Pinecrest Schools to Close Campuses
Due to Financial Troubles
By Heather Harbin
Officials with Pinecrest Schools announced on Monday that it will be
shutting the doors of all five campuses, one of which is located in Santa
Clarita, at the end of the school year due to financial troubles.
Pinecrest Schools, which has been operating for 65 years, operates
campuses in Woodland Hills, Thousand Oaks, Moorpark, Canyon
Country and Simi Valley.
Jeri Dye Lynch, president and CEO of Pinecrest, said the school has
“exhausted both our emotional and financial reserves trying to maintain
our school business” in a letter addressed to parents on Monday, reported
the Thousand Oaks Acorn.

Gas Company, City Officials Address
Local Concerns about Porter Ranch Leak
Thousands affected by ongoing leak,
including at least one SCV business owner
By Melissa Lampert
As the ongoing Porter Ranch gas leak continues to affect thousands—
including at least one business owner from the Santa Clarita Valley—City
Manager Ken Striplin recently addressed local concerns about the potential for a similar leak to occur at the natural gas storage facility located in
Santa Clarita.
In an effort to assess the safety of the Honor Rancho facility in Santa
Clarita, city officials have met with several representatives from Southern
California Gas Company, which owns both Honor Rancho and the site of
the ongoing leak in Porter Ranch, called Aliso Canyon.
“Although (the leak) is not here in the city, we were concerned with
making sure that they were aware of the concern that we have in making
sure that that doesn’t happen in Santa Clarita, and listening to the steps
that they’re taking, the steps they have taken over time to ensure that
(Honor Rancho) is a safe facility,” Striplin said at a Santa Clarita City
Council meeting held Jan. 12.
Striplin noted that Honor Rancho is “not even close” to the size of Aliso
Canyon, and that “it does not have the same problems.”

Pinecrest Schools Close Due
to Financial Troubles
“Thus, it is with a heavy heart that I must
now inform you that all Pinecrest Schools
will be permanently closed at the end of the
2015/2016 school year,” continued Lynch.
“As a result, we will not be giving out school
contracts for the upcoming school year or for
our summer program.”
She mentioned charter schools, alternative
learning centers and escalating costs as contributions to the private school’s downfall.
Lynch could not be reached for comment by
KHTS AM-1220 on Tuesday. School officials did not return requests for comment by
the Santa Clarita Gazette on Wednesday.
Janice Murray, host of the Non-Profit Spotlight Show on KHTS AM-1220, said she put
her children through Pinecrest from kindergarten until middle school.
“They have looked at everything, they have inspected—they
continue to inspect,” he said.
“I am a little shocked and surprised. It was a
perfect fit for my kids,” said Murray. “I feel
really bad for the teachers that will be out of
jobs. … It’s like I’m losing a part of my family. It was 12 years of my life.”
Honor Rancho is a naturally occurring underground storage
reservoir that has been in operation in Santa Clarita since
1976. The facility-- which is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days
a week --contains numerous wells, natural gas compressors, a
dehydration system, pipelines, various buildings and ancillary
equipment, according to a fact sheet provided by gas company
officials.
The first campus was opened in 1951 in
Van Nuys and served as a boarding school.
Pinecrest was the first private school in the
area, according to its website.
Article Source: www.hometownstation.com
The school serves students from kindergarten through eighth grade. Pinecrest served
over 6,000 students in 2009, according to the
private school’s website.
Gas Company, City Officials
Address Local Concerns about
Porter Ranch Leak
“Like Aliso Canyon, this facility is vital to the reliable delivery
of natural gas for Southern California,” said Stephanie Donovan, senior communications manager at Southern California
Gas Company. “The technology to monitor and operate underground gas storage field has developed steadily through the
years, and our facilities are at the forefront of safety controls
and procedures.”
Donovan added that the operation of each of the gas company’s four storage facilities, including Honor Rancho in Santa
Clarita, are “closed monitored for compliance” with the safety
standards of the California Public Utilities Commission, the
Division of Oil and Gas, the Occupational Safety and Health
Administration and local fire departments.
First discovered in October 2015, the ongoing Aliso Canyon
gas leak has resulted in “major amounts” of methane gas being
emitted into the atmosphere in Porter Ranch, according to a
proclamation issued by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. earlier
this month.

to the 2015 All-California Community College Football Team. Jones is COC’s
lone representative, having been named a Region III First-Team selection by
the California Community College Football Coaches Association.
Online registration is open for Canyon Country Little League’s spring
season. There are T-ball, baseball and softball programs for boys and
girls.
In 2015, the Valencia High School graduate led the Cougars with 68 receptions, 1,240 receiving yards and six touchdowns, while averaging 18.2 yards per
catch.
You can choose walk-in registration on January 24 from 12 noon-3 p.m.
or January 28 from 5-8 p.m at Jersey Mike’s in its new location near Big
5 Sporting Goods, 19120 Soledad Canyon Rd. in Canyon Country.
Additionally, his average of 124 receiving yards per game in 2015 was the top
mark in the state.
Player tryouts/assessments will be held Saturday, Jan. 23 at the Canyon
Country Little League Field #3. The fields are located at 16054 Sierra
Hwy in Canyon Country.
In his first year with the Cougars, Jones turned in a string of spectacular performances, including six games in which he gained more than 100 yards receiving. In four of those games he topped 150 receiving yards.
Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. for 8- to 10-year-olds. The on field assessments begin at 9 a.m.
During a two-game stretch in October, Jones caught 19 passes for 363 receiving
yards, including a touchdown in COC’s 42-24 win at Allan Hancock College
on Oct. 24. He was subsequently named the Southern California Football Association (SCFA) Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the
Bulldogs.
Check-in begins at 10 a.m. for 11- to 12-year-olds. The on field assessments begin at 10:30 a.m.
Jones was also a unanimous selection to the 2015 Southern California Football

