Set in the 1940s, Tommy is the story of a little boy who goes into a nearly catatonic
state, becoming deaf, dumb and blind. Eventually, his only form of communication
becomes pinball and his wizardry with the flippers propels him into the national
spotlight. Tommy is a story of hope, healing and human spirit that follows this child’s
journey from darkness to triumph. Based on The Who’s 1969 album, this one-of-akind production is filled with soaring anthems and bursting ballads, mind-exploding
images and pulsating dance numbers. Cancel by Jan 15… Min25/Max30…Includes:

This theatrically charged musical comedy thriller is about a publicity crazed actor turned
killer and the endearing detective who pursues him is based on the best-selling novel
that became a renowned movie. You’ll be on the edge of your seat as Detective Morris
Brummell chases a murderer through New York City, master of disguises unraveling
a complex tale involving befuddled detectives, meddling mothers, and glamorous
socialites. Can he find the killer, get the girl, and appease his disappointed mother all
before the next chorus? It’s a game of cat and mouse. It is a devilish blend of humor,
romance and murder with a tour de force with 4 actors playing 17 roles with a myriad
of disguises. Three entrée selection: Herb Wrapped Roast Pork Loin, Wok Seared
Whitefish or Seared vegetable Risotto. Cancel by: Jan 20…Min20/Max25… Includes:

Start sensibly.
We gradually allow our schedule to be taken over by the business of
the holidays. So now we should not jump in boldly. Exercise is only
effective if you participate. With this being said, find an exercise
activity that you enjoy. The activity needs to be scheduled at a time
of the day that you are most likely to participate. So if you are not a
morning person exercise later in the day. Classes may be interesting
but if they do not work with your schedule it will difficult to make
the effort to attend. When we do not accommodate our fitness
level, interests, time and flexibility we set our sights on failure.
Realistic goals.
Do not over commit your time to exercise. Look at ways to increase
activity. An examples: parking your car in a space further away
from your destination. Or find a project at home that will not only
increase your activity level but will improve your living conditions.
Try to dance, or a new recreational activity, a different exercise
class or program. Many times an exercise program is dictated by a
physicians’ opinion of your wellness. Always remember a fitness
professional can offer guidance.
Dietary adjustments.
Start small. The idea is to be able to make this a lifestyle over the
long term. First add water to the mix. By increasing water intake,
you feel fuller, your digestion is better and there are other longterm health benefits to hydration. Scheduling regular mealtimes
assist in keep you from experiencing extreme hunger and cravings.
Never deprive yourself of a special treat but make the treat an event.
It will make the whole experience more enjoyable. When eating
healthy foods becomes a habit and you break the habit, your body
really does not feel as well and lacks energy. This alone should be
the motivation to stick with a healthy meal plan.
The new you.
If this is not enough, picture yourself as a new creation, thinner,
more fit and self-sufficient. You will benefit greatly when you
experience more energy and self-confidence. Overall you will
experience better health and well-being.
New Year, New You!
Good Luck~

assistance.

Our meeting of December 6 was lightly attended, but still a
good time. We had a little celebration with coffee and cookies.
Thanks to all who brought something, especially to Irma who
took care of all our coffee needs. Several of the people in
attendance are going to Florida with Treasures of America, (See
below). There was a lot of questions on that, plus our great
traveler Caryl Mikrut filled us in on her recent trips. We also
had information on motorcoach trips and Fancy Free Travel
trips. All in all, it was a great time.
Here’s the information on the popular motor coach trip to
Daytona, in late winter, that so many Carillon residents have
taken. The trip dates for 2015 are February 21 through March
13.
Our advice to you if you are interested, is to contact Treasures
of America as soon as possible. This trip has grown greatly here
at Carillon. For more information, call Al or Valerie (708)5982295.
Our February meeting is Saturday, February 7. We are hoping
to have a speaker from Royal American Travel to tell us about
the upcoming motor coach trips with Diamond and White Star
Tours.
We wish you happy and safe travels always. Happy New Year

