Komen ‘ Race for the Cure.’ The race began at 8 a.m. with the runners starting off. Shortly after, those that chose to walk made their way across the entrance point and labored toward the finish line. The look of the participants was as varied as were their stories. I couldn’t stop crying, but it’s been really awesome.” Families, couples and clusters of individuals were met with celebratory cheers from onlookers as they crossed the finish line. A look of accomplishment was easily visible on many faces as they arrived. For many, this was just one more challenge that they had overcome. Donna Salzman – one of those standing at the finish line as the participants came across – had made the trip from Weston, Florida. She was there to support her sisterin-law, who had been diagnosed with breast cancer and was taking part in this year’s race. “I recently had surgery on my foot or else I would be participating,” said Salzman. “My husband and kids are walking for me.” — See Cancer on page 5 Sangjib Min/ Newport News Daily Press / MCT Campus Juan Sebastian De Elcano of Spain, left, and Cisne Branco of Brazil line up with the sunrise. Stories from Spain Traveler shares his experience with students By Tachianna Mitchell [email protected] EAST CAMPUS — Jeremy Bassetti gave a speech and presented a collection of pictures taken in Spain, to a group of students and teachers at the “Reflections of Spain” event last Thursday at the Valencia College East Campus. “In many courses that we teach, Spain is neglected,” Bassetti said. The Aga Khan Foundation was founded by His Highness, the Aga Khan, in 1967 as a humanitarian agency committed to the reduction of the ills which have adversely affected millions of families and children throughout the world, including the United States. Since its debut in the United States in 1983, Partnerships in Action has become a unique initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation U.S.A. In fact, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer has declared Sunday, Oct. 27, as Partnerships in Action Day. Worldwide data regarding hunger, illiteracy, and diverse diseases should inspire all of us to become more involved. For example, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, in West Africa’s Dakar 40 percent of the adult population cannot read. In Afghanistan, especially during the seven years of fundamentalist rule, 79 percent of women and girls could not read. The Aga Khan Foundation has introduced impressive initiatives in these countries and elsewhere throughout the world. In Pakistan, for instance, and in other Middle Eastern countries, The Aga Khan Foundation operates more than 300 schools and programs, which provide quality pre-school, primary, and secondary education, including world-class training of competent and inspiring teachers. Also, in Africa and in Asia, where mortality rates are alarmingly high, the Aga Khan Foundation implements innovative solutions regarding access to clean water, how to avoid sexually transmitted diseases (STD’s), especially among young girls, the training of health care workers and new mothers, and other health-related initiatives designed to improve the overall health of global citizens worldwide. So, let’s talk less and do more. Silence only perpetuates injustice. Walk the talk now! John Scolaro is a professor of humanities at Valencia College. WEST CAMPUS — Eager engineering students, like sophomore Steven Heob, gathered on Valencia College’s West Campus to attend the “Built Environment Forum” this past Friday. “It’s interesting to see there’s so many other students who are into engineering,” said Heob. “Us engineers don’t socialize much with all of our studying, so it’s cool to see there’s so many of us,” he laughed. This event was hosted by the Valencia College Division of Engineering, Computer Programming, and Technology, and presented recent advances in the fields, and had break-away sections for groups to see just how quickly our civil engineering, and drafting fields are moving. “I feel like this is like, a showing of the future, and I’m totally out of the loop,” said sophomore Casey Nichols, reviewing all the pamphlets he received. As students enjoyed a complimentary breakfast, they discussed 3D printers, joked at the likes of hit TV series “The Big Bang Theory”, and a presentation on recent construction tools. It was a 4 hour event, and students were eager to get to the provided Advisory Panel about their future in the fields of engineering and technology. “If they have it again next year I’m coming, and I’ll probably bring a few of my ideas up to see if I’m on the right track. Who knows, maybe I’ll meet my next business partner,” laughed Nichols. With less than a few weeks left to prepare for opening night at the Performing Arts Center of Valencia’s East Campus on Oct. 18, the large cast is hard at work perfecting their dialogue, stage block- ing, dancing and musical numbers. Final parts of this musical puzzle are still being positioned as the entire cast and crew finalize all the necessary details. Overall, the attitude of the cast is upbeat and positive under the guidance of John DiDonna, Valencia College’s new theatre department program chair. When DiDonna was asked what he thinks about this current production he said “Great dancing, great singing, and a gorgeous and talented cast. What more could anyone ask for?” DiDonna admits that he has a love-hate relationship with James Tutten / Valencia Voice JohnMichael McDonald (left), and Nicole Visco get dramatic while rehearsing for ‘Chicago.’ musicals and added “For me; I need to pick one that I can associate with, that I can really tap into a story with, and ‘Chicago’ is one of those.” “Chicago” is one of the most popular and successful Broadway musicals of all time. The Broadway revival of the musical in 1996 won six Tony Awards, and a 2002 major motion picture based on the musical won six Academy Awards including best picture. Characters and events in “Chicago” are based on real life crime stories from 1920s Chicago during the Prohibition-era. The story deals with corruption in the criminal justice system and a rise in the public’s fascination with “celebrity criminals.” One of the standout character performances from this version of “Chicago” is Roxie Hart, who is played by UCF theatre major Nicole Visco. She brings a high level of sassy style to her acting and has performed in around 20 productions before, most of which were musicals. “Character wise, I think Roxie is a big challenge to portray,” said Visco. “Because this show has so much fantasy and so much reality it’s almost two separate characters.” Visco thinks about performing with a grand vaudevillian style for the fantasy portions of the show, and draws inspiration from what she imagines it’s like to be in jail for the serious James Tutten / Valencia Voice Rachel Rees who plays Velma Kelly in “Chicago,” goes through her lines at a rehearsal last week. reality segments of the production. Strong female characters require strong male roles to help balance out their performance, and that can easily be found in Billy Flynn. Flynn is a dashing and debonair trial lawyer played by JohnMichael McDonald, a second year theater major from Valencia College. “Its going to be a phenomenal show and are director John DiDonna is phenomenal, I love his direction style,” said McDonald. Modeling his character on classic lawyer portrayals like Atticus Finch from “To Kill a Mockingbird,” McDonald praises DiDonna on his open approach with actors he trusts. “He gives us the opportunity to take our characters and do what we want with them, and feel our way through that.” Valencia College Theater will only have seven performances of “Chicago” on select days from Oct. 18 through 27. Evening performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26, with early matinee shows at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20 and 27. A special one time only event will also be held after the performance on Oct. 25, with the cast and crew engaging in a talk-back with the audience about the production. After the winners of the race were recognized on stage, a few key speakers discussed their own battle and triumph over breast cancer, expressing solidarity with other survivors that was defined, not by their affliction, but by their choice to push forward and overcome it. “I’ve been involved in breast cancer volunteering for approximately 16 years,” said Jacqueline Moore. “We have people out here walking and they’re on their medication. LIFESTYLE www.valenciavoice.com Oct. 9, 2013 8 Steve Aoki helps drive dance culture with hip-hop sounds Florida is a hot bed for electronic dance music By Ty Wright [email protected] Grammy-nominated musician and record producer, songwriter, and founder of Dim Mak Records — his father should be proud that his hard work genes wore off on his son. The work ethic of a wild animal, it’s no wonder Steve Aoki is one of the most requested artist in the music industry. No newbie to the music scene, the 35year old entrepreneur founded Dim Mak in 1996. Since its creation Dim Mak has evolved from a little-known hardcore band out of southern California to a movement looking to push the boundaries of music, through records, apparel and non stop touring. While Aoki has claimed a plethora of fans over the years acting as one of the front-runners helping push the Electronic Dance Music (EDM) world, his list of haters has also increased. Recently a satirical web publication deemed him as a “fake DJ” just looking to shake up the culture, going as far as quoting him on things he never said. “I thought it was funny, because they actually quoted me saying shit I never said,” said Aoki in an exclusive phone interview with the Voice. “It was so absurd that I was laughing until people actually believed it. “That’s when I was like ‘You know Dove Shore Steve Aoki makes his way to Orlando on Oct. 20 alongside Waka Flocka Flame and Dim Mak family. what, the last thing I want to do is confuse my fans because at the end of the day I am where I am because of my fans. It’s because of them I’m doing what I’m doing.’ If they didn’t give a f--k about my music or never came out to my shows, I guess I would have decided a long time ago it’s time to move on.” Coming off what he credits as the biggest year of his career — Aoki put the “Tour Forever” mantra to full force performing in more than 350 stops on the Deadmeat Tour, released an album, and was nominated for a Grammy — he looks to only make this year better. While he has no plans to release his second studio album, “Neon Future”, until the spring of 2014, he does plan to continue putting out music and continue touring. It may be safe to say that Aoki does not stop working and may in fact be a vampire. Instead of taking the potential few days he had off from shows to rest. Following his performance at electronic music festival TomorrowWorld, he spent them on late night studio sessions leading all the way up to night before his “Aiokofy” tour started. “I’m really proud of what my work ethic has grown to be. I got a good discipline that I learned from my father, who trained me like a f---ing animal.” While many artist have trouble making and putting out music on the go, Aoki has managed to fit it in his tour schedule. “At the end of the day it’s all about discipline, because you have the time as long as you make use of it and manage it properly.” For a long period of time Aoki could not produce while he was on the road. Throughout the years he has evolved and credits a good part of that success to his peers, rapper Kendrick Lamar being one in specific. “[Kendrick’s] work ethic really inspired me. His bus was a studio, so whenever I went there to jam out he was working hard. Dude has the best work ethic I’ve seen in a while from an artist.” Aoki and Kendrick spent three weeks together on a bus, during the spring, touring to different colleges across the U.S. where he was able to soak up some of those influences. During this time Aoki got to experience some of the best moments of his career, as he witnessed two different cultures and communities come together for one event, to create a positive vibe and have the time of their life. Rather than just letting those memories fade away at the conclusion of that tour, Aoki began searching for another hiphop artist that could help provide that natural organic bridge and supply that same spark if not greater on the “Aokify America Tour.” After doing some research and thinking of artist he already was a fan of, he turned to Atlanta rapper Waka Flocka Flame. “The thing about this tour is I want to make it the most live tour possible. When I was looking at other artist I checked out his YouTube videos and dude is f---ing nuts. “The guy is not just an incredible rapper with a great catalog of songs and an amazing following, he is also a great performer on stage. He’s always interacting with the audience and jumping around; and some what reminds me of myself to be honest. When I see him going crazy, I’m like that’s the guy I want to be touring with.” A good fit in deed. Aside from touring together, Waka will also be one of the many featured artist on “Neon Future.” Others artist expected make guest appearances on the album are Machine Gun Kelly, — See Aoki on page 9 LIFESTYLE www.valenciavoice.com Oct. 9, 2013 9 Seattle-based rapper turns hard times into good records Hip-hop artist brings new sound to rock based tour By Danny Morales [email protected] Ben Laub, or better known by his stage name Grieves, has experienced a lot in the past couple of years, he’s experienced enough “shit” to go on a record a record about it. Pepper and Grieves have been familiar with each other since they were on Warped Tour together in 2011, a time where Grieves says they became “besties.” The two kept in touch and when Fall came around Grieves received a call from the band seeing if we wanted to go on dio session but don’t rule out a potential song from two, as they have collaborated on some ideas. “We definitely talked about it and hopefully there could be a time that happens in the future. You get to hear him rapping and you get to hear him singing, and it’s a very rare occurrence.” Aoki makes his way to Central Florida beginning Saturday Oct. 19, where he will play the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa. The following day he will take the Firestone Live stage in Orlando. “Florida is one of the best places in America for dance music. It’s like a hotbed for the type of music I do, so take While at his Orlando show Grieves revealed to us that he is currently working on a project with San Jose musician B. Lewis. The new project will have a “much bigger sound than the last record,” according to Grieves. He says that the record is recorded and he is mixing it on the road, with B. Lewis and himself even going as far as buying the same kind of headphones so they can hear the music the same way. Grieves is also friends with fellow Seattle-based rapper, Macklemore and the two have known each other for close to 10 years. “I’ve known Ben for probably about a decade,” said Grieves about his friendship with Macklemore. “He’s one of the first people I met when I moved to Washington.” He went on to say that Macklemore