The assessments are used to evaluate the skill levels of the players in
order to balance the teams. Players should come in baseball attire and
gloves are mandatory. There are extra bats and helmets for players who
do not bring them.
The All-California Community College Football Team is selected by the
California Community College Football Coaches Association (CCCFCA), in
conjunction with the JC Athletic Bureau.
Check-in begins at 11:30 a.m. for 13- to 15-year-olds. The on field assessments begin at 12 Noon.

Soroptimist ‘Dream It, Be It’ Conference for Girls
The local Soroptimist International clubs teamed up to host the first
“Dream It, Be It: Career Support for Girls” conference at the College of
the Canyons University Center next month.
Mostly designed for girls in secondary school who face obstacles to their
future success, the curriculum at the one-day event places an emphasis on
goal creation and career planning. Through this new global program, local
members of both Soroptimist International of Greater Santa Clarita Valley
and Soroptimist International of Santa Clarita Valley seek to provide girls
with access to professional role models, career education and resources to
live their dreams.
“Because we don’t expect all girls will know what they want to do for the
rest of their lives and we also know that plans change, the skills developed
through the curriculum can be applied to any goals girls identify throughout their education and careers,” said Vanessa Wilk, co-chair of the event
with Linda Davies and Stephanie Sewell.
The seven sessions at the February 20 conference will include:
•Discovering Your Dreams
•Exploring Careers
•Creating Achievable Goals
•Rising Above Obstacles
•Turning Failure into Success
•Balancing Your Stress
•Putting Dreams into Action
Sponsored by College of the Canyons, the event organizers expect to see at
least 100 teenagers at the event, which is open to girls age 14-17 years old.
“I can’t think of a better place to encourage girls to go to school,” said
Wilk.
The women planning the conference have been reaching out to guidance
counselors at the local high schools to specifically invite girls who would
benefit most from the program. Participants will explore options for college, as well as technical career paths in breakout sessions. One of the
activities will allow attendees to create vision boards.
Speakers will include Kim Goldman from the SCV Youth Project, Linda
Davies from the Santa Clarita Valley Domestic Violence Center and Sue
Reynolds from NewMarket Careers. Jersey Mike’s is providing lunches for
the girls.
Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the conference runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
at the Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center, at 26455 Rockwell
Canyon Road. A registration form is available online and can be emailed.
Both the girls attending and their parents need to sign the forms. For more
information, email [email protected].

OPINION
Lean to the Left
High Drama from the Right
By Sylvia Turner
Though it was the Democrats who held a debate recently, the Republican
Party’s campaign has actually been giving us a stage show.
First of all, it’s so sad for Ben Carson’s staff in that terrible accident. Maybe
while he’s taking some time off he can see that it ought to be permanent.
At 10 percent, it’s just not meant to be.
Oh boy, what’s a week without a cringe-worthy Trump statement. I don’t
know what his handlers are thinking sending him into a Christian school
… and letting him speak. I hear the crowd shouted at him when he pronounced a book in the Bible “Two Corinthians” instead of “First Corinthians.”
Don’t worry. Sarah Palin to the rescue!?! Eeek – you can’t buy press that
bad. Maybe she can do Bible quizzes with him to get him better equipped
for visits like that one.
Sen. John McCain isn’t getting anywhere near that, wisely.
It was stated this way: “Senator McCain has great respect and appreciation
for Governor Palin,” a senior aide told NBC News. “As he has said since
Senator [Lindsey] Graham exited the race, he will not be taking sides and
endorsing a primary candidate at this point in the race.”
The Democratic debate was interesting to watch. They were all three well-
spoken, actually. And they have really good ideas. Hillary looked the most
presidential, because she knows how to navigate foreign policy and the
serious issues that confront the Oval Office.
It’s funny to see who folks sell out to. A popular conservative email blast
gets sponsored by a crazy guy with videos about “Atheist scientists are
enraged by this Bible passage.” Then he hawks his “cure all” stuff. I’ve got
two words: snake oil.
In one of those conservative emails, amusing comments were made by
Republican strategists about President Obama’s State of the Union address.
South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley ran her official response past House
Speaker Paul Ryan, but she actually pleased the Obama camp with her
underlying attacks of Donald Trump. So says conservative Phyllis Schlafly,
anyway.
“With Ryan’s blessing, Haley used her national platform to slam the ‘angriest voices’ in the presidential campaign and disavow the Republican frontrunner’s popular call for a temporary pause in Muslim immigration,” said
Schlafly. “She seemed to be responding more to Trump than Obama, so it’s
no wonder that her speech was praised by Obama’s press secretary and the
White House chief of staff.”
It may be more entertaining watching Republicans duke it out than following the presidential election.

