod and their forces. They
all knew Jesus was innocent; yet, they condemned him. Jesus took the false accusations, abuse, spit and
mockery with a divine serenity. The method of his execution was the most shameful way a criminal could be
condemned at the time, but Jesus was innocent, and he underwent all of this for your sake and for my sake.
One of the two criminals crucified with Jesus had a change of heart before his death. The true identity of
this man remains a speculation. Even though we don’t know a lot about this man, the little we know is
worth our reflections. We know that he was a criminal who knew he deserved punishment due to his crime.
We know that although he was in extreme pain, he was touched by the compassion of Jesus next to him on
the cross. He heard Jesus forgive his persecutors, and he also sought forgiveness from Jesus. He called out
to him, “Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” And he heard the Lord promise him that
he would be the first to enjoy Christ’s victory: “I tell you, this day, you will be with me in paradise.” The saying of the “good thief” has become our own saying: Lord, remember me when you come into your kingdom.
This saying has been rendered into song by the Taize community: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom.” This showed us that as long as we acknowledge our sins, Christ’s redemptive power will
save us. It also shows that as long as we are alive, it is never too late to turn to Christ.
This Tuesday is the Chrism Mass at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart at 7pm. During the Mass, Cardinal
DiNardo, along with all the priests in the Archdiocese, will bless and consecrate the oils that will be used for
sacraments from Easter Vigil until next Easter. It is a beautiful celebration during which the priests will also
renew their commitment to their priestly ministry. In this celebration, the entire Church is fully present as
we will have in attendance many permanent deacons, religious men and women and lay faithful who love
the Church.
The three days before Easter, beginning with Holy Thursday, is called Triduum. There will be no morning
Mass in the parish on Thursday. The only Mass we will celebrate is the Mass of the Lord’s Supper at
7:30pm. The Mass concludes with a Eucharistic procession to the Family Life Center, where we will adore
Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament until midnight. There is no Mass on Good Friday; rather, we will have a 3pm
service of the Lord's Passion and veneration of cross in English and a 7pm service in Spanish. The church
will be silent until the Easter Vigil on Saturday at 8:30pm. If you have never attended any of the Triduum
liturgy, I invite you come and celebrate with us. It is the most solemn event of the Church. As the mystery of
our salvation again unfolds this week, let us take active participation in all the liturgical celebrations. Let us
take on the example of Christ, who gave up his life so that we might gain life. As we conclude the Lenten
season, let us continue to celebrate the victory of Christ over sin and death. Have a blessed Holy Week!

Jubilee Year of Mercy
Misericordiae Vultus: The Face of Mercy is Pope Francis’s official decree announcing this Jubilee Year of Mercy. But Francis
had already declared that Jesus “has shown the face of God’s mercy” back in 2013 on his first Palm Sunday as pope. Francis
described Luke’s account of Jesus’s entrance into Jerusalem: “Crowds, celebrating, praise, blessing, peace: joy fills the air.
Jesus has awakened great hopes, especially in the hearts of the simple, the humble, the poor, the forgotten, those who do not
matter in the eyes of the world. He understands human sufferings . . . has bent down to heal body and soul.” Entering Jerusalem, Jesus looks at all of us with love, Francis continued, at our sicknesses and sins. “A beautiful scene, full of light—the light
of the love of Jesus” (Pope Francis, Palm Sunday homily, March 24, 2013). May this Jubilee Year’s Holy Week and Triduum
make us Jesus’s own light-bearers and love-givers to all who long to see the Face of Mercy.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY: Bookkeeper
St. Mary Magdalene Catholic Church is seeking a Parish Bookkeeper with experience. Duties include, but
are not limited to, recording weekly collections and
other cash receipts, preparing payroll and financial
reports, and maintaining donor records. Candidate
must have a working knowledge of and strong commitment to the mission of the Archdiocese and the
Catholic Church, be able to maintain confidentiality,
and be proficient in computer technology, which includes word processing and spreadsheets.

Home Again Ministry and the Year of Mercy
It seems very fitting that this new ministry has
taken off during this Year of Mercy that was
called for by Pope Francis! His wish for all of
us to be ambassadors of mercy to others was
also emphasized in our recent Lenten Mission.
Home Again provides new beginnings for families who are
forced to start over due to natural disaster or personal
crisis. In the last 7 months, we have provided 30 families
with new or gently used furniture and household items at
no cost to them. We have done this through generous
donations from our friends and parishioners. Sadly, families falling into a crisis situation is an ongoing story, and
therefore, Home Again’s need for donations is ongoing.
At this time, we accept donations by appointment only.

777-1878. We have a small group of parishioners helping
out so far, but we would love to have others join us! Not
only do we need household donations, but we also need
people that can donate a few hours of their time to help
distribute items as well as help pick up donations. If you
feel moved to help Home Again in any of these capacities,
please contact us!
We will be having a “Donation Day” on Saturday April 9.
Anyone with new or gently used items to donate can drop
them off here at St. Mary’s from 9 A.M.—Noon. Items can
be furniture, kitchen items, and clean linens. We will collect donations in the parking lot next to McGivney Hall.
This is a perfect way to participate meaningfully in this
Year of Mercy.
Summary:
Working under the direct supervision of the Director of
Faith Formation for Children and Youth, and in collaboration with the other Formation department directors and
staff, the Faith Formation secretary is a full-time staff member responsible for providing administrative and ministerial
support to the Formation staff and its programming.
Education / Experience:
Qualified applicant must be an active and practicing Catholic in full communion with the Church; must possess strong
organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills;
must be fluently bilingual in English and Spanish, and have
the ability to both speak and write / translate; must be able
to deal effectively and efficiently with fluctuating demands
and workload; have the ability to work collaboratively in a
team environment; must have experience using Windowsbased computers with Microsoft Office software. Applicants
are required to also complete and maintain personal VIRTUS / Safe Environment compliance.

DIVINE MERCY MESSAGE AND DEVOTION
Divine Mercy: A Way of Life
On Good Friday 1937, Jesus requested that St.
Faustina make a special Novena before the Feast of
Mercy, from Good Friday through the following Saturday. He, Himself, dictated the intentions for each
day. He said, “I desire that during these nine days,
you bring souls to the fountain of My mercy, that
they may draw from there strength and refreshment and whatever grace they have need of in
the hardships of life, and especially at the hour
of death. On each day, you will bring to My heart
a different group of souls, and you will immerse
them in this ocean of My mercy…” (Diary,1209).
“By this Novena, I will grant every possible grace
to souls” (796).
To prepare for the Feast we must also practice the ABCs of Mercy:
Ask for His Mercy (Pray constantly, repent sins, ask for mercy for
ourselves and the world.)
Be Merciful (Let the mercy received from God flow through us to others.)
Completely Trust (The more we trust, the more graces we can receive
-no trust, no graces.)
It is not necessary for you to pray the novena in church. We invite the whole community to come and pray with us. However, if you
are unable to come, please pray the novena at home wherever it is
convenient.

Youth Ministry News
Formation / CCE Classes: All Formation / CCE classes are off for one more week as we prepare for Holy Week (March
20th – 23rd). Weekday classes will resume next Tuesday, March 29th at 6:00pm and Sunday, April 3rd at 3:00pm in the St.
Paul Center. Parents are reminded to be on time to pick up your child(ren) at the end of their CCE session!
“Youth Nights”: As we prepare to remember Jesus’s passion and death this week, we will have two youth ministry events.
There will be a high school “Holy Week reflection and Silent Football” on Sunday, March 20th from 6:30pm – 8:00pm in the
Youth Room. Please note that there will not be a middle school event this week due to Holy Thursday Mass. We are planning to show “The Passion of the Christ” on Good Friday, March 25th at Noon in the Youth Room, then move to the church
at 3:00pm for the English service (permission forms are required for this event; please contact Mike or Carissa by phone or
email). Parents and youth are invited to join our new “Remind” text message groups for timely information and updates
about our high school youth and middle school youth events (see below!). Next week: NO high school event on Easter Sunday, March 27th; middle school “Sports Night” on Thursday, March 31st from 6:00pm – 7:30pm.
2017 Confirmation ORIENTATION: Parents of students who are currently in the 9th, 10th, or 11th grades and who missed
the first Confirmation Orientation meeting in January should plan to attend the “Make-Up Orientation Meeting” on Tuesday, March 22nd at 7:00pm in the Family Life Center. At this important gathering, we will be reviewing archdiocesan and
parish Confirmation guidelines, calendars, and retreat details… Students are welcome to attend, but parents MUST attend.
This will be the only make-up opportunity for this meeting; if a parent does not attend this meeting, their student will be
transferred to the 2018 Confirmation class, and we will try this again next year. You can also sign up for text message
reminders by registering for the “Remind” service listed below.
2016 Confirmation CLASS: Candidates are reminded that our eighth weekly Confirmation class is coming up on Wednesday, March 23rd from 7:00pm – 9:00pm in the FLC. Please remember that all requested paperwork is now past due: baptism
certificates, service logs, saint reports, scavenger hunt, and unpaid retreat payments! The Confirmation Mass is coming up on
Saturday, April 9th at 1:00pm with Bishop Sheltz!
2016- 2017 Formation / CCE Registration: It’s already time to start planning for next year’s formation and sacrament preparation classes! Our first “early registration” event is scheduled for Saturday, April 2nd from 2:00pm – 5:00pm in the Family
Life Center. The remaining “early registration” dates are Saturday, May 7th and Saturday, June 4th (2:00pm – 5:00pm, Family Life Center). There will also be a “late registration event” in August. Please note these will be the only opportunities to
register for classes. Payment in full is expected at the time of registration; however, no one will be turned away due to an
inability to pay… All you need to do is talk to Fr. Felix, and he can approve a tuition waiver.
Eucharist Preparation Classes: Our third Eucharist preparation class is coming up on Monday, April 11th from 6:00pm –
7:30pm. Parents should take their child(ren) to the student classes in the 2-story Education Building, and then check-in at the
church (English parent meeting) or the Family Life Center (Spanish parent meeting). The student’s sacrament books should
be completed, and we will conduct the Eucharist interviews in class that night. Please be sure to send the blue sacrament
book to class!
Summer Study CCE: Our two-week summer intensive program is scheduled for the last two weeks of June: Monday, June
20th – Friday, June 24th (6:30pm – 9:00pm) and Monday, June 27th – Friday, July 1st (6:30pm – 9:00pm). “Summer Study” is
open to all incoming students, Kindergarten through High School. If you are interested in helping teach one of the elementary, middle school, and high school classes, please contact Mike Smith or Carissa Bull for additional information about serving as a catechist. We are required to have at least two adults in each class, and free training is provided! You do not have to
be a professional teacher to be a catechist. All that is needed is a heart for young people and a desire to share the faith God
has already put in your heart.

