BLUE VALLEY TIMES FEBRUARY 16, 2016 Trick Tray for Caryssa Joy By Anne Brown PEN ARGYL- Caryssa Joy is 26 years old. She has severe mental disabilities, cerebral palsy, unsteady gait, non-verbal, seizures and requires full care. Her family is in-need of help to keep her living at home with them. They need to add an addition onto their home that gives her safety and room to grow and learn. There will be a tricky tray held on March 20th from 1-4pm at East Bangor Firehall, 30 E. Central Ave, East Bangor. After losing her first born to S.I.D.S., Kelly Giamoni is determined to do whatever she can to keep her daughter home. “I was completely devastated after she was born but knew I was in for the journey with her! She was fed through a tube, placed on seizure meds and endured so many tests & surgeries. I never left her side!” She relies on an adult for one to one care. She has seizures nightly, her needs are great and to this point the family has made it by with what they had, but now they need safety. “I can no longer risk falls, unheard seizures, equipment we could use to help her exercise needs to be in one room, not in the attic and garage because we haven’t the space for it, we need help! The cost of an addition is very costly and to defray some of the cost we are designing a tricky tray to bring people out to have fun and for us to start a savings for her addition. We need so much to make it to our dream an architect, builders, material, and all that will go into putting in an addition.” Kelly’s 8 year old son, Kelton wants to help his sister in anyway he can. This year for Columbus Day the kids made a boat and on the flag they wrote something they dreamed for. While most kids dream of things for themselves, he wrote “To raise money for my sister who is special needs because I want a better home for her”. “My two year old loves to sit with her sister and watch movies and help with what she can and my 25 year old helps out during the week to give us a break to spend time with our other children.” PAGE 5 We are 37 days away from the tricky tray and with 78 baskets promised and hoping to hit 100 by the event. We need basket donations, gift certificates and the word of this event to help us be successful. Whatever you can do, we TRULY appreciate!! Any questions, please call me at 610-597-1995. “I have supported my daughter for 26 years out of my great love for her and never knew how many people were watching and how many admired what I do and have done is a feeling undesirable!” The family is looking for people who will volunteer to draw up plans for the addition, builders who will help build, donation of material and anything else that would go into the addition. Any help or donation would be greatly appreciated. Find us on Facebook “Crying for Caryssa”. Apartment For Rent By Denise Crawn BANGOR - As young girls, Queens and Fairy Tales were woven into the fabric of our lives. As young women, we searched for the Fairy Tale and became invested in the happily ever after. As we mature and grow, many of us find that the Fairy Tale has eluded us and we are far away from embracing “the crown” and calling ourselves, Queen. What if we have been living the real-life fairy tale all along? What if happily ever after exists here and now? During this retreat weekend we will use art, song, poetry, movement, nature, ritual and much needed time alone to release, renew and reclaim our sovereignty. We will come together as a community of women to witness, support and welcome each woman into her own personal kingdom. Come join Denise Crawn and Anita Bondi on July 29th - July 31st At Kirkridge for a Women’s Retreat: Becoming the Queen of Your Own Real-Life Faerie Tale. Contact Denise at the Booknest at Kirkridge: 2495 Fox Gap Road, Bangor, PA 610-588-1793. A few times temperatures didn’t go above 0° for a whole week. That was when outside oil storage tanks would cause problems and water pipes would freeze and cars wouldn’t start and a host of other problems would crop up that were not fun to deal with in those temperatures. Lately, we have been spoiled by winters that only dish out a day or two of these cold temperatures but you still should be prepared for the possibility of something going wrong on those cold days. Last Sunday morning it was near 0° and power went out for a number of homes in Bushkill Township. I’m sure the power company scrambled to get things back up for them but what can be done during a power outage in these cold temperatures? Number one is don’t let any warm air out of your home and don’t let any cold air in. Keep doors closed and close drapes and don’t go up into the attic looking for blankets or anything. As soon as you open the attic entrance, all of the warmest air in your home will be gone in seconds. Don’t run any unvented gas appliances inside your home. No gas grilles or charcoal grilles should ever be used inside. They pump out huge amounts of carbon monoxide and can kill you in less than an hour. If you have a portable generator and a provision to connect it to your gas or oil furnace, you will be all set to keep the house warm. The connection to that furnace should be installed by a professional so that it is safe and reliable. It is a very good way to let a small generator maintain heat inside your home during a power outage without a lot of expensive hardware. Never run a generator in an attached garage or basement. They also generate huge amounts of carbon monoxide and will kill you in short order. Most portable generators won’t run a heat pump or more than a single electric heater so if you have a type of heat that can’t be operated from a portable generator you might want to have one infrared electric heater to move around the house on an extension cord to keep pipes from freezing in isolated areas. Open the cabinet doors under the kitchen and bathroom sinks and let the heat from the room go in there to prevent freezing. Planning ahead is the best way to avoid a panic situation during an unexpected power outage. Ken Field is the owner of Slate Belt Energy.