eventually dropped language into his world and that is when he realized that his fellow Seattle MC was a “really good rapper.” Grieves will head out on tour with Sweatshop Union beginning Oct. 29. that back it’s one of the best places in the world. “America is bubbling with energy and enthusiasm and growth, and interest of what we’re doing with the music. Viewers have the opportunity to see 220 films this year compared to last year which contained 140 films. “This film festival will bring new and unique cinema to the area,” said Springen, who added that a majority of the films being shown at the festival, will be viewed for the first time by those of the “mainstream.” The festival will feature “Chasing Shakespeare,” starring Danny Glover and Graham Greene on opening night, show-time starting at 7 p.m. Glover may be in attendance. “There is a chance he will be there. We are waiting to hear back from the director,” said Springen, before going on to add that there would be from 300-500 additional directors, actors and other film production staff at the event. This film about astronauts in orbital crisis is exhausting in all the ways it should be, from the emotional strain of watching the believable characters enduring unimaginable life-or-death chaos to the muscle stress incurred from gripping the armrest. This could be a classic. When Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) is introduced, she already is in a state of high-stakes stress. A medical engineer Warner Bros. Pictures / MCT Sandra Bullock and George Clooney are stranded in space and trying to survive in “Gravity. drafted to perform a specific mission on the Hubble Space Telescope, Stone is doing her best to maintain composure on a controlled spacewalk. She is ably assisted by an old pro, Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), a NASA astronaut who has been on enough shuttle missions to confidently navigate the inherent strangeness of zero gravity, a state in which up and down mean close to nothing, and momentum can be both Box Office a tool for quick travel and a sudden trip into the void of space and certain death. He is a calm presence, but even Kowalski has never experienced anything like the next series of events. A scheduled Russian destruction of a communications satellite goes spectacularly wrong, and a volley of deadly space debris is sent hurtling toward the space shuttle. In just a few violent seconds, Kowalski and Stone are cut off from their ‘Gravity’ Warner Bros. vehicle as well as most communications. The International Space Station is far out of reach and just as vulnerable to damage. They are all alone, 347 miles above the city lights of Earth and without a clear path to safety. All of this works because Cuaron, the risk-taker who built a fully believable nearfuture dystopia with his last film, “Children of Men,” gives as much thought to the story (co-written with his son, Jonas Cuaron) as he does to his breathtaking visual execution. This is a story about personal survival and overcoming the internal, emotional barriers that would otherwise doom Bullock’s character, but it is presented in a way that puts the viewer entirely inside her experience. Consider one unifying element in all mainstream science-fiction films: Despite everything that is known about zero gravity, even the films that get most of that experience right for their characters still provide viewers the safe haven of an x/y axis — there is still a sense of up and down, at least for the observers. Now, say goodbye to all of that. “Gravity” spins, careens and shocks the viewer with the uneasy feeling of powerlessness in space. It’s likely many viewers will find it difficult to stomach the extraordinary loss of orientation that “Gravity” so vividly portrays. But the story resonates thanks to a beautifully structured script with naturalistic dialogue, and Bullock and Clooney are operating at full power, which makes “Gravity” something more than just a paradigm shifter. Stepping into Charlie Sheen’s whizkid role is Justin Timberlake as Richie, who discovers he’s been swindled by a foreign-based site run by Ivan Block (Ben Affleck, no substitute for Michael Douglas). Richie flies to Costa Rica to confront Ivan, then starts working for him. The similarities continue: John Heard plays Richie’s hangdog dad, Gemma Arterton plays the high-class trophy, and Anthony Mackie snarls (rather well) as an FBI agent who wants Richie to turn informant. “Runner Runner” might get away with the cribbing if it brought anything truly new to the table (the script is by Brian Koppelman and David Levien), but its only selling point is an aboveaverage turn by Affleck, cast against type as a charming villain. For once, Affleck’s superior, slightly bored affect works in his favor. A little rough stuff might have goosed the movie’s energy, but “Runner Runner,” though rated R, feels like a harmless PG13. We hear talk of violence and dirty deeds but never see them, which makes it difficult for us to truly fear Ivan — what’s so bad about the guy? -- or to sympathize with the knock-kneed