Mission Directory January, 2009 FOREWARD Cherry Hills has had a long history of being mission-minded. Part of that is reflected in the decision that was made many years ago to give 20% of every dollar given for operating expenses to missions. Even in some “low” years, the church and it’s leaders have never wavered from being faithful to that. All special offerings and specific designations to any of those missionaries or mission organizations for which we have a line item, are on top of that 20%. We believe God has kept His promise to “open the windows of heaven and pour out His blessing” because of trusting Him in this area. Sunday School Classes, small groups and individuals have frequently added support to those for which they have a particular burden. This can be done by noting this on your offering envelope or by giving directly to their mission agency or organization. The Missions Team is responsible for interviewing potential missionary partners and mission organizations and determining who we will support. The team is also responsible for recommending the proposed annual Mission budget to the church body. The team seeks to promote missions, near and far, meeting with the missionaries when they are “home” and inviting the church body to join us. It also responds to requests for scholarships for short-term mission trips, urges people to volunteer for mission projects locally or go on short term trips. The team prays for each of the missionaries and mission organizations and keeps up to date with what is happening in their work. This is not a small group of people. As the mission has enlarged, so has the number on the team. In recent years there have been between 15-20 individuals, who meet at least monthly to make any and all decisions related to the “Outside Far” and “Outside Near” vision of Cherry Hills. This past year, Outside Near began to move out on its own, under the direction of the Springfield Action Team, though many still serve on both. The pages that follow describe those missionaries and mission organizations with whom we are presently partnering. The proposed Mission Budget for the following year is presented at the November church business meeting. Any questions or proposed changes from the congregation are received then. The final budget is voted on at the Annual Business meeting of the church, and copies of that are always available in the church office or from a member of the Mission Team. 2 Table of Contents Cherry Hills Mission Team Page 4 Full-Time Missionaries We Support Ashworth, Steve & Rhonda Page 6 Baits, Gary & Mylinda Page 7 Benner, Armando & Karin Page 8 Bowman, Chris & Vicky Page 9 Carroll, Bill & Rachel Page 10 Coady, Craig & Darcy Page 11 Coats, John & Debbie Page 12 Coats, Scott & Tan Page 13 Cook, Robin & Teri Page 14 Culp, Jan Page 15 Dieselberg, Jeff & Annie Page 16 Elliott, Kevin & Jenny Page 17 Fowler, Craig & Allison Page 18 Gamwell, Tim & Debbie Page 19 Gilmer, Allen & Ginger Page 20 Graf, Bill & Sandi Page 21 Krell, Amy Page 22 Lieb, Lucy & Lieb, Nancy Page 23 Lipka, Larry & Ruth Page 24 Loera, Misael & Doris Page 25 Magruder, Todd & Gretchen Page 26 Mendez, Dr. Hugo & Ana Isabel Page 27 Mitchell, Ken & Mary Lynn Page 28 Nelsen, Scott & Cindy Page 29 Peplow, Brian & Cindy Page 30 Randall, Tom & Karen Page 31 Reese, Chad & Julie Page 32 Seward, Eric & Joy Page 33 Sheffield, Bob & Nancy Page 34 Solt-Ramirez, Lillian Page 35 Stensgard, Ray & Susan Page 36 Syverson, Greg & Vicki Page 37 Thompson, Tom & Valerie Page 38 Wallace, Matt Page 39 Wang, Jonah & Candy Page 40 Wright, Elaine Page 41 Yarrington, Larry & Susan Page 42 Retired Missionaries We Support Bergen, Gerald & Amy Bray, Vera Hayden, Wendell & Florence Ann McInroe, Dan & Joan Shishak, Tuisem & Margaret Page 44 Page 45 Page 46 Page 47 Page 48 Organizations, Institutions & Ministries Pages 49-55 American Baptist Board of International Ministries American Baptist Campus Ministries Area II Churches of the Great Rivers Region Bacone College Christian Student Fellowship Fellowship of Christian Athletes Gideons Great Rivers Region of the American Baptist Churches Kid’s Hope United Illinois Church Action on Alcohol & Addiction Juarez, Mexico Judson University Lake Springfield Baptist Camp Living Hope Counseling Center Love Packages Mission Promotions Northern Baptist Theological Seminary Short-Term Mission Trips Sister Church in England WLUJ & WIBI Christian Radio Stations Springfield Action Team Pages 55-59 Contact Ministries Feitshans Academy Mather Wells Neighborhood Association Salvation Army Washington Street Mission Beerlahai Roi Women’s Ministries Inner City Mission Birthday & Anniversary Dates 3 Pages 60-62 Cherry Hills Mission Team Randy Dempsay Kimberly Disney Harold Hayward Greg Heckel, Chair of Springfield Action Team Dr. Shaun Hill,Vice Chair John Janssen Don Kliment Mark Krell Pat Langhein, Secretary Dr. Eric Lohse Gary Nelsen, Chair Jerry Quick Remy Ramirez Marcy Rayot Dorcas Robinson Dr. John Rollet Sara Schwarberg James Wang 4 Full-Time Missionaries 5 Steve and Rhonda Ashworth John David, Sarah, Marie– Youth With A Mission Amsterdam, Holland Steve’s parents, Bob and Lucille Ashworth, moved here from California to retire, and when they did they became very active in our church family. Through this we were introduced to Steve, who was serving with YWAM, and later to Rhonda when they got married. As Steve would visit, he was asked to share his work and in 1993 we began supporting them as a church. Since then, his father has gone to be with the Lord, and his mother has moved to Carbondale to be closer to Steve’s sister. Steve serves on the leadership team of YWAM Amsterdam as the training director for the base. As a CPA, he also serves as the base's financial director and treasurer of two other organizations YWAM Amsterdam set up - one doing development work in Northern Iraq and more recently, an art café in the heart of Amsterdam. Steve is responsible for overseeing the training ministry and the operations team for the YWAM base in Amsterdam. Rhonda is highly involved in the daily growth and development of their three children, John David (July 4, 1996), Sarah (July 18, 1999) and Marie (May 27, 2002). Rhonda also has started a neighborhood women's prayer group and Bible study, as well as hosts many guests, particularly focusing on how the family can reach out to Muslim background people. The Great Rivers Region has also entered into a Sister relationship with the Baptists in Costa Rica, plus the Missionary Partnership Team for them is made up of people from Central Illinois, including Dr. John Rollet from our church. We began supporting their work in January 2006. The Baits’ work with the Costa Rican Baptist Convention in pastoral and lay leadership training and theological education. There is a crying need for committed, trained servant leaders for the churches. Recruiting, training, and encouraging leaders is how Mylinda and Gary spend their time and energy. This involves teaching courses at the Centro Teologico Bautista Metropolitano in the San Jose area, and making courses available at a number of local church locations. Courses include worship, preaching, Bible, pastoral counseling, ethics and theology. The Baitses also work with the Costa Rican leadership to recruit leaders, and have developed an annual “Call Retreat” for people in the churches to consider how God might be nudging them toward ministry and church leadership. Gary enjoys teaching preaching classes and encourages his students to take seriously the call to study Scripture and creatively communicate its transforming message. Mylinda has been able to use her artistic gifts and pastoral training to encourage worship that is biblical, rich in meaning, thoroughly Latin-American, and creative. For Gary and Mylinda, and their children it is an honor to work with their Costa Rican brothers and sisters. He is a native of Venezuela, South American, and also pastored an American Baptist church in California before going with YWAM as a missionary. In 1999, because of horrific storms in Venezuela, a large number of their supporting churches were unable to continue to support them, and we were asked if we would consider helping out. Armando oversees the following ministries. Foolish Things (youth ministry), The Cleft (street people, prostitutes and sexually broken people), an NGO working in Northen Iraq among the Kurds, church planting in three neighborhoods, sending outreach teams to various locations worldwide, overseeing a church-planting project in Brussels among Iranians from a refugee camp. They have opened a new café in downtown Amsterdam where artists meets and bands perform. They also have started a fellowship with musicians and hosting a seminar called art. They host DTS's (Discipleship Training Schools), IBC (Introduction to Biblical Counseling School)), ABCS (Addictive Behavior Counseling School), School of Urban Frontier Missions (Muslim Focus). Karin leads a ministry called Ethnos, and a multi-cultural team. The goal of Ethnos is to mobilize the ethnic churches of Amsterdam (180 nationalities represented) to the Great Commission and to put into motion church planting teams among the unreached nations represented in the city. She has been in full time ministry with her family for 22 years in Southeast Asia, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesian, Singapore, and now for the past 11½ years in China. Vicky and her husband Chris’ vision is to plant churches by changing one life at a time. They use health care and disaster relief to reach minorities, and at present also oversee an international church in Dalian, which was started in June 2006. Both Vicky and Chris help teach and train pastors and local leaders and provide Study Bibles and other teaching materials for local churches. In addition, they are providing prosthesis, plastic surgery, wheelchairs, etc., to street-kids, beggars and under privileged. Through these opportunities they have been able to pull these beggars from their devastated states into Prince-hood in Christ. Following the recent earthquake in Sichuan China, they have been serving in the heart of the quake areas and are assisting the local Believers with long term projects. Rachel began attending Cherry Hills while in Junior High, at the invitation of Julie Johnson, now Julie Hart. She was actually the first of the Heine family to come to Cherry Hills. She had made her decision for Christ and was baptized as a young child but didn't really attend a church. Rachel joined Cherry Hills by letter of transfer. Bill is from Chatham Christian Church, and he and Rachel met while attending Glenwood High School. Rachel has her B.A. from North Central College and Bill from Lincoln Christian College and Seminary. They both have been on the staff at Community Christian Church in Naperville, Illinois where Bill has been the Director of Creative Arts over 9 locations and Rachel has currently been the Production Director for Kids’ City Creative Arts but also started and directed their arts school. Bill and Rachel have dreamed for years of planting churches in France, where less than 1% would claim to be Christ-followers, as compared to 42% in America. It is a spiritually dark place where people think they have tried God and it didn't work for them. They try to fill this “God-shaped void” with lots of worldly pleasures and still feel empty. Christian Associates International (CAI) is a mission organization planting high-impact churches in the major cities of Europe. It was established in the 1960s and is active today in 16 European countries. Bill and Rachel plan to be on the field by the Summer of 2009. John is a Judge in Christian County and for years has led a small group from Cherry Hills which meets in Jerry and Lisa Quick’s home. They have now been attending Cherry Hills as well. When Craig and Darcy finished their studies at Wheaton College with an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, our Mission Team was introduced to them and were so impressed we felt called to partner with them. They left for the mission field in the Fall of 2007. Craig, Darcy, Hudson & Grace serve with PIONEERS International among the unreached Muslim peoples of East Asia. Currently, they live in a major Asian city learning language and reaching out to college students. Lord-willing, after language learning, they will move to a more rural city and plant churches in places without a single church or even one Christian. When they retired in 1997, we replaced them with John and Debbie. In 2003 our American Baptist Board of International Missions asked if we could consider “adopting” them on a more personal level – which we have done. Two of our young men, Jason Kincaid and Tim Seppelt visited their work in Cambodia over Christmas of 2003. In September 2004, our own Dr. Jim Davis and Dr. Scott Nelsen also served with them as part of a medical outreach to Cambodia. John and Debbie have worked for years to meet basic health and food needs in Cambodia, a country devastated in every way by years of war and the horrific rule of the Khmer Rouge regime. Debbie, a nurse practitioner, has worked to improve the clinical skills of local government nurses and train villagers in basic health care. John introduced simple well-drilling technology, and then worked with a small team of Cambodian farmers in