discussions geared toward the needs and interests of individuals
who are caregivers, family members, or friends of someone with
dementias. It is a chance to learn more about dementias and
what to expect along the way.
Those with the dementia are also welcome if they are able to sit
in the discussions and benefit from the group. They do not have
to enter the discussions if they are not comfortable or able to do
so.
Our support group is an opportunity to learn from and share
with others who are experiencing the same situations in their
interactions with someone with dementia. A support group helps
individuals understand that they are not alone in their situation
and that others do understand and can often offer suggestions
that may help. And it is comforting to know someone will listen
and understand.

AARP Tax-Aide is the nation’s largest free tax counseling and preparation
service for all seniors and middle and low income tax payers. Volunteer
counselors help to prepare Federal and State returns between Feb. 1
and April 15. The AARP Foundation administers the AARP Tax-Aide
Program, and in cooperation with the IRS, offers free IRS self study
training and certification in basic income tax preparation.
The self study training material is available in late November and the
self study can be done either by hard copy or on-line. A four day review
and certification class is held in January.
More volunteers are needed who, after certification, are willing to
commit to at least four day time hours one day each week at one of the
local tax preparation sites. To join the Tax-Aide Team and receive IRSCertified Self Study Training Material call Mr. Paul Ward at the Will
County Senior Services center 815-740-4215 or log on to the AARP

Now that winter’s settled in to stay, it’s time to look forward to lighting
up the night with the Theatre Guild’s Mardi Gras celebration, February
17—Fat Tuesday, headed by Kathleen Krauss and stage directed by
Vicki McIntosh. We’re working hard to make this a truly festive event
with your friends and neighbors as the featured performers. Maybe
you’ll be inspired to come in costume, not mandatory, but it will get
you into our drawing for the door prize. Come on, you know you’ve
been wanting to recycle that old “formal” or maybe some tails. It’s a
fantasy evening of fun and friends.
You won’t want to miss this one; get your table together. The first ticket

Watch for February dates on the bulletin board in the refreshment and
notice alcove of the clubhouse.

The journey of grief after loss is one of life’s most difficult
experiences, but we don’t have to walk alone. If you are grieving
the death of a loved one, please consider joining Carillon’s
bimonthly support group for bereaved adults and discover
the healing process within a safe, supportive and confidential
environment. The group will provide time to share stories,
process emotions, learn new coping skills and self-care practices.
The sessions are facilitated by Heartland Hospice Bereavement
Counselor and Carillon resident, Kathy Jarman.
Did you all have a good Thanksgiving? Now on to Christmas.
Put on your warm jammies, make a cup of hot chocolate and
watch your favorite Christmas movies.
And while you’re doing all that, get out your knitting needles
or crochet hooks and work on some presents for your family or
perhaps for a needy family. Or better yet, join Crafty Crafters.
You can even wear your jammies-we don’t care.
We meet the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month from 10:00 AM
– 11:30 AM in the Craft Ceramic Room. Pre-registration is not
required, but if you have questions, please call Kathy Jarman at
630-335-5658.

HAPPY 2015 TO ALL!!
Crafty Crafters is a group of knitters and crocheters who get
together every Wednesday in Club Room 2 from 12:30 to 3:00
p.m. We knit or crochet items that are then donated to nursing
homes, homeless shelters, women’s shelters, humane societies,
veterans, hospitals and any other organizations that are in need.
Don’t know how to crochet or knit or maybe just a little rusty
with your skills? We have people who will help you. We supply
you with the yarn. If you like to socialize and talk while serving
your community, this is the place for you. Hope to see you soon.
Our plans for this New Year are to continue working on charity projects.
We will be working on our Quilt of Valor and Patriotic Quilts. Our
intentions are to raffle off a quilt at the All American Breakfast. Some
of our projects include quilts for a Women’s shelter, pillow cases for
ConKerr Cancer as well as scarves and hats that are donated to the less
fortunate.
If you join us, you will meet Beverly Winters from Darlington.
Bev has lived in Carillon for 10 years and been a member of
Crafty Crafters for 9 ½ years. Bev learned to knit from her
grandmother. However, she learned to crochet from our group.
She says we are a super group of people. She likes making items
for charity, especially hats and lap robes. Hats are quick and easy
and she loves to mix patterns and colors for the afghans. Come
meet Bev and the other wonderful people in our group.
We have a UFO (unfinished objects) day scheduled for this month.
If you are in the club house on January 10 stop by to see some of our
projects.
There are so many talented people in our group. Hopefully over
the next year, you’ll get to know them.
Are you looking for a social and productive afternoon? The Club Room
3 door is always open on Friday afternoons from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Come join us and see for yourself. We are more than a social group,
yes we talk and laugh; but we also TEACH, SHARE and have FUN!!
Out of consideration for sensitive members, please do not wear perfume
or scented lotions. Thank You
Hope to see you soon.

The Needleworkers meet on Tuesdays from 1:00-3:30 in Club
Room 3. Anything you wish to create with a needle, the group
does: knitting, crocheting, cross-stitching, needlepoint, sewing,
some quilting, etc:
The second Tuesday of the month finds the needleworkers
enjoying lunch at different local restaurants before meeting at
the clubhouse.
If you are interested in working on any project that uses a needle,
come join the group. Members have knowledge of many crafts
and even though they do not teach, they will gladly try to help
with any stitching problems.

We hope everyone had a nice holiday sharing time with friends
and family. Another year has come to an end and we look forward
to a New Year and we hope good health and happiness for all.
Starting the New Year why not make one of your resolutions
to try something new. Perhaps that could be learning the art
of stained glass. You will be surprised that it is easier than you
think. We are a friendly group and would love to have you join
us. Why not stop by on Thursday or Saturday mornings from
9-12 and talk with us and meet our instructor Ed Mauer. There
is no fee to join or for your first project. And as always there is
no charge for using the stained glass equipment.

BETCHA DIDN’T KNOW THIS!!
On October 22, our Aberdeen neighbor, Walter Voyt, was
inducted into the Senior Illinois Hall of Fame and also
received the Governor’s Award for Outstanding Achievement
in Chemistry.
Called a “true American chemist and inventor” by the Illinois
Department on Aging, Walter was the 2014 inductee in the
labor force category.
Happy New Year to all! Best wishes for good health in the new
year, along with whatever blessings you’re hoping for.
There is so much to tell you about our newly elected Board of
Directors. They were seated at the December 2 Annual Meeting.
Each has sent me a brief autobiography, and I hoped to put in a
few sentences about each. Instead, I am going to feature several
of them in each of the next few articles, so that I don’t have to
eliminate any part of their stories.
YOUR NEW BOARD:
Ed Sebring President
Rita Sosa Vice President
Marge Kazlauskas Secretary
Jeannine Warren Treasurer
Mark Leisen Buildings and Grounds
Larry Young Architectural
Bob Mackanin Director
Also, we have some changes in our CAMA reps:
John Schuller CAMA Representative

Mark Leisen Buildings and Grounds
One of Walter’s discoveries, in 1976, was that a portion of
sunlight known as UVA light (which is also present in tanningparlor lamps) is carcinogenic and that it can be stopped by
broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Prior to his discovery, UVA light was thought to be harmless. It
is now known that UVA causes melanoma skin cancer.
Simple calculations estimate the total number of melanoma
prevented in the U.S. by the use of broad-spectrum sunscreens
in the last 30 years is about 21,000 (about 10% of the total
number: 2,100,000). The number of deaths prevented is
estimated at 30,000 (10% of the total number of 300,000).
It is estimated that hundreds of thousands of melanoma cases in
the USA have been prevented by the use of Walter’s invention.
On November 3, at the Plainfield Board of Trustees meeting,
Illinois Senator Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant presented Walter with
the “Illinois Senate Recognition Award”. He was congratulated
by the Board President, the Mayor, and other members. Most of
the 55+ year-old members said they wish they had started using
broad-spectrum sunscreens earlier in life.
He was interviewed in November by several local newspapers
(Joliet Herald News, Bugle, and Enterprise) which carried fullpage stories of Walter’s inventions.
You can read more on the internet by entering “Walter Voyt”
into Google, Bing, or Yahoo search engines.
We have some pretty special individuals in Aberdeen and you
have just ‘met’ one of them.
Ed Sebring, our new president, has been living in Carillon for
about three years. Before the move, he and his wife of 43 years,
Carol, lived in Wheaton and Glen Ellyn. Ed got his BBA degree
from Northwestern, and has been director of human resources at
TRW, Time Warner, and Levy Book Distributor. By the way, Ed
and Carol have 7 grandchildren all under the age of 10.
Rita Sosa came to Carillon in 2005. Rita became the secretary
on the board in 2006. Upon the death of Don Shultz several
years ago, Rita became the president of the board. Due to health
reasons, Rita has stepped back from that position, and is now
our vice president. Rita likes gardening, cooking, and especially
playing with her two dogs, Duncan and Aurora.
More to come next month on these fine volunteers that make
up our board.
For your information, we also have the dates of Andover-related
meetings. The CAMA Board Agenda meetings will be held at
the Foster Premier office on January 19, February 23, April 27,
June 22, August 24, October 19, and November 23. Residents
are welcome to attend, but there is no open forum.
The Homeowners’ bimonthly meetings are always on the first

Some humor for the new year. OLD IS WHEN: Your sweetie
says, “Let’s go upstairs and make love,” and you answer, “Pick
one. I can’t do both.” OLD IS WHEN your friends compliment
you on your new alligator shores and you’re barefoot. OLD
IS WHEN a sexy babe or hunk catches your fancy and your
pacemaker opens the garage door. OLD IS WHEN going braless
pulls all the wrinkles out of your face. OLD IS WHEN you don’t
care where your spouse goes just as long as you don’t have to go
along. OLD IS WHEN you are cautioned to slow down by the
doctor instead of by the police. OLD IS WHEN getting a little
action means you don’t need to take any fiber today. OLD IS
WHEN “Getting Lucky” means you find your car in the parking
lot. OLD IS WHEN an “all nighter” means not getting up to use
the bathroom. OLD IS WHEN you are not sure these are jokes!!!
The New Year is here. Let’s make this the year that you all
send family news my way to be shared with Applegate Friends
and Neighbors in upcoming Talk of the Town articles. Mary

Kimberleigh S. De Bruin (Kim) was born in Elmhurst, Illinois,
on August 27, 1949, with the maiden name of Dienst. She
graduated from Franklin Junior High and Wheaton North High
School in 1967 where she was a member of the very first class in
the brand new high school. Kim was the Managing Editor of the
school year book and the Editor of the school newspaper. After
starting college at the University of Missouri she completed
the degree requirements for a B.S. in Education at Northern
Illinois University in 1971. Kim taught elementary school for
one year at Rochelle, Illinois, followed by a job at Sears as a
catalog order buyer and a job at Illinois Bell as an installation
foreman. After her children were born she became a stay-athome mom. During this time she developed an interest in Yoga
and over many succeeding years Kim has been a class leader of
Hathu Yoga as well as Chair Yoga for the elderly. In addition,
as a member of the Junior League, Kim has volunteered to give
informational lectures concerning child abuse. Kim is an avid
reader and unfortunately, in recent years, she has had a chronic
health problem which has greatly curtailed her activities..
Richard P. De Bruin (Rick) was born in Madison, Wisconsin,
on May 22, 1949. He graduated from St. Michael’s Elementary
School in Wheaton and then Wheaton North High School in
1967. Rick excelled in sports, earning 9 varsity letters, named
Athlete of the Year in 1967, and named to the Chicago Tribune
all-star baseball team. He started college at Arizona State but
completed a degree in Business Administration at the University
of Wisconsin. The first post-college job was at Continental
Illinois National Bank. At the end of 5 years he was a Vice
President of Bond Investments. Rick continued in this line
of work for the remainder of his career. Employers included:
Weeden & Co., Smith Barney, Prudential (for 18 years), Piper
Jaffrey, and Advest Investments. His last employer was Vining
Sparks LLP, where he finally retired in January, 2013. Besides
coaching volley ball, soccer, and baseball he has been personally