Richie (Timberlake’s pipsqueak performance doesn’t help). Director Brad Furman (“The Lincoln Lawyer”) adds grit, but only on the surface. “Wall Street” probed difficult questions about morality and capitalism, but “Runner Runner” isn’t thinking that hard. The movie mostly wants to look timely and seem topical. Instead, it feels irrelevant. Twentieth Century Fox Justin Timberlake’s character (right), a college student with a gambling problem, joins an online gambling empire and gets interested in his boss’s girl, played by Gemma Arterton. At a glance: ‘Runner, Runner’ By Stephanie Cardenas [email protected] Richie Furst, played by Justin Timberlake, used to have a profitable career on Wall Street; this history prevents him from receiving tuition assistance at Princeton University, so he funds his master’s degree by referring students to online gambling, for which he receives a cut. After the dean threatens to expel him for these activities, Richie tries to win his tuition using his excellent poker skills in online gambling, but he loses all his money to a cheater (something he is able to prove by statistics). He later travels to Costa Rica to confront the online gambling tycoon Ivan Block, Ben Affleck, which he believes cheated him face-to-face. Richie is seduced by Block’s promise of immense wealth, until he learns the disturbing truth about his benefactor. When the FBI tries to coerce Richie to help bring down Block, Richie faces his biggest gamble ever: attempting to outmaneuver the two forces closing in on him. Runner, Runner is a 2013 American crime drama thriller film directed by Brad Furman, and written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien. The film stars Timberlake, Affleck and Gemma Arterton, and was produced by Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Davisson Killoran, Michael Shamberg, and Stacey Sher. Unfortunately most critics have disliked the movie stating that it was not as good as it was expected. It is sad to say that personally there was a higher expectancy, due to the talented cast. Timberlake lacked the main characters role, charisma, letting Affleck steal the spotlight. LIFESTYLE www.valenciavoice.com Oct. 9, 2013 13 Comedian comes out with pride Loni Love brings her routine to Orlando Impov By Chris Fain [email protected] The Orlando Improv is really dark when the lights are down. Normally, I’d not notice this, but Loni Love managed to get them turned up, so she could spot gay guys in the crowd. She spots one and instantly switches into joke mode. “You ever been with a Loni Love Love has appeared on multiple television shows including “Chelsea Lately” on E!. black man sugarstick?” she asks. “Yes,” the man yells back, voice equally part embarrassed and defiant. This exchange earns a big laugh from the crowd and an even bigger laugh from Love herself. At one point the world’s “worst engineer;” Love proves to be the exact opposite when it comes to stand-up comedy. Thursday night was evidenced by the killer set she put on throughout the night. There’s not one target she won’t take on; she starts the show with a bit on Miley Cyrus – it comes off a little stale – mostly because of this new world we live in where last week’s news might as well be 50 years ago. Love possesses a natural charisma that really helps her sell some of her more uncomfortable material. At one point she shares what may have been one of the most racist Asian caricatures I’ve ever heard. However under laid a playfulness that makes it, if not okay, at least digestible. It also helps Love that her jokes are all very funny and vaguely familiar. That’s not to say that the jokes are similar to other comics jokes, but Love is like that one aunt we all have. The aunt that has no problem insulting herself as long as you know at some point she’s gonna make her way to you. Being assertive and noticing what’s around her, she incorporates the crowd into her set once more when she see someone celebrating a birthday – as if on cue – Love has her opening act (D’Sean Ross) perform an impromptu strip tease for the lucky birthday lady. This of course occurs after Love serenades the audience with the Golden Girl’s theme song. Love ended the show with an uplifting Whitney Houston song, and before you know it, the entire audience was singing along. The last notes sorta hang in the air; nobody is quite ready to let this end. It’s an experience. Spotlight: D’Sean Ross By Chris Fain [email protected] The first thing one will notice about D’Sean Ross is his smile. The thing is huge. Wide enough that you can see it dozens of feet away across a dark room. Next you will notice that he’s funny. Funny enough to have you doubled over, the laughter flowing from your stomach as easily as puke. That being said, it’s weird to know Ross got into comedy “on a dare.” “One time someone dared me to get up there and tell some jokes,” said Ross. After throwing up, Ross decided to take the challenge. He’s since made a career out of it. Based out of Los Angeles, he can regularly be seen performing at the Improv or Laugh Factory. That’s when he’s not out