What Your Lawn
Says About You
(Satire)
City Council Members
Give Themselves a Payraise?
By Sarah Farnell
Are you having trouble figuring out those
new neighbors? Do you enjoy silently
judging people for reasons you do not
understand? Do you like to psychoanalyze
yourself to a point that hinders both your
professional and personal lives? Either
way, there is a lot you can tell about a
person by the type of turf they decide
to show the world. Since living in Santa
Clarita requires everyone to have at least
some type of lawn, the array of different
lawns is endless, so here is a quick guide
to help you pinpoint the flaws in others.
1. The Toupee
This little guy tries to pass for a lawn —
but it is not a lawn. It covers up to threequarters of the dirt, but it is patchy and
pathetic. At this point, it would be better
just to mow it all down and get it over
with, but these people refuse to let go of
that once youthful, flowing beauty. No
matter what they do, that stuff just doesn’t
grow back. These neighbors are definitely
hiding something big — it’s probably a
criminal record.
2. The Uncanny Freudian Foliage
Wow, that lawn looks good. Too good.
And you are right. These people have the
lawn of lifetime, but their cars never seem
to have hard water spots from the morning
sprinklers. Those clever devils had a fake
lawn put in to avoid the hassle of a real
lawn — and they thought you wouldn’t
notice. This is considered foul play. Your
neighbors are definitely cheating on their
taxes.
3. Dang it, Dennis
Jeez Dennis, do you do anything else
besides take care of that stupid lawn? The
answer is no. Dennis is retired, and the
only thing he hasn’t retired is his love for
lawn care. I mean, give it a rest, Dennis! It
doesn’t take a genius to figure out that you
spent all of your grandchildren’s inheritance on World War II memorabilia and
that weird, old car.
4. Corpse Blade
Unlike the movie that received an 83
percent on Rotten Tomatoes, this lawn
was not directed by Tim Burton. Most of
the time, foreclosures sport this look due
to the lack of overall maintenance; but,
more commonly, these houses belong to
the older folks. Look through the windows
every once in a while to make sure that
Ruth didn’t kick the bucket, because her
family sure won’t. I bet Ruth keeps her ferret’s ashes in an empty prune juice can.
5. The Dirty Hippie
Otherwise known as the “dirty communist
hippie,” these people make a conscious
decision to stop bathing their bodies and
their lawns for the sake of the drought.
Sometimes it can be hard to tell the difference between the Dirty Hippie and the
Corpse Blade, but if they drive a Prius
or wear a shirt that says “I’m a stinking
liberal,” they are most likely a communist
hippie. These neighbors are lying about
the number of cats that are living with
them, so look out for signs of hoarding.
By Alan Ferdman
Letter to the Editor
I have always thought it curious, elected officials
have the authority to set their own salary. Often we
see that happen when officials are not in an election cycle year. Looking back at 2013, the last time our council took on
this issue, Bob Kellar voted to increase council members’ salaries, while
TimBen Boydston voted against it. This time, in 2016, both Kellar and
Boydston voted no. What is the difference? Both council members are
up for election this year. Councilman Boydston has been consistent in
voting no on pay increases, while Bob Kellar voted no only in the year
he was up for election.
In addition, my position is: each city council member is elected by
the public and should be treated equally, which includes compensation. Currently included is direct salary, retirement benefits and health
care benefits. On November 13, 2012, Kellar, Weste, McLean and
Ferry voted to limit benefits to new council members, while exempting
themselves. When elected officials start using the power of their office
to grant themselves specific benefits, and at the same time limit the
benefits of other council members, it is an abuse of power.
Look at an elected official’s voting record and it says it all.
I am running for a seat on the city council this year and, if elected
under the current system, will receive the lowest benefit level. But I am
not running to get a salary. I am running to serve the public and make
decisions without bias or personal favor.

