The NZ Brick Distributors team will help to make the experience as satisfying as possible. > Dynasty - Cognac Illusion Monier and Austral Bricks are made from natural minerals that are kiln fired to lock in their colour and strength for life. The composition of the raw materials as well as the firing process may cause each run to differ. The resulting colour variation is inherent in the process and part of the appeal of our natural products. Selection tools available to you, we recommend you use at least three of these: Brochures and Website – a great way to narrow down your selection but remember colours and textures are only indicative. Sample Boards – some builders have sample boards in their offices, these are a good way to view the bricks. Selection Centres – visit a NZ Brick Distributors Selection Centre to view display walls. We also have tools such as window joinery and roof colour swatches to help with your selection. Sample Packs – you can request a sample from us which we can send to you. This will be from the current batch and will give a good indication of brick colour. Recently Constructed Houses – we can provide you a list of recently constructed houses that you can view from the street. Considering a blended brick? Be aware we endeavour to always show a light and dark brick however the final blend will not be in equal proportions and there will be a range of colours between the light and dark. Consider your mortar colour and joint finish as this can have a dramatic affect on your homes overall appearance. See page 4 of this catalogue for more advice on mortar colour and joint finishes. 3 Mortar, that finishing touch Your choice of mortar colour and joint finish can dramatically change the look of your home. You might be surprised to know that mortar makes up about 15 percent of the surface area of brickwork. So it’s not surprising that the colour and finish of mortar joints will affect your perception of a wall. Mortar finishes There are three common mortar finishes. The key to understanding mortar finishes is sunlight. A raked finish will cause a deep shadow to form in the mortar joint. This brings out the horizontal lines of the brickwork (and the vertical lines to a lesser extent). Rolled joints also create shadow lines, but much finer and more subtle. A flush joint doesn’t allow shadow lines to form, giving the wall a more unified look. Using a mortar colour to match the brick will take this a step further. The type of brick you select plays a part in which type of mortar joint would work best. Straight edged bricks with a slurry coat lend themselves to rolled joints where colour through bricks with rumbled edges are better with a raked joint. Using a raked joint on some bricks is likely to cause chipping, which may be unsightly. As such it is important to adhere to the recommendations on each page of this catalogue. Mortar Colour Mortar colour is a great way to add your own personal twist to your home and there are a multitude of options available to you. The most common mortar colour is mid-grey, often called “natural”. However mortar can be coloured, usually by adding powdered or liquid pigments to the mortar as it is being mixed by the bricklayer. Mortar coloured to match the brick will give the impression of a large area of colour, whereas a contrasting mortar colour will highlight the shape and colour of the bricks. Different mortar colours and joint finishes are shown in our selection centres, ask one of the team to explain the difference and why we have used different finishes with different bricks. It is important to discuss both mortar colour and joint finish with your builder or bricklayer to ensure you get the look you want. 4 Joint Finish Examples Rolled Flush Raked Mortar Colour Examples Example of Grey Mortar Example of Matching Mortar Example of White Mortar The above examples use the same brick which illustrates the effect mortar colour can have. Ten tips for selecting your bricks Colour Variation Monier and Austral Bricks clay products are made from naturally occurring materials that are kiln fired to lock in their colour and strength for life. The composition of the raw materials as well as the firing process may cause each run to differ. The resulting colour variation is inherent in the process and part of the appeal of natural products. The product ranges in this brochure and on our website give a general indication of colour for your preliminary selection. We recommend you also view current product samples and look at actual finished houses (we can supply a list) before making your final selection. Visit one of our selection centres where our experienced team can help with your choice. Blending Bricks Your bricklayer is a professional tradesman and is responsible for ensuring an even colour distribution. This process is called blending. Our bricks are partially blended during packing but this is not sufficient to guarantee a well blended wall. Blending on site is important whether the bricks are a single colour or multi-coloured. Blending instructions are on the side of most packs. Warranty Brick colours and textures are indicative only. We do no warrant that our bricks will match any sample or brochure. We recommend confirming availability and viewing the latest batch. All warranty claims against product must be made prior to the product being laid. Minor chipping and breakages can occur during delivery and we recommend using this product for cuts. • Bricks are a natural product and as such there will be some colour variation between and within batches. • Always blend from three pallets to ensure colour variation is evenly spread