freedom with flair from TRIPLE BUNKS HERE WE COME three great new caravans WHAT’S UNDER THE BED? new invention could change things forever WIN! A FANTASTIC HOLIDAY IN FRANCE CRUSADER TEMPEST unique layout taking the caravan world car by stor storm From the team that brings you YOUR NEW EN SUITE think tiles, space, big mirrors… WELCOME: THE ELDDIS RANGE OF CARAVANS welcome Hot Tip The six-berth triple bunk 596 see page 6 Hot Tip The fixed double bed and large washroom of the 624 Elddis big name gets even bigger The Elddis caravan brand gets bigger, simpler and more elegant this year thanks to some major changes which affect what your caravan’s called, and which models you’ll be able to look around at shows and on dealer forecourts. This year sees some exciting new layouts and great improvements, so the new Elddis range has something for everyone. In all there are four Elddis ranges, as shown right, to suit your budget. And if you like a layout from one range but a fabric style from another, the good news is that all the Elddis Avanté, Elddis Odyssey and Elddis Crusader fabrics are interchangeable – you can order any of the three fabric choices for any van in those three ranges. Plus, new for this year, the water ingress warranty goes up to six years on all models. The entry level Xplore is now part of the Elddis range, with prices from just £10,945. The interior design is every bit as pleasing as caravans higher up in the Elddis lineup. As you’d expect, some things which come as standard with the Avanté are paid for extras with Xplore: including Winterhoff stabilizer and an alarm. With six-berth caravans under £12,000 Xplore brings family caravanning to people who might otherwise have to buy secondhand. Hot Tip It’s a small step up from Xplore in price, but a big step up in spec. The Avanté range gets an improved BPW Swing V-Tec chassis to improve towing stability and comes with a Winterhoff WS3000 stabiliser. And you get more sockets – a double in every kitchen. The kitchen is well equipped with a Thetford 115-litre fridge, a three-burner hob and a domestic style oven, plus the 700watt microwave. The new Avanté 646, based on the new Crusader Tempest, is the caravan to watch this year! Hot Tip We love the brand new 634 model Crusader Tempest - unique layout with triple bunks see page 4 contents 4 Triple bunks and the Tempest 7 Win a holiday in France 8 Big new washrooms 10 Choosing a fixed bed Elddis Odyssey brings you six layouts, all with alloy wheels, five power sockets, and more comfortable beds. You also move up to a 7ft 6in wide chassis giving a more spacious feel. There’s a new Rimini double shower cubicle in some models (see page 8). Luxuries include a gas barbecue point and awning warmer, but if you buy Odyssey, you’ll choose it for its layouts – the least expensive island bed caravan is here (with memory foam as standard) and four other models have enormous end washrooms. 14 Which layout to choose 2 freedom with flair from Elddis This is Elddis at its most luxurious, with prices £1000 more than Odyssey, and going up to £19,995 (a price which will buy you something quite special, as you’ll see when you turn the page). In practical terms you get easy lift beds with memory foam (fixed bed layouts), smart Sports silver alloy wheels, suspension dampers and an extra large gas bottle locker. In certain layouts, there’s a stonking great Thetford 175-litre fridge with separate freezer. freedom with flair from Elddis 3 GREAT TRIPLE-BUNK CARAVANS Crusader Tempest because families eat together WINNER Best Family Caravan over £13,500 RUNNER-UP Caravan of the Year Layout now also available in the Avanté range The wardrobe next to the triple bunks is massive, with three drawers underneath The bottom two bunks fold up out of the way to give storage for larger items, such as bikes This is the Elddis flagship – a caravan with a brand new type of side dinette, where a family of four can sit down to meals At a glance: or games of Scrabble. With a triple sumptuously row of bunks for the kids too… styled triple bunk layout with a T his is Elddis’ big story of 2010; a layout we’ve not wide side dining seen before in a caravan. The Tempest’s approach area to triple bunks is to lock them in a corner next to a wardrobe and opposite the washroom. A really nice touch is that both the bottom and middle of the three bunks can fold away so you’ve a very large storage area here for bicycles, which can be stashed away unobtrusively in this corner section. There are curtains to each bunk for privacy, and the bottom two bunks each have their own tinted window. The mid section is