From the Manager
Now that summer is in full swing I would like to reflect on where we were just a few months ago and where we are
headed as a Club. First we all know that the course was devastated last October and we started the rebuilding process again just two years after the historic Halloween Flood of 2013. I appreciate everyone’s cooperation and patience playing #9 Original as a substitute hole while #16 green is being rebuilt. #16 green should be open for play
around late August. The Original Front Nine greens were reconstructed to be more flood friendly with the removal
of sand bunkers and using old school push up green technology. The green surrounds will be fully grassed in and
greens ready for sprigs by the first week in July. With a very aggressive grow in planned we should see the Original Front Nine
open on Labor Day Weekend. We have added a short tee course to the Original Front Nine layout that will be enjoyed by all skill
levels.
The Fitness Center is now open and has been received very favorably. If you have not already had the chance, you should stop in and
see what the New Fitness Center has to offer! Construction on the New Golf Pro Shop should be complete the second week of July
to make way for the New Legends Grille and Legends Lounge with a completion date of Labor Day Weekend. The New Grille and
Lounge will be the main epicenter for dining and enjoying a cocktail with plenty of big screen televisions in the New Legends
Lounge. Why go anywhere else for a festive atmosphere? New menu offerings for the Lounge and Grille are planned to make your
dining experience second to none.
We also brought in a New Fleet of E-Z-GO golf carts in May and 2 New beverage carts will arrive in July. Last and not least a New
Short Game Practice Facility was added next to the current chipping green and #1 Original fairway. As you can see we are truly in a
special time here at Onion Creek Club as we are enjoying the “Reinvention of Onion Creek” and will soon enjoy all the new benefits
the Club will have to offer.
Hope to see you at the Club soon!

Golf News
Jason Boydston, PGA Head Golf Professional
Dear Members,
Thank you again for your continued welcome to the club. I hope everyone is enjoying their summer as we welcome the drier conditions.
These past two months have been a very busy time for the club and the course. During that time we battled the typical April and May weather,
but with the help of Ryan and his team, we were able to offer 18 quality holes for most of the spring season. The renovation for the new Pro
Shop and bag room are well underway, with the bag room nearing full completion. As we move into July, we expect to begin transitioning to
the new Pro Shop. I am excited to be able to offer a fresh look and feel to your golfing and buying experience here at OCC.
We have had two successful member tournaments this month, MGA Willard Connolly and the Outlaw Chicken open. Both events were able
to attain full fields, which provided for excellent competition and comradery. The MGA Willard Connolly is one of our few match play
format tournaments of the year. Congratulations to Perry Woolley and John Jenkin on their victory against Pete League and Mark Friesen for
the Willard Connolly Match Play Title. The next MGA event will be the Legends Tournament held on Saturday, July 23 rd. The Chicken Open
started out with an evening of delicious BBQ and multiple competitive contests, including a 3-man team shootout. The official Chicken Open
tournament was held the next day, with all players competing in a modified shamble format. Congratulations to the winners of the shootout
and the Chicken Open!
Be sure to sign up for the July 4th Firecracker Open soon! Sign-up through the pro shop as an individual, as a couple, or
a 4 person team. The tournament will be a 4-person scramble with 50% of the average team handicap used. 32 max
handicap for Women and 28 max handicap for Men. $35+cart for Members, $65 including cart for guests. Entry
includes tournament prizes and buffet lunch. The pro shop can be reached at 512-282-2162 or you can view online here.
Furthermore, we will be hosting a Callaway custom fitting day the weekend after 4 th of July. You will be able to sign up
for 30-minute fitting sessions from 9:00AM-2:00PM on Friday the 8th. Sign-ups for these sessions will be available
through the Pro Shop at 512-282-2162. Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to find clubs that will improve your game!
Our complimentary clinics will continue to be offered throughout the summer. The schedule for these clinics will fluctuate through each
month as we determine the best times and days to host these events. Please click here to view our current schedule and offerings. Hope to see
you on the range!
I plan to hire an experienced Assistant Golf Professional over the next few weeks. This position will be a great benefit to our staff in being
able to provide a consistent and quality experience for the membership. We are currently reviewing multiple applications and will be moving
into the interview stage very soon.
See you at the club soon!