training other farmers in growing fruits and vegetables, and raising fish in backyard ponds. However, in recent years, after the onset of outside false teaching into the church, both John and Debbie are increasingly involved in teaching scripture and discipling new Christians. The Coats' Cambodian coworkers, most of whom are now believers and are skilled in their work, now continue most of the humanitarian work. When they retired we shifted that support to their son and daughter-in-law, John and Debbie Coats. This past year our Missions Committee met with Scott and unanimously agreed to become part of their support team as well. Scott, like John, was raised in Thailand, and is more at home there, then here in the United States. But this makes him all the more valuable for the kingdom work. After helping to establish a local Thai Christian foundation called the Thai Concern Foundation, which has continued to work among Thai young people at risk to HIV/AIDS and amongst people suffering from HIV/AIDS, Scott led World Concern to Chiang Rai in the late 1990s to focus on developing the capacity of local minority Christians to carry out their own ministries. Today, World Concern has allowed the ministries that are being carried out in Chiang Rai to become firmly established under a new foundation called the Mekong Minority Foundation. As of June 30, 2005, World Concern officially handed over the operation of the ministries to this local foundation. Scott and Tan have now joined the Mekong Minority Foundation, and continue to work to strengthen and support the ministries of local minority people in the Chiang Rai area as well as in the nearby areas of eastern Shan State of Myanmar (Burma), northern Laos, and southern China. He actually started going overseas while still in college. We began to support him in 1977. In 1980 he and Teri headed to Sri Lanka as a coach to the 3 national teams - men, women, and boys under the age of 19. In May 1983 they were sent to the Philippines where they worked closely with another one of “our” missionaries, Tom and Karen Randall. They were there until May 1988 when they decided their son Andrew's needs could not be met overseas and moved to California where the OC headquarters was located. Soon OC appointed him Director of SA. As administrator of SA, Robin recruits athletes (60 to 100) each summer to assist SA staff in Taiwan, Philippines, Argentina, and Guatemala. As a member of the Int'l Sports Ministry Assoc. he has many others desiring sports ministry teams so they send teams to help them reach their communities in Asia, Europe, Africa and Latin America. Many churches and colleges are interested in sending their sports-teams so they are in a position to work with them as the SA network is international. They have ministered in 67 countries helping the national church use sports to draw crowds and preach the Gospel to draw individuals to Christ. The SA staff is also helping the local church to develop their own sports ministries. Soon after that she began to attend our services and made her public commitment to Christ in our church and became a member. It was obvious that she was serious about her faith and rapidly began to grow as a Christ-follower. In 1989 she accepted another banking position in Ohio, where she has worked since leaving here. Over these years she has kept in touch, including visiting our services when back visiting family in central Illinois. In 2007 she had the opportunity to fulfill a long time dream and serve as a missionary seeking to reach Muslims for Christ, which meant a move to the Phoenix area. Jan’s role at Frontiers is to help in the massive recruiting of 50 teams over the next 5 years to go to 1/3rd of the identified “unengaged” Muslim people groups with populations over 100,000, where no Christian missionaries are working. Her first responsibility will be to identify the “profile” of those most likely to become successful team leaders in remote (and often dangerous) places. She will also be looking at how these successful leaders seek out mission agencies, what kinds of information they want from Frontiers and how Frontiers is perceived by their major constituencies— those called to serve, senior pastors and mission pastors, as well as donors and potential donors. We knew when they came that serving overseas was their passion and their dreams. So it was natural when they answered the call to serve in Thailand in 1994 that we should begin supporting them. Annie is the founder and CEO of NightLight Design Co. Ltd, a Business as Mission enterprise with offers holistic care to women leaving prostitution or those at risk of sexual exploitation. NightLight's outreach team visits the women in the red light districts and offers them an alternative employment through the jewelry business at NightLight. NightLight Ministry, the non-profit arm offers holistic care through lifeskills training, prayer counseling, and spiritual discipleship. Jeff works alongside Annie and the team in this ministry as Bible teacher for several different classes throughout the week and is the Senior Pastor for NightLight church and cell group (called "Song Sawang, which means "Send the Light Church"). Jeff also teaches Urban Ministry in three different seminaries in Bangkok with a team of adjunct faculty. NightLight has helped over 100 women since it began in 2005. 75 women are currently employed at NightLight. Jenny worked for FCA for about 2 years from 19982000. Kevin, who has been a member of Cherry Hills before FCA came to this area, came on board beginning in 2000. Through our support of the West Central Illinois office of FCA we do support their ministry. The goal of FCA is to present to athletes and coaches the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church. This is best accomplished through building relationship with coaches and ministering to them and to the athletes whom they coach. A big part of Kevin’s work is to promote Camps, set up Huddle Ministry (student-led groups in the schools), lead coaches Bible studies and make personal visits to coaches, their practices and their games. Since FCA is faith-funded he also has the task of raising financial support and allowing others to be blessed through the avenue of supporting the ministry. These, among many others, would be the main ways that we try and impact the world for Christ through Sports. In essence, Kevin is considered "a coach to the coaches." They started attending Cherry Hills soon after that in the fall of 1996 when they began working as the Camp Managers at Lake Springfield Baptist Camp. During this time Allison also got her nursing degree so they would be better prepared for the mission