The Seed Pod April • May • June 2016 5 BIOGRAPHIES – 2016 AHS CANDIDATES PRESIDENT Joanna Schimek Eight years ago I ‘officially’ joined the American Hibiscus Association. My love of Hibiscus really became a passion about 10 years ago and it began as a way to spend leisure time with my husband, Ottmar, although I readily admit when we first started he did most of the work and I would just sit back and enjoy the beautiful flowers. I quickly realized that my casual interest in Hibiscus ‘blossomed’ into a near obsession. I just kept buying more pretty flowers for him to take care of and, eventually it became a job for me as well. This coming June, I will retire after 39 years of teaching elementary children. This ‘shifting of gears’ will give me many more hours to devote to caring for our plants and more time to devote to my job with AHS. We have both so enjoyed competing in the Space City, Lone Star, and have even traveled to Louisiana Hibiscus shows. I have served at the National level as your 2nd Vice President and also as your 1st Vice President. As 1st Vice President I have transferred all judging records to a flash drive that can be handed to the newly elected 1st VP as well as paper records of the same. I have served as President of Classroom Teachers Association in Anahuac, Delta Kappa Gamma, a women’s educators sorority, and serve on the board, as Outreach Chairman, of our church. I would be honored to serve you again at the National level, as President of the AHS. Damon Veach President of the Red Stick Hibiscus Association in Louisiana and a former president of the AHS. He has been involved with the national 6 SECOND VICE PRESIDENT Fred Roush society since the early 1980’s when he found a brochure about the organization at the Fairchild Gardens in Florida. Since that time, he has been active in all phases of hibiscus cultivation and distribution, hybridizing, judging, and organizing shows and sales. It would be an honor to serve in this office again. Outstanding in all aspects of Hibiscus Society business, qualifies this amazing, confident, resourceful, modest and handsome individual to bring to the office of Second Vice President of professional management tempered with compassion. FIRST VICE PRESIDENT SECRETARY Deb Spencer Krista Mathews Senior Auditor for an oil and gas company in Houston, TX. Past President of the Lone Star Chapter, past 2nd Vice President of AHS (2009-2011) during which time I revised a portion of the By-Laws that needed clarification. Senior Judge, Open Collector exhibitor, AHS member for 9 years. Goals are to develop ways to interest young people in growing hibiscus, promote outreach programs for youth, develop ways to attract new members and keep current members interested and active. Carolyn Comier-Stoute I have been involved with the Mike Bernard Acadiana Chapter for about 15 years and the Red Stick Chapter since inception (about 12 years). I have been an active member and an officer with both chapters over the years. I have also been involved at the national level for over eight years attending conventions and fall meetings. I have also served as Director for the last four years, with two of them as Chairman of the Board. If elected, I look forward to continuing to serve members both nationally and locally with our obsession of this great flower as Vice President with the bylaws as our guidance tool. The Seed Pod Member of the Central Florida Chapter for 10 years. Senior Judge, Show Director and served as National Secretary for 2 years. DIRECTORS Todd Alvis I was dragged kicking and screaming into the world of hibiscus 5 years ago by my wife Janelle. She wanted a hobby that we enjoy together. Hibiscus kept me home much more than my previous part time of off shore fishing. We have three children and have introduced them to hibiscus too. My 10-year-old son Ian has assisted me in building 3 greenhouses and has even grown his own cuttings. My 14-year-old daughter Avery enjoys walking around the greenhouse with me. My 19-year-old daughter Kendall had to stand up in a class in college and say what was special about her and she told everyone she had a Hibiscus that was named after her. We have been focusing on Hybridizing and enjoy naming our seedlings. This has been a fun hobby and we look forward to our get togethers with our many hibiscus friends. I now have friends all over the world because of this flower. What a great pastime! Don Bernard Member of the Conrad-Sunrise Chapter in West Palm Beach since 1984. Served as Chapter April • May • June 2016 Secretary for many years. Plan and present many Chapter