Power Increase Units can be connected in parallel to increase the total capacity of the system. When an inverter goes offline, the critical loads are automatically transferred to bypass. Redundancy Units can be connected in parallel to provide redundancy for absolute reliability. In parallel redundant mode, the number of units (N) supply the load and an extra unit is provided in case of failure (N+1). All units share the load current equally. When a unit goes offline, due to failure or maintenance, the standby unit continues to supply the critical load without any interruption. x Automatic adjustment of charging parameters based on the battery configuration entered via the LCD panel. Real-time battery management information is displayed on the LCD, such as battery capacity (as percentage or time remaining). Temperature compensated battery charging monitors are available to monitor the internal and external battery temperature with a feedback control loop to adjust the charge current rate accordingly. Programmable automatic or manual battery tests can be performed without interruption to the UPS operation or load. DSP Controlled IGBT Inverter The DSP controlled IGBT inverter provides a clean, true sine wave output voltage to deliver the highest quality power to protect critical loads. The DSP circuitry is embedded within a single control board to reduce hardware and improve noise immunity. Complex control algorithms are utilised with floating point controllers to ensure uninterrupted operation and protection of the loads in abnormal conditions that may cause failure. The DSP control system achieves fast dynamic response for non-linear loads and high power factor under various load conditions. Static & Manual (Maintenance) Bypass Advanced Battery Management Static and manual bypass switches are Intelligent precision charging principles guarantee enhanced battery life and maximum battery performance and reliability. This provides the reassurance that the battery is primed and ready for the critical role they play in your power protection system. 18 included as standard, with operational characteristics as follows: Static Bypass This feature provides a safe transfer to mains should the UPS be overloaded or develop a fault condition. The static switch contains electronically controlled switching circuits that enable the critical load to be connected to either the inverter output or to a bypass source via the static bypass line. During normal operation, the load is connected to the inverter, but in the event of a UPS overload or inverter failure, the load is automatically transferred to the static bypass line. To provide a clean (no-break) load transfer between the inverter output and static bypass line, the static switch activates and connects the load to bypass. To achieve this, the inverter output and bypass are fully synchronised by the inverter control electronics. Manual Bypass This feature is provided solely to allow maintenance work to be carried out on the UPS without interrupting the power to the load. The UPS can be powered down to enable technical personnel to replace parts. Full system replacement and repair of major components does however, necessitate shutdown of the load. Optional Single or Dual Source Operation To increase flexibility, the UPS input can be fed by single or dual sources. In dual configuration, the rectifier is fed from the utility (main source), and the static and maintenance bypasses are fed from a secondary source. Open Architecture Design The UPS incorporates an open architecture design to facilitate full access to replace parts quickly and easily, resulting in low Mean Time To Repair (MTTR). Diverse Generator Compatibility Thanks to the robust IGBT rectifier, the E300 series UPS is uniquely compatible with a diverse range of sources, in particular, generators. Input current total harmonic distortion (THDi) of less than 3% is achieved without compromising efficiency. The high input power factor enables a generator to be utilised with a power rating only 20% higher than the UPS. Power walk-in can be adjusted from 5 to 15 seconds. Based on the current measured on the input, the UPS gradually increases the power supplied from the utility source to the load. The power, delivered by the utility source to the load, varies according to the input voltage, current and power factor. Back Feed Protection Back feed protection prevents current from the UPS output feeding back to the UPS input terminals, thereby protecting maintenance personnel from electric shock hazards whilst working on the incoming supply side of the system. Reverse Energy Tolerance for Regenerative Loads The E300 series UPS is suitable for use with regenerative loads, such as synchronous motors. Regenerative loads pump energy back to the mains supply. Traditionally, UPS systems would burn this feedback energy, resulting in lower operating efficiency. The IGBT rectifier in the E300 series UPS is capable of absorbing intermittent load generated power. This reverse power tolerance facilitates the execution of important system operations, such as closed transition transfers of the UPS load directly to an engine generator source. Lower Total Cost of Ownership The high efficiency operation of the UPS means that less energy is consumed to supply power to the protected loads. As a result of reduced heat emission and power loss, users benefit from reduced electricity usage and air conditioning requirements. With reduced THDI and high 0.99 input power factor, switchgear, circuit protection, cabling and generator