It Was Almost Time:
I’ve been putting off ranting about the Laemmle Theatre project in Newhall
for some reason, but when I saw the semi-daily paper’s editorial piece, Laemmle
Project Good for City, I decided to put my two cents in. But then I saw what they
wrote in another opinion piece regarding the City Council voting themselves a
raise (a whole other subject).
9
*I wish Donald Trump was as well spoken as his two oldest sons are; they are
really articulate.
*Why in the Democratic debate were there no questions regarding the $19
trillion debt, national security and Bill Clinton’s sexual goings on? Why ask why?
Digressing:
I decided to digress on the Laemmle thing, as this issue will probably go on and
on like the billboard and chloride debacles did. Anyway, I know it’s a newspaper
tradition to not put names or faces to their editorial page pieces and the semidaily paper is no exception. I guess it bugs me, because it’s easy to shove your
thoughts out when no one knows who is writing it.
The Day the Music Died:
I was almost done with this week’s rant when I got word of Glenn Frey’s death.
Being a huge Eagles fan since buying their first record in 1972, I was stunned. It
brought me back to 1977, when an older co-worker of mine was devastated the
day Elvis Presley died. I remember thinking, “Come on, man. What’s the big
deal?” Now I know what the big deal was.
Councilman Dante Acosta is a friend of mine, but when I feel he is wrong about
something, as uncomfortable as it is for me, I call him out on it. If the opinion
pieces in The Gazette were just an Our View from The Gazette’s Editorial Board, I
could throw anything I wanted out to our readers and hide in my office. Instead,
I put my name and ugly mug out there for all to see and throw darts at.
The Eagles, along with Glenn Fry and Don Henley’s solo work, have been my
go-to music for 44 years. I saw them in concert seven or eight times, last seeing
the Eagles at the Staples Center just a few years ago. Some can relate, some
can’t, to what one’s favorite artist(s) can do for your soul for so many years.
With that, I’m calling bull hide (see Letter to Ranter) on whoever wrote in the
semi-daily paper’s opinion piece referring to Acosta as someone “who is doubledipping in the pockets of taxpayers by also collecting compensation from the payroll of
Congressman Steve Knight in his role as district representative.”
That is a load of natural gas stench. Where I come from, double dipping refers to
someone getting some sort of illegal extra benefit from the government. Dante
Acosta is not doing anything illegal or unethical, and I know he works hard at
both jobs and deserves whatever money he earns. While not perfect (who is?)
– and I have had my disagreements with him – in my opinion, he is a man of
integrity who does not deserve that kind of back-handed slam by a no-face, noname writer(s).
The Eagles’ longtime manager, Irving Azoff was quoted about Frey after his
death, “Glenn was as astute in business as he was in music. He wasn’t just an incredible
writer, singer and musician. I don’t know of a better family man or father”. That
reminded me of 1975 when the Eagles played in Tucson. I was in the rafters,
but an attractive female friend I knew from high school was a huge Eagles
fan and was sitting in the front row. After the show one of the crew members
approached her and said Glenn had noticed her and asked if she wanted to go
back to the hotel with the band for a party. She reluctantly went with another
friend, assuming she would have to turn down Frey’s invitation to go up to his
room. It never happened. She said all the band members, especially Frey, were
considerate, courteous and at the end of the night thanked them for coming and
wished them the best.
Random Rants:
*The headline read: Progress through Diplomacy. It was with a photo of Obama
and the Iranian president (not together). Maybe it’s just me, but how can it be
true diplomacy when we are giving them a ton of money and their president
leads large crowds in chants of DEATH to America?
When Frey moved to L.A. in the late ‘60s, he lived a floor above Jackson
Browne. He helped Browne finish the song “Take It Easy” and they became lifelong friends. Later, Jackson would write a song about someone close to him who
had died. One of the lines was: I don’t know what happens when people die, I can’t
seem to grasp it as hard as I try. It’s like a song playing right in my ear; I can’t sing it, but
I can’t help but listening. I bet Jackson Browne and millions of Glenn Frey’s fans,
are revisiting those lyrics today.
*I’m thinking that England’s parliament is just as screwed up as the United
States Congress. They spent three hours on Monday debating whether to allow
Donald Trump into their country.
Letter to the Ranter:
Dear Doug,
*I love the NFL, but hate it when each time a guy makes a fairly routine play
he dances around like a fool. I say act like you’ve done it before. I long for the
days when a guy made a good tackle and humbly waited for his teammates to
celebrate him. Those days won’t be back in my lifetime!
*Finally, a light at the end of the tunnel. It is just under a year until a new
president is sworn in. If the new president is named Clinton, Sanders, or even
Biden, the light will be a train carrying huge amounts of new debt coming at us,
ready to blow everything up!
*Is it just a coincidence that right after Obama said in the “State of his Head”
address that the economy is doing just fine, that the stock market nose-dived, and
Macy’s and Wal-Mart announced numerous store closings?
*It seems many us have forgotten that the Obama Administration had $4.5
trillion printed (might as well call it “Monopoly money”) and dumped it into
Wall Street for an artificial pump-up (called quantitative easing). Now it looks
like their Wall Street – House of Cards could come crashing down.
Happy New Year! I read your column sometimes and I think the Santa Clarita Gazette
has some well-written articles. The depth of your writing and thoughts shows great
intelligence. There are many other great qualities of your work I could also list.
However, the one thing I would mention is do you have to use such crude word pictures
about human and animal excretion? It comes like someone’s throwing a hammer into
my thoughts. It also reduces one’s dignity and power (the writer’s) by relating himself to
early childhood again. Also swearing—does it make the author more powerful? I’m sure a
“rant” takes a high quantity of adrenaline but do we want our society to degenerate to the
level of Burger King commercials—some years past? Even now? The worst manners ever
exhibited on TV commercials? The Bible (New Testament) says we should avoid coarse
talking and crude jesting. Thanks for reading my letter.
Sincerely,
Donna L.
P.S. I hope I didn’t offend you—your column is brilliant!
*Is it just a coincidence that several Americans went missing in Iraq a day after
the U.S. traded prisoners with Iran? Could it be the bad guys saw it’s easy to get
their people back by giving ours back?

*Did you see the way Hillary
reacted to the question about her
relationship with Putin during the
debate? Oh, my Gosh, it looked
like she was remembering some
sort of non-diplomatic encounter
she had with him!
*Have you ever watched Judge
Jeannine’s (not Judge Judy’s) show
on “Fox News”? The woman is an
absolute political pundit pistol. She
gives the best political monologues
on television. The Judge should
really have her own nightly show.
Thank you for taking the time to write. I apologize that some of my written
words rub you the wrong way. When writing the rant I try and do it as a
conversational piece and, in doing so, I tend to use language that is emotionally
charged as a result of my frustrations. Because of the desire to communicate
those frustrations to the readers, I find myself using semi off-color words. I do
want you to know the language used by other folks in conversations I have with
them regarding political matters during the course of a week make my words
look like an angel’s. Truth be told, I don’t use the types of words they do (most
of the time). I hope that gets me off the hook a little bit. (-:
P.S. I am not offended whatsoever; please write again.
Sincerely,
Doug

be a disaster as president, the man
is one good, passionate speaker.

