The students graduating today join the ranks of more than 63,000 proud alumni from our campus during our fifty-plus year history. Commencement marks the completion of one important phase of a student’s life, but it also signals the beginning of the rest of life’s journey. On that journey, always carry the spirit of inquiry and the excitement of new discovery. Always maintain confidence in yourself, your intellect, your skills and your talents that this accomplishment has brought, and never doubt that one person can make a difference. Today is a day to celebrate your achievements — and we celebrate with you. It is also a day to recognize and acknowledge the additional responsibilities that come with those achievements. The investment made by you, your family, friends, and the faculty and staff of Sonoma State University is a considerable one. I urge you to bear in mind the responsibility — and the power — you have acquired to make this world a better place for yourself, your family and your fellow citizens. On behalf of the entire University, I offer you best wishes for the journey ahead. Sincerely, Dr. Ruben Armiñana President, Sonoma State University 4 About the University Sonoma State University is one of the 23 campuses of the California State University and enrolls 9,100 students, ranks nationally in the top tier of western public liberal arts colleges and was recently named as one of the most beautiful campuses in the country. The University first opened to 250 students in 1961 as Sonoma State College in leased buildings in Rohnert Park. The move to its permanent site of 269 acres took place in 1966, upon completion of Stevenson and Darwin Halls. In 1969, the academic master plan underwent a major revision. The new “cluster school” concept, coupled with a heightened appreciation for the rural environment, influenced the physical master plan. First to exemplify this new plan was the residential facility of 1972, Zinfandel Village. Since then five additional villages have rounded out campus housing. In 1975 a classroom building, Nichols Hall, was built and named in honor of Sonoma’s founding president Ambrose R. Nichols. and classrooms to support the needs of 21st-century science curriculum. The new Student Center, across from the Recreation Center, opened in 2013 and has become the focal point for events, dining, student services and offices. With the opening of Tuscany Village, the last residential village, the University has a student-housed community of 3,100. Additionally, the Donald and Maureen Green Music Center and its acousticallyperfect Joan & Sanford I. Weill Hall and the newlyopened Schroeder Hall bring artists from around the globe to entertain audiences and educate and enlighten students. Sonoma State University provides students with a balanced program of liberal arts and sciences and career preparation with selected professional programs in business, nursing and engineering science. Sonoma State has become an educational and cultural resource for residents in the surrounding communities. The Student Union was built in 1976 and faced the central quad. It recently became International Hall and now houses the international and study abroad programs. The Art building, a child care center and a computer center opened in 1977. In 1978, university status was officially extended to Sonoma. The community provided funds for the construction of a pool in 1982. Construction of the 475-seat Evert B. Person Theatre was completed in 1989. In June 2000, the Jean and Charles Schulz Information Center was completed to accommodate the expanded needs of the library and computing services as well as new information technologies. The year 2005 brought a student-funded recreation center and the a renovation of Darwin Hall, the science building, providing new laboratories #sonomastate5 Commencement Speaker The Honorable Mike Thompson U.S. Congressman Mike Thompson represents California’s 5th Congressional District. The district includes all of Napa and parts of Contra Costa, Lake, Solano and Sonoma counties. He was first elected in 1998. Prior to serving in Congress, Thompson represented California’s 2nd District in the California State Senate. He is a member of the House Committee on Ways and Means. Congressman Thompson is the co-founder and co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional Wine Caucus, a member and former co-chair of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, and a member of the Blue Dog Coalition, which is composed of moderate Democrats dedicated to a core set of beliefs — such as fiscal responsibility and national security — that transcend partisan politics. Congressman Thompson was the first Vietnam veteran elected to the California State Senate. He served in combat with the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant/platoon leader with the 173rd Airborne Brigade where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. He was also an instructor at the Army’s Airborne School. Congressman Thompson is recognized in Congress and throughout his district as a moderate Democrat who has built a solid reputation for bipartisan problem solving. While serving in the State Senate he authored California’s landmark Welfare Reform Act. Congressman Thompson is a small vineyard owner and was the maintenance supervisor for the Beringer Winery. He has taught public administration and state government at San Francisco State University and California State University, Chico. He is married to Janet Thompson, a family nurse practitioner. They have two sons, a firefighter and a deputy sheriff, and three grandchildren. 