DAY 6 – SATURDAY, JUNE 25
LONDON
Joanna Bogle will again accompany you as you begin your day with Mass at Westminster Cathedral. There you will see the incorrupt remains of the Catholic martyr, Saint John Southworth;
and there is a also a relief of STM and John Fisher in the Chapel of St. George and the English Martyrs. Next you will tour of the Houses of Parliament. STM’s coat of arms can be
seen in the House of Commons - and in the House of Lords is the ceremonial woolsack
upon which STM would have sat as the Lord Chancellor. In Westminster Hall, STM practiced
law and his trial took place here on July 1, 1535. After lunch on your own, visit Westminster
Abbey, where STM served as a Member of Parliament in 1504, the year during which Henry VIII
dissolved the Abbey monastery, demolished many statues and confiscated much of its wealth.
After your tour, you will enjoy a three-course dinner with coffee in a local pub or restaurant, followed by a ride on the magnificent
London Eye, where you will enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

DAY 7 – SUNDAY, JUNE 26
LONDON
You will attend Sunday Mass at St. Patrick’s Soho. Fr. Alexander Sherbrooke, pastor of St. Patrick’s, will meet you to describe Bishop Fulton Sheen’s connection with St. Patrick’s and how St. Patrick’s serves as a strategic center for the New Evangelization. After a 2-course lunch with coffee in a
local pub or restaurant, pilgrims will participate in The Tyburn Walk, an annual commemoration of
the Catholic martyrs who were executed here during the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries. The
route ends with Benediction at Tyburn Convent near Marble Arch. The sisters will be available at the
convent to show people the relics and answer questions. The event started in 1910 and is a solemn
commemoration of those who died for their faith. Return to the hotel for dinner.

DAY 8 – MONDAY, JUNE 27
RAMSGATE & CANTERBURY
Today you will enjoy an excursion to Ramsgate (18 miles east of Canterbury) and Canterbury (64
miles east of London). In Ramsgate, Mass will be celebrated at the Shrine of St. Augustine,
which commemorates the evangelization of the Anglo-Saxon peoples by St Augustine, who first landed at Ramsgate, having been sent by Pope Gregory the Great in 597. You will enjoy a presentation by
the rector of the Shrine, Fr. Marcus Holden, on St. Augustine of Canterbury, the years of Catholic
persecution and the modern revival of English Catholicism. After lunch on your own in Canterbury,
you will go to Canterbury Cathedral, where STM visited the famous shrine to his patron, St.
Thomas Becket. Becket’s shrine was destroyed by Henry VIII in 1538, three years after STM’s execution. Before returning to London for dinner at the hotel, you will stop at St. Dunstan’s Church, where STM’s head is buried in the
Roper family vault.
(B, D)
DAY 9 – TUESDAY, JUNE 28
LONDON
Today will be a free day to spend at leisure in London. Plan your own day to visit The British Museum, Piccadilly Circus, Trafalgar Square, Buckingham Palace, Harrods or other places. Lunch and dinner are on your own.
(B)
DAY 10 – WEDNESDAY, JUNE 29
LONDON – WEST GRINSTEAD, SUSSEX - LONDON
Today you will enjoy an excursion to West Grinstead, Sussex - 48 miles south of London - where
you will visit The Priest’s House, location of a secret chapel where illegal Masses were celebrated every day for over 200 years. Here there are three priest hiding holes connected by horizontal
shafts, designed by the carpenter, St. Nicholas Owen. West Grinstead is one of the few places in
England where no priest was ever captured and arrested. You will see the relics of Blessed Francis
Bell, who celebrated Mass here, before suffering martyrdom at Tyburn in 1643. You will also view
artifacts from the secret Masses. West Grinstead is the burial place of the Catholic author Hillaire
Belloc, who was among the first to argue that the English Reformation was a political operation,
not a popular movement. West Grinstead is also home to the beautiful Gothic-revival shrine to
Our Lady of Consolation - the very first shrine created after the Reformation. Mass will be celebrated here and there will be a
presentation on the secret Masses at West Grinstead. Lunch will be provided; and before returning to your hotel, you will enjoy a special farewell 3-course dinner with coffee at English’s Oyster Bar and Restaurant in Brighton, or similar. (B, L, D)