SCV Education Foundation
‘Bringing the Community Together to Support Excellence in Education’
The SCV Education Foundation is a group of educational leaders, business
partners and volunteers with a goal of providing outstanding public schools
for the children of the Santa Clarita Valley.
Local school districts supported by the SCV Education Foundation include
Castaic Union, Newhall, Saugus Union, Sulphur Springs and William S.
Hart.
“We work together with the many
facets of our community to bridge the
gap that has been created by lack of
state and national funding of our local
public schools,” organization officials
said in a statement on the foundation’s
website. “Every year, we grow stronger
in our ability to fill the needs of our
students and teachers through our
programs and events that promote
educational success.”
Based on the belief that literacy is “fundamental” for both educational and
life skills success, the foundation’s volunteer-based reading programs help
struggling readers improve their literacy and provide students with low
access to books outside of school with a different set of books to read each
week.
Every year, local teachers also receive thousands of dollars in materials
for classroom, school and district-wide programs,
particularly in the areas of language arts, science,
technology, art and music.
More than a dozen local teachers received
scholarships for the 2014/2015 school year last
year, providing them with the opportunity to
reach more than 6,000 SCV students, according to
officials.
Foundation officials primarily carry
out their mission in three ways: by
implementing reading programs to
improve literacy, providing grants to
teachers and awarding scholarships
to graduating Hart District seniors who are pursuing a four-year degree in
education.
Community members can help support the mission
of the SCV Education Foundation by participating
in the 24th annual Principal for a Day event, set for
Feb. 5. The fundraiser gives participants the chance
to learn first-hand about the challenges and rewards
of today’s public schools, and the roles principals
and administrators play in education at a variety of
SCV schools.

Gas Company, City Officials Address
Local Concerns about Porter Ranch Leak
While state health officials have determined there should be no “lasting
health impacts” as a result of the leak, thousands of area residents have
been forced to relocate due to physiological responses like nausea and
headaches, according to California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) officials.

try to get customers in the store.”
Other Porter Ranch business owners significantly impacted by the ongoing leak include a pharmacist who reported many of his customers have
transferred their prescriptions out of the area, and the owner of a nail salon
who said the majority of the salon’s
clientele have relocated, according to

“They’re offering relocation expenses

It’s a challenge, and we’re wondering
what we can do to get some relief

A portion of Brown’s proclamation is

a report assessing natural gas storage

Driver in Fatal Crash Facing DUI, Manslaughter Charges
The driver in a single-vehicle traffic collision that left one dead and two
critically injured Saturday is facing felony charges of driving under the
influence with gross negligence and vehicular manslaughter, according
to arrest documents.
Michael Palazzola, 24, of Agua Dulce, was arrested about an hour after
Saturday’s crash, which occurred on Stevenson Ranch Parkway, north
of Pico Canyon Road, in Stevenson Ranch.
Palazzola was allegedly driving a 2011 Ford Fiesta “at an unsafe speed”
at approximately 2:10 a.m. when the vehicle struck a concrete curb and
continued off the roadway, according to a California Highway Patrol
news release.
By Melissa Lampert
Steven R. Kirk, 22, of Agua Dulce; Nicole Nogosek, 21, of Stevenson
Ranch; and Chandler Richter, 21, of Saugus.
Kirk was pronounced dead at the scene. Nogosek and Richter sustained
major injuries in the crash, while Palazzola sustained minor injuries.
Palazzola was arrested by CHP officers at 3:17 a.m. and released on
bond shortly before 5 p.m. the same day. His bail amount was set at
$200,000, according to arrest documents.
While alcohol is suspected to be a factor in the collision, its cause
remains under investigation.
The vehicle then “collided with a large boulder, overturned and struck a
tree, then came to rest on its wheels,” the news release stated.
Palazzola was scheduled to appear at San Fernando Superior Court
Wednesday. No further information regarding the appearance was
available as of press time.
There were three passengers in the vehicle at the time of the crash:

Valencia.
Girls Soccer
The Valencia Girls Soccer team is off to an early lead in the Foothill
League standings.
It is not so surprising that Golden Valley is off to a hot start. What
is surprising is that Valencia might be the worst team in the Foothill
League.
Valencia shut out Saugus, 1-0, and is 2-0-0 in league play.
Bryce Tyler-St. Clair led Golden Valley with 21 points. He is emerging
as one of the best players in the Foothill League. Milan Taylor is a force
in the paint and scored 14 points against Valencia.