what this caravan’s really about though; it has a dining area big enough for four (reasonably skinny) people to sit and eat together directly opposite the large kitchen. This area has its own full sized Heki roof light in addition to the one at the front lounge, so it’s a bright and sunny area despite the dark privacy glass to the side windows. The kitchen has a massive amount of food storage space in two full height cupboards as well as two roof lockers and two drawers. There’s a good amount of worktop space too, with two powerpoints to it. The hob is a three-burner gas affair, easy to use and ergonomically designed. The fridge/freezer is opposite, and there’s a 175-litre Thetford with a curved silver door; separate freezer compartment above, and a huge cupboard above that. The Crusader styling for this year is simply gorgeous; a textured weave in a linen colour, with toning detail in mulberry. We love the dark brown carpets which are going to hide all manner of marks. SPECIFICATION ■ Berths: 6 ■ MTPLM: 1880kg ■ Width: 2.28m ■ Overall length: 7.96m Large food cupboards; the axle cuts into the bottom of the right hand compartment but there’s still a lot of room for your food Wide dining area comfortably seats four people and there’s a rail to support a table. Elddis now has four new triple bunk caravans, including the Tempest on the previous page Elddis Xplore 596 £13,495 New for 2010 RUNNER-UP Best Family Caravan under £13,500 At a glance: Low cost triple bunk caravan, great for kids and storage I n Elddis’ range of triple bunk caravans, the Xplore is the cheapest and lightest. At the back of the caravan the row of three bunks has two windows, and you can fold up the bottom two bunks to make this into a storage area. A further flap lifts up from the floor to contain boxes, bikes and suitcases. Opposite there’s a wide sofa and a single chair, which convert into the sixth bed. A concertina blind pulls across to separate this children’s bedroom from the rest of the caravan. The front dinette has full-length sofas converting to double beds, with a chest of drawers. Between these two compartments you get an ample sized kitchen and fridge. There’s a large cupboard for your food and a huge amount of wardrobe storage opposite – in hanging space, cubbyholes and a floor level cupboard. Elddis Avanté 556 £14,295 New for 2010 T he same layout as the Elddis Xplore 556 (body size) and only £700 more for the next level up in trim and accessories. To our minds the simple facts that the Winterhoff stabiliser is standard with the Avanté, and the iDC stability control is an option (it’s not available with Xplore caravans) take this into another league for comparatively little extra expense. However it is a smaller caravan; the Xplore gives you a massive double wardrobe while the Avanté has a single. And the Avanté is a single-axle version. The Avanté washroom is a little smaller, with a pull down sink over the toilet. Inside, the bed arrangement is the same. You get some nice extras In the living area there’s a corner sideboard with a Truma water heater underneath and a TV point and aerial point above. Elddis has gone for sideboards big time this year, many of them characterised by a hatchway into the bedroom with a Venetian blind. The bed raises on gas struts and has outside access to the storage space underneath. The bedroom is bright thanks to a deep window. At a glance: A shorter triple bunker, single axle and with more spec like a double socket in the kitchen (Xplore has just one). Both Xplore and Avanté upholstery schemes are fresh and modern so there’s little to choose between the two in terms of interior feel, but the Avanté gives you a better quality wood-framed locker door, and a nicer looking curved front Thetford fridge. These caravans each boast great facilities Elddis Odyssey 540 £15,995 New for 2010 E lddis’ take on the 540 layout has a longer sofa to the back; a clever move as it means that an adult can use it as a single bed so the caravan is transformed into a true four berth. The really striking thing about the Elddis Odyssey 540 layout is the newly designed washroom. It’s smaller than some Elddis end washrooms but is cunningly designed to make really good use of an L-shaped floor plan. As you go in, the sink is on your left. The loo is in the corner and the room then reaches around to your right so there’s plenty of legroom in front of the toilet. The shower cubicle is at the end on the right, and in front of it there’s a full length mirror with plenty of space to stand back and see what you’re wearing top to toe. We rate this very highly as an excellent