Bobcats in Onion Creek
Bobcats are being seen more frequently within our Onion Creek community. A few years ago, there
was a positive sighting behind Al and Sandy Smith’s home on Wild Dunes Court. Now, bobcats are
being seen walking along the fence line to the right of Hole #5 on our North Course. Onion Creek
resident Anita Pogue took the photographs seen here. I saw one of these beautiful animals walking
along the same fence line about two weeks ago.
I contacted the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department and a TP&W representative told me that bobcats
rarely pose a threat to humans. Just let them be if they are not wandering close to you. However, we
should avoid running from them. Make plenty of noise. Also, if they are close to our homes, we
might use a garden hose and spray water toward them. They should leave peacefully.
A couple of years ago, this is what the TP&W Department wrote: “Bobcats almost certainly won't
eat your children; humans, even tiny ones, are too large and awful-tasting. Bobcats probably won't
eat your dog, unless your dog is a free-ranging tea-cup Chihuahua that -- let's be honest -- totally had
it coming. They will eat your backyard chickens in a heartbeat, so urban farmers beware.” (I wonder
about that person’s experience with Chihuahuas!)
Notwithstanding the above comment , it might be unwise to let small children and pets wander into our natural areas, and especially along
Onion Creek adjacent to holes #3 through #8.
The TP&W Department also has this to offer:
The Bobcat is active largely at night, although they frequently leave cover and begin hunting long before sundown. In hilly country, their
presence can often be detected by their habit of dropping their feces on large rocks on promontories or ridges. Also, like the Mountain Lion,
the males make scrapes-small piles of leaves, sticks, and so forth on which they urinate-along their travel routes, but these scrapes are
smaller. They den in crevices in canyon walls, in boulder piles, or in thickets. The dens can be readily recognized by the strong odor
emanating
from
them.

trees,
Bobcats
seek

when
available.
Their diet consists mainly of small mammals and birds. Among the mammals, wood rats, ground squirrels, mice, and rabbits supply the bulk
of the diet. Although deer occasionally are killed and eaten, most of the deer meat found in Bobcat stomachs has been carrion. They also prey
upon
domestic
sheep,
goats,
and
poultry
but

The breeding season begins usually in February, and after a gestation period of about 60 days the two to seven young are born. Average
litter size is three. The young are well-furred and spotted at birth; their eyes open in about 9 days. The kittens are weaned when about 2
months old. They remain with their mother until early fall, at which time they begin to fend for themselves. Bobcats live in a variety of
habitats, but they favor rocky canyons or outcrops when they are available. Otherwise, they choose thickets for protection and den sites.
These cats are highly adaptable, and in most places have been able to thrive in spite of increasing habitat loss due to human settlement.
The Onion Creek Club grounds and golf course have been declared an Audubon International Certified Cooperative Sanctuary. Please send
comments, photos, unusual sightings and suggestions to [email protected].

Green Committee
Don Milberger & John Moorman
This will be my last Newsletter article for the OCC newsletter. After twenty years here in Austin, Jean and myself will be leaving
Onion Creek Club for Cottonwood CC in Chandler, Arizona. In addition to Austin we have lived in Dallas, Lubbock, Houston,
Cincinnati, and Philadelphia. Now we will now add Chandler, Arizona to the list of cities the Milberger’s have camped in.
Our stay in Austin has been wonderful. We have met so many great people and have truly enjoyed the friendships we developed at
Onion Creek. Jean and I have been fortunate to have belonged to clubs in other cities and without a doubt, the folks at OCC have
been the most friendly.
The new Chairman of the Green Committee will be John Moorman. John, like Jean and myself, has been around Onion Creek for
twenty years. John has been active in the MGA, is the Lead Course and Slope Rater for the Texas Golf Association's Central Texas
Rating Team, and a Golf Rules Official for the Austin area. I am sure John will do a fine job so please give him the support you have
given me.
Jean and I wish each of you the best and if you are in the Chandler, Arizona area, please give us a call. I will now turn over the
remainder of this article to John so that he can keep you up-to-date on the happenings in The Green Committee.
Don & Jean Milberger
As the new Green Committee Chairman, I will strive hard to carry on Don's leadership role with this committee. The Green
Committee has a very committed membership that desires to make OCC an outstanding course for our members to play and brag
about.
Onion Creek Club owes a big "Thank You" to Don and Jean for their efforts on the Green Committee, the MGA and the WGA. They
have worked hard to make OCC a great Club with an excellent member experience.
The rebuilding of the Original Front Nine greens is progressing. The greens are being shaped by a trained and skilled workman. The
new greens will be sprigged as soon as Ryan can obtain the sprigging material from a turf farm. New grass sod is being placed
around the fringe of each green in an effort to maintain its new shape and to prevent more destruction from heavy rains.
Ryan explained the sprigging process to the Green Committee, which is have outlined as follows: Nurseries grow the sprigging
grass as high and thick as possible before cutting it. Then the cuttings are washed and chopped into small pieces then bagged for
deliver to the course. The bags of sprigging material are scattered like pine straw on the new green surface, then cross-cut into the
green surface and heavily watered for 10 days to get them established. Assuming Mother Nature does not throw any bad weather in
our path, we can see new greens in about 8 weeks.
A few reminders to our membership concerns your attention to filling divots and obeying cart traffic signage. Please DO NOT drive
past the signs that direct you to return to the cart path. Please protect the course by following the cart traffic signage.
Please fill your divots with sand—whether on the tee boxes or in the fairways--and repair any ball marks you see on the greens. It
only takes a few seconds to repair divots and/or ball marks and these few seconds will pay great dividends in course playability and
appearance.
As always, if you have any questions about the course, please ask a Green Committee member. If we don’t have the answer, we will
get an answer for you.