on the road opening for Loni Love. “It’s absolutely amazing,” he said when asked to describe what it’s like opening for Love. “She’s a nice woman — very funny. She makes me funnier because she’s so funny.” Thanks to his comedy, Ross has been able to land on television. He’s been on everything from BET’s “Comic View” to MTV’s “Yo Mama,” but Ross is most proud of how he’s touched lives with his comedy. He’s been overseas to entertain the troops. “Actually one girl told me she was gonna commit suicide and the laughter she got that night gave her the strength to live another day. That was the best compliment I’ve ever been given,” he responds when asked to name his favorite thing about performing stand-up comedy. The Knights will be playing their first season as members of the American Athletic Conference (AAC) and will face many quality opponents throughout the season, including the defending National Champion Louisville Cardinals. The move to the AAC will also mean more time on national television for the Knights. UCF will be on national T.V. for all 18 of their conference games this season, compared to the total of 17 league games the Knights had nationally televised from 2005-13. This upcoming season will also present the opportunity of a NCAA tournament berth, something that wasn’t in the cards for the Knights last season due to NCAA sanctions. The possibility of tournament play is additional motivation for UCF going into the season. “You want to be playing in March your best basketball and your team improves through the year for that goal,” said UCF head coach Donnie Jones about the extra motivation the possibility of an NCAA tournament berth brings. “I think with that being a real reality, I think it’ll be a great motivation.” UCF last made the NCAA tournament in 2005, where they were a No. 15 seed and were bounced in the first round by the Uconn Huskies. The Knights have made it to March Madness four times in school history and have never made it out of the opening round. “Now we have a goal, now we have something we can work for, something we can reach,” said senior Calvin Newell about the tournament. “We played hard hard last year but it’s always better when you see something in the future.” One notable name, and beard, that will be missing from the UCF lineup this year is power forward Keith Clanton, who has graduated since last season. Clanton averaged 14.8 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2 blocks per game as a senior last season. Isaiah Sykes looks to be the player to most likely step up in the leadership role this season after forgoing the NBA Draft to return to UCF for his senior year. Sykes averaged 16 points, 7.5 rebounds and 2.3 steals as a junior and was leading the country with two triple-doubles. “I’ve got tons of great teammates that can do different things,” said Sykes at UCF’s media day on Monday. “We’re all going to bring it and we’re all going to complete as one.” The Knights will go into the 2013-14 season with four returning seniors, three of which were starters as juniors. Guard Calvin Newell plans to contribute to a NCAA tournament run with his play in the backcourt alongside Sykes. “I think me and Isaiah are some of the better guards in the country,” said Newell. “We’ve been working out together all summer and I think we’re ready to show this campus and the conference what we’re made of as a team.” UCF will also have a new look on the court, most notably the “blacked out” court that was installed over the summer. The Knights also have new uniforms for this season, sporting old school pinstripes on their home white jerseys. “I’m excited about the blacktop,” said Jones about the new look Knights. “Having a chance that everytime you turn the T.V. on you know UCF’s playing.” This season’s schedule is the toughest in program history and features games against four teams that made it to the NCAA tournament in March, including the Memphis Tigers and Cincinnati Bearcats. UCF will also have an oppurtunity to keep the “War on I-4” rivalry going with a home-and-home series against the in-state rival University of South Florida Bulls. The Knights begin the 2013-14 season on Friday, Nov. 8 against Tampa at the CFA Arena, formerly UCF Arena, and begin AAC play on New Years Eve against the defending champion Louisville Cardinals at home on ESPN 2 at 5 p.m. Danny Morales / Valencia Voice Senior forward Tristan Spurlock (No. 1) dunks while his teammates look on at UCF media day. U.S. Women’s soccer to play at Citrus Bowl By Valencia Voice Staff Almost two decades later, an international soccer match is returning to play in Orlando, Fla., the Women’s national team that is. Currently ranked No.1 in the FIFA Women’s Ranking, the United States Women’s National team will play against the Brazilian national team on Nov. 10 at the Florida Citrus Bowl, according to Orlando City SC president Phil Rawlins. The announcement occurred on Monday afternoon when Rawlins tweeted out that the club and US Soccer agreed to partner to bring the national friendly to play for the first time since the 1994 World