use of space. At a glance: new L shaped washroom and a fixed double bed In the living area there’s a corner sideboard with a Truma water heater underneath and a TV point above. The one to the left has shallow shelves ideal for toiletries, while the cupboard on the right has deeper shelves ideal for clothing and towels. Lovely deep worktops too, with a wooden edge. Where you do see the difference between the two caravans is in the washroom area. We can testify that a 5ft 5in journalist can stretch right out on the right hand sofa with plenty of room to spare. This is a deliberate move by Elddis this year – increasing one front sofa to 1.80m in length to make these fixed bed layouts more family friendly; more space for eating and more single bed options for sleeping. The opposite sofa is 1.70m to accommodate the axle. In the middle of the caravan there’s a At a glance: sideboard area, also Fixed double housing the Truma bed with corner blown air heater, and it has a window (with washroom a Venetian blind) into alongside the bedroom – it’s a fabulous TV station, equipped with powerpoint and aerial socket; or use it for overflow when cooking. The food cupboards it provides are Elddis Avanté 540 £14,195 New for 2010 T his is the same layout as the Odyssey 540; and it’s already proving one of the most popular layouts in the new Elddis range. We love the L-shaped washroom with its long mirror. Again, the Avanté trim is one of our favourites from Elddis this year; the Thetford gunmetal fridge marks this Avanté out as a step above the Xplore range and we like its silver grey curtains. The 540 is the lowest-priced Elddis to get both a fixed double bed and an end washroom – a winning layout in anyone’s book. There’s outside access to the under bed space for storage and this, like its sister van, the slightly 10 freedom with flair from wider Odyssey, has the new L-shaped washroom – it feels less spacious than some Elddis end washrooms but it’s a truly efficient use of that space. At a glance: fixed double bed with new L-shaped washroom SPECIFICATION ■ Berths: 4 ■ MTPLM: 1540kg ■ Width: 2.23m ■ Overall length: 7.34m WE LIKE ■ L-shaped washroom Elddis enormous. The kitchen opposite is light on worktop space and resolves this thanks to a sturdy flap which extends over one surface when in use. The bedroom is comfortable; gas struts to the bed frame though there’s no outside door to the storage area here. The corner washroom is small, but there’s a washbasin in the bedroom and a huge full-length mirror there. Between the bedroom and kitchen is a ¾ length wardrobe, and since it doesn’t have to house the Truma heater, there’s a large boot cupboard underneath. Altogether amazing value for a fixed bed caravan with plenty of interesting touches in layout and furnishings. Elddis Odyssey 634 £17,495 Elddis Avanté 626 £15,395 New for 2010 T his is a real show stealer. If you only have time to look around two Elddis caravans this year, make it the Crusader Tempest and the Odyssey 634. Why? As soon as you walk in, there is a beautifully open-plan feel to the caravan, with a chrome pole supporting a cabinet on the end of the kitchen unit and giving an open view to the bedroom. There are three powerpoints here – two at kitchen cabinet level and one at high cabinet level, so any consumer electronics you can possibly need can be housed here, with easy access to both kitchen and bedroom. The bedroom is bright, with a tall window and two floor height cupboards, and there’s outside access to the underbed space. There’s a tall wardrobe with a shoe cupboard underneath. The end washroom is truly and utterly massive, with a huge shower cubicle, and a full length mirror with plenty of space around it to stand back and inspect your outfit. There’s a tall cupboard full of shelves for toiletries. Best for family living At a glance: gobsmacking interior with an open plan feel Back in the main body of the caravan, the kitchen has a very stylishly curved cupboard with a curved door hiding small wire drawers. It’s a capacious cooking area and you can make use of extra workspace which extends into the bedroom. The fridge is opposite, with further worktop space and a cupboard. If you ever fancied yourself as the owner of a Fleetwood Heritage, before that company went bust last year, the 634 is something you really have to see. What Elddis have done is understand that you’ll be using the sink more often than the shower so it’s been moved out into the bedroom as a vanity unit. The kitchen is great: it stands opposite the door, and faces a very large sideboard which you can use as extra worktop space