West Ranch, 1-1.
Golden Valley improved to 13-6 overall.
Sophie Mendell scored for Hart. Erin Meottel scored for West Ranch.
Zach Hawkins led Valencia with 14 points. The Vikings dropped to 5-12

Hart is 1-0-1 in league. West Ranch is 0-1-1.
In another Foothill League surprise, West Ranch and Saugus needed
overtime to decide the outcome of their second league game.
Lauren Madero scored the lone goal in the game.
The Canyon girls put on a scoring clinic against Golden Valley, winning 5-1. Alyssa Aguilar scored a hat trick. Claudia McKail scored for
Canyon.
West Ranch won, 72-68, but Saugus played the kind of gritty game that
should soon pay dividends.
The Canyon girls won their first league game of the season and are
1-1-0. The Golden Valley girls lost their first game of the season and are
1-1-0.
Saugus erased a 28-point halftime deficit to send the game into overtime. But West Ranch outscored Saugus 10-6 in the extra period to win
the game.
Boys Soccer
Zach Phipps was the hero for Saugus. He hit a 3-pointer as time expired in regulation to tie the score, 62-62. He scored 20 points, 18 in the
second half.
Austin Galuppo paced West Ranch with 33 points and hit four 3-pointers. West Ranch improved to 12-6 and 2-0 in league.

The NFL is down to its final four. The Arizona Cardinals and the
Carolina Panthers are playing in the NFC Championship game. The
Denver Broncos and New England Patriots are in the AFC Championship game.
The Canyon and Valencia girls won big. The Saugus girls made a case
for Foothill League championship contender. Canyon easily handled
Hart, 75-34, to improve to 2-0 in the Foothill League. Four players from
Canyon scored in double figures.
Talia Taufassau led Canyon with 19 points. Angie Puno added 16.
Canyon is 14-4 overall.

Golden Valley dropped to 5-10 overall and 0-2 in league.
The hype leading up to the conference championships will all be placed
on the Peyton Manning vs. Tom Brady match-up. It will be a Super
Bowl in its own right.
But no matter who wins, the team from the NFC should be the favorite
in the real Super Bowl.

Team from State Assembly Takes
Action in Aliso Canyon Gas Leak
A bi-partisan effort is underway in the California State Assembly to
address the Aliso Canyon storage facility leak, a discovery last October
that methane gas was being released in the Porter Ranch area, affecting
residents. Assemblyman Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita) coauthored a set
of bills with Senator Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills) and Senator Ben
Allen (D-Santa Monica) to ensure accountability, protect public health
and safety and implement practices to prevent another disaster like the
leak at the Aliso Canyon storage facility.
“Too many Porter Ranch families have been displaced and too many
parents have concern for their children’s health and potential long-term
risk,” said Wilk, an assemblyman in the 38th District, which includes
Santa Clarita. “It is our responsibility to make sure that once the leak
is stopped, the cause is identified and new protocols are put in place to
ensure no other community has to endure what Porter Ranch residents
are experiencing.”
SB 886 will place an immediate moratorium on any new injections of
natural gas or any use of vintage wells at the Aliso Canyon facility until
it is determined by multiple agencies and outside experts that it no longer poses a risk to public health or safety. This is an urgency measure
and will take effect immediately.
SB 887 will strengthen current laws to increase inspections on gas storage facilities. This measure will require more oversight and implement
a framework to prevent future disasters.
Scott Wilk (R-Santa Clarita)
SB 888 will protect ratepayers from absorbing any costs associated
with the leak. This measure will also designate the California Office of
Emergency Services as the lead agency for any future leaks similar to
Aliso Canyon.
The assemblyman will be in attendance at Thursday’s hearing about the
Aliso Canyon gas leak. The Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committee for an Oversight Hearing on the Aliso Canyon Gas Leak will
meet at Granada Hills Charter High School at 10535 Zelzah Ave. on
Jan. 21, 2016 at 5 p.m. The hearing will feature testimony from Southern California Gas Company, California Public Utilities Commission
and the California Department of Conservation as well as public comment.
Because thousands of residents in the Porter Ranch community have
had to relocate due to the hazardous situation, the hearing will give
members of the committee an update on the leak and the opportunity
to receive feedback from members of the community.
Wilk said, “My top priority is to preserve the health and safety of my
constituents and to ensure that ratepayers do not foot the bill for the
mismanagement of the facility.”
Assemblyman Wilk represents the 38th Assembly District, which encompasses
Simi Valley, the northwestern section of the San Fernando Valley and most of
the Santa Clarita Valley.
Senator Fran Pavley (D-Agoura Hills)
‘Peter Pan’ Does Double Time in SCV
The Santa Clarita Valley has numerous opportunities to see the timeless classic “Peter

Canyon Theatre Guild will present “Peter Pan the Musical,” an adaptation by Piers
Chater Robinson. It is an out-of-the-ordinary production of the old favorite, featuring
songs, flying scenes and expansive sets. From the original British musical adaptation
of the book, it stays close to the original story. It is a family show for all ages.
“I mean, this is a story where a child’s imaginary friend actually flies through the window and comes to visit!” says Jackie Mellor Guin, director of the show at CTG.

