Foster Closes in on
Career Record at South
Williamsville South lost to crosstown rival Williamsville
North 21-7 last week.
“I thought our kids played great,” coach Kraig Kurzanski
said. “That’s the best we have played on defense in a couple of years. North is a pretty solid team and we held them
to 76 yards rushing.”
The loss means the Billies are the 4th-seed from A North
and will open the playoffs against South Park.
“We’ve made the playoffs for 7 years in a row and that’s
important to us,” Kurzanski said.
Jack Holyoke,
the Billies starting
QB, was injured
against Williamsville
North. It is not
known if he will be
available to play
against South Park.
“Jack got hurt in
the 2nd quarter,”
Kurzanski said. “We
assessed him at
halftime but he
couldn’t throw the
ball so we pulled
him out.”
If the Billies are
going to get past

Foster.
Williamsville South senior Matt Foster.
“Matt’s been a
big part of our
offense for two years now,” Kurzanski said.
Foster, a senior, has had an incredibly productive two
years with the Billies.
He led all WNY receivers with 54 catches for 1,160
yards. This season, he has 47 catches for 777 yards. He
needs just one more catch to tie the Will South career
record of 102 receptions held by Phil Stasiak.
“Matt already has the yardage record,” Kurzanski said.
Foster (6-4, 220) was timed at 4.53 in the 40-yard dash.
“He’s very fast for a kid that big,” Kurzanski said. “He
was timed at the UB camp, so that time is legit.”
Foster is also an outstanding student with a 95 academic
average. He has already been accepted to both Cornell and
Penn in the Ivy League.
“He also has an offer from Old Dominion,” Kurzanski
said, “and a lot of interest from Colgate, Bucknell and
Central Connecticut.”
Kurzanski said that Foster doesn’t do much talking.
“He’s an old school guy,” he said. “He plays hard, and he
plays through injuries. He’s a quiet, stoic, focused kid.”

Depew fought hard but lost to archrival Lancaster 41-21 last week.
“We just didn’t tackle,” coach Brian
Wilson said. “It’s been like this all year.
When we’ve tackled well, we win. When
we don’t tackle
well, we’ve lost.”
The game did
have bright spots
for Wilson.
“I thought we
were a little more
consistant on
offense than we
have been,” he said.
“We held the ball
and we were able to
move the sticks.”
Wilson also had
no fault with his
players effort,
which encouraged
him as the Wildcats

he said, “but we

have to tackle better or we won’t be around very long.”
Depew will play at Springville in the
first round at 7:00 pm Friday.
“Springville is a good football team,”
Wilson said. “We have to try to stop that
option offense. Hopefully we can do a
good job and get the win.”
Depew will be entering the playoffs
with a back-up QB as the starter.
Jon Wolf, a junior, took the place of
starter Ryan Guay, who was injured in the
Wildcats loss to Medina.
“Ryan separated
his shoulder some
time in the 3rd quarter,” Wilson said.
“Somehow, he
toughed it out for the
rest of the game.”
Wolf got his first
varsity start against
Lancaster.
“It was a tough
place to throw him
in,” Wilson said.
“but he’s a bright
kid and works really hard. He had prepared like a starter
all season.”
Wolf completed

179 yards and a TD.
“He handled

size,” Wilson said. “He did a good job.”
Wolf also plays basketball and baseball for Depew.
“He’s a real steady guy and doesn’t get
nervous,” Wilson said. “He just does his
job in a business-like manner. That will
serve him well in the playoffs.”

Answer The Call!
CTF’s vision is to develop the hearts of coaches and
athletes to be men of character for others.
This Week in the ANSWER THE CALL process is the
word Confidence.
it comes to the game, one of the most confident personalities
in the NFL is Peyton Manning. He says the reason you have
confidence is because of how hard you have prepared and
how hard you have worked.
Also, perfect love destroys fear. This is an enormous
statement that says you will have your teammates back
when he fails. When you do, they will play fast and not worry
about mistakes. When it comes to confidence a Man of
integrity plays and lives confidently and securely. The reason
is simple, He is COMPLETE. Complete athletes play with
confidence and will always ANSWER THE CALL. Play Fast
and when in doubt get out. Fight Finish and keep the Faith!
Strap it up and Get after it.
The Simple ATC statement is JUST….BELIEVE!
Confidence is having full belief and acting on it without
doubt! The Outcome is Faith overcomes Fear. As an athlete
sometimes you just have to trust with all your heart and not
lean or depend on your own understanding.
It is having the mental attitude that all things are possible
for those who believe. Our nation at one time had a confidence in God. This is evident on the dollar bill In “GOD WE
TRUST.”
Now we have a tendency to trust the money more. When

“Yeah,” Mammoliti said with a laugh. “Kind of strange.
Duke’s little brothers.”
Andrew and Jason Hwang have played huge roles with
the Spartans this fall. Mammoliti denies any secret, DNArelated plot to get twins to play for his program.
“It’s just luck of the draw,” he said. “I don’t know how it
works that we get these sets of twins that are great football
players. If it happens again, though...”
Mammoliti says there are similarities between the Ames
twins and the Hwang twins.
“Both sets of twins were impactful on our program,” he
said. “Both sets of twins helped us in the off-season, coming into the season and during the season. They contributed on both sides of the ball and were leaders in all
phases of the program.”
Both Andrew and Jason Hwang are much stronger than
they were in 2014, when they were sophomores trying to
break into the lineup.
“They’re both 12 and 15 pounds heavier than last year,”
Mammoliti said, “and they both worked hard to make themselves bigger and stronger.”
Both players are about 5-10 and 200 pounds. Both kids
have academic average of 94.
“They also know a lot about football,” Mammoliti said. “It
helps because they live together. The have the benefit of
always having someone to watch films on Hudl with or talk
with about the game.”
The players do, however, play different positions.
Jason Hwang (#11) is the QB. He has never played QB
before this season and is currently sharing the position
with senior Jose Padilla.
“Jason has really embraced the position,” Mammoliti
said. “He has done everything he could to become a QB.”
Hwang has QB skills, but Mammoliti says that he and
Padilla will continue to share the position this season.
“Jason throws the ball well,” he said. “He throws it well
going to his left, which a lot of kids can’t do. He has
strength and athletic ability. But we are trying to utilize
everyone we have, so both of those kids will still play.”
Andrew Hwang (#8) starts at TB.
“He is running with authority,” Mammoliti said. “Andrew
is a strong kid and deceptively fast. He can break the first
tackle with his strength and then pull away with his speed.”
Mammoliti says that this year’s team is good... but he
doesn’t know how good yet.
“I feel pretty proud of this team,” he said. “Most of these
kids didn’t start last year. Now they are making significant
contributions. This is a bunch of kids who have bought into
what we are doing for the last 3 to 5 years. They do all the
extra stuff. They watch a ton of film. The players have
made themselves a good team.”
Which, is very similar to the 2013 team which (‘Twins
and Hwangs’ aside) is why comparisons are being made.
“It’s way too early for anything like that,” Mammoliti said.
“But, yes, I think if we play the way we can, we can cause
some trouble for some people.”
Some might even say, ‘Double Trouble.’

It’s not the critic who counts.
Not the man who points out where
the strong man stumbled or where
the doer of deeds could have done
them better.
The credit belongs
to the man
marred by the
dust and the sweat
and the blood;
who strives valiantly;
who errs and comes
short again and
again and again...
...who at best knows,
in the end, the triumph
of high achievements
and who, at the worst,
if he fails at least fails
while daring greatly,
so that his place will
never be with those
cold timid souls
who know neither
victory or defeat.
