We are fortunate to serve an increasing number of students in new and exciting ways as we seek to live and bear witness to our mission of preparing leaders for the transformation of society. Fiscal Year 2012 was another year of great expansion while remaining steadfast in our mission. – We welcomed a record number of students, making Concordia the fastest growing university in Oregon and within the Concordia University System. – We physically increased capacity with the opening of the School of Law building in Boise and the Hilken Community Stadium in Portland. – We also celebrated the renovation of the Luther Hall Science Labs, a much needed upgrade necessary to serve the continued growth of our science and nursing programs. – We are also pleased to be recognized for the fourth time by the Corporation for National & Community Service as a member of The President’s Community Service Honor Roll. In addition, Concordia University was recognized in Washington Monthly Magazine for the third consecutive year in the top ten Master’s Level universities for community service, based on total hours of community service. We topped the list in 2010 and ranked fifth in 2012. As we celebrate the great successes of 2012, we look to 2013 with growing anticipation of the many new opportunities that lay before our Concordia University community. In the coming year, we will greet the second class of law students in Boise; we anticipate setting even more enrollment records; and we will joyfully strengthen our partnerships in northeast Portland, particularly with our neighbor, PreK-8 Faubion School. Thank you for your generous support of Concordia’s mission and most importantly, the support you give to our students. Your efforts and your energy are a testament to the power of our mission and the importance of our shared future. As our ministry has now reached its 108th academic year – the Concordia of 2012 may look different from that of 1905, but our mission and our purpose is rooted in the same Lutheran heritage and sense of purpose of a century ago – we give thanks to God for you and we look forward to another year of transformation! Charles E. Schlimpert, Ph.D. President, Concordia University Robert W. Fowls Chairman, Board of Regents C o n c o rd i a U n i v ers i ty A n n ual R ep o rt & H o n o r R o ll – 3 Concordia University Concordia University is blessed by the leadership of the Board of Regents and the Foundation Board of Directors. The university is governed by the Board of Regents, elected by the conventions of the Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod, the Northwest District, and the current board. The Regents meet throughout the year to strategize, plan, and set forth policies that are in turn carried out by the President, who is an advisory member to the Board. The Board of Directors of the Concordia University Foundation is comprised of dedicated individuals with an affinity and passion to serve the mission of the university. The Foundation Directors oversee the overall business affairs of the Foundation and meet at various times throughout the year to inform, discuss, and strategize the goals and activities of the Foundation. Although Concordia University’s two governing boards are separate entities, starting in Fiscal Year 2012, they began to meet simultaneously and in cooperation with each other. Together, the university’s Regents and Foundation Directors are referred to as the Council of Trustees. The men and women serving the university through these leadership roles have fostered our growth and provided the vision that has led Concordia to this historic and exciting time. We thank them for their service and their leadership to the Concordia community and students. 4 COUNCIL OF TRUSTEES Board of Regents Rev. Dennis Bohren Gresham, Oregon Mr. Jack J. After a year of serving on a musical ministry team across the United States and Southeast Asia, she taught a 5th/6th grade split class at Trinity Lutheran School in Paso Robles, CA. After teaching for four years, Amy moved back to Oregon to be closer to her family and an opportunity to work in the office of admission at Concordia on a shortterm assignment that was intended to last for only two months. Those two months have turned into over eleven years of serving incoming students in the office of admission – first working with freshman students and then with graduate students. Amy has served as the director of graduate admission for the last four years and recently earned her M.Ed. in leadership from Concordia. When asked why she supports the university with monthly donations, she shared: “As an undergraduate student, I received generous scholarships from Concordia University. I would never have been able to earn my undergraduate degree without that support. My time as a CU student helped me not only earn a well-respected degree and