Looking at the second quarter, as we move
into the third quarter of the year, I can say with
certainty that the results have been positive.
During this quarter, as with every other one, we will
be working on further penetrating more markets
and we look forward to channeling our resources

Witnessing the expansions and start-ups during

us to provide an environment suited for business.
But none of this would have been possible without our investors
and their expertise in business as well as their dedication. I
would like to take this opportunity to once again thank all our
investors for their continued support over the years and for the
confidence they have shown in us which fuels us to do better.
Warm regards

The North Germany -based SOEX

of 2017.
“We have leased a 322,917 square

Sharjah Airport International Free
Zone.

After signing the contract at the headquarters of Hamriyah
Free Zone Authority, Saud Salim Al Mazrouei said:
“SOEX has acquired a land area of 322,917 square feet
in phase two of Hamriyah Free Zone and we remain
committed to giving our valued customers the best
possible infrastructure to help support their growth
aspirations.”
“This step will enable them to grow in the region
and we see this development as another
example of our efforts in empowering
businesses paying off,” Al Mazrouei further

be done by retaining used textiles

preserving natural

and the environment in the

grade and sort – until there
is nothing left to sort. The
highest priority in this is
the prevention of waste; which is why

Celebration
Employees celebrate
Haq Al Layla
From Haq Al Layla celebrations
Hamriyah Free Zone Authority
(HFZA) employees celebrated Haq Al
Layla with various programs on 22nd
May.
Haq Al Layla, which focuses on
strengthening the national identity
and deepening the local heritage,
means ‘give me my right tonight’. It
is an annual traditional event that is
celebrated to mark the arrival of the
month of Ramadan. On the 15th day
of the month of Sha’aban, children
dress in traditional clothes and visit
homes in their neighborhood to
collect sweets and treats. The children
go door-to-door with decorated bags
to sing and collect sweets, nuts and
money.
During their visit, children sing
a
traditional
song
‘Atoona
Allah
yaa’teekoum
bet
Makah
yewadeekoum,’ which means ‘Give to
us and Allah will give to you, and, with
His grace, you will visit Makkah’.
“Haq Al Layla reminds us to
think of one another – especially
our
forgotten-about-neighbors
nowadays. It is a tradition inherited
through the generations over the
years with the ultimate goal of
instilling joy in the hearts of children
and strengthening the community.”
said Noura Al Suwaidi, Head of Marketing in Hamriyah Free Zone Authority.
“It’s a great ice-breaker and a good start for kids not only to get to know one
another in the neighborhood but to learn to give too,” she added.
Saud Salim Al Mazrouei, Director of HFZA and Sharjah Airport International Free
Zone (SAIF Zone); Ali Al Jarwan, Deputy Commercial Director of HFZA, and other
senior officials all attended Haq Al Layla celebrations.
These types of celebrations are practiced in many cultures. The tradition is
celebrated mid-Sha’aban across the Muslim community and is referred to by
different names. In Qatar it is called Garangao, in Bahrain it is called Gergaoon,
in Oman it is called Garangesho, and in Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, it is called
Gargean.

Celebration
Ramadan:
Why is it important in the
Muslim faith?
Iftar party progresses at Al Jawaher Reception & Convention Centre in Sharjah on June 15
Ramadan is the name of the ninth
month in the Islamic lunar calendar.
It is an important month in the
Islamic calendar and culture. Each
day during the month of Ramadan,
Muslims around the world observe
the sacred month by fasting during
day light hours (from dawn to
sunset), performing nightly prayers
in addition to the daily obligatory
prayers, and concluding each day’s
fast over food with family and
friends. At the end of the month is
a three-day holiday that celebrates
the conclusion of Ramadan with Eid
al-Fitr and prepares individuals to
return to their regular daily routine.
Fasting is one of the pillars of
Islam. Fasting is compulsory upon
every sane, adult, healthy Muslim

