Clarence bounced back from a tough
opening night to beat Riverside 31-12 last
week. This is the third straight year that
Layer has had to work with a new QB.
Andrew Lorenz, who started at safety in
2014, was also the back-up QB.

Tech Faces Crucial Game
Hutch Tech dropped a close 27-22 decision to Niagara Falls last week and fell
to 1-1 on the season. The Engineers are
hoping that Jason Dowell is closer to
100 percent at game time after the QB
battled strep throat last week.

North Tonawanda beat Kenmore East 48-0 last weekend
to improve to 2-0 on the season. NT beat Williamsville East
23-0 in Week 1 and the back-to-back shutouts has everyone in the program excited.
“Football is a big deal here at North Tonawanda,” new
head coach Henry Fumerelle said, “ both at the school and
in the community. I’m very honored and pleased to be a
part of it.”
Fumerelle says that, while he was confidant that he had
a good team, he did
not expect to open
the season with a
pair of shutouts.
“Our put a lot of
time into our weight
room,” Fumerelle
said. “I knew they
were strong. But I
did not expect this.
Two straight
shutouts is a great
accomplishment.”
A key player on
the NT defense is
junior FS Patrick
Millbrand.
“He is very intelligent, athletic and
rangy,” Fumerelle
said. “He has a

defensive coordinator and helps set
the coverages with the back end of our defense.”
Millbrand (6-4, 175) also starts at WR for NT.
“He’s very fast,” Fumerelle said. “He’s big and can move.
He didn’t play WR last year. He’s a JV kid who stepped into
a varsity role as a 2-way starter.”
Millbrand also started the season as the Lumberjacks
3rd-string QB.
“He’s the back-up QB now because Tyler Clare broke his
thumb,” Fumerelle said. “So, he’s starting at safety and
wide receiver and he also has to take reps in practice at
QB. That’s a lot of responsibility for one kid.”
Seeing practice time at QB also helps Millbrand in his
role as the starting free safety.
“He’s learning how the QB makes reads and what the
QB sees at the line,” Fumerelle said. “That helps him learn
what coverages we should be in.”
Millbrand is a solid student with an academic average in
the 90s.
“He’s a studious guy,” Fumerelle said. “He listens and he
takes care of whatever we need him to do for us.”

The Heart of a Champion Character Playbook theme is
Answer The Call!
CTF’s vision is to develop the hearts of coaches and
athletes to be men of character for others.
This Week in the ANSWER THE CALL process is the
word Confidence.
it comes to the game, one of the most confident personalities
in the NFL is Peyton Manning. He says the reason you have
confidence is because of how hard you have prepared and
how hard you have worked.
Also, perfect love destroys fear. This is an enormous
statement that says you will have your teammates back
when he fails. When you do, they will play fast and not worry
about mistakes. When it comes to confidence a Man of
integrity plays and lives confidently and securely. The reason
is simple, He is COMPLETE. Complete athletes play with
confidence and will always ANSWER THE CALL. Play Fast
and when in doubt get out. Fight Finish and keep the Faith!
Strap it up and Get after it.
The Simple ATC statement is JUST….BELIEVE!
Confidence is having full belief and acting on it without
doubt! The Outcome is Faith overcomes Fear. As an athlete
sometimes you just have to trust with all your heart and not
lean or depend on your own understanding.
It is having the mental attitude that all things are possible
for those who believe. Our nation at one time had a confidence in God. This is evident on the dollar bill In “GOD WE
TRUST.”
Now we have a tendency to trust the money more. When
Love Never Fails!

including the top-rated RB in the nation. Kareem Walker
has already committed to play at Ohio State in 2016.
After that, the Crusaders will play league rivals St.
Francis and St. Joe’s.
If the Crusaders are going to “age” as quickly as
Robbins hopes, they will be following the lead of Justin
Jones, one of just two starters back from the 2014 squad.
“He’s actually a 3-year starter but only two with us,”
Robbins said. “He transferred here from St. Joe’s. His parents got in contact with us after his sophomore season
over there.”
Jones had originally planned to attend Canisius before
he entered high school.
“He came here in the 8th grade with the HAP program
in the summer,” Robbins said. “We thought we would have
him as a freshman. We were disappointed when he went
to St. Joe’s but we were very excited to have him come
back to us.”
After transferring to Canisius, Jones played on state
championship teams in both football and basketball in the
same school year.
“Winning a state title for football and basketball was
amazing,” Jones said. “To win 2 state titles in the same
year, I can’t even describe it.”
Jones (6-2, 200) caught 14 passes for 244 yards and 3
TDs last season. He also made 48 tackles, 8 for lost
yardage, and intercepted a pass on defense.
“He is fast and one of the most athletic kids in our program,” Robbins said. “He has the best leaping ability I
have ever seen. You can really see it in how he plays
above the rim in basketball.”
Jones was an Honorable Mention All-WNY basketball
player. He was an Honorable Mention All-State football
player and has quite a few Division I schools interested in
him. Albany already offered him a scholarship to play football in 2016.
“Football will be the route I’ll be going with,” Jones said.
“I’ve also been in contact with Old Dominion, Syracuse,
UB and UConn.”
Jones has caught 6 passes for 188 yards and 3 TDs
thus far. He is also one of the Crusaders top tacklers.
“By the end of the year he could be a Connolly Cup
finalist,” Robbins said. “He is that good. It will just depend
on how we do as a team. The more games we win, the
more people pay attention to you.”
Despite being mentioned as one of WNY’s top players,
Robbins says Jones rarely draws attention to himself.
“He’s a quiet, confidant kid and doesn’t do a lot of talking,” Robbins said. “He plays really hard and gives a great
effort every time out. He doesn’t do a lot of yelling. He just
goes about his business and works hard.”
Jones was elected a team captain before the season
started.
“He was voted a captain by the players,” Robbins said.
“I think it’s important that players choose their own leaders.
I think the kids chose pretty well. He’s a good kid and a
good leader.”

It’s not the critic who counts.
Not the man who points out where
the strong man stumbled or where
the doer of deeds could have done
them better.
The credit belongs
to the man
marred by the
dust and the sweat
and the blood;
who strives valiantly;
who errs and comes
short again and
again and again...
...who at best knows,
in the end, the triumph
of high achievements
and who, at the worst,
if he fails at least fails
while daring greatly,
so that his place will
never be with those
cold timid souls
who know neither
victory or defeat.