prepare me for several professions; it also helped shape me as a person. I matured from an adolescent into a young adult, developed life-long friendships, was challenged and supported by professors and staff who were invested in my academic and personal growth, and grew in my relationship with Christ. I am blessed to continue to be a part of the Concordia community and feel privileged to support current students and programs monetarily the way I was once supported.” It's because of our faculty and staff, and people like Amy, that we're able to transform society. Not only do Concordia University faculty and staff give generously of their time and talents, but did you know that during the 2012 Fiscal Year current and former members of the faculty and staff committed $ 1 4 7 , 2 3 8 in gifts and pledges to the mission of Concordia? Throughout the year, many of our alumni, parents, and friends take advantage of their employer’s matching gift program and that extra step makes a significant difference in our ability to improve the lives of our students. In addition to matching an employee’s charitable donations, many organizations encourage volunteer service by providing matching funds for volunteer service hours. I grew up in Puyallup, Washington with my parents and two younger sisters, and moved to Portland in 2004 when I started at Concordia. I have worked in retail management and human resources for the last four years and currently work as a training and hiring manager for Adidas. I am also excited about an upcoming career change as I hope to begin the master of arts in teaching program at Concordia this January! I now live in Northwest Portland with my husband, Ryan. I choose to donate to Concordia when I am able because I am so proud to be a Concordia University alum and am so genuinely thankful for the opportunities the school provided me. At Concordia, I built lifelong relationships with peers, staff, and professors through an intimate learning environment in which I felt valued as an individual, not as a number. Opportunities abounded to become involved in my school, develop myself, and connect with the community around me, all while earning a high caliber education. I have stayed up to date on changes at the school over the last few years, and have been absolutely thrilled to see the growth and the increased resources available to students and to the Concordia neighborhood as a whole. My enthusiasm for the school has only grown as I have watched this transformation occur, and it is important to me to contribute to it as much as I am able at this time. My hope is that anything I am able to give goes toward continued growth that positively impacts the student body, professors, and the community, and enables Concordia to provide the same, if not better, experience that forever changed the person I am today.” – Francesca Aultman ’08 20 – A n n ual G i v i n g H o n o r R o ll Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Tigard, OR Our Savior Lutheran Church, Tacoma, WA Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Beaverton, OR Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Tacoma, WA Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Portland, OR Redeemer Lutheran Church, Kimberly, ID Redeemer Lutheran Church, Richland, WA Redeemer Lutheran Church Lydia Guild, Richland, WA Richland Lutheran Church, Richland, WA St. John Lutheran Church, Palmer, AK St. Peter the Fisherman Lutheran Church, Lincoln City, OR Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Snohomish, WA Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, Rathdrum, ID Southern Idaho Pastor's Conference St. John Lutheran Church, Vancouver, WA St. Luke Lutheran Church, Surrey, BC St. Paul Lutheran Church, Wenatchee, WA St. Paul Lutheran Church Guild, Grants Pass, OR St. Peter Lutheran Church, Medford, OR Star of the North Lutheran Church LWML, Kenai, AK Trinity Lutheran Church, Cottage Grove, OR Trinity Lutheran Church, Hillsboro, OR Triumphant King Lutheran Church, Lake Oswego, OR Vancouver Apostolic Lutheran Church, Vancouver, WA Zion Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Odessa, WA Zion Lutheran Church, Hillsboro, OR Zion Lutheran Church, Portland, OR Zion Lutheran Church Guild, Portland, OR Zion Lutheran School, Corvallis, OR Corporations & Foundations Aho Construction AHSGR - Central Oklahoma Chapter AHSGR - SE Wisconsin Chapter Alma Chocolates Amica Companies Foundation Arcane Arts AT&T Foundation ATF Pierson Family Trust Backspace Cafe Besemer Family Revocable Trust BJ amd DG Garcia Family Trust Black Parent Initiative Bob's Red Mill Brazilian Dimensional Embroidery International Guild CalPortland Company Cascade Professional Alliance Chevron Matching Gifts Plan Chizek Trucking, Inc. These labs have expanded our ability for student research in tissue culture, analytical chemistry, and biology.