active in sports (including a 5 year stint with the Downer’s Grove
Volley Ball Team) all his life up until 4 years ago when he broke a
hip. Rick continues to play golf and has a hobby of playing Santa
Claus at Christmas time for various organizations.
Kim and Rick De Bruin were married on January 6, 1978.
Their daughter Susan was born in 1980 and their son Peter was
born in 1982. The De Bruin’s first home was in Clarendon Hills
until 1983, followed by a home in Burr Ridge until September
of 2013, before moving to Carillon. They have done extensive
family travelling as well as by themselves and have had pet dogs
throughout their married life.

We in Bristol wish all of Carillon a healthy and happy new year!
May you and yours prosper in 2015. We pray for a better winter
than last year.
Our new front gate decorations are in place. Thanks to Judy
Yambor and her crew of elves. The elves include: Dick Cherney,
Norma Thompson, Barb Wolf, Maryanne Cooper, Dave
Griesener, Joe Muraida, Pete Carrera, and Steve Howicz. As
usual it was very well done!
Proud grandparents, Judy and Jack Keeler, would like to share
some news about their granddaughter, Gianna Salzbrunn.
Gianna is a junior at Montini High School in Lemont. Gianna
is a member of the track team and was recently named to the
2014 Girls Cross Country IHSA All State Team. The honor
is given to individuals placing among the top 25 at the State
Finals. She was also recently inducted into the National Honor
Society.
Our Christmas party with Applegate was very festive. The meal
14
from Inglenook was wonderful and the entertainment was
enjoyable. There was even a surprise visit from Santa!
We have lost two Bristol residents. Bill Hauser and Jeanne
Olson both passed away on Thanksgiving. Bill was one of the
original Bristol residents. He was the “go to” neighbor for those
of us with a new home. He and Rosemary had a mobile home.
They travelled many times to Southern Illinois to visit their son
and family. He was an avid model train buff. Bill even had a
short stint on Bristol’s architectural committee. In later years,
Bill’s “job” was to take Rosemary shopping and working out at
the club. He will be sorely missed. Our sympathy to Rosemary
and their family. In addition, Jeanne Olson died after a long
illness. Jeanne was also a long-time resident of Bristol. Jeanne
raised six children and is survived by her husband John. Our
condolences to the Olson family.
Some residents have been hospitalized. Pat Matthews and Bob
Skinkus could use our prayers and good thoughts. Give them a
call or drop them a note of support if you’re able.
A Poem to Share:
I see children as kites.
You spend a lifetime trying to get them off the ground.
You run with them until you are both breathless......
They crash!
You add a longer tail......
They hit the rooftop.
You pluck them out of the spout.
You patch and comfort, adjust and teach.
You watch them lifted by the wind and assure them that
someday they will really fly.
Finally they are airborne but they need more string,
So you keep letting it out
With each twist of the ball of string there is a sadness that goes
with the joy
Because the kite becomes more distant and somehow you know
That it won’t be long before the beautiful creature will snap
the lifeline
That bound you together and sore as it was meant to
sore free and alone.
Only then do you know that you did your job.
Happy New Year!