Light Dispels Darkness
Ivana Meshell, Director of Adult Faith Formation
Today we find ourselves at the apex of Lent—the most important week of the year in all Christendom.
It is Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion, the beginning of Holy Week. The date for Easter was fixed
when, in the year 325, bishops met at the Council of Nicea (in present-day Turkey) where, among other things,
they decided that the celebration of Easter should take place on the first Sunday following the first full moon after
the Spring Equinox. This is one of the two times each year when the sun crosses the celestial equator and the day
has approximately equal times of daylight and darkness. This is the point in the yearly cycle when balance exists
between light and dark. As winter turns to spring, the natural phenomenon of darkness giving way to light provides
a fitting symbol for the darkness of sin giving way to the light of the Son of God—Jesus, the Sun of Justice and
Peace, who himself said, “I Am the light of the world” (John 9:5).
I don’t see well at night. My husband, James, says that he can see fairly well in the dark; but as for me, if I don’t
put a night light on, I am quite apt to trip over a familiar piece of furniture in the middle of the night. I can’t manage
a simple walk to the kitchen in the dark. Without light, darkness rules absolutely. Darkness is definitive; nothing
can remedy it except light. In my own home, I am utterly helpless without a glimmer of light. This image helps me
understand how important God is in my life. Without the light of Christ, I am completely lost in darkness and sin.
It’s not that I can manage a little without him. I can’t manage at all! I cannot substitute something else for that light;
there is no substitute. I need Christ’s light to dispel the darkness of my life.
On the night Jesus was arrested, he said to his captors, “Day after day I was with you in the temple area, and you
did not seize me; but this is your hour, the time for the power of darkness” (Luke 22:53). We are all too aware
that darkness indeed has its hour. There is not a single person among us who has not experienced darkness, either through personal sin or in the pain and difficulty of everyday life. At times, it seems, darkness rules. Yet, when
the light is turned on, the darkness has to go. It simply has to. Darkness is absolutely and totally overcome with
light. When walking into a dark room, as soon as the light switch is turned on, darkness instantly disappears. As
powerful as darkness is, it is utterly powerless in the presence of light.
Each year we begin the Easter Vigil at sundown by lighting the New Fire. From this fire, we light the Easter Candle, itself a symbol of Christ. Entering the Church, the priest or deacon elevates the candle and chants, “Christ, our
light” to which the assembly responds, “Thanks be to God!” Soon, everyone in the church receives a candle lit
from the Easter candle. We see a beautiful glow. Each of us is reminded that we have the power to hold on to the
light. We have, through the power of God’s grace, the ability to switch on the light by refusing to be mastered by
sin. We can throw on the light in the midst of darkness and negativity. We dispel darkness through prayer and actions that reflect the love of Christ. We can stop believing in darkness and believe in the power of God’s love to
save us. Light comes because God gives it. Light comes when we have the courage to receive it. This week,
Christians throughout the world will reflect upon the meaning of Jesus's death on the cross, an event that took
place nearly two millennia ago at a place which still remains an epicenter of religious and political violence today.
This time of year, the tug-of-war between good and evil is symbolized by the image of light and darkness. We
know how the story ends, yet each of us is still a part of the story. At our baptism, we were each given a candle,
“to be kept burning brightly…so that the flame of faith is alive in our heart.” Because of what God has done for us
in Christ, the light is available and the Holy Spirit is very much willing to give it. This week, let’s take our candles
and go light our world.
As a special favor we ask you to pray in a special way this week for your parish staff who has been working hard
to serve you. By God’s grace we have been given the ability to serve you, and we do so with gladness. We can
only continue to do this with your love, prayers and support, for which we are truly grateful. Please pray that we will
identify and hire the additional personnel that we need to complete our staff and that God will give us the wisdom
and strength we need in our work. We think of you every day while we work and endeavor to help all of us become
better disciples of Jesus. Thank you for your care for us!
As we enter into this holiest of weeks, let us remain in a spirit of prayer for one another. Please consider attending all of the
services of Holy Thursday, Good Friday and the Easter Vigil after sundown on Holy Saturday. This is quite a commitment;
not everyone is in a position to do this. Yet these three Holy Days are like making a spiritual pilgrimage. Most of us cannot go
to the Holy Land and walk where Jesus walked, but we can spiritually take that journey. Easter means so much more when we
have fully participated in Holy Thursday and Good Friday. If you have never done this, you owe it to yourself to have this experience at least once in your lifetime. If you can’t do it this year, put this on your “things to do before I die” list. If you cannot attend all of the services, please make every effort to set these three days aside as “holy” in your life, joining your prayers
with those of your fellow Christians. May we be blessed this Holy Week!

