Barry and Tracy Hatton of Oak Ridge Marina, hosted the 1st Annual Salute to Spring, business appreciation night Thursday, February 16. The event drew a packed house. In addition to the full
buffet and door prizes, the Hatton’s recognized the Oak Ridge
staff and numerous guides and businesses. According to Barry,
although guides refer a lot of people to Oak Ridge, the most referrals came from Lake Fork Marina. To show their appreciation
they presented Dana Donahue of Lake Fork Marina with a gift
certificate.

March
Madness
is here everyone!
What an exciting time of year to
be at Lake Fork.
Spring has arrived and Lake
Fork is primed up
for another great
spawning season.
Many anglers have
waited all winter
for this month to come and the
great fishing that goes along
with it. If you are after a big
bass, now is the time. For those
looking for a place to have some
fun this month, come on out to
Lake Fork with your friends or
family to enjoy some time away
this spring break! Here are
some tips and techniques that
will hopefully help you land the
fish of your dreams!
The lake is currently
5.5 feet low. Despite recent
rains bringing the lake up about
2 feet, we could definitely use
some more rain. Water tem-
peratures have been in the high
50’s to low 60’s lately due to a
relatively mild winter. I expect
with the full moon upon us
that a number of fish will begin
spawning soon. The water clarity is very stained in the northern creek arms but clears as you
get to the south end.
I am targeting both prespawn as well as spawning fish
right now. One of my best baits
lately has been a square billed
crank bait. I am using the new
Talon Shibui 1.5 in chartreuse
splatter back or dirty ghost colors www.talonlures.com . This
is an awesome bait for work-
ing through the shallows. I like
to target flats, points, shallow
drains, or ditches in spawning creeks from 2-6 feet deep.
The key to catching fish on this
bait is allowing it to come into
contact with timber. Bouncing
it into any trees on the retrieve
will draw more strikes. On real
windy spring days I am also
breaking out the Talon Shibui
spinner bait. A chartreuse/white
double willow in 3/8 or 1/2 oz
sizes as done well in the same
areas. If the fish are hesitant to
bite these I know I can always
do well on a chatter bait in the
same size and color. It has a lot
more vibration and will agitate
a strike out of even the most
stubborn fish. When I am able
to find the right water and especially on windy days I opt
for a swim bait to target the
big females. A Berkley Hollow
Belly is hard to beat! I like the
5” and 6” models best this time
of year and my favorite colors
are pearl, gizzard shad, and ayu.
March 2012
Slow roll this bait on the shallowest windy banks you can
find this spring and you will be
surprised at the fish you catch!
When the fish are not
active on moving baits in the
spring it’s time to sloooowwww way down. And when I say
“slow” I mean fish very slow. As
the fish move out of prespawn
and into their spawning activity
they will become more territorial than anything. Putting a bait
in their nests or close to where
they are and leaving it lay there
will entice them to pick it up and
move it out of the bedding area.
On the contrary if you move it
around a lot they will just watch
it go by. So fishing slow is very
important. Look for the fish to be
spawning in 2-8 feet of water
on standing timber, lay downs,
docks and any re-emerging
grass. Some of my favorite
baits to flip and pitch are the
new Berkley Havoc and Powerbait. A Texas rigged Berkley
Havoc Craw Fatty or Pit Boss
is very effective right now. Best
colors are black/blue, green
pumpkin, Okeechobee craw,
and Big Texan www.berkleyfishing.com I will rig mine with
a 4/0 wide gap hook and 5/16
oz Elite Tungsten weight on 17
lb Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon
line. My most favorite new set
up to throw this on is the Abu
Garcia Revo MGX paired with
a 7’1”-7’3” Abu Garcia Villian rod. If you had a chance
to come by and see me at the
Bassmasters Classic you know
how excited I am about this
awesome new combo and its
overall weight of 10 ounces.
Another new product
that I am excited about is the
new Powerbait “Thief”. This
is another awesome new flipping bait from Berkley that will
catch a lot of fish presented in
the same way as the previous
mentioned Havoc. If the fish
are finicky and will not bite the

bigger soft plastics I will often downsize to a 3/16-1/4 oz
shaky head or drop shot rig. A
great bait for these is the 4” or
6” Havoc Bottom Hopper. For
anyone that is coming out to
fish the tournaments, this is a
very effective worm for catching under the slot fish. Also, If
you are sight fishing for bass
and find one that will not bite
try one of these and you may be
surprised how aggressively the
bite it.

