38th Annual Garden Tour
QuarterlySpr08.qxd 2/15/08 4:53 PM Page 47 es, including New Zealand Flax, Little Becca Flax Lily, Lilac Beauty Lily Turf, Silver dragon Lily Turf, Dwarfed Lily of the Nile, and Mondo Grass span the front garden for the home of Jaydene Davis at 537 Grand Avenue. White impatiens border the front of the garden designed to allow filtered privacy, yet still inviting access to the wide front porch. The north and south ends of the porch open to small private gardens: the south garden contains azaleas and alyssum spilling over stepping stones leading to a raised deck for viewing the stars, with the south end opening to a fern grotto with stepping stones accessing an outside deck designed for entertaining. Gretchen and Victor Robinette are the proud owners of the home at 921 Indiana Avenue. There were a few aspects that the owners strove for in their garden that were quite important to them. These are seclusion, a piece of Asia - which they came to love while living in Malaysia and a garden to delight the senses. The garden is three and onehalf years old. In designing this current garden the owners wanted a retreat from city life and privacy from the townhouses at the west side of their property. The garden features a variety of bamboo that rings the property. This provides a cool retreat in the summer as well as privacy throughout the year. All of the roses in the garden are highly scented as are the Asian lilies, gingers, Pikake and Stephanotis. The Redwood deck at the back of the house is where the Robinettes spend many hours with family and friends. The deck and garden are the center of their lives at home. The garden is maintained and “updated” by the owner, Gretchen Robinette. In addition to the Garden Tour, South Pasadena Beautiful holds an annual meeting in June. The keynote speaker for the 2008 annual meeting will be Alexander Robinson, the author of a new book on green architecture in buildings and landscape. The meeting is open to the public, and will be held on Monday, June 16 at 6:30 p.m. at the South Pasadena Library Community Room.