across the wall. • Do not lay wet bricks as an accurate indication of colour variation can not be gauged. Also, a wet brick may cause efflorescence to appear. • Bricks may have been transported up to seven times prior to them arriving on site. During this handling chipping may occur. This will not affect the performance of the brick in any way. • If you believe there is an issue please phone NZ Brick Distributors to organise a site meeting prior to laying. • The industry standard for viewing brickwork is from four metres back. Brickwork should be viewed as an assembly, not brick by brick. • Clean as you go. Acid wash is not recommended. However, if necessary contact NZ Brick Distributors first. • Always use the appropriate mortar joint type. This will limit chipping and ensure your bricks appearance is enhanced. • It is the responsibility of the bricklayer to ensure all bricks laid are of acceptable quality. • A brick laid is a brick accepted by the bricklayer and the owner. 5 Distinction Series Innovation, elegance, class. > Pearl > Caviar > Enzo > Phantom > Aston > Bentley Distinguish your home with Austral Bricks new Distinction Series. Here are a few simple guidelines to help us help you. • Deliver ahead of time - The first delivery should take place at least a day before work commences, otherwise time may be lost on site due to waiting. Give us a minimum 48 hours notice for all deliveries. • Help us find you - Give a clear street address. Tell us of any obstacles such as a narrow, dead-end or one-way street, weight restrictions and clearways. Please tell us beforehand if there is difficult site access or if the site is locked. • Placement of bricks - Please make sure we have any special placement instructions ahead of delivery. Ensure the ground (including underlying pipes) and any pavement traversed can sustain this weight. Our tractors need at least 2.5 m clear width and 2.6 m height clearance. • Inspect the delivery - Call NZ Brick Distributors immediately if there are any problems. Brick Cleaning and Maintenance One of the appealing factors of brickwork is it requires very little maintenance once installed. Your bricklayer is responsible for leaving your brickwork clean at the end of a job. There are some naturally occurring processes that can cause marks to appear on your brickwork once installed. These are easily remedied, generally without the use of harsh chemicals. The appearance of a brick building can be permanently spoilt by bad cleaning techniques or by the use of the incorrect cleaning agents. For this reason, it is important to ensure that the correct cleaning methods are utilised for the best results and to help reduce the associated problems with brick cleaning. Brickwork cleaning and maintenance advice is available on our website or contact one of our sales offices. 34 Design for a sustainable future In recent years there has been growing world-wide concern for energy conservation, the reduction of greenhouse gases and sustainability. In Australia, it is estimated that 39% of the end energy usage in domestic buildings is used for space heating and cooling (Australian Greenhouse Office 1999). Designing and constructing an energy efficient house has the potential to substantially reduce the amount of energy consumed. NZ Brick Distributors is part of an industry that has spent over 8 years researching this very subject. Research conducted at the University of Newcastle has proven that clay brick is a superior building material in producing thermally comfortable, energy efficient environments for people to live, work and play. This is because of the high thermal mass found in clay bricks. The key findings of the energy efficiency research to date are: • Lightweight buildings (timber, fibre cement, steel) are the worst performing buildings across all seasons. • Brick veneer construction performs better than lightweight. • Insulated cavity brick performs the best The research also reinforces that passive design features make all the difference, making the most of local climate conditions to create a more comfortable home while reducing your power bills. As well as being the best choice for thermally comfortable housing, clay bricks are the natural choice because: • Long life. Bricks stand the test of time. The evidence of that is all around us. • Low maintenance. Face brickwork doesn’t require special cleaning, painting or protective coatings to maintain its good looks. • Durable. Bricks are immensely strong, resisting fire and impact damage, and vermin or termite attack. • Healthy. Brickwork is inert, emitting virtually no chemicals or gases. • Reusable. Bricks are one of the few materials that can be reused (not just recycled) with their original qualities intact. A Sustainable Industry • Abundant. Bricks are made from clay and shale, our planet’s most abundant materials. • Low impact. Our raw material quarries are carefully controlled to minimise environmental impact and ensure the land is rehabilitated. • Energy efficient. Most brick production is highly automated, using clean natural gas in highly efficient kilns. • Conserving water. Where possible our plants recycle water and use rainwater collected on site. • Recycling waste. Clay waste and malformed bricks are recycled back into the manufacturing process. 35 New Zealand Selection Centres > Auckland 956 Great South Rd, Penrose, Auckland 1642 Tel. 09 579 0166 > Tauranga 15 Hynds Rd, Greerton, Tauranga 3142 Tel. 07 578 7117 > Hamilton 59 Vickery St, Te Rapa, Hamilton 3200 Tel. 07 958 4650 > Christchurch 1/99 Sawyers Arms Rd, Papanui, Christchurch 8052 Tel. 03 354 0200 > NZ Brick Distributors Ltd.