field. They were here until moving to Tennessee in August of 1999 for Craig to go to seminary and prepare to serve overseas. While here, Craig and Greg Syverson taught the 11th and 12th grade Sunday School class for much of that time. They were also involved in the Young Adult Sunday School Class. Three of the couples in the class have gone to the mission fieldare either on the mission field or will be. Craig and Allison have answered the call to work among the Gumuz people, one of 70 ethnic groups in Ethiopia. They are subsistence farmers and herders with strong family ties. Their religion is tribal animism and they have little contact with the outside world. CMF missionaries have established eight churches with nearly 2000 members among these people south of the Blue Nile River, but there is only one small struggling church, separated by distance and natural barriers from the other churches, north of the Blue Nile. In January of 2006 the Lord led them to choose a site near a large Gumuz village called Mazambis with no health care and no knowledge of the Gospel, where the people wanted them so badly they cut a road (sort of) for them to get there. This is where Craig and Allison are establishing their home. Allison will be heading up a community health clinic, and Craig will be doing evangelism and church leadership training. From then on he has helped extensively to expand our ministry there in Juarez. A year or so later they came to Cherry Hills and met with a number of our people, including our Mission Committee. There was an immediate bond which developed. In 2005 the Mission Committee made a commitment to support their work with Life Challenge International. Tim began his vocational career in sales and construction, but soon found himself working in youth ministry, first as a youth pastor, then as Director of J.O.E.L Ministry, then as Director of World Challenge Southwest, and then as Director of Life Challenge in 1997, all the while serving as an Associate Pastor in El Paso. This ministry has brought ministry to troubled youth, homeless, orphanages, rehabilitation of those dealing with addictions, construction of homes for the poor, distribution center of medical supplies, school equipment, blankets, food, etc. All of these ministries have opened wide doors for evangelism and discipleship, as well as opened doors for short term mission teams to come and experience the desperate needs in Mexico, particularly in the greater Juarez area. Our Mission Team agreed to add our support to the Gilmers beginning in July of 2005 because of the critical need for a second doctor in the clinic and training center founded by the Nelsens. Allan and Ginger are both graduates of Auburn University, and during that time both served on short term mission teams (Allan actually in the Philippines). Allan began work as an electrical engineer and was doing very well. Ginger is a licensed elementary teacher who currently home schools both their children. But after six years God stirred their hearts to become missionaries overseas. At that same time, Allan became interested in medicine, particularly as a way to open the door to share the Gospel. He completed his seven years of medical school and residency in June 2005 and they arrived on the field at the end of July having raised their full support. Allan enjoys teaching as well as practicing medicine and so will fit very well with the work of preparing nationals who are going to unreached people groups with health care skills. Ginger plans to assist with patient care in the clinic. Emily and Will are attending Faith Academy. Most of that time our church has been part of their support team through our connections with BGFM here in Springfield. Sandy has had both hips replaced multiple times and two years ago they had to remove one of the hip joints completely, forcing them to come home. They are presently serving as representatives for the mission in the Western United States, including Texas, as well as reaching out to those who speak Portuguese in our country. They are visiting colleges, churches, camps etc. challenging young people with world missions and the opportunities in Brazil. They expanded their horizons and work when they were accepted in December, 2005, as Associate Members at Rio Grande Bible Institute, Edinburg, Texas (on loan from BGFM), which meant adding Spanish to their Portuguese. Bill also has a ministry to truckers at a nearby truck stop. Brazil Gospel Fellowship Mission Address: 125 W. Our own Wayne and Pat Langhein, learned about her at Wycliffe’s annual banquet this past summer, and met her parents who still live here. Our Missions Committee was interested in being a part of the work of Wycliffe and felt led to help her complete her support, knowing too she would be close and be able to give us updates when she is home on furlough. Amy based in Sudan, and her current role is Language Programs Manager. As the title suggests, it is primarily an administrative position. A language program involves more than just translating the Bible. It also involves linguistic analysis, literacy, and Scripture use. Translation is only one part of the overall task of making sure people can use the produced Scriptures and benefit from them. She seeks to help the Sudanese language teams through budgeting of the donated money, helping them to stay on track with their plans for the year, and helping with other practical details. Part of her job is making sure that the teams accurately report what they have done and how they have used the funds. She also helps to coordinate workshops for the teams in order for them to receive further training in translation, linguistics, literacy, etc. So, basically, her function there is to assist the language teams and all the language program workers (both nationals and expatriates) to effectively carry out their work. She enjoys being a part of the “big picture” of the language work and thanks the Lord for allowing her to be involved in what He is doing in the world to spread the good news! We wanted to try a different approach and instead of taking a family from the United States and planting them as missionaries in Juarez we wanted to give a national, who had a passion for missions a chance to serve with us. We wanted someone who was local and already knew the people, customs, bilingual; we preferred someone who was seminary trained and then we could provide them with support for ministry. When we explained to Dr. Mendez what we were thinking; he liked the idea and gave us several possibilities of individuals who might fit the profile. One of them was Misael Loera. Misael is a bivocational, serving a church as a pastor