6 Student Speakers Bianca Tonantzin Zamora B.A. Women’s and Gender Studies Through her academic work, Bianca Tonantzin Zamora has been challenged to analyze, deconstruct and combat institutions of unequal social power. Through her studies she has found her voice and has been inspired to act as a social agent of change and woman of color feminist. She graduates with a Women’s and Gender Studies major with a concentration in Theatre and a Queer Studies minor. She has been involved for many years as a Zumba instructor at the Recreation Center, Summer Orientation leader, Summer Bridge leader, Peer Mentor for the Educational Opportunity Program, Chicano and Latino Studies and Making Our Space An Inclusive Community first year programs. She was a Vagina Monologues actress and assistant director, Tunnel of Oppression coordinator, a HUB leadership program student, Women’s Global Leadership Initiative graduate and Associated Students advocate as the diversity senator and chair of the Student Senate. One of her most memorable experiences was working with campus administrators on the creation of the University Bias Response Team and Protocol to address intolerance within the campus community. She will always remember her experiences that allowed her to see the impact of student activism and art on the SSU community. She seeks a job where she will work to empower under-represented communities. Sasha-Rose Wroten Senior, Early Childhood Studies A first generation and low-income student, Sasha-Rose Wroten has wanted to be a teacher for as long as she can remember. She came to SSU from Weed High School with intentions of completing the Hutchins program and becoming a kindergarten teacher. Her path changed but her aspirations did not. She is a senior in Early Childhood Studies and plans to continue her education with a master’s in education and a credential in multiple subject teaching. Ms. Wroten began her life on campus as a leader from the time she arrived. She worked with Associated Students as an event staffer. She was a Summer Orientation and Summer Bridge leader, and an after-school tutor. She also worked as a student assistant with the EXCEL for Youth Program and a peer mentor for the Educational Opportunity Program and Chicano and Latino Studies Program. An active member of the sorority Phi Sigma Sigma, Ms. Wroten served on the Executive Council as the Multicultural Committee Chair. She was also involved in community volunteering at Monte Vista Elementary School. As a future educator, her goal is to change negative attitudes towards public education. #sonomastate7 Staff Excellence Award Antoinette Boracchia Student Health Center Antoinette “Toni” Boracchia began her career at SSU in 1987 as a health education nurse and most recently has assumed an expanded role, incorporating her skills as an R.N. into the day-to-day operations of the Student Health Center (SHC). Ms. Boracchia’s extremely positive outlook on life enables her to light up a room with her smile. In addition to the several different health campaigns she executes, Ms. Boracchia is a co-advisor for the Student Health Advisory Committee, a student group that advocates for the health concerns and needs of students. She serves as an excellent mentor and role model in her interaction with the students and demonstrated exceptional ability to foster collaboration last year when the Student Health Advisory Committee decided to put together the now annual “Stress-Less Event.” Ms. Boracchia adeptly fostered collaboration with not only the SHC, but also other on-campus services and organizations, extending the event throughout the SSU community. Her knowledge, past experience and enthusiasm guided and inspired the committee to develop a mission and implement a plan. She also revitalized the Nutrition Counseling Program. Ms. Boracchia’s willingness to learn new skills and engage students by incorporating health cell phone apps into her nutrition counseling has made the program a success. With her encouragement to “eat a rainbow of colors” and to take walks around campus, she is a role model of good health herself. Kathryn Teixeira Office of the Dean of Education Kathryn Teixeira began her career at SSU in 1995 in the School of Education working with the California Reading and Literature Project. In 2007, she was hired as administrative support coordinator in the School of Education. The range of her skills in organizing and planning is exemplary and her knowledge of how things work at SSU is exhaustive. As department chairs come and go, Ms. Teixeira remains the constant. She is the one with the institutional knowledge to keep key programs moving along smoothly. Ms. Teixeira is an excellent collaborator, attentive to the smallest of details. She is professional in all of her interactions. Ms. Teixeira works cooperatively with her colleagues and department chairs. She has taken on many new tasks this past year including: taking charge of a slide show for the multiple subject program credential ceremony, overseeing, with the department chair, the system for placing multiple subject candidates into student teaching positions, and orienting and assisting newly hired lecturers and faculty members. Ms. Teixeira provides assistance seamlessly and professionally. She also serves her community by volunteering as a reading tutor for young children through the Schools of Hope program, and also by facilitating monthly food drives. 