Welcome to our new resident in Unit 205, Bruce Henriksen, who

far, with another due in January. Bruce’s interests and hobbies

include golf, reading, and being an amateur historian. His first
impressions of life at Carillon are that it is quiet and there are
plenty of activities in which to become involved. Welcome to
the Buckingham family, Bruce!
Our prayers and heartfelt sympathy goes out to Gloria Ventresca
and her family on the death of her husband and our friend,
Nick, on December 6.
Spectacular Decorations
Before I wish everyone a Happy New Year, I want to mention
the incredible decorating job 10 of our Buckingham ladies did in
our lobbies. It was a great team effort. I especially want to thank
Carol Sowa for her efforts and ‘loaning’ us her Christmas tree
for the outer lobby, and Sue Beckman for her ingenuity, creative
talents and hard work. We also had lots of goodies to eat and hot
chocolate to drink....if we’d had a fireplace going, it would have
been perfect. I’ll be leaving them up until January 4th so the rest
of you need to come by....you can see some of it from the outside
but the inside is even better.
Now, I’ll wish all a very happy, healthy, and prosperous New
Year. Let’s count our blessings as we undertake the many
challenges that may face us. I recently started sponsoring a 3 yr
old boy in Haiti. Every time I think of his living conditions, I
thank God for what I have and am grateful that I can help this
boy in some way. May God bless you and your family in 2015.

our aging buildings. The last “reserve study” was done in 2001,
and another is being considered so we don’t get hit by surprises

You should get prompt responses, but if not, call Jim Quinn

should be aware of coyote sightings in Cambridge, mostly near
the golf course areas. To be safe, carry a whistle (or yell to scare
them away), do not stare at them, walk away but do not turn
your back, and pick up small dogs.
This year’s Cambridge board meeting schedules continue to be
the 3rd Tuesday of every month at 1:30 pm in the clubhouse.
The general HOA meetings are scheduled for the 1st Wednesday
of even numbered months at 7 pm in the clubhouse theater.
However, the January board meeting and February HOA
meetings will not be held.

get well soon, it’s New Years!!
Article from Dick and Pat Nielsen:
The Nielsen groups of ten went on a Danube River cruise. Our
first stop Budapest is two different towns. Buda is more modern
with more jobs and Pest is where everyone lives except for the
really rich, and is very old and beautiful. Everywhere we went
the buildings were so old it was hard to wrap our head around
how they might have been built with no machinery just brute
strength and lots of workers. The artistry of the times is mind
boggling. That kind of architecture is my idea of real art. In
Vienna a church was out of this world, very ornate and looked
like fine lace. I wanted a tee shirt with that church on it and
was unable to find one. When we caught up with my daughter
she had that shirt. I was so mad, but didn’t have time to find
the shop. One place we stopped, Durnstein, was so cute even
though only500 people live there. The town is on a steep hill
and the road is made of cobblestones. The people who live there
must have the strongest legs imaginable. They grow apricots
and grapes and the scenery is breathtaking with every color you
could imagine. The apricots were delicious. We walked at least 5
miles every day, sometimes more. Lots of hills and cobble stones.
When you are walking up them they feel more like mountains
Our last stop was in Melk and again we toured the city and had
free time. Everyone had a wonderful time.

ANOTHER FROM THE WORLD TRAVELING DYNAKOS:
Rose and Alex spent 10 days on the beautiful island of Kauai,
Hawaii. The weather was beautiful and the scenery gorgeous.
However, on their second day, Alex fell and broke his right wrist
and wearing a cast. As he tells the story, he was surfing for the
first time and a big white shark came out of the water and he hit
the shark with his surfing board and that is when he broke his
wrist. (I should put this down in with the random facts). They
still had a nice time in Hawaii with lots of memories.

New Looney Law still on the books: It’s against the law to drive
more than 2000 sheep down Hollywood Boulevard.
Another random fact: Experts tell us that the human body has
about 60,000 miles of blood vessels. Holy RBCs (red blood
cells), that is a huge number of miles. Out of that large number,
I wonder how many of mine are still flowing freely and not
stopping at STOP signs or forks in the road.