A PILGRIMAGE IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ST. THOMAS MORE
AND THE ENGLISH MARTYRS
Dear Catholic Friends,
I’m so very excited to invite you to join us on our St. Thomas More “Catholic Martyrs” Pilgrimage to the United Kingdom, scheduled for June 20 – 30, 2016!
It’s hard to believe, but for 232 years in England – from 1559 to 1791 - Catholicism
was an illegal religion. It was, of course, Henry VIII who set the stage for those
dark years – by usurping for himself supremacy over the Catholic Church in England. And it was his lay chancellor, Sir Thomas More, who boldly resisted that
usurpation! Many others followed as martyrs for their faith.
We have carefully designed this “Catholic Martyrs” pilgrimage to maximize inspiration and enjoyment – and to minimize wear and tear! For nine wonderful days,
we’ll reside in London at a comfortable four-star hotel. Most sites will be just a
short bus ride away - enchanting places like the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Cathedral and the Tower of London. But we’ll also enjoy three day trips into the countryside: west to Oxford and rural Oxfordshire,
east to Canterbury and Ramsgate and south to West Grinstead. On these days, we’ll visit Canterbury Cathedral (where St. Thomas More’s patron saint was martyred in 1170), St. Dunstan’s Church (the burial site of
St. Thomas More’s head) and Ramsgate (where St. Augustine, the Apostle to the English, first came ashore in
the year 597).
We have also arranged for Joanna Bogle, a Catholic writer, biographer and broadcaster living in London, to
join us at some sites to share her expertise on St. Thomas More and the English Martyrs. You may have seen
her on EWTN’s “Catholic Heritage” series. You will enjoy her!
As you review this brochure, I hope you’ll be as excited as I am about this St Thomas More “Catholic Martyrs” Pilgrimage. Make sure to act quickly because space is limited. I can hardly wait to spend nine inspirational days with you in London!
With every good wish,
In Christ,
Fr. Doug Grandon
The stained glass windows shown on theses pages are found in the Church of Our Lady and
the English Martyrs in Cambridge. They depict martyrs of England who shed their blood for
their faith during the Protestant Reformation. Forty-two have been canonized and a further
242 rank among the beatified. However, the complete number of those who died or suffered
harsh persecution for their Catholic faith during this time cannot be accurately counted.
DAY 1 – MONDAY, JUNE 20
Depart the USA en route to London.
USA
DAY 2 – TUESDAY, JUNE 21
LONDON
Upon arrival in London, you will be met by your tour guide and then transported
to Lincoln’s Inn, one of the best and oldest law schools in England, where St.
Thomas More (STM) actively participated throughout his life – as student, lecturer
and governing officer. You will be joined there for lunch by Joanna Bogle, Catholic
writer, broadcaster and expert on St. Thomas More and the English Martyrs. As
time permits after lunch, Joanna will lead you on a walking tour as you begin
following in the footsteps of St. Thomas More. Mass will be celebrated at a local
church before you check-in at the Copthorne Tara Hotel and have dinner in the
hotel. (L, D)
DAY 3 – WEDNESDAY, JUNE 22 (FEAST DAY OF ST. THOMAS MORE)
LONDON
Today you will celebrate St. Thomas More’s feast day in London! Joanna Bogle will again lead you on a walking tour during which you will see
the location of STM’s Chelsea home, now Allen Hall Seminary (where
Mass will be celebrated). Although the home no longer exists, one of the
mulberry trees he planted still survives in the seminary garden. While
living in Chelsea, STM and his family worshipped regularly at Chelsea
Old Church. We will stop to see its side chapel rebuilt by STM in 1528.
(It was left intact when the church was destroyed during a 1941 WWII air
raid.) L. Cubitt Bevis’s larger-than-life bronze statue of STM is directly in
front of the church and Chelsea Old Library , which would have been
the north boundary of STM’s Chelsea estate. After your walking tour, you will travel by boat to the Tower of
London (as STM did on his final journey)! After lunch on your own, you will have a tour of the historic Tower of London, where special access has been requested to visit the ground floor of the Bell Tower where
STM was imprisoned from April 17, 1534, to July 6, 1535. In the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula, STM’s
body is buried, along with the body of Bishop John Fisher. A plaque and small garden commemorate STM’s
execution on Tower Hill, just outside the Tower of London. Nearby, we will see All Hallows Church,
considered to be the oldest church in London. STM made pilgrimage to the famous Marian shrine there; and
on the north side of the church was a chapel containing an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where it is believed that STM’s daughter, Margaret, prayed during her father’s execution. You will have a 3-course dinner
with tea/coffee in a local pub or restaurant before returning to your hotel. (B, D)
DAY 4 – THURSDAY, JUNE 23
LONDON: EXCURSION TO STONOR PARK
You will enjoy a morning excursion to Stonor Park at Henley-onThames - 40 miles west of London. Heroic Jesuit missionaries celebrated Mass at Stonor Park during the most violent years of anti-Catholic persecution. It will be forever remembered for its association with St. Edmund Campion. He lived there secretly and printed Catholic pamphlets
on a small printing press hidden in the attic, where there is a priest hiding
hole. You will have Mass in Stonor Park Chapel, which dates back to
the 13th century; then have a guided tour of Stonor House and learn about
its history. Before returning to London, we will stop in the delightful town of Henley, adjacent to the River
Thames, for a 2-couse lunch with coffee. Enjoy some free time in Henley-on Thames before returning to
London for dinner on your own. (B, L))
DAY 5 – FRIDAY, JUNE 24
LONDON – OXFORDSHIRE - LONDON
You will travel out of London to Oxsfordshire, stopping to see the
house in Lyford Grange where St. Edmund Campion was arrested.
Next, Mass as St. Mary’s Church in the village of East Hendred 70 miles west of London. St. Mary’s pastor, Msgr. Andrew Burnham, is
a former Church of England Bishop, who was ordained a Catholic priest
in 2011. We will visit Hendred House, whose chapel dates back to the
15th century and is used by the Eyston family, of which STM was a
member. (The oldest son of the Eyston family to this day is always
called Thomas More Eyston!). Following Mass, you will have a 2-course
lunch with coffee at The Wheatsheaf Pub, run by St. Mary’s parishioners. In the afternoon, you will have
an opportunity to explore the charms of medieval Oxford on your own or following Father Doug and Lynn