Stan Kuhn’s
Catfish and Crappie Report
March madness is here and I’m
not talking about basketball.
I’m talking March madness on
Lake Fork. Lots and lots of fisherman have come from all over
to fish Lake Fork. This time of
year is very busy for all stores
and businesses around the lake.
The spawn for bass,
crappie, and I guess we got to
throw in the white bass now, is
getting close. The water temp
is getting up into the mid 50’s
now and the lake level is trying
to come up. We are still about
5½ ft. low, but that’s better than
9 ft. low.
We need one of those
really big rainstorms where it
drops about 5 in. on us and the
lake will get back to normal.
The heavy rains keep going
around and misses Lake Fork.
Last year it was late
April and May when I started
catching catfish, so I have been
concentrating on catching crappie. We have also been catching some really big white bass.
I like to fish around the bridge
columns this time of year as the
concrete will heat up the water which draw in the shad and
that’s where the crappie will
hang until they really move up
shallow to spawn.
Minnows and jigs have
been catching the fish. Blue/
grey and blue/cinnamon have
been good colors, but that will
change each day. It seems the
bigger crappie have come on
the minnows.
I had a really nice trip
on Feb. 20 with Todd Tabat, Jake
Ksobiech and Alex Elworthy,
owners and guides of Atikwa
Lake Lodge in Canada. It was
nice sharing stories of our fishing experiences with each other.
We had an extremely windy day
to fish with winds up in the 20
to 25 range. It was tough fishing, but we still caught 46 crappie and white bass. Todd also
caught one of the biggest bass
he has ever landed.
One of these days I’m
going to go to Canada and go
on a fishing trip. It would be a
trip that I’ve always wanted to
do, and I’m sure Todd at Atikwa
Lodge can put me on some fish.
Todd’s number is 1-800-680-
GOOD
SELECTION
8423 if you are interested in going to Canada fishing,
Well I’m sure glad
to be getting back to fishing.
I love taking people out fishing and putting them on some
fish. Some days are harder than
others due to high winds, but
remember the wind only hurts
the fisherman, not the fish. I’ve
caught some really nice fish
in the wind. When there is no
wind it really gets tough sometimes.
If you are interested in
going crappie fishing you can
reach me at 903-383-2921. A
crappie lunch comes with all
my trips. I supply all the bait,
tackle and clean all your fish
for you to take home. Until next
month, good fishing and fish
friendly.

Trophy Bass Management Symposium March 24 at TFFC
ATHENS – Private bass pond managers will get
a behind-the scenes look at how Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department (TPWD) inland fisheries
biologists monitor fish populations and care for
trophy bass at a statewide symposium set for
March 23—24, 2012, at the Texas Freshwater
Fisheries Center (TFFC) in Athens.
“There are more than a million private
impoundments in the state, many of which could
be used for increased recreation through bass
fishing with better management,” said Dr. Billy
Higginbotham, Texas AgriLife Extension wildlife and fisheries specialist. “As many landowners have learned, you just don’t stock a pond or
lake with largemouth bass and automatically get
trophy-size fish.”
Growing big fish takes top management,
which can be learned at “Bass Tech: The Technology to Manage for Success.” Participants
may register online at http://agriliferegister.tamu.
edu (enter the keyword “bass”) or by calling
(979) 845-2604. There is a fee for attendance.
In addition to session presentations, attendees will be able to observe a TPWD fisheries management crew electrofish on Lake Athens
and demonstrate how to obtain and record data
necessary for managing a bass population.
Also included will be a behind-thescenes tour of the Toyota ShareLunker holding
facility at TFFC. The “Lunker Bunker” is where
bass weighing 13 pounds or more are cared for
and spawned as part of a selective breeding program. This tour will take place from 3—5 p.m.
March 23.
Session presentations March 24 will
include Basic Pond Ecology, Water Quality,
Pond Fertilization, Do-It-Yourself Fish Population Assessment and Corrective Stockings,
Better Bass Fishing Through Genetics, Trophy
Bass Management, Identifying and Controlling
Nuisance Wildlife, Aquatic Weed Identification
and Control, and Aging Largemouth Bass Using
Otoliths.
Instructors include wildlife and fisheries experts with AgriLife Extension, TPWD and
American Sport Fish Hatchery, a southeastern
U.S. stocking and pond maintenance service.
A similar symposium was held in 2008.
“The main difference this year is that we’ve
trimmed some topics based on participant
evaluations,” Higginbotham said. “The one-day
program means participants won’t have to go to
the expense and trouble of spending the night if
they don’t want to.”
Registration will be from 7-8 a.m. on
March 24. The symposium will conclude at 5
p.m. A catered lunch and break refreshments are
included in the registration fee.
n addition, each registrant will receive a
CD of the proceedings, speaker notes and a copy
of Higginbotham’s “Wildlife and Fish Management Calendar.”
Texas Department of Agriculture private
pesticide applicator license holders can earn
one continuing education unit in integrated pest
management.
TFFC is four miles east of Athens and
75 miles southeast of Dallas. More information
on the center can be found at http://www.tpwd.
state.tx.us/spdest/visitorcenters/tffc/.
For more information on the symposium, or to register by regular mail and check,

Getting started
By Luke Clayton
Getting started right is important, regardless the endeavor. Take
an academic such as algebra for instance. Without proper instructions from the get-go, learning algebra is impossible. One has to
build on the basics before it’s possible to advance.
This axiom is especially true when it comes to learning to properly shoot a bow. There are a few basics that must be learned and
mastered before skills improve and arrows can be shot into tight
groups at distant yardages. Steve Trimble with All Star Archery
makes his living setting up bows to perfectly fit shooters of all
ages and, if they are newcomers to the sport, giving instructions
that help them quickly become proficient shooters. I recently took
my 10 year old grandson Jack Zimmerman over to get his new
Mathews Genesis bow set up.
Jack is not a newcomer to the outdoors, he’s taken several whitetail deer while rifle hunting with his fraternal grandfather. Jack is
a very patient, studious young hunter. He’s learned to be quiet and
still when hunting and moves only when game is not looking his
direction. He’s steady as a rock during the shot for someone so
young and veteran hunters I know enjoy listening to Jack tell about
his hunts. There’s no ‘Hollywooding’ when Jack tells his story. It’s
all nuts and bolts with plenty of details.
Bow tech Steve Trimble with All Star Archery helps young Jack
Zimmerman get set up with his first bow. Photo by Luke Clayton
Jack is reverent when he approaches an animal he has killed.
He understands and used the word “killed’, one ‘harvests’ grain or
vegetables. Animals must be killed before they can be transformed
into hot links or chicken fried steaks! Even at his young age, he
understands the gravity of his actions. He is aware that taking meat
from the wild for his family to enjoy is an honorable act. He understands that some of his friends think that the steaks and roasts their
mothers prepare for dinner magically appear at the meat counter
of the local grocery. Jack has learned from hunting that in order
to enjoy a venison steak dinner, an animal must be killed. He understands man is at his core, a hunter just like the coyote or bobcat. Many in today’s urban world have been so displaced from the
natural world that they no longer feel the hunter’s call but, deep,
deep in their genetics, it’s still there. Jack fully understands the
venison or wild pork he is fortunate enough to take for his family
to eat could just as easily be killed by a roving pack of coyotes or,
a big male bob cat; it’s nature’s way.
Jack is extremely observant regardless whether receiving instructions from his basketball coaches or, learning the basics of a brand
new sport. He was full of questions as he observed “Mr. Steve”

string peep on his new bow.
While watching Trimble put
the finishing touches on his
bow, Jack asked questions such
as “What keeps that little peep
sight in the string?” and “What
makes the end of that little pin
so bright?” Steve took the time
to answer them all, and then
he handed the bow to Jack and
asked him to step over to the
shooting range. It was time for
some instructions.
I was honored to be present
when my grandson loosed his
first arrow from his fully rigged
bow. Trimble instructed him not
to grip the bow too tightly and
to gently squeeze the release
when the sight pin, the center
of the peep sight and the target
are in perfect alignment. “Make
sure and keep your finger behind the trigger release so you
won’t accidently release the arrow while drawing the bow.”
My mind back tracked many
years ago to when I received the
same basic instructions. Some
things never change and the basics of archery have remained
as constant as the Polar Star
throughout the ages. Pulleys,
peep sights and arrow rests are
modern additions to the bow
but skills necessary in making
the arrow fly true remain the
same.
Jack heard the resounding
‘whack’ as the arrow impacted
the target, not far from where
he was aiming. His next two arrows grouped very close to the
first. Trimble instructed his new
student to continue practicing
as often as possible. “Concentrate on the shooting form I’ve
shown you and don’t over do
your practice.” instructs Trim-
ble. “ Shoot 5 or 6 arrows and
then rest a couple minutes. It’s
better to shoot 10 arrows using
perfect form and making sure to
execute each shot to the best of
your ability than to randomly
shoot three times that many.”
Jack’s serious bow training is
underway. He left ‘Mr. Steve”
with a bow that was expertly
rigged and ready to shoot. He’s
learned that when he employs
the basics of proper shooting
form, he is quite capable of hitting his target at closer yardages. Longer range shooting and,
ultimately hunting with his bow
will come a bit later, after many
enjoyable hours of practice.
Here are a few things Jack will
learn as he perfects his shooting
skills and ultimately, makes the
decision to hunt with his bow.
I’m positive he will become
a bow hunter. It’s in his make
up, he loves a challenge and he
loves to hunt.
*One becomes a much better hunter when he or she decides to accept the challenge
of hunting with the bow. It’s
important to get close, really
close, usually inside 30 yards of
game before releasing an arrow
tipped with a broad head. A bow
hunter doesn’t snipe game from
a distance, he learns to play
the wind, use camouflage and
watch the animal’s body language to get within bow range.
*Tracking is an intricate part
of bow hunting. Jack will learn
D
TIREANLUBE
All Through The House
Gifts • Antiques • Collectibles
to examine the arrow after the
shot on game to determine exactly where the animal was hit.
He will learn to follow a sometime very sparse blood trail to
recover his animal. He’ll learn
to make ever widening circles
ahead of an animal he’s trailing
to pick up the trail.
* He will learn to be even more
patient when hunting. He is partaking in a sport in which there
is seldom instance gratification.
He will pass shots inside 20
yards of game animals simply
because they do not present the
right broadside or quartering
shot. He’ll learn a great deal
about the anatomy of the animals he hunts.
* When he harvests his first
game animal with stick and
string, he will join the ranks of
those of us that choose to hunt
with a more basic, more challenging method. He will become a kindred spirit with the
Native American, whose blood
still cruise his veins after several generations.
And, I’m betting Jack won’t
ever forget that morning he
spent with ‘Mr. Steve’, getting his new bow rigged and
watching his first arrow reach
its mark! Jack’s journey has begun!

Return to the Cedar Breaks
By Luke Clayton
Vera, Texas- This past week,
my friend Bob Hood and I
drove into the tiny settlement of
Vera, located a few miles west
of Seymour. The countryside
was gently rolling farm and
ranch land with winter wheat
fields on either side of the road.
A newcomer to this area would
be hard pressed to believe that
just a few miles to the west
lay some of the most ruggedly
beautiful country in this part of
the country, the Cedar Breaks!
Bob and I were heading to one
of our favorite places to hunt,
Ranger Creek Ranch. We both
were wrapping up a very busy
fall/winter hunting schedule
and a couple days relaxing and
hunting for javelina at Ranger
Creek had been very much anticipated.
The fact that there is a very
healthy population of Javelina
in this country comes as a surprise to many folks. Most hunters in quest of Javelina head
to the brush country of south
Texas or Arizona to hunt these
spunky pigs. The collared peccary actually is not in the swine
family at all but through the
years, it’s acquired the name of
bush pig, I’m sure because they
look so much like swine. These
tough little critters are popular
with bow hunters. They are a
bit easier to stalk that are feral
hogs.
Ranger Creek Ranch has
several areas designated for
archery only hunting. Feeders
with pop up or brush ground sprinkle some corn along the
blinds are constructed to inter- road.” Says Jack,” If passing

and from work.