The truest measure of life is not its length, but the fullness in
which it is lived. Frank Machowski, one of our original owners,
enjoyed living in Carillon, our Deepest Sympathy to his wife
Florence and their family and friends on his death December
5th.
Reminder!! There is no Carlisle HOA meeting in January, the
next meeting is March 11th 7pm in the clubhouse.
The security committee reports that many people have a lot
of stuff such as decorative planters and other decorations
obstructing the pathway to their front door. This pathway needs
to be kept clear and accessible in case emergency workers need to
enter and bring in their equipment like stretchers, ECT. Thank
you for your attention to this matter.
Did you know (I didn’t), that McDonald’s has a huge
Innovation Center in Romeoville? Opened in 2001 the Center
brings together engineers, researchers, designers, vendors and
franchisees, as they work to improve McDonald’s service.
Most days at least one of the mock restaurants housed in the
warehouse acts like an actual McDonalds during the breakfast,
lunch or dinner rush. Each year, McDonald’s operators from 2530 countries rotate through the Center finding ways to train
staff, handle menu changes or evaluate a redesigned restaurant
layout. The mock drive-thru can be moved to accommodate
the side of the car used by a driver in a specific country. The
focus is really on what customers are looking for. Customers are
played by retirees or students and two of our very own residents,
Florence Krock and Judy Gillono work there! The Chicago
Tribune did a large article about the Center in the Business
section on Sunday, October 19th and Florence was pictured as
a customer going thru the mock Australian drive-thru! Sounds
like interesting work!

FIRST - Here’s hoping you have a phantasmagorical New Year
and one that brings peace, happiness and good fortune in life’s
ever changing landscapes.
YOU WIN! What better way to start the New Year than with a
free…wait for it…round trip…there’s more…all expenses paid
transportation to the exciting first 2015 9:00 a.m. Men’s Breakfast
on Tuesday, January 2nd at luxurious Larry’s Diner on quaint,
yet fashionable Lockport Road. Imagine, you’ll actually dine by
the heart of historic downtown Plainfield. The sights you’ll see
will (probably not) last a lifetime. You may even interact with a
resident or two from Darlington. In brief: Call Ken Mueller at
815-407-1385 to snag a seat in his car. Newcomers are especially
welcome.
THE GIFT OF GIVING – The recent Harvest Saturday was a
success thanks in no short order to Chelsea’s exceptional team of
volunteers. They include Jim Bergen, Ray Sliz, Ralph Osuch,
Roger Ferguson and Mike Guistolise. The annual event helped
stock area food pantries to aid those in need. Remember, every
day can be an event as the pantries need donations year round.
WELL DESERVED – Dolores Krolo smiled, blushed and
waved it off. Still, the applause came at last month’s Homeowners
Association Board Meeting in appreciation for her volunteer
work in decorating our monuments. Nice.
MOST WELCOME – If you have yet to do so, say hello to
our new neighbors. They include Robert and Naomi Webber at
21443 Juniper Lane, Annette Farinella at 21341 Juniper Lane
and Karen Moran at 21416 Juniper Lane.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY SNOWBIRD – Barbara Kobel, who less
than a week ago jetted off to her Sarasota, Florida retreat for the
winter, celebrates her birthday this month. To celebrate Easter,
her daughter, Colleen, is flying Barb to her home in South Padre
Island, Texas and then back to her own warm weather abode in
the “Sunshine State.”
SEND SOME CHEER with a card or a note to Don Cassidy.
He’s been under the weather for awhile now and could use a lift.

TRUEISM FROM NEIL STRAIT – “Kindness is more than
deeds. It is an attitude, an expression, a look, a touch. It is
anything that lifts another person.”
FINALLY – This year, do treat yourself like the royalty you most
certainly are.

A DATE TO REMEMBER
The Men’s Breakfast will be Thursday, January 8, 2015, 9 am at
Café Romeo Restaurant at 135th & Rt. 53.
And then the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just
before the bell rang indicating the end of the test, he wrote:
7) It comes in two attractive containers and it is high enough off
the ground where the cat can’t get it.
He got an A.