What is the Difference
Between Robbery and Burglary?
17
by Robin Sandoval
An attempted burglary of the Apple Store at Valencia Town Center is alleged
to have occurred on Saturday afternoon. According to reports, five males
attempted to burglarize the Apple Store, but ended up aborting their mission
before entering. Once law enforcement was tipped-off, deputies from the Santa
Clarita Sheriff ’s Station, right down the street, arrived in force and immediately began a hunt for the suspects. Unfortunately, despite their efforts, the
suspects scattered once the deputies’ presence was known. They remain at
large. The men are suspected of committing similar robberies at Apple Stores
in Glendale and Ventura.
Now, you may realize that two of those examples are
almost exactly the same. So what, then, is the difference
between burglary and robbery? Robbery requires that an item be stolen (or
that someone attempts to steal) from an individual’s immediate presence. So, if a
person is in his home when it’s broken into, his possessions would be considered to be in his immediate presence, because the owner of the possessions are
present; thus, robbery would be charged. If the owner of the home is away and
the television is stolen, then the property is not in the victim’s immediate presence and the charge would likely be burglary.
The case above brings up an interesting and often misunderstood aspect of the
law, namely the difference between burglaries and robberies. Many believe that
burglary and robbery are two different words used to describe the same thing,
much like chocolate and happiness. However, they are actually two different
crimes altogether.
So, why are these five men being charged with attempted burglary and not
attempted robbery? After all, the employees were at the store when the alleged
crime was to take place, right? It’s because the men never entered the store. Burglary requires that an individual “enters a room, structure or locked vehicle.”
Robbery requires that an individual take something from the owner’s immediate
presence.
Robbery is covered under California Penal Code 211 PC and is described as
taking property from someone’s person or immediate presence that belongs to
someone else against their will. For example, if someone were to break into a
home while the residents were sleeping and steal their television, that person
may be charged with robbery. Another example of robbery would be if, after
getting caught committing petty theft, the would-be thief threatened to harm
the owner of the property in an attempt to escape.
Burglary, on the other hand, is covered under California Penal Code 459 PC
and is described as entering a room, structure or locked vehicle with the intent
to commit a felony once inside. Some examples of burglary are: entering a
department store with the intent of stealing pricey electronics, or entering a
home with the intent of stealing the television.
Robbery is always a felony in California Law, while burglary can be either
a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the circumstances of the crime.
Because the men are being charged with attempted burglary, they stand some
chance of incurring misdemeanor penalties if caught and convicted. However,
if they are also tied to the other two Apple Store robberies, it might not matter.

On Saturday, February 27, 2016 from 9 a.m.-1 p.m., residents are invited to
bring unwanted containers from paint products to the local PaintCare Paint

The free event allows residents and businesses to safely and securely
dispose of most types of paint, stain and varnish. Residents should bring

following items only: house paint and primers (latex or oil-based), stains,
deck and concrete sealers, and clear finishes (e.g. varnishes, shellac).
Businesses that generate fewer than 220 pounds (approximately 20-30
gallons) of hazardous waste per month may bring any amount of latex
or oil-based paint. Businesses that generate more than 220 pounds of
hazardous waste per month may bring any amount of latex paint, but may
not bring oil-based paint to this event.
Items not eligible for disposal at the event include:
• Leaking, unlabeled or empty containers
• Aerosol spray paints

Jack E. Coe
Shirley Bessette
Jack E. Coe died in Lindale, Texas on November 16, 2015 from cancer. He was a resident of Newhall, Calif. for more than 35 years.
Shirley Bessette of Santa Clarita passed away on Christmas Day,
December 25, 2015.
Jack was born in Buffalo, N.Y. on July 23, 1938 to parents Amos Jack
and Mildred L. Coe. He was a graduate of Amherst High School in
Amherst, N.Y. and attended the U.S. Maritime Academy in Kings
Point, N.Y. He was married to Waunetia and had a son, William
Bradford, both of whom preceded him in death.
Her family members said, “The Lord loved Shirley Bessette so much
that He took her home on His birthday, Christmas Day, 2015, her
favorite holiday. What an amazing party in heaven it must have been
for Shirley’s entrance.”
Jack was a veteran of the United States Army, and he worked for
Lockheed Aircraft for many years prior to retiring. After retirement,
he worked with many disadvantaged children, focusing on activities
involving horse therapy. Jack also enjoyed time with family, boating,
fishing and flying.
He is survived by his brother and sister, Tom Coe and Joan Frary;
his nephews, Brian Michaels and Kevin Frary; and two nieces, Jaime
Chambers and Lindsay Coe.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at
2:30 p.m. at Eternal Valley Memorial Park in Newhall, Calif. The
community is welcome to attend in helping the family celebrate Jack’s
life.
Shirley met her husband, Bill, at a diner in Missouri at the age of
15, and married him soon afterwards. Bill was serving in the United
States Air Force at the time. She later became a vascular surgical
technician for Kaiser Permanente Hospital in the San Fernando
Valley.
She is survived by her four children, Terry, Liz, Candie, and Bill;
and five grandchildren, Kyle, Elizabeth, Kellie, Cole and Devon; as
well as two great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Reece. They all will
dearly miss her wisdom and guidance.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016 in the Chapel
of the Hills at Eternal Valley Memorial Park, 23287 Sierra Highway,
Newhall, CA 91321. A reception will immediately follow on site.
Canyon High School Hosts
‘Every 15 Minutes’ Program
The two-day program “Every 15 Minutes” was held Wednesday and Thursday for students in the junior and senior classes at Canyon
High School. The dramatic, emotional bi-annual program attempts to communicate the impact of drinking and driving through interactive role playing. Students are selected to be a part of reenactments that include a graphic demonstration of a traffic crash site. Local
emergency responders report to the scene, as well as a coroner, members of public works and a tow truck company.