requirements are minimised, thus reducing investment cost. Advanced User Interface The UPS operating information and parameter settings are displayed in 4 different languages and can be accessed using the large user friendly, data rich LCD and system LED mimic panel. The UPS is capable of recording up to 500 events. Advanced Communications A wide range of advanced communication options are available: External Battery Temperature Sensor One module is fitted to each external battery cabinet to monitor the battery temperature. A feedback control loop within the UPS adjusts the charge current based on the battery temperature, optimising battery performance and longevity. Emergency Power Off (EPO) Relay Alarms Card Isolated, volt-free dry contacts indicate the UPS operating status and the presence of alarm conditions. Fully programmable to facilitate the capture of a diverse range of operating and alarm conditions. Opto-isolated inputs allow the UPS to be controlled remotely. The EPO function is designed to switch off the UPS in an emergency situation (eg. fire, flood). Operation of the EPO turns off the rectifier and inverter and cuts power to the load immediately (both the inverter and bypass lines). The EPO also prevents the battery from charging or discharging. RS232/RS485 Serial Port The UPS operating parameters can be observed and controlled locally using an RS232/RS485 communications port. Real time notification of changes in UPS status is reported to users by SMS or e-mail. Green ECO Mode of Operation The E300 series UPS can be operated in high efficiency ECO mode (98%) providing green energy savings through reduced power consumption. With the utility input supply present, the UPS control circuits remain energised, even though the output is turned off. To remove all power from the UPS, the external feeder breaker must be opened. Auto Re-start When the utility and bypass sources fail, the UPS draws power from the battery system to supply the load, until the batteries are depleted. Once the batteries reach their End of Discharge threshold, the UPS will shut down. The UPS will automatically re-start once the utility power is restored and output power to the load will be delivered. The UPS also incorporates a programmable automatic start time delay. SNMP Network Card Enables monitoring and control of the UPS operation by ethernet or internet connection. Allows the remote execution of scheduled events and the shutdown / reboot of the UPS and multiple servers. Full event log and data management. Real time notification of changes in UPS status reported to users by audible alarm, SMS or e-mail. Software supports Windows, Linux, Mac, Solaris, Open VMS and IBM operating systems. N+X Parallel Modular Redundancy 3Powerful 6A charger built into each UPS module with the ability to freely set the charge current level. The E600 series provides N+X parallel modular redundancy for absolute reliability. When a module goes offline, due to failure or maintenance, the remaining modules continue to supply the load without any interruption. The level of redundancy can be set to suit the criticality of the protected load. Should the load increase above the redundancy threshold, the UPS will alarm to notify the user there is insufficient capacity available to maintain the load if a module fails. This allows preventative action to be taken (decrease load or install additional UPS modules). High Availability & MTBF All UPS modules share the load current equally. With two modules configured for redundancy, the UPS system achieves 99.999% availability and the Mean Time Before Failure (MTBF) exceeds 15,000,000 hours, satisfying the reliability requirements of the critical load. The UPS design incorporates ‘drawer style’ hot-swap UPS modules to facilitate quick and easy replacement for low Mean Time To Repair (MTTR). The high input power factor leads to reduced electricity consumption, minimised switchgear and circuit protection, cabling and generator requirements, thus reducing investment cost. Static and manual bypass switches are included as standard, with operational characteristics as follows: DSP Controlled IGBT Inverter The DSP controlled IGBT inverter provides a clean, true sine wave output voltage to deliver the highest quality power to protect critical loads. The DSP circuitry is embedded within a single control board to reduce hardware and improve noise immunity. Complex control algorithms are utilised with floating point controllers to ensure uninterrupted operation and protection of the loads in abnormal conditions that may cause failure. The DSP control system achieves fast dynamic response for nonlinear loads and high power factor under various load conditions. Parallel and Redundant Operation Capability to connect up to 16 units in parallel to provide increased power capacity or redundancy. All parallel units can be operated from the front panel of any UPS. POWER INCREASE Units can be connected in parallel to increase the total capacity of the system. When a unit goes out of order, the critical loads are automatically transferred to bypass. REDUNDANCY Units can be connected in parallel to provide redundancy for absolute reliability. In parallel redundant mode, the number of units (N) supply the load and an extra unit is provided in case of failure (N+1). All units share the load current equally. When a unit goes out of order, due to failure or maintenance, the standby unit continues to supply the critical load without any interruption. 