¡Bienvenidos a las celebraciones de la SEMANA SANTA! Este es el punto culminante del
año litúrgico de la Iglesia en el cual recordamos y celebramos de forma única el misterio
de nuestra salvación—el sufrimiento, la crucifixión, la muerte y la resurrección de Cristo.
Hoy es el Domingo de Ramos, o el Domingo de la Pasión. Nuestra liturgia comienza con
una procesión con ramos hacia la iglesia, la cual nos recuerda de la procesión triunfadora de Jesús hacia Jerusalén. Luego leemos la historia de la pasión. El Jesús que fue aclamado como Rey ahora será
despreciado y rechazado por el pueblo. Todo lo que Jesús hizo fue por nuestra salvación. A fin de cuentas, él cumplió la profecía antigua que el Cristo debe sufrir y de esa forma entrar a la gloria. Los eventos
que nos llevan a la crucifixión y muerte de Jesús fueron una burla de la justicia: traición por un seguidor y confabulación entre Caifás, Pilato, Herodes y sus fuerzas. Todos ellos sabían que Jesús era
inocente, y aun así lo condenaron. Jesús toleró las acusaciones falsas, el abuso, las escupidas y las burlas con una serenidad divina. Este método de su ejecución fue la manera más vergonzosa de la cual un
criminal podía ser condenado en esos tiempos, pero Jesús era inocente y pasó por todo eso por ti y por
mí.
Uno de los dos criminales que fueron crucificados con Jesús tuvo un cambio de corazón antes de su
muerte. La verdadera identidad de este hombre permanece en especulación. Aunque no sabemos mucho acerca de este hombre, lo poco que sabemos vale la pena reflexionar. Sabemos que él era un criminal que sabía que necesitaba castigo por su crimen. Sabemos que aunque estaba en dolor extremo, él
fue conmovido por la compasión de Jesús a lado de él en la cruz. Él escuchó a Jesús perdonar a sus perseguidores y también buscó perdón de Jesús. Él le dijo a Jesús, “Señor, cuando llegues a tu Reino,
acuérdate de mí”. Y él escuchó al Señor prometerle que él iba a ser el primero en disfrutar el triunfo de
Cristo: “Yo te aseguro que hoy estarás conmigo en el paraíso”. El dicho del “ladrón bueno” se ha convertido en nuestro propio dicho: Señor, cuando llegues a tu Reino, acuérdate de mí. Este dicho ha sido reproducido en canción por la comunidad Taize: “Jesús, acuérdate de mí cuando llegues a tu Reino”. Esto
nos demuestra que mientras reconozcamos nuestros pecados, el poder redentor de Cristo nos salvará.
También nos demuestra que mientras estamos vivos, nunca es muy tarde para volver hacia Cristo.
Este martes es la misa de crismo en la Co-Catedral del Sagrado Corazón a las 7 P.M. Durante la misa el
Cardenal DiNardo, junto con todos los sacerdotes en la Arquidiócesis, bendecirá y consagrará los aceites que se usarán para los sacramentos desde la Vigilia de Pascua hasta la Pascua del próximo año. Es
una hermosa celebración en la cual los sacerdotes también renovarán su compromiso a su ministerio
sacerdotal. En esta celebración, la Iglesia entera está presente, ya que tendremos a muchos en asistencia que son diáconos permanentes, hombres y mujeres religiosos y laicos fieles que aman a la Iglesia.
Los tres días antes de la Pascua, comenzando con el Jueves Santo, se conocen como el Triduo. No habrá
misa por la mañana en la parroquia el jueves. La única misa que celebraremos será la Misa de la Cena
del Señor a las 7:30 P.M. La misa concluye con una procesión eucarística hacia el Centro Familiar, en
donde adoraremos a Jesús en el Santísimo Sacramento hasta la medianoche. No habrá misa el viernes
santo; en lugar de esta, tendremos un servicio de la Pasión del Señor y la veneración de la cruz en ingles
a las 3 P.M. y un servicio en español a las 7 P.M. La iglesia permanecerá en silencio hasta la Vigilia de
Pascua el sábado a las 8:30 P.M. Si nunca han asistido a ninguna de la liturgia del Triduo, los invito a
que vengan a celebrar con nosotros. Este es el evento más solemne de la Iglesia. Mientras el misterio de
nuestra salvación se despliega esta semana, participemos activamente en todas las celebraciones litúrgicas. Tomemos el ejemplo que Cristo, quien dio su vida para que nosotros pudiéramos ganar vida.
Mientras concluimos la época Cuaresmal, continuemos celebrando el triunfo de Cristo sobre el pecado
y sobre la muerte. ¡Que tengan una Semana Santa muy bendecida!

Nuestro primer evento de inscripción adelantada está
programado para el sábado, 2 de abril de 2 a 5 P.M. en el
Centro Familiar. Las otras fechas de inscripción adelantada serán el sábado, 7 de mayo y el sábado, 4 de junio
(2 a 5 P.M. en el Centro Familiar). También habrá un evento de inscripción de ultimo minuto en agosto. Estas serán las únicas oportunidades para inscribirse para las
clases para este nuevo año escolar.

Año Jubilar de la Misericordia
Misericordiae Vultus: El rosto de la Misericordia es el documento oficial (en este caso una
Bula papal) anunciando este Año Jubilar de

esta junta, estaremos revisando los requisitos de Confirmación arquidiocesanos y de la parroquia, los calendarios y los detalles de los retiros. Los estudiantes pueden asistir, pero los padres DEBEN asistir. Esta será
la ultima oportunidad para esta junta; si un padre no
asiste a esta junta, su estudiante será transferido a la
clase de Confirmación del 2018.