within bow range.”
I was in high hopes of arrowing
my first “Cedar Breaks” bush
pig. Later that afternoon, I settled into a ground blind near a
feeder. Corn was on the ground,
a good fifty yards either side
of my set up. If Javelina came
anywhere near my stand, the
corn would surely stop them.
I’d been in the blind about an
hour when two Javelina came
trotting out of the brush, straight
to the corn! When they noticed
my blind, both stared intently
straight at me for a long thirty
seconds. Both were at this time
15 yards away. They were obviously ‘wired’ but tasty kernels
of corn finally got the best of
them and they began feeding.
At about 14 yards, what I
considered to be a slam dunk
bow shot, the larger of the two
pigs turned broadside. I drew
my Mathews Z7 bow and the
Javelina instantly picked up on
the movement and faced me.
Again, the little pig stared me
down, this time almost face to
face. I was at full draw and I
froze, waiting for him to turn
sideways and give me a shot.
After what seemed a very long
time, the Javelina quartered
slightly and I released the arrow. A Javelina is quick, VERY
quick. The instant I squeezed
the release, the pig turned
ninety degrees to the right. My
arrow hit the ground exactly
where the pig had been standing! It’s pretty disheartening to
practice on an almost daily basis and become proficient with
the bow from point blank out
to 50 yards and then, miss an
important shot at 14 yards! But,
that’s hunting. I learned a long

time ago not to fret too much
over missed shots.
Just before dark, a sounder
of 15 feral hogs came by and
cleaned up the corn, and then
they departed as quickly as
they had appeared. A couple
of minutes later, a little black
boar came busting through the
brush, obviously looking for
the rest of the pack. He put on
a show for me as he darted here
and there sniffing the ground.
He finally picked up the scent
of the hogs and galloped off to
join them. Several long bearded
gobblers came by to peck on
the corn and I watched a big 12
point whitetail cross about 30
yards out that afternoon. It was
a very good hunt and I enjoyed
just being there to soak up the
sights and sounds of the wild,
remote country.
I’d hoped to have pictures of
a ‘big’ 50 pound Javelina boar
to accompany this article but
that was not in the cards on this
hunt. Hood and I know how to
make the most of a late winter
outing though! Ranell Walker,
the owner who manages the
hunting on the ranch had turned
the place over to us. We’ve
hunted here long enough to
know our way around and our
guide had done a very good job
getting us orientated. She had
a couple of big steaks cut from
beef raised on the ranch in the
refrigerator. After the hunt, Bob
and I built a mesquite wood fire
in the outdoor pit and slowly
cooked the steaks to perfection. Fresh green beans and big
baked potatoes rounded out the
evening meal.
As a couple of old outdoors
writers, Hood and I have the opportunity to spend a great deal
of time in the wide open spaces
but we are both fond of hunting this big, sprawling piece
of wild country. As the steaks
sizzled over mesquite coals, we
cast eyes toward the black night
sky. I know of few experiences
that are as humbling as looking
up into the heavens on a cold
starry night.
Weather the next morning was
less than ideal, a wet cold front
had pushed through the area. We
packed up around mid morning
for the return trip home. We’d
not taken a Javelina but I’d
had the opportunity. That was
enough. We began planning our
next hunt on the ranch for one
of those big gobblers. Spring
turkey season is just a little over
one month away!

DNA testing at the time revealed the fish to be pure Florida largemouth.
The explosion of big

roots in years past. “I believe a
combination of our Florida bass
stocking program and good
habitat have led to great production over the years,” said Marcos DeJesus, Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department’s fisheries
biologist in charge of managing
the lake’s fishery. “There were
probably a couple of good year
classes several years ago, and
some of those individuals are
now breaking that ShareLunker

Recent advances in
DNA technology now allow
TPWD to determine if a fish
entered into the Toyota ShareLunker program is an offspring
of a previous ShareLunker. This
technology has been available
only since 2005, and it takes
seven to 10 years for a bass to
reach 13 pounds and be eligible
for the program. “We are looking forward to the day when we
get the DNA test results from a

Anyone legally catching a 13-pound or bigger largemouth bass from Texas waters,
public or private, between
October 1 and April 30 may
submit the fish to the Toyota