It is almost time for “Auld Lang Syne” so HAPPY NEW YEAR
neighbors. We share the hope that 2015 will be a healthy and
prosperous year for all in every way for you and your families.
A HAPPY & HEALTHY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE
The next breakfast/brunch will be at the Breakfast Club on
Weber on Wednesday, February 25th. No RSVP is needed for
this one, just come and have a great time. See you soon.
Please keep Bob Nemec’s wife, Frances, in your prayers. She is
dealing with health issues right now.
Here are a few tips from one of our cold weather friends.
Keep your headlights clear with car wax! Just wipe ordinary
car wax on your headlights. It contains special water repellents
that will prevent that messy mixture from accumulating on your
lights – lasts 6 weeks.
Squeak-proof your wipers with rubbing alcohol! Wipe the wipers
with a cloth saturated with rubbing alcohol or ammonia. This
one trick can make badly streaking & squeaking wipers change
to near perfect silence & clarity.

Cleaning the desktop and sharing activities from last year we
have:
The 17th year of the Dorchester Men’s Golf League wrapped
up with a banquet at Al’s Steakhouse in Joliet on October
23rd. Among the thirty eight people that attended was former
Dorchester resident Bill Reichert and his wife Sandy. Bill along
with Jim Garnett started the League back in 1998. Other past
members of the League that attended were Bernie Siedlecki,
Ray Reece, Hank Luebeck, Don Damm, and Larry Kamba.
Ron Cassidy was saluted as the only player not to miss a week
of golf throughout the season. Larry Gurtowski was awarded the
2014 Dorchester Men’s Golfer of the Year trophy.
Ice-proof your windows with vinegar! Frost on its way? Just fill a
spray bottle with three parts vinegar to one part water & spritz it
on all your windows at night. In the morning they’ll be clear of
icy mess. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which raises the melting
point of water – preventing water from freezing.
Nance Nagy writes: Our16th annual pinochle banquet was held
on November 13th at the usual “haunt” --Bohemian Crystal. We
had 30 people in attendance—a mixture of current players, subs,
and previous players. First place prize was taken by newcomers
from Chelsea, Helen and Bernardo Levy. Second place went
to Nance and Jack Nagy with Audrey and Tony Wesley taking
third place. The ever coveted hats went to JoAnn Nieman and
Pauline Lewand. As always, if you are a pinochle player we
would love to have you join us. Call the Nagy’s.
Prevent car doors from freezing shut with cooking spray! Spritz
cooking oil on the rubber seals around car doors & rub it in with
a paper towel. The cooking spray prevents water from melting
into the rubber.
Our condolences go out to Roger and Marge Merrimack on the
passing of Marge’s 101 year old mother. She will be dearly missed
by her family and friends. Hoping the many memories that such
a long life brings will help Marge and Roger at this time.
Fog-proof your windshield with shaving cream! Spray some
shaving cream on the inside of your windshield & wipe it off with
paper towels. Shaving cream has many of the same ingredients
found in commercial defoggers.
Claudia Pacini writes the following women from Dorchester,
namely Ruth Campbell, Carol Davis, Lorraine Cern, Fran
Mildice, Jeanne Fulton, Claudia, and Lottie Avramovic
(Darlington) enjoyed a five day trip to Branson. They saw seven
Christmas shows including a magician who picked Claudia to be
his assistant. What a fun way to begin celebrating the Christmas
season.
De-ice your lock in seconds with hand sanitizer! Just put some
hand sanitizer gel on the key & the lock & the problems solved!
Biology Exam
This is in straight from Scotland. Students in an advanced
Biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question
was, ‘Name seven advantages of Mother’s Milk’. The question
was worth 70 points or none at all. One student, in particular,
was hard put to think of seven advantages. However, he wrote:
1) It is perfect formula for the child.
2) It provides immunity against several diseases.
3) It is always the right temperature.
4) It is inexpensive.
5) It bonds the child to mother and vice versa.
6) It is always available as needed.