Onion Creek Club Ladies Association
Joy De Laveaga
The Onion Creek Club Ladies Association ended its 2015-2016 year with our usual May Style Show, and many of the members donned hats to
reflect the current fascination with hats spurred by the British Royal Family’s trending style. The show this year featured Sarah Summer’s The
Gift Solution, a well-known boutique in Barton Creek Mall. Sarah narrated an impressive show featuring clothes and accessories from her
store. Models were OCCLA members, and Lynn Turner played show tunes on the piano as the models descended the staircase and walked
among the tables allowing members a closer look at the good-looking and smart Spring and Summer fashions. Probably one of the most
successful parts of the presentation was that Sarah brought items for purchase. She sold accessories and many of the clothes worn by models
and took orders for other sizes and colors other than the ones featured.
Before the Style Show began OCCLA awarded the 2016 scholarships. Each year the club raises money for scholarships for club employees
and/or their children who are pursuing further education after high school. This year’s recipients were Rachel Spradling, Nicole Sevin, Ryland
Portele, Tyler Lemons, and Lindsay Ferguson. OCCLA also offered a one time scholarship to a UT student in the graduate nursing program in
memory of our former president, Della Thompson.
The other order of business before the Style Show was the installation of the 2016-2017 officers by outgoing OCCLA president, Ruth Tyner.
These officers are:
President: Pat Rodgers
Vice President: Nikki Harter
Secretary: Darla Rule
Treasurer: Pam Laine
The OCCLA officers and board will meet throughout the summer planning for next season beginning with our luncheon on September 15th at
11:30 AM. All members of the Onion Creek Club are invited to join us for this meeting. For more information on membership contact Brenda
Null, 512-963-2699, or Jo Lancaster, 512-282-0827. OCCLA has a Facebook page featuring pictures of our members and additional
information about the Club.
The purpose of the OCCLA is to promote and conserve the true spirit of good fellowship and to encourage participation in social activities
among its members. The OCCLA raises funds for local, regional or national charities and scholarship programs. For more information on
membership, contact Brenda Null, 512-963-2699 or Jo Lancaster, 512-282-0827.
Luncheon Reservations:
The Club does not take reservations or cancellations for OCCLA Luncheons. Reservations are required and
must be made or cancelled by 2:00 pm on the Tuesday, prior to the luncheon. Please call Lee Witt
512-282-6825, Marion Locke 512-280-6538, or Andrea Jones 512-712-5859. You may also email your
reservations in at [email protected].
Those who wish to be on the Permanent Reservations List, add a guest or cancel should call Gloria Hunter
512-282-6333. Reservations made but not kept or cancelled will be charged to the member.
Bridge Association
Dayle Rohe
The Onion Creek Club Bridge Association celebrates the joys of bridge at OCC with the
Summer Special Event Luncheon and Bridge Tournament, June 30th. Four tables of Party
Bridge and seven tables of Duplicate Bridge will follow a delightful luncheon topped off
with Key Lime Pie. Prior to card play, a drawing for Door Prizes takes center stage. This
month’s prizes include Nothing Bundtlet Cake towers, selected bottles of wine, and gift
cards to a local restaurant. Prizes appeal to men and women and make this feature a
popular part of the luncheon. In addition, Party and Duplicate bridge winners receive cash
prizes provided by OCCBA. And…
…OCCBA extends gratitude and appreciation to the OCC Food and Beverage Staff that
take care to set up the luncheon and bridge areas. And, for the friendly service to help all
of us feel a little bit pampered during these hot summer days, we say thank you!
Interested in playing bridge?
OCCBA is open to all members of Onion Creek Club who are interested in playing Party
bridge and/or Duplicate Bridge. Five regular bridge sessions are featured each month to
provide day and evening game opportunities. Contact Mike Nipper, Treasurer:
