There is a common misconception that starry sky protection means a complete closure of all lights, or conversely, that a significant increase of lights would make the environment safer. In fact, in order to light safely, we need simply to choose light fixtures with adequate colour and intensity, and make sure that they operate when necessary... and in the right direction! To improve cohabitation between pedestrians and cars, Mont-Mégantic National Park recently installed new light units near reception facilities. Theses units are nevertheless quite special: they are made of amber light-emitting diodes (LED). Amber LEDs allow the preservation of starry skies while taking advantage of the technology’s benefits, which is energy efficiency, use of dimmers and long life. This is a first for Quebec National parks! It should be pointed out that white LED lighting units, which are becoming more and more popular, unfortunately generate an increase of light pollution, which not only veils the natural show of our starry vault, but also disrupts biological rhythms synchronized with day and night alternation. As for amber LEDs, they will make it possible to preserve the grandiose spectacle of our starry skies, to protect nature rhythms and to better light our environment!