or for the TV. Two cupboards and one drawer, plus the Trumatic heater stand underneath. It’s an arrangement which allows the tall wardrobe to have a separate cupboard for shoes or laundry which in other caravans is often used up by the heater. Odyssey has the most dramatic colour scheme of the four Elddis ones on offer and if you want something more neutral, don’t forget you can select the Avanté or Crusader one instead – could very well be worth doing because Odyssey is wider than Avanté, and on average £1000 less than similar Crusader models. freedom with flair from Elddis 11 FIXED BED MODELS Elddis Odyssey 550 £15,995 Elddis Crusader Cyclone £19,995 Island bed At a glance: Award-winning layout island bed with separate shower and toilet rooms At a glance: T his caravan is a longstanding favourite with Which Caravan – it won the award for Best Couple’s Caravan in the 2008 Which Caravan Awards, while its sister caravan, the Compass Rallye 550 won the same award in 2009. There are two powerpoints ideally placed for your kettle or TV. Elddis Crusader Aurora £16,995 Improved layout I t’s really nice to see that Elddis Crusaders have retained their Hartal loftstyle split doors this year which make them very distinctive and stylish on site. This particular model benefits from the Elddis decision to lengthen one of the front sofas this year to make the single bed options more versatile for families – there really is plenty of space for an adult to stretch out on the right hand side of the caravan. There’s a very nice amount of storage space under the bed. Gas struts of course, and this one has an external door into the storage area, which is a big plus. This is really one to watch: a little bird tells us that if customers like it, it could be on its way into some Elddis front lounges from next year. The Supercyclone is perfect if you want a layout which will last as your kids get older and want full sized beds, and its equally good with two couples holidaying together because your sleeping areas are so separate: the shower and loo are opposite each other with doors which draw across to both sides – the inhabitants of either bedroom can have access, but in use it effectively creates an en-suite which can face in either direction, depending on who’s using it. The Buccaneer is the one to choose if you want luxurious extras: air con is available, and you can choose leather upholstery as an option on fixed bed models. This means braking systems, anti-snake devices and Winterhoff hitch-head stabilisers are uniquely designed to work with these bases. The BPW Swing V-Tech chassis has been designed to give you superior ride quality, enhanced cornering stability and enhanced high-speed towing stability through constant dynamic self-steering. Hitching is made quicker and easier with Elddis’ exclusive BPW Easy Brake. The comfortable brake release is a single lever operation, with no awkward push button and has an integrated shock absorber and track stabilisation. The Winterhoff WS3000 stabiliser provides outstanding stability control in sway and pitch and all-round better driving comfort. ■ What is iDC? An optional extra is BPW’s innovative and industry-leading Intelligent Drive Control (iDC), exclusively available on Elddis touring caravans. With an automatic anti-snaking device, the iDC system detects any risk of snaking and gives you safe course correction in seconds. Its unique Failsafe Function ensures that your iDC works seamlessly, even in the event of a power failure. iDC is an option on Elddis Avanté, Odyssey and Crusader caravans (it’s supplied as standard on Buccaneers). 14 freedom with flair from Elddis Shock absorbers are available on everything except the Elddis Xplore ■ If you’re looking at Xplore, consider going up to Avanté, which will allow you to select the iDC anti-snake system as an extra ■ We love the flexibility of the new fabric change option ■ Have a look at the unique side-sliding bed in the Super Cyclone; we predict you’ll be seeing a lot more of this device in ranges to come ■ If choosing an Xplore, particularly one which is near the weight limit of your car, look at having a Winterhoff stabiliser fitted to give you more confidence on the road Group Advertisement Manager: Sam Lewis 01778 391154 Cyclone M IMPROVED LAYO UT SuperCyclone Publisher: John Greenwood Production editor: Marie Vaira Tempest 626 UNIQUE NEW LA YOUT Words: Sally Pepper 01778 391111 Photography: Elddis and John Chapman Design: David Weaver Lisa Watson-Bailey Emma Frost 646 UNIQUE NEW LA YOUT freedom with flair from Elddis 15 a caravan like no other It could only be Elddis.