Cup. The move to bring a high-profile match back to Orlando will look to coexist as the Orlando City Soccer Club will look to lock up an MLS expansion. “Orlando City SC is thrilled to help bring the U.S. Women’s National Team to Orlando,” Rawlins said in a statement. “ Chuck Myers / MCT Campus USA forward Alex Morgan warms during practice for a friendly match against Mexico at RFK Stadium in Washington, D.C. As the Tars move to 10-0-0 after a 2-1 victory Sunday afternoon over #21 West Florida, there is definitely a buzz stirring about the third ranked team in the country. “We don’t look ahead past any games...we know we have a target on our back, we are just taking it game by game,” said Sophomore forward Tucker Hume when the Valencia Voice sat down with the brothers to talk about the recent success of the team. Growing up in football crazed Austin, Texas, it seemed only natural for the Humes to have a life on the gridiron. Their grandfather Tom Franckhauser played for the Dallas Cowboys’ inaugural team in 1960, so it was already in their blood. Or when the brothers grew to 6 feet, 5 inches, it might seem more logical that they would have made their mark on the basketball court. But it was “the pitch” where the Humes found their place. “We played every sport growing up, but from the beginning we loved soccer,” Walker said. The Tars will continue the regular season through October. Boxing shines in Orlando By Danny Morales [email protected] Miguel Cotto got back to his winning ways on Saturday night, as he defeated Delvin Rodriguez via a 3rd round TKO in what will forever be known as the first professional boxing event at the Amway Center. The 32-year old out of Caguas, Puerto Rico was making his Orlando debut on Saturday, in front of a majority pro-Cotto crowd. Orlando is like a second home to Cotto, who trained in his own gym in Central Florida up until he decided to train with Freddie Roach in Los Angeles. “Being here in front of this crowd, everybody cheering my name, makes me feel good,” said Cotto about fighting in front of the Orlando crowd. “It makes me feel like people love my work, people love what I’m doing.” Cotto hurt Rodriguez late in the 2nd round, but Rodriguez was saved by the bell. Rodriguez would go down in the 3rd round, leading to the referee stopping the fight early. “I was a little dazed,” said Rodriguez about the early stoppage. “But I dropped and the referee stopped the fight and that’s it and he gave me no chance to get up at all.” A title was also on the line on Saturday in the co-main event between Lightweights Andrey Klimov and Terence Crawford. Crawford took the fight easily by a unanimous decision where all judges gave him the fight by a score of 100-90. In the undercard Jayson Velez defeated Dat Nguyen via unanimous decision (98-91, 96-93, 96-93) in what could have easily been the fight of the night. Local boxer shows talents By Frank Shala [email protected] This time last year Lamar “T-N-T” Charlton didn’t know if he was going to walk again, let alone find himself back in the ring. He definitely showed he has plenty walk left in him after fighting to a split-draw in the first fight of the night at the Amway Center on the Miguel Cotto-Delvin Rodriguez undercard. “We’re not promised tomorrow,” Charlton said in a phone interview a week before the fight. After moving to Texas last year for work, Lamar found himself on the wrong end of a home robbery. He was shot in the scrum and was hospitalized. Raised in Ocala, Fla., Charlton has been in boxing his whole life. A decorated amateur career led him to travel with the Florida national team at an early age to many nationally recognized tournaments. Charlton turned pro in 2009 and has always had the attitude that he will fight anyone, at anytime. That led to a 2011 Telemundo bout against a highly decorated, Hairon Socarras, in which he fought to a draw in a fight many ringside observers say Lamar won. In attendance that night was Miguel Cotto who was impressed with the performance. “T-N-T” said Cotto’s promoting team reached out to him for this opportunity knowing he is a fighter that puts on a great show. The Orlando fans had plenty to cheer about in what was a back-and-forth fight. “They thought I was just gonna be another opponent, but i’m nobody’s opponent,” Charlton said in a postfight interview. “I came into this fight ready to win.” Lamar said he is still “buzzing” from the experience of fighting on such a high profile fight card televised on HBO. “To be honest just to get on the card, it shows how far I have come since last year,” said Charlton. “I’m already back in the gym though and ready to go on with my career, and continue to put Ocala, Fla. on the map.” SPORTS www.valenciavoice.com Oct. 9, 2013 18 Hometown kid gets chance Orlando native feels at home with Solar Bears By Frank Shala [email protected] Defenseman and Orlando native Myles Harvey will join the Orlando Solar Bears for the upcoming season after playing the last four seasons for Providence College (NCAA), where he served as an alternate captain during his junior and senior seasons.