male and female. People who are
insane, minors, and those who are
traveling, menstruating, or going
through post-childbirth bleeding,
and the elderly and breast-feeding
or pregnant women do not need to
observe the fast.
There are those who may not fast
but have to make up for the missed
days of fasting at a later date.
These include those who are ill (not
chronically) and travelers. Elderly
men and women are exempted from
fasting; so are the chronically ill, and
those who have to perform difficult
jobs under harsh circumstances and
who could not find any other way to
support themselves. They are not
obliged to make up the days they
missed and are obliged to feed one
poor person a day (for every day of
fasting that they do not perform).
Though the young are not required
to fast, it is proper for their parents
or guardians to encourage them to
fast so they will become accustomed
to it at an early age. They may fast
as long as they are able to and then
break it.
The main objective of fasting is to

Iftar Party
achieve piety and righteousness.
During Ramadan while individuals
abstain from food and drink during
day light hours, they get together
over food with families and friends
in the evenings. The meal with
which the fast is broken is called
iftar. Usually the meal is simple,
designed to provide nourishment,
but may sometimes be sumptuous
when there is a large get-together of
family and friends.

Celebration
Abstaining from food has great
ramification on the person observing
the fast, physical as well as spiritual.
It is an exercise for the discipline
and control of the baser self. One
learns how to restrain one’s urges
and desires. Fasting frees the person
from the bondage of lusts and
desires. Abstaining from intakes
also reminds us of the less fortunate
ones, the poor and the destitute.
Fasting gives us a general sense of
how they feel. It boosts the morale
of the poor by knowing that even
kings have to go hungry for a while.
Fasting makes the rich realise and
understand what the poor goes
through day after day. Fasting also
purifies one’s heart and tongue. One
is urged to control himself and learn
how to abstain from vain talk, lying
and cheating. Although fasting is
beneficial to health, it is mainly a
method of self-purification and selfrestraint. By cutting oneself from
worldly comforts, even for a short
time, a fasting person focuses on his
or her purpose in life by constantly
being aware of the presence of God.
The month of Ramadan is not only
the month of fasting. It is also the
month of the holy Qur’an. Ramadan is
the (month) in which the Qur’an was
sent down, as a guide to mankind.
Practicing Muslims congregate at
mosques observing the nightly
prayers (tarawih) that start after the
last prayer of the day, about an hour
and a half after sunset. The nightly
prayers usually last for nearly an
hour. Every night the Imam (leader
in prayer) recites an equal portion
of the Qur’an so that by the 27th or
the 29th night of Ramadan the entire
Qur’an would have been recited by
the Imam from his memory.
As the end of Ramadan approaches,
Muslims prepare for Eid al-fitr (end
of fasting celebration), which draws
Ramadan to a close. Eid is a time of
giving gifts, sharing food, gathering
with family and taking a holiday.
This year’s HFZA Iftar party, which
was conducted under the leadership
of Noura Al Suwaidi, Head of
Marketing in Hamriyah Free Zone
Authority, attracted a number of
staff and senior officials including
Saud Salim Al Mazrouei, Director
of HFZA and Sharjah Airport
International Free Zone (SAIF Zone),
Ali Al Jarwan, Deputy Commercial
Director of HFZA, and others. As part
of the celebration, the organisers
also gave away a number of gifts to
the attendees.

Growing Sharjah Seaports
Sharjah’s three seaports function as a gateway for businesses to access international markets
for suppliers and buyers alike. Read more about Sharjah’s bustling seaports which utilise its
advantageous geographic location to tap into new international and domestic markets.
Sharjah has three deep-water ports
that are dynamic outlets supporting
import and export movement to and
from the emirate.
Sharjah’s main ports are located
at: Sharjah (Port Khalid), Hamriyah
suburb (Hamriyah port) on the
coast of the Arabian Gulf, and in the
eastern area of Khorfakkan city (Port
Khorfakkan) where Oman Gulf meets
the Indian Ocean.
rest of the GCC states, India and
promising markets in Asia and Africa.
Sharjah has connected these ports
with the Sharjah International
Airport by a commercial bridge
that saves shipping time which in
turn helps to decrease insurance
costs and guarantees speed of
transportation. In addition, it assures

tractors, yard cranes, tugs and
forklifts of various capacities.
The port operates 24 hours a day
throughout the year.
Khorfakkan Port
The port is known for providing
fast services for international liner
operators whose operations are
time sensitive for shipping and
unloading. Major container line
operators find Port Khorfakkan ideal
for transshipping their goods.
Overlooking the eastern seaboard,
Khorfakkan Port is the connection
to Asia and the Far East on one
side, and the Middle East, European
countries and the African countries
on the other.
Port Khorfakkan was established in
1978 and started its operations on
21st February, 1979 with a total area
of 100,000 sqm, two berths of 430
metres, two cantilever cranes and
four yard container cranes.
Khorfakkan Port is one of the world’s
leading container trans-shipment
ports, largely due to its proximity
to the main international east-west
shipping routes. It has an overall
storage space of 450,000sqm,
storage facility for over 45,000
TEUs, a 3,000sqm dedicated transit
shed, storage area for LCL cargo, and
the ability to accommodate more
than 1,000 reefer containers at the
facility.
In 1987, Gulftainer Ltd. became the
official operator of the Khorfakkan
Terminal at the port. During the
period from 1991 to 1999, the port
witnessed a lot of development, and
since 2008, it has accommodated
more than 1800 container carriers
and cruise ships annually.
Port Khalid
Port Khalid
Port Khalid, the first container
terminal in the Middle East, is located
in the heart of the Sharjah city. The
port has a roll-on/roll-off cargo
terminal and a free trade terminal.
Port Khalid also has a number of
berths with a variety of shipping
assets, ranging from general, reefer,
dry, liquid and bulk cargo to container
and oil and offshore support services.
Port Khalid enjoys many first-rate
characteristics
and
developed
services that make it attractive
to import and export movement,
transshipping, and other cargo
activities.
The maximum depth of the port is
12.5 metres, so the port is suitable for
most ships, with its number of berths
being 21 plus one oil terminal.
The port has four shore-side gantry
cranes with supporting terminal

the period 2004-2008 involved
expansion of the port by adding two

two container terminals with 14m
berth depths, and an inner harbor of
5-7m berth depths.
Logistically, Khorfakkan is very close
to the Arabian Gulf as the port is
linked by a network of national
highways with other neighboring
GCC States and is adjacent to the
main world shipping routes which
join the Far East and the Indian
Continent with Africa, Europe and
the Americas.
In order to fulfill the demands of the
expanding free zone and within the
visionary directives of His Highness
Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al
Qasimi, Supreme Council Member
and Ruler of Sharjah, and under
the supervision of Sheikh Khaled
bin Abdullah Al Qasimi, Chairman
of Department of Seaports and
Customs and Sharjah Free Zones,
a huge development process was
carried out including the addition of
an inner harbor. The inner harbor’s
first and second phases were opened
in 2003 at the cost of AED 180
million.
Khorfakkan Port makes Sharjah the
only emirate to have ports on both
the coasts of the Persian Gulf and
the Gulf of Oman.

Built in 1986, the activities of this
deep-water port include the export

reclamations of the areas adjacent
to the port has brought the total area
to two million square metres. Today,
the port has facilities to import/
export shipments including dry bulk
cargoes, general cargo, project cargo
manufactured at HFZ, and oil and
gas products.
The depth of water berths in the port
is 14 metres, which enables the port
to accommodate various types of
cargo vessels and tankers, providing
an added advantage for the
investors at HFZ. The port benefits
and serves the needs not only of
companies within the free zone, but
also of industries located in the other
northern emirates.
The inner harbor in Hamriyah Free

support activities, and several
related industries prosper from the
activities of the offshore oil and gas
sector.

Seaports and Customs often
organises various training courses