Tyler Audubon, Texas Freshwater
Fisheries Center to Sponsor Bird Walk
ATHENS—The Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center and Tyler Audubon are teaming up for a special bird walk in Athens
on Saturday, March 17.
The walk should offer the opportunity to see about 50
species of birds, including waterfowl, early spring migrants,
sparrows and raptors, according to TFFC’s Jim Booker, who
will lead the walk. The walk will be suitable for beginners.
“We will meet at 7:30 a.m. at the public boat ramp on
Lake Athens in front of the Marina Restaurant and RV Park,”
Booker said. “To get there from Tyler, take Texas 31 west until you reach Loop 7. Turn left onto Loop 7 and then take the
first exit, FM 2495. Turn left again and go about two miles,
and you will cross over an arm of Lake Athens. Take the first
right after crossing over the lake, and follow the road to the
boat ramp and parking area.”
The walk will explore the lakeshore areas first and then
proceed to habitats on the grounds of the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center. Admission to TFFC is $5.50 for adults,
$4.50 for seniors. The walk will cover about one mile on flat
ground and will end around noon. Picnic facilities are available at TFFC, a food vendor will be at the center that day,
and the Marina Restaurant serves great food.

TPWD’s Craig Bonds Addresses LFSA
Craig Bonds, Region 3 Director, Texas Parks & Wildlife addressed
the membership regarding a new national initiative for habitat conservation and restoration. The following excerpts are from his remarks.
The National Fish Habitat Action Initiative is a strategic plan and
vision for Fish Habitat Conservation in the United States. This initiative was modeled after the successful North American Waterfowl
Management Plan, which has provided the framework for improved
habitat and waterfowl populations since the 1980s.
Reservoirs are present in every state and they account for about
70% of the fishing recreation that occurs in this country. These systems provide water, flood control, and outdoor recreation to millions
of citizens.
The economic impact, value, and importance of reservoirs in this country cannot be understated.
Improving fish habitat in these systems is critical.
Unfortunately, our fish habitats are currently under siege. Demands for water are increasing in
many states. Our reservoirs are also aging and losing woody cover to natural decay and physical
removal. Natural shorelines are being replaced by bulk heading. Increased urbanization also will
place additional stress on our fish habitats in our future. Invasive species, such as giant salvinia,
further threaten the health of our aquatic systems and good fishing.
The bottom line is that state fish and game agencies simply do not have the resources to battle
these problems alone. We think we’ve created some great fisheries through fishing regulations and
stocking here, and we will continue to do that, but we need to find ways to protect and enhance our
fish habitats or none of that will really matter. Habitat improvements are very expensive and labor
intensive.
The LFSA has always been ready to step forward and offer its resources for the protection of Lake
Fork. I believe your involvement in the National Fish Habitat Action Initiative would be a continuation of your support of this great fishery.
The LFSA plans to consider Craig’s suggestion at our March meeting.

Congratulations to LFSA Member Sue Parrish
On April 28, LFSA member Sue Parrish will be inducted into
the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame. Sue was girl’s varsity basketball coach at Warren Central High School from 1979 to
1989 where her teams won 189
games, 10 sectional championships, were the 1984 state runners up in an overtime loss. Her
teams won consecutive Marion
County Championships in 1983,
‘84 and ’85. Sue had previously
been elected to the Warren Central Athletic Hall of Fame. Sue,
the LFSA is proud for you.
Pilot Club Chili Cook-off
The LFSA team made a big splash at the Chili Cook-off on
January 27th. The team took first place in the Judge’s category as
well as first place from the Grand Marshall category. While not
revealing his recipe, Chili Chef Sam Scroggins said, “I knew we
had a winner this year.”
This year’s theme of “Great Bowls of Fire” featured the music
of “The Killer”, Jerry Lee Lewis. The guys were decked out in
their best Killer shirts, while Sandra sported a great Poodle Skirt.
Congratulation team, you made us proud. Oh, by the way, this
group also won the Rowdiest Bunch award. No surprise there.

The Emory Eagle Fest Lake Fork boat tour
was held January 28. Three boats manned
by LFSA members Larry Marler, Bart Martin, Sam Scroggins, Sandra Livingston, Arlan

lake in search of eagles,
Each boat made several trips around the
lake and the passengers were not disappointed. Each time out we were able to sight our