8 MORNING CEREMONY School of Arts and Humanities American Multicultural Studies French Art Liberal Studies (Hutchins School) Art History Music Chicano and Latino Studies Organization Development Communication Studies Philosophy English Spanish Fine Arts Theatre Arts School of Business and Economics Business Administration Economics School of Education Early Childhood Studies Education #sonomastate9 Order of Ceremony / Morning Chair of the Faculty Richard Senghas presiding University Banner Bearer . . . . . . . . . . . It is the student’s time to be recognized officially, by public proclamation, that he or she has achieved rank with the company of scholars that has framed civilization over the centuries and throughout the world. Commencement rituals originated in Europe in the Middle Ages, when the church was the center of learning. The earliest colleges assumed some of the customs and styles of monasteries. For example, the scholar’s gown is an adaptation of the robe of the friar or priest, the hood is from the monk’s cowl, and the mortarboard cap came from the skullcap. Early American colleges followed many of these customs, some of which continue today as traditions in America. The Mace Symbolic since the Middle Ages of the community of scholars, the mace is carried in academic processions at colleges and universities. At Sonoma State University, the honor of service as bearer of the mace is accorded to the Chair of the Faculty. The Presidential Medallion The Presidential Medallion represents the authority and responsibility of the Office of the President of the University. Conferred upon the president by the chancellor of the California State University at the president’s inauguration, it is worn with academic dress on official occasions. Academic Regalia The gown is distinctive for each of the three degree levels. The bachelor’s gown is a yoked, closed-front garment with long, pointed sleeves. The master’s gown can be worn open or closed and has long, oblong sleeves, usually closed but slit below the shoulders. The doctoral gown has full, bell-shaped sleeves crossed with three velvet bars, and by velvet panels from neck to ankle; it is generally black. The mortarboard cap, in black, is the most accepted style of headdress in colleges and universities throughout the United States. The tassel, fastened to the center of the cap, indicates whether 18 or not the degree has been conferred. If the wearer has graduated, the tassel is worn on the left; if not, it is worn on the right. The tassel on the doctoral cap may be of gold thread. The hood, draped over the wearer’s shoulders and down the back, indicates the highest degree earned. The bachelor’s hood is seldom used. The doctoral hood differs from the bachelor’s and master’s in that it is longer and has flat wide panels on either side. The color and design of the silk lining of the hood indicate the college or university conferring the degree. The hood worn by SSU master’s degree candidates is lined in dark blue and light blue, the Sonoma State University colors. The master’s hood is trimmed in gold velvet for the master of science and white velvet for the master of arts. The color of the velvet border on the hood indicates the field of study in which a candidate has earned a degree. Among faculty, the most common degree is the doctor of philosophy, indicated by dark blue. University Seal The seal of the University appears on the mace and the medallion, on diplomas, and official documents. The soaring dove symbolizes peace or freedom of the spirit; the flaming torch represents the flame of learning; and the tree suggests the beauty and strength of the redwood which gives this region its name, the Redwood Empire. The Latin words lux mentis lux orbis mean “light of the mind, light of the world.” University and Academic School Banners The University’s heraldic banner, carried in the procession, displays the University’s colors: dark blue and light blue. The banners for the five academic schools incorporate colors representing each school’s disciplines and the colors traditionally used on the regalia hoods of the various disciplines. International Flags The flags displayed behind the Commencement platform each year represent the countries of international students who are graduating. This is a joint doctoral program between the Schools of Education at Sonoma State University and the University of California at Davis. Graduates will have their degrees conferred on June 13, 2015 at the University of California, Davis School of Education Ceremony. The candidates’ dissertation titles are below. Brian K.