Charter School to Host
Information Meeting
Parents of children in middle school through high school age are invited to
attend an informational event at SCVi Charter School in Castaic.
“We have an evening of excellent programming lined up to provide a wealth
of valuable information for high school learners and their parents, as well as
families with learners about to begin high school in the next year or two,” said
Matt Watson, upper school director for SCVi, a tuition-free charter school
and the founding campus of iLEAD Schools. “All of these events are not only
open to SCVi families, but we are excited to extend this invitation to the entire
community.”
The event’s program will include:
•SCViUpperSchoolOverview–AnSCVicollegecounselorwilldiscussthe
school’s project-based learning and provide information about the colleges that
have accepted graduates from SCVi’s first two graduating classes. The evening
will also offer information on SCVi high school learners’ options, including
the International Baccalaureate program, arts and literature opportunities,
sports programs, internships, and the ability to take classes at College of the
Canyons. It begins at 6 p.m. in the Shakespeare Theatre.
“Our college prep goes beyond ‘getting in’ to college, and actually prepares
learners to know how to be successful in college,” Watson said. “Our learners
also benefit greatly from having award-winning college expert Anne Cochran
on our team. When you combine an expert team with the more personalized
attention of a smaller-school environment, it really pays dividends for the
students.”
•InnovationsStudios–Initspilotyear,InnovationsStudiosisahybridlearning program offered to learners in 9th-12th grade who are ready to take full
control of their own education. It includes options such as internships, online
learning, workshops, peer collaboration, independent study, and the supervised design of individual projects by the learners themselves.
•InternationalTravelOpportunitiesforEnrolledStudents–Learnerscurrently
enrolled at SCVi and their families will have the chance to learn about opportunities for 9th-12th grade students to travel internationally as part of a short
term exchange program in the spring. The talk will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the
Shakespeare Theatre.

‘Taxes and the Artist’ Discussion
at Artist Development Series
The City of Santa Clarita invites local artists, performers and writers to
attend a free New Heights: Artist Development Series discussion at 7 p.m.
on Wednesday, January 27, 2016 in the Century Room at Santa Clarita City
Hall, located at 23920 Valencia Boulevard.
The discussion, “Taxes and the Artist,” will provide artists with the nuts and
bolts of how artists should properly navigate the tax system. Expert Abe
Carnow, CPA, will lead the discussion and touch on a plethora of questions,
including: What can artists write off as expenses? How do artists determine
what taxes to pay? What steps do artists need to take to be working within
the law most effectively?
Carnow focuses on both tax compliance, filing the correct forms, and tax
controversy, involving audit and collection matters. Carnow started his career
with the IRS, working in the audit and appeals division from 1974 to 1990
and has since maintained his own CPA practice. Carnow teaches nationwide
for Gear Up Tax Seminars, teaching tax courses to other professionals in
taxation.
The New Heights: Artist Development Series is an initiative driven by
the Santa Clarita City Council and Arts Commission. The programs are
designed to empower artists, performers and arts organization representatives
with valuable tools to expand their knowledge and increase opportunities for
success.
For more information about the New Heights: Artist Development Series
contact the City’s Arts and Events Supervisor, Jeff Barber, at (661) 250-3787
or [email protected]. Additional information about this workshop
and future events can be found by visiting arts.santa-clarita.com/newheights.
Manufacturing Job Fair at
College of the Canyons
Interview and Resume Workshops Held Prior to Event
•LookingForwardtoCollege:WhatNeedstoHappenBetweenNowand
Sept. 1 – Beginning at 7 pm in the Etta James room at SCVi, college planning
expert Anne Cochran will provide a presentation for 11th grade learners and
parents to help guide them through the very important junior year of high
school, when many key actions need to be taken and deadlines need to be met
in preparation for the transition from high school to college. The presentation
begins 7 at p.m. in the Etta James Room.
Residents seeking jobs in areas related to manufacturing are urged to attend an
upcoming job fair. Hosted by the Santa Clarita WorkSource Center/America’s
Job Center of California in Santa Clarita, employers will be available at the

held at the College of the Canyons University Center in the first floor lobby
area, located at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road in Valencia.
“The college planning process starts sooner than people think, and it’s important for parents to be engaged in the process,” said Cochran, a frequent speaker
at professional college conferences, including the College Board’s Destination
Equity 2014 Conference. “This session will provide a wealth of valuable information to help families successfully plan their learners’ college journeys.”
Confirmed employers looking to fill entry, middle and upper level opportunities
include: Bocchi Laboratories, Boston Scientific, Canyon Plastics, Dapro
Rubber, Inc., Donaldson Company, Inc., HobbyTron/World Tech Toys,
National Glass, Rotating Precision Mechanism, Inc. and Superior Group.
Staffing firms, Aerotek and Exact Staff, will also be at the Job Fair. Additional
employers may be added.
SCVi, located at 28060 Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic, offers project-based
K-12 curriculum and student-led assessment with global and culturally diverse
influences. The tuition-free charter school emphasizes an inquiry-based,
learner-centered approach to education. SCVi’s primary goal is to help learners lead a successful and fulfilled life while contributing to the world around
them. More information about SCVi and iLEAD Schools is available at www.
ileadschools.org.
Professional attire and resumes are highly recommended. For those interested,