and working for Amigos en Cristo (AeC). His responsibilities for AeC includes, overseeing the ministry center of AeC in Anapra and partnering with Life Challenge International (Tim Gamwell) overseeing some of the ministries in the Las Tapias at their community center. These ministries include Bible studies, educational classes, discipleship, & shepherding of the local people. Misael is also responsible for working with the teams that come to Juarez with AeC. This includes any preliminary set up for ministry and any follow up that would be required. Misael has also been sharing about the ministry and the work that is being done on a Christian TV station in El Paso. Misael and his wife Doris have two daughters, Anita, & DJ, and an adopted son Edgar. Doris is a medical doctor and oversees the medical clinic that AeC has opened. Since then several of our college-age students have been blessed by their on-campus ministry. Floyd Disney, who is a part of our Cherry Hills family, is also a faculty advisor for the group. Their purpose is to point college students on both campuses to Jesus Christ, and equip them to become fully transformed disciples. They seek to accomplish this through campus evangelism, small group Bible studies, mission trips, service projects, and a Friday night large-group meeting called The Edge. These Friday night meetings, where church groups take turns providing a free meal, have been well attended with 75 students each week. Each year the staff of CSF select 5-15 student leaders who receive weekly leadership training and gain practical experience leading Bible studies, overseeing mission trips, leading worship, preaching, organizing outreach and follow-up of students, and discipling others. Each of these leaders, in turn, invests in at least one other student during the school year, encouraging, discipling, and training them in ministry. CSF is a non-denominational campus ministry, and is affiliated with the National Association of Christian Campus Ministries. Our own Floyd Disney serves on the Board of Christian Student Fellowship out at LLCC and UIS. Dr Mendez was invited to participate, and did so with stamina, gusto, and tenderness. He spent long days in very hot, dusty conditions, giving loving care to hundreds of grateful patients at no cost. We were blessed by his calm and peaceful demeanor in a somewhat chaotic environment. Through translators our short-term leaders to Juarez got to know Dr. Mendez, along with his wife Ana Isabel and son Hugo, who frequently accompanied and aided him in his work. They learned of their commitment to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ through various ministries. They also discovered that Dr. Mendez provided free medical care and medications at numerous locations, working with local churches, orphanages, and others. Through many conversations and subsequent mission trips they came to deeply appreciate Dr. Mendez and his family. With power and perseverance that are possible only through Christ, their actions demonstrate true love – love in action. Dr. Mendez has also been a key piece of our medical teams being able to continue to serve there in Juarez. They pastored the Fairview Baptist Church here in Springfield for three years in the mid-eighties. In March 1999 Ken left his position with the state and Mary Lynn her position with the Pre-School Ministry at Central Baptist to become Executive Director and Associate Director of Washington Street Mission. The Mission was already in our church budget, but now we have an even more personal reason to be heavily involved. Ken and Mary Lynn direct and oversee all of the activities of the Mission, plan for the enhancement and expansion of the Mission's ministries, and work with the Board to envision new directions for future ministries. They focus on the ministries to children and youth, directing the Bible studies and after-school tutoring times, preparing meals and organizing the camping trips and other outings. They recruit, train, and oversee staff and the army of volunteers that serve at the Mission, including many from Cherry Hills. They also serve coffee to homeless people in the neighborhood coffee hour, sort donated clothing and other items, help select men for entrance into the Transition House, which opened in November 2002 to support men who are moving away from life on the streets, track finances and donations, handle the paperwork, build partnerships with churches and community agencies, and take a part in everything else that needs doing. Scott is the son of Pastor Gary and Janie Nelsen. When Scott and Cindy met at Cherry Hills they were both committed to becoming missionaries. In January of 1993 they sought the support of friends and family as they founded Mustard Seed Ministries and Cherry Hills began to support them. A few weeks after Scott’s completion of his Family Practice Residency in June of 1993 they were commissioned by our church and left to begin their work in the Philippines. They provide free healthcare to the squatters and poor that have flooded the city of Manila as a means of sharing Jesus Christ with them and serving them in Christ’s name. Mustard Seed, through its Filipino partner board Assist International, has built a clinic in a neighborhood with tens of thousands of poor who have no means to receive medical care. But since they can only reach a very small percentage of all the people, this clinic is also a training center for those who have been trained theologically and have felt called to go to unreached people groups in Asia. Providing basic health-care has become a practical way to open the door and express the love of Christ for these people. They have also sought to help the people have better nutrition and food supply through a continuously expanding ag project near the clinic. Cindy also works with a group of young girls in their neighborhood, teaching them both the Bible and the practical things of being a Christian woman. Scott and Cindy are eagerly looking forward to Tom and Val Thompson from Cherry Hills joining them in the summer of 2008. Mustard Seed Ministries Int’l Field Address: P.O. Brian was a youth during that time and they attended Cherry Hills, so it was natural when he and Cindy felt called of God to follow in his father’s footsteps, for Cherry Hills to become part of their support team. We began that in 1988. They are involved in their local church ministry working under the direction of a Brazilian Pastor. Brian heads up evangelistic late night Bible studies, which has been especially effective with men from the upper class. Several lawyers, doctors and other business men have come to know the Lord. These studies usually start a 8 or 9 p.m. and go past mid-night. They have also had a ministry in one of the large slums in Fortaleza. Reaching the slum kids and families is a big challenge and God has given them a measure of success. Brian also teaches at the seminary there in Fortaleza. After sharing about their ministry in the Philippines with Cherry Hills, our church began it’s partnership with them in1988. About 1998 they had to return to the states because Tom’s health had deteriorated badly. But that doesn’t mean they no longer are in ministry. In the first 18 years of ministry Tom led basketball teams recruited from the United States and Australia to challenge local teams on dozens of islands (basketball is the national sport in the Philippines), and at half-time entertaining the crowds riding on his unicycle, as well as giving his testimony and having the team members give theirs. After this they invited people to examine the claims of Christ, giving them a simple Bible study to do and giving the local pastors the names of those who accepted that invitation and completed the Bible study. Many people were won to Christ. Since having to come home, Tom has continued taking some teams, but putting more emphasis on supporting ministry to orphans and establishing a Christian sports camp used for evangelism. 10 to 20 thousand kids come through the camp each year. They also have a ministry here in this country. Tom is the Chaplain for the Champions Tour (formerly the Senior Pro Golfers Association), speaking weekly at the fellowship meeting and doing extensive counseling with the golfers and their families, leading many of them to the Lord. They have seen the attendance at the Friday night chapel go from just a few to over 80. He also speaks extensively around the USA in churches, schools, conferences, etc. World Harvest Ministries Home Address: 2105 Cedar Pointe Lane Edmond, OK 73003 Phone: 405-340-1565 Email: [email protected] Mission Address: P.O. Chad is deeply grateful to Pastor Pat and also Dave Borden, his small group leader, for their investment in his life. Chad is a recent graduate of Dallas Theological Seminary and is also serving as the Associate/Youth Pastor at Community Bible Church in Irving. Chad and Julie have felt a strong call to go to Spain, where evangelical believers make up less than 1% of the population. They will be placed in a local church to serve as catalysts for effective ministry so that church will be able to plant healthy churches. Chad will also work in the area of theological education for a distancelearning Bible School which is part of the Evangelical Federation of churches in Spain. Thirdly, they both have a passion for sharing the gospel with the spiritually needy and are excited to take this passion to Madrid. Chad and Julie will be going out under WorldVenture, which formerly was known as the Conservative Baptist Foreign Mission Society, and now is a community of more than 500 missionaries working in more than 60 countries around the globe. Eric actually grew up just across Outer Park Drive from our church, but attended another church. Our Missions Committee felt we needed someone reaching out to the thousands of international students coming to this country and so we responded to Eric and Joy’s quest for support. Their call to serve in this manner all began about 1995 when they hosted two Japanese families at the U of I. That was followed by various mission trips that were eye-opening to the spiritual needs of the people around the world. Though at first they thought God was calling them to go overseas, they realized he wanted them right here. Students from 170 nations come to the universities of America. The U of I has over 4,000 international students. The harvest is near. Their work includes locating internationals on campus, assisting them with their particular needs, befriending them, helping them with the cultural and language differences, having Bible study and group discussions, locating volunteers who will befriend an international. Eric is the principle worker on campus. Joy helps with hosting of dinners and studies in their home. At times she helps with the moms and their children. They were introduced to us by Dennis and Shelley Kennedy and former member Bob Cook. They have been on staff with the Navigators since September of 1966. In that time they have served in numerous roles from Campus directors to Vice President of the US Navigators. From 1992 to 1999, Bob served as the country leader for the Navigator ministry to Russia, called Co-Mission, where several parachurch groups joined together to go through the open door presented to Christians following the fall of the Iron Curtain. Currently he serves in the Public relations and development department out of the national office in Colorado Springs. He relates to our key constituents around the country ministering to them individually as well as speaking at conferences. He also leads vision trips to overseas locations to help broaden the outlook for missions of those on the trip. She also has worked closely with the Baptist Churches in Costa Rica which our American Baptist family relates to. So after visiting Cherry Hills in 1994, we quite naturally became part of her support team the following year. Lillian is a nurse and has been the general coordinator of a clinic in San Jose called CEDCAS, which our men have helped to build and now has three stories, 14 specialists and two operating rooms. She also has been a liason between the churches and has worked with them to help them find ways to evangelize more creatively among the rural churches. One of those ways has been through providing a cow, or baby chickens, or pigs, to very poor families to help in the nutritional status as well as hear the Gospel. That church turned out to be Cherry Hills and they began attending each time they were in Springfield. When they went to Belgium in January of 1981 the church entered into partnership with them. Ray and Susan do church planting in French speaking Belgium. Ray’s first church plant was in the east of Belgium when he was single. Together Ray & Susan finished another in 97. These past 11 years, they have been working in a handful of churches at a time, helping struggling churches to grow and become stable as well as participating in a couple of new church plants. By tangible measures, successfully planting a church in Belgium means having 75 committed adults, a paid pastor, and a building---all three of which are rare in Belgium. They spend most of their time mentoring/training leaders and working along-side them to establish ministries in various churches. Susan has turned over responsibility for an international women's evangelistic and discipleship Bible study ministry (about 75 women representing 15-20 different nationalities), giving her more time for evangelism, discipling and counseling in French. Ray is involved in getting men's ministries started in Belgium, doing inter-church breakfast workshops, leading men’s ministries in a couple of churches, and helping churches get a vision for men’s ministry. Ray also has a dozen adolescent boys in evangelistic, discipleship and social/fun activities. Both do counseling in the Christian community across, are a part of the evangelism program in their current church assignment, and are developing a discipleship program in the church as well. Greg met Vicki at Judson College, where they not only fell in love, but discovered they both had a passion for missions. They felt led to serve Christ among the poor in Mexico, where they have now been since 2001. In March of 2002 Greg and Vicki moved to Pachuca, Hidalgo, Mexico to begin their ministry. In 2003 construction for a community outreach center began in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Pachuca. In 2004 they moved into a missionary apartment that is part of the community center (CLAVE). Since then they have been working in various way to reach out to the community around them. God has put in their hearts a passion and vision to see this impoverished community transformed by the love and power of Jesus Christ. The following is a partial list of the ministries and services of the Community Center: Children and Youth Homework; English & literacy classes; Health Services; Family Counseling; Food and Clothing donation & distribution; Vocational training; Youth & children’s outreach activities; Alcohol abuse counseling; Women’s selfdefense and exercise classes. Since arriving in Mexico they have also been working with a cell church in Pachuca. They are eager to take the next step in their ministry, and that is to plant a church in the community, which they are hoping to by 2009. Matt was not only the leader of their worship team, but very much a leader for their entire ministry. He is from Rochester and a member of the Rochester Christian Church. We met with Matt and were quickly impressed with the depth of his commitment to Christ and to missions. We first helped him go as an intern with NMSI to Russia, then in 2006 he married Heather who he met at Christian Student Fellowship and in March 2008 they went together to Myanmar. There in Myanmar they will split their time between two immediate tasks. First, they will work with a native Burmese speaker to learn the language. This will be their most important responsibility over the next two years. Second, (and this is their way to get a visa) they will be teaching English to adults at a school in Yangon. This will give them many opportunities to meet and develop relationships with Burmese nationals, which is their target group. Their long term vision for Myanmar is that the Burmese would recognize Jesus Christ as their Lord. They believe these people are near to opening up to the Good News. The burns were so severe he was unable to lift up his head. By God’s mercy, a Christian family found him and connected him to a plastic surgeon from the U.S., who performed surgery on Jonah’s burns. The operations not only gave back Jonah’s normal life but also opened his eyes to know that God has a special purpose for him. He experienced true love and accepted God as his personal Savior. His heart was changed and he now knows that God wants to use his experience to save other unfortunates. As the Bible say, the old has gone and the new has come. God has provided language gifts to Jonah. Despite his limited educational background, he taught himself English and after three years was speaking English fluently. God also gave him leadership gifts and he now running several fellowship programs, reaching “unfortunates,” developing future “Timothy’s, and doing student counseling in the University. Springfield, Illinois Larry has his PhD in Physics and had a full career in academia and the electronics industry before being called to be the Illinois Director of Prison Fellowship in 1991. He followed Rev. Bill Keep in this position, who joined our church staff parttime after leaving Prison Fellowship. We were introduced to Larry very quickly and his work, not only promoting Prison Ministry to prisoners, ex-prisoners and their families, but Angel Tree which brings hope and the peace of Jesus Christ to the children of inmates at Christmas time. Larry resigned from Prison Fellowship in July 2003, but in retirement is continuing to bring hope to men in prison through training in life skills and life planning from a Biblical model. The recidivism rate for prisoners is 67%, which is partly due to the lack of moral foundation and in part to the fact that the state puts these people on the street with a pair of clothes, $10 and a bus ticket to their home town. Larry seeks to give them some planning skills and show them how to network with people who can help them, based on biblical principles. This is part of an overall ministry to people called Life Coaching through a not for profit business with his wife, Susan, who is a counselor, and heads up the Living Hope Counseling center here in Springfield (which we also help support). Susan has been a great blessing to many from Cherry Hills who our staff have referred to her . Susan and Larry have 2 children and 3 grandchildren. She graduated from Wheaton and answered the call of God to serve Him in Peru. In 1953, South Seventh Street Baptist Church began sending her $25.00 a month support. Vera went to Peru in 1951. After a year of language study she lived along the Ucayali River with a group of Shipibo Indians. She taught 1st grade in the Mission School for them and did that for 15 years. It was here where she saw the most decisions for Christ. After this the government took over the schooling. So she served as administrator in two of the Mission bookstores until 1989. During this time she was also free to do visitation, help with women’s meetings and usually taught a a Sunday School Class. Vera retired from the mission in 1989 and came home to take care of her stepmom and did that until her step-mom went to be with the Lord. In 1995 she had the rare privilege of going back to serve in Peru and did that for three years. She is now living in a retirement home for missionaries in Bradenton, Florida. We have continued our support because of her very limited income. We became aware that they were in need of further financial support and added to them to our mission roster. They have had to take “early” retirement because of Wendell’s severe diabetic condition, and are living in the Kansas City area now. Their ministry was mainly in the capital city of Fortaleza. Wendell taught in the SIBIMA Seminary and also was a visiting professor at the Antioch Bible Institute interior. They were also involved in neighborhood Bible studies. The church they ministered in for many years now has a Brazilian Pastor. Florence taught in BGFM’s Priscila School. That is a special program for training women concerning being a mother, wife, teacher, etc. They also have held special services in many churches with Brazilian Pastors, seeking to be an encouragement to the pastor and congregation. In 2005 they were able to return to Brazil for several weeks to renew friendships and speak in the churches and at conferences. Presently they are leading a Good News Club in a near-by school and reaching out to those who speak Portuguese in the greater Kansas City area. They were very active in the old South Seventh Street Baptist Church (which became Cherry Hills when the church relocated in 1962). In 1961 they left Springfield YFC and joined New Tribes Mission. The church began supporting them the following year. They have served on the Training Staff for the Florida Boot Camp for New Tribes, the Language Institute Staff in Camdenton, Missouri, and finally in Brazil from 1973 until 2001. In 2001 they continued to serve, but this time at New Tribes headquarters in Sanford, Florida. They live at the “Retirement Homes” near the headquarters, where both served in important roles until recently when health problems limited their work to volunteering. He was also best man in their wedding. Margaret is an American citizen, who Tuisem met while working on his doctoral degree in this country. After speaking at Cherry Hills two or three times, we became part of their support team in 1999. Tuisem founded the Patkai Christian College in Nagaland in 1974, the first Christian liberal arts school in that country. They began with 20 students and 4 teachers, and now have over 1600 students. The school has earned a record for students ranking very high in exam results for the whole country. In 1984 he established the Patkai Elementary School to meet the educational needs of the faculty and staff children. In 2001 he founded Patkai Christian Academy in Manipur State which is near where he grew up and it also is rapidly growing. The purpose for all three of these schools is to provide quality education to the tribals and non-tribal poor within a Christian environment and to prepare young people for leadership in the church and in society at large. Tuisem retired as President of Patkai Christian College, and now is the Principal Emeritus. He continues to work on developing Patkai Christian Academy into a full-fledged Grade School and High School, as well as speak all over Nagaland and write articles for periodicals. Over 20 teams, adding up to over 400 person/trips, have since gone: some to build, some to hold medical clinics, some to do evangelism, some to work with orphans. For more information about our Springfield Action Team ministry partners or current service opportunities, visit the Cherry Hills website at www.cherryhillsfamily.org. You can also e-mail [email protected] or call the office at 546-4818. Spotlight Ministry Partners. The Springfield Action Team is focusing on the following five ministries during 2008. A majority of volunteer opportunities are within these ministries. Contact Ministries This ministry at 11th and Adams was established in 1978 by five Sprinfield churches and has established itself as an agency committed to providing assistance to those in need. The agency directs an extensive referral system that links the disadvantaged with other human service agencies. In addition to their referral system, Contact Ministries directly provides food, clothing, and other assistance. A medical clinic is also available 2 days a week. Contact Ministries also operates an emergency shelter for homeless women with children, providing all of life’s basic needs and offering counseling to help them get back on their feet. Several Cherry Hills members are on the board of directors including Jennifer Isringhausen and Therese Romanelli who help coordinate our service to the ministry. 56 Feitshans Academy In 2004 when Remy Ramirez learned that this K-5 school had many children without basic needs of socks, underwear, coats, etc., God opened the door for Cherry Hills to adopt this elementary school. Since then, our church has built a personal relationship with the staff through prayer breakfasts, individual encouragement, and providing much needed clothing and school supplies for the children. Many individuals also mentor children during the school year. Mather Wells Neighborhood Association In the mid to late 90’s Cherry Hills adopted a block in the Mather Wells Neighborhood through Springfield Project. The philosophy was to come alongside the neighbors and help them do what the neighborhoods saw needed to be done to make their neighborhood safer, beautiful and well-cared for. Over the years, we have been able to see the transformation in the neighborhood. Volunteers have also had the opportunity to develop lasting relationships with some of the residents. While no longer affiliated with the Springfield Project, Jon and Rachel Ommen have continued Cherry Hills’ involvement with the neighborhood. With the help of the neighborhood association, Cherry Hills is hoping to expand our impact beyond the original area. Salvation Army We’ve all heard of the Salvation Army, but they do a lot more than ring bells and run thrift stores. They also provide food, clothing, job placement, youth programs and Bible study programs for adults and youth. Cherry Hills is most involved with their shelter at 6th and Carpenter. A team led by Marcy Rayot takes a complete meal prepared by Lana Benedict and serves it at the Salvation Army to the homeless who are being sheltered there at the time, which means up to 45 people. Volunteers from Cherry Hills have also helped with some remodeling in the shelter. 57 Washington Street Mission This mission, which is located at 408 N. 4th in Springfield, was founded following a Billy Sunday Revival here in Springfield in 1910 and is directed by Cherry Hills own Ken and Mary Lynn Mitchell. Among its many ministries is a day-shelter for the homeless with free coffee and doughtnuts, a free clothing shop, after-school tutoring twice a week for elementary students (includes dinner and Bible study), youth groups for Junior and Senior High youth, women’s Bible study and fellowship, and a transition house for men who are on in recovery and getting back to working.
