AROUND THE WORLD
New Genes Contributing to Autism
Discovered; Genetic Links Between
Neurodevelopment & Psychiatric Disorders
Researchers from 15 institutions in three countries
conducting investigations have discovered
chromosomal abnormalities in 33 genes linked to
Autism and other clinical situations. Further study
of balanced chromosome abnormalities (BCAs)
allows scientists to screen genomes of individuals
who found breakpoints and rearrangements in
genes which caused disruptions in non-protein
coding regions.

hard-to-find chromosomal abnormalities has identified 33 genes associated with autism and related
disorders, 22 for the first time. (© Lily Fotolia)
Thailand Takes First Steps on Long Road
to Inclusive Mainstream Education
Nuey’s story of having Down’s Syndrome meant
she nearly had to attend a boarding school over
80Km from her home to be provided with an
education but her ending is one of the many
benefits of Thailand’s new Inclusive Education
policy. Through policy change and foundations like
the “Good Child Foundation” Thailand is on its way
to a complete inclusive mainstream education.

Child Foundation intervened. (© Andrew Chambers)