programs. An exhibitor at shows. Judge since 2010. Currently Director of the Seed Bank. Avid gardener of tropical plants and a longtime member of the Friends of the Mounds Botanical Gardens in West Palm Beach. Connie Roush I fell in love with hibiscus in June of 2000, when I attended my first show in Largo FL. The show hooked me good! I retired from Lockheed Martin that year after 28 years as a Quality Control Inspector and started growing hibiscus. I have been lucky enough to attend every convention and membership meeting since that time. As a Director, I will be able to not only listen but talk. Cindy Wilson Cindy Wilson has been a member of the American Hibiscus Society for four years and a judge for two years. She is currently Secretary of the Lone Star Chapter and also served as 2nd Vice President in charge of programs. She is the proud mom of four children and resides in Cypress, Texas. She has been active in many volunteer activities over the last 28 years while staying home to raise her children including the Junior Forum, Houston Livestock Show, Goodwill Industries and many school related volunteer positions. She is looking forward to the next chapter in her life as an empty nester and plans to be the home away from home for many Rice University students next year! C.J. Melebeck 40 years of experience as a computer software architect. I have a Masters in Computer Information Systems and a Bachelors in Computer Science. I am employed as a Senior Analyst. I have served on the Board for the Space City Chapter and a member of the Lone Star Chapter in Pasadena, TX, Mike Bernard Chapter in Lafayette, LA, and associate member of Red Stick Chapter, Baton Rouge, LA. Serve as a Senior Judge and enjoy judging at every opportunity. 7 SPACE CITY CHAPTER Presents Hibiscus Show & Plant Sale Calendar 2016 With TENATIVE SHOW dates for 2016 Season CENTAL FLORIDA EPCOT, Orlando, FL.......................... It is five to six inches in size. Parents are White Diamonds by Toffee Crunch. It is hybridized by Matt and Barbara Martindale. It is also a seedpod mate to Midnight Star listed above. Texas Bloomers by Cindy Adkins Lone Star and Space City Chapters APRIL, MAY, JUNE 2016 Spring has definitely sprung in Texas. All the hibiscus in my yard have put out new leaves and some have started blooming. The last long-term forecast on The Weather Channel has below normal temperatures from June through August in our area. My plants in the greenhouses have been blooming all winter. They love the warmer temperatures and have been putting out many new buds. Now is the time to heavily feed your plants. Use an organic-based fertilizer initially. Follow that with a high-nitrogen fertilizer to get more blooms. You can use a product such as Foliar Plus several times a week as a spray on your plants. If you want blooms for the spring shows, do not prune now. It takes two to three months for blooms to appear after pruning. Flecks of Gold is a five-to-six-inch single bloom. It has a small red eye with silvery veins that change to pale yellow in the greenish body of the flower. In warmer weather, it has yellow flecks on the body. Dupont-Gerlich are the hybridizers. Parents are unknown. Midnight Star is a single gray-blue bloom. Its size ranges from six to seven inches. The eye is a bright red and bleeds into the body of the flower. The edge turns to a lighter gray color. Parents are White Diamonds by Toffee Crunch. Hybridizers are Matt and Barbara Martindale. Moorea Lovely Treasure is a large, eight-to-nine-inch bloom in my yard. It has a gray eye and peach colored edge. It usually blooms with a tall petaloid, in my micro climate. Parents are Moorea Violet Moon by Moorea Sugar Blue. Hybridizer is Charles Atiu. Sweet Sandy is a dark pink single bloom with huge white splotches on each petal. The eye is dark maroon. Its size is five to six inches. When it was first released into commerce, it was named Frosted Lipstick. Hybridizers are Carlos and Nola Reynolds. Parents are Kansas Night by Louisiana Flash. Tahitian Fire Ball is a seven-to-eight-inch bloom. It blooms both single and double. Its fire engine red body develops yellow splashes and splotches in warmer weather. Parents are California Dreaming by The Path. Hybridizer is Richard Johnson. Wishing you lots of blooms, Cindy MAY 29, 2016 19TH NEW ORLEANS HIBISCUS SHOW AND SALE 1 to 4:30 pm Grace King School Cafeteria Super Kool is a bright pink and white single. Its size varies from six to eight inches. The eye is a darker pink with white splotches and splashes. Hybridizer is Don Florus. Parents are Crantastic by Coral Bay.