30 STATIC BYPASS This feature provides a safe transfer to mains should the UPS be overloaded or develop a fault condition. To provide a clean (nobreak) load transfer between the inverter output and static bypass line, the static switch activates and connects the load to bypass. Advanced Battery Management Intelligent precision charging principles guarantee enhanced battery life and maximum battery performance and reliability. This provides the reassurance that the battery is primed and ready for the critical role they play in your power protection system. Automatic adjustment of charging parameters based on the battery configuration entered via the LCD panel. The batteries can also be ‘hot-swapped’ without disconnection of the UPS. Single or Dual Source Operation (Optional) To increase flexibility, the UPS input can be fed by single or dual sources. In dual configuration, the rectifier is fed from the utility (main source) and the static and maintenance bypass are fed from a secondary source. Open Architecture Design The UPS incorporates an open architecture design to facilitate full access to replace parts quickly and easily, resulting in low Mean Time To Repair (MTTR). Perfect Generator Compatibility Thanks to the robust IGBT rectifier, the E800 series UPS is uniquely compatible with a diverse range of sources, in particular, generators. This power delivered by the utility source to the load varies according to the input voltage, current and power factor. Emergency Power Off (EPO) The EPO function is designed to switch off the UPS in an emergency situation (eg. fire, flood). Operation of the EPO turns off the rectifier and inverter and cuts power to the load immediately (both the inverter and bypass lines). The EPO also prevents the battery from charging or discharging. With the utility input supply present, the UPS control circuits remain energised, even though the output is turned off. To remove all power from the UPS, the external feeder breaker must be opened. Back Feed Protection (Optional) Back feed protection prevents current from the UPS output feeding back to the UPS input terminals, thereby protecting maintenance personnel from electrocution whilst working on the incoming supply side of the system. Reverse Energy Tolerance for Regenerative Loads The E800 series UPS is suitable for use with regenerative loads, such as synchronous motors. Regenerative loads pump energy back to the mains supply. Traditionally, UPS systems would burn this feedback energy, resulting in lower operating efficiency. The IGBT rectifier in the E800 series UPS is capable of absorbing intermittent load generated power. This reverse power tolerance facilitates the execution of important system operations, such as closed transition transfers of the UPS load directly to an engine generator source. Auto Re-start When the utility and bypass sources fail, the UPS draws power from the battery system to supply the load, until the batteries are depleted. Once the batteries reach their End of Discharge threshold, the UPS will shut down. The UPS will automatically restart once the utility power is restored and output power to the load will be enabled. The UPS also incorporates a programmable automatic start time delay. RELAY ALARMS CARD Isolated volt-free dry contacts indicate the UPS operating status and the presence of alarm conditions. Fully programmable to facilitate the capture of a diverse range of operating and alarm conditions. Opto-isolated inputs allow the UPS to be controlled remotely. RS232/RS485 SERIAL PORT The UPS operating parameters can be observed and controlled locally using an RS232/RS485 communications port. Real time notification of changes in UPS status reported to users by SMS or e-mail. SNMP NETWORK CARD Enables monitoring and control of the UPS operation by LAN or Internet connection. Green ECO Mode of Operation The E800 series UPS can be operated in high efficiency ECO mode (98%) providing green energy savings through reduced power consumption. REMOTE LCD & LED MIMIC PANEL Facilitates the monitoring and control of the UPS operations, events and parameters from a remote location. Power interruptions are costly to every business Regardless of whether the origin is a short or long interruption, a voltage dip, a transient or other voltage disturbance, the consequence is an outage. Interruption duration is important but much more so is the frequency of power quality problems and the serious impact they may have on your businesses ability to operate. It is estimated that power quality problems cost industry and commerce in the EU about 10 billion per annum while expenditure on preventative measures is less than 5 % of this. The question is the obvious one: ‘How much money should be invested in prevention to balance the risk of failure?’ and the answer depends on the nature of the business. How much money do I risk to lose with each fault? Table 1.1 Cost of voltage dips Industry Duration Cost/sag UK Steelworks 30% fo 3.5 cycles £250 000 US glass plant Less than 1 s €200 000 US computer center 2 s €600 000 US car plant Annual exposure €10m South Africa (country) Annual exposure €3bn Table 1.2 Cost of voltage dips (Reproduced From Leonardo Power Quality Application Guide - Part 2.1, Copper Development Association) Industry Typcial financial loss per event (€000) Semiconductor production 3800 Financial trading 6000 per hour Computer center 750 Telecommunications 30 per minute Steelworks 350 Glass manufacture 250 Handbook of Power Quality, By Angelo Baggini, 2008, P. 6558 Any malfunction or wear to the UPS systems components reduces the availability of its power.
