PSS ... UPDATE SPRING 2016 PRINCIPAL BORINGDON HALL GIVES WELCOME STUDENTS TASTE OF HOTEL SECTOR It has been an exciting and very busy start to the New Year with some great performances and teamwork from our students in representing the school. We were delighted by the full role that the students played in our recent Open Day; their presence and conduct was a credit to the school. Some of our sports teams have had their first fixtures and, individually, our sports students have competed both nationally and internationally. Our Year 12 students have undertaken their ‘Pre-Public’ level 3 examinations and our BTEC Extended Diploma students in both Sport and Hospitality have completed their first two units. We have launched our unique Sports Performance Programme which is bringing an extra dimension to helping students fulful their personal potential. One of Plymouth’s leading venues, Boringdon Hall Hotel, has teamed up with Plymouth Studio School to give Hospitality and Tourism students a taste of working in the industry. Year 10 student, Amber Beaton, has joined Head Chef, Chris Dyke, in the kitchens to find out about delivering top quality food for the hotel’s guests, corporate events and weddings and learn the skills needed to work in this fast-moving and demanding environment. Year 12 student, Aimie Evans, has started her on-going work placement with Boringdon’s front of house team, gaining experience in delivering first class customer service and finding out more about the skills needed for hotel and event management. Laura Cameron of Boringdon Hall Hotel, which is due to open its world-class Gaia Spa in the Spring comments, “We’re delighted to be working with Plymouth Studio School to help inspire students about opportunities in the hospitality and leisure industry and help raise standards within the sector for the future. “ I’d like to congratulate our current Head of Sixth Form, Emma Herod, on her appointment as Deputy Principal and look forward to working with her along with the new team of teachers who we are currently recruiting for the next academic year. Thanks also to all our employers who are helping to make new work placement opportunities possible. With this continued level of teamwork from students, teachers, employers and parents, I am confident that Plymouth Studio School will continue to go from strength to strength in providing a unique and exciting opportunity for students to aim for, and achieve, their best. Amber Beaton comments, “My ambition is to be a chef so this is a fantastic opportunity for me to find out what it’s really like. It’s exciting and fast-paced and I’m enjoying being part of the team.” Aimie Evans comments, “It’s been great to find out how hotel event management works and I‘d love to explore a career in this further now.” Matthew Lennon, Principal YEAR 12, 1st APPLICATION DEADLINE FOR 2016 ENTRY Saturday 16 April 2016, 10am - 1pm Apply now at www.plymouthstudioschool.co.uk OPEN EVENT, Saturday 23 April, 10 am – 1 pm. The mixed Year 10/12 students put on a great display, with Paige Harrison as captain and Katie Glanville taking up position in goal for the first time ever! A free kick from Jaydee Seaman resulted in a goal from Paige and Lucy Robinson scored in the second half. A goal in the last minute put Saltash in the lead 3-2 to win. Coach, Kat Endacott said, “I was so proud of all the girls – they were a great credit to the school. With a bit of work on positioning the team will be hard to beat!” Sports Lab Challenge: Thanks to Ben Anniss from the University of St Mark & St John’s Sports Science Lab, 17 students from our BTEC Extended Diploma in Sport recently took part in a sport science fitness testing session and got an insight into a career as a Sport Scientist. Coaching for Street Games: 12 sports students have added to their coaching knowledge by completing additional qualifications as ‘street games activators’ for football, basketball, dodge ball and tennis. The course, run by the University of St Mark & St John, is useful for those wanting to take up careers in community sports coaching and sports development. Steve Mooney, Director of Specialisms comments, “Our close links with the University are giving students great additional opportunities and experiences for developing their careers in sport.” SPORTS PERFORMANCE PROGRAMME UNDERWAY Our Sports Performance Programme, which combines expert coaching with the latest in screening, monitoring and psychological testing to help students fulfil their full sporting potential and personal goals, is now officially underway. The Programme runs alongside our GCSE/A level, Core PE and BTEC Sport qualification programmes and initial testing and screening using our state-of-the-art equipment is open to students of all abilities in all sports. The aim is to give everyone the opportunity to develop their existing sporting talents and develop a weekly individual training programme integrated with their academic timetable. In addition to a core programme, students can also work with our Olympic/Commonwealth level coaches in swimming, athletics and shooting. We aim to add specialist coaching in Basketball, Squash and Rugby in 2016. Our swimmers recently started their fortnightly sessions with Olympic/ Commonwealth swimmers, Antony James and Steve Beckerleg using our GoPro underwater cameras to help improve performance and technique. Lily Parsons and Joe Tibbetts, who also train with Leander swimming club, were able to put some of this into action at their recent Euro Meet in Luxembourg. NEW BUILDING UPDATE The opening of our new school building will now take place on 7th November when we return from our Autumn half term break. The construction programme has been extended due to unforeseen problems with site- contamination and clearance during the initial phases of the programme. This was unfortunately beyond the control of our contractors. We will continue operating from our own existing building, the sports centre, campus buildings and lecture theatres on-site at the University of St Mark & St John for the first half of the Autumn term. FIRST PRINCIPAL’S AWARD We hope you will bear with us in working around this change to the construction schedule and would like to assure you that we will be doing our very best to ensure students can continue with their studies and activities with minimum disruption. If you have any further queries about the arrangements please don’t hesitate to contact the school on [email protected].
