REPORT
Fiscal Year
2015-2016
MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR
Dear Friends,
“Change” was the hallmark of the 2015-2016 Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra season.
We bid farewell to Maestro Fouad Fakhouri as he completed his eleventh and final
season as our Music Director and Conductor. Last August, a transition committee
composed of Board members, musicians, and community supporters of the FSO, met for
the first time with the daunting challenge of finding our new Music Director/Conductor.
After evaluating 273 applications, literally from all over the world, the field has been
narrowed down to five finalists and we look forward to meeting each one during the
2016-2017 season, as they will each travel to Fayetteville and lead our symphony
orchestra in a major concert. By the end of the 2016-2017 season, the two year process
of filling this most important position should result in the naming of the next Music Director/Conductor of the
Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra.
The 2015-2016 season also saw the inaugural FSO Jazz & Wine Fest. This yearly festival is an outdoor event, held
each October and although the weather did not cooperate for the inauguration, it was a big hit with audience
members and showcased some of the finest young musical talent from across the state. Other highlights of the
2015-2016 season include:
• A $100,000 grant from the John William Pope Foundation, the first ever of its kind, to establish an instrument
lending library for the Fayetteville Symphony Youth Orchestra.
• An anonymous $1,000,000 endowment gift in honor of Maestro Fakhouri to benefit the Fayetteville Symphony
Orchestra.
• Nearly sold out performances for the St. John’s Concert Series.
• Performance of “Peter & the Wolf” for all Cumberland County School System 3rd graders.
• The Fayetteville Symphony Youth Orchestra received an excellent rating in a competition at Carowinds.
• Our fourth annual Memorial Day Concert. Not only did the Army Ground Forces Band join us again this year,
but their commander Captain Dae Kim literally took the baton and guest conducted the entire concert to the
delight of the audience.
We eagerly anticipate the upcoming season, not only because it is the beginning of the end of our search for a new
Music Director/Conductor, but also, with the help of our small, but highly motivated and professional staff, build on
our past success in the areas of marketing, audience building, endowment and community outreach.
It is truly an honor and privilege to work with such an outstanding organization.
Thank you for your continued support of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and I look forward to seeing you at
all of our future concerts!
Sincerely,
Joe Vonnegut
Board Chair

Fayetteville Symphony Awarded $100,000 Grant from the John William Pope
Foundation to start an Instrument Lending Library for the Youth Orchestra
Nearly 30 organizations from across the state submitted proposals for the John William Pope Foundation’s first Joy
Pope Memorial Arts Grant, worth $100,000. “The project submitted by the Fayettevile Symphony was unique and an
excellent use of one-time funds,” John Hood, president of the Pope Foundation, said in a statement.
The money will be used to establish a library that lends instruments to young musicians. It is designed to help
students who are eager to participate in either the youth orchestra and/or summer music camp, but can’t
necessarily afford the opportunity, or have an instrument of their own on which to participate. The library will
consist of instruments that are hard to find but needed for orchestral works such as A clarinets, english horn, and C
trumpets; instruments that are too big to bring home from school such as string basses and tuba; and also
instruments that are sometimes too expensive to afford such as bassoons and cellos. The library will also have violins
and violas available as well for those that can’t afford their own, or cannot bring their school instrument home.
Third Grade Classroom Visits
In November 2015, we presented two concerts for all 4,000+ third
graders in the Cumberland County Schools to introduce them to the
purpose and power of a live symphony orchestra. Our own
musicians also went into 29 elementary schools over the
month of October to present the third graders an engaging and
informative Q&A session about the symphony orchestra and Peter and
the Wolf (the main piece of the Third Grade Concert in
November). These educational sessions helped prepare the students
for their upcoming trip to our concert with a deeper knowledge and
understanding of a live symphonic concert experience.

Summer Music Camp
From June 27 - July 1, 2016 we held our summer music camp at Fayetteville Academy. Unlike the traditional band
or orchestra camp, the FSO Summer Music Camp is an individualized focused day camp that offers small ensemble
playing opportunities, daily group and individualized instruction, and masterclasses/lectures on fundamentals
and advanced technique. Students were assigned to chamber ensembles for the week and worked closely with
the instructors and other students in a fun and inviting musical atmosphere. The instructors for the week were all
professional musicians of the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra and included Dr. Larry Wells (Trumpet), Mr. Nate
Leyland (Cello), Mrs. Anne Leyland (Violin), Ms. Julia Atkins (Clarinet), Mrs. Sarah Busman (Flute), Mr. Steve
Skillman (French Horn), Dr. Andrew Smith (Tuba), and Mr. Stuart McLemore (String Bass).
Comments from students who participated included:
“The teachers were funny, good, friendly, and amazing people!”
“I improved my sound A LOT!”
“I learned stuff that I wouldn’t learn in band.”
“The camp went into a lot of topics not covered anywhere else, so as a player, I
became better. It was also fun working in chamber groups which provided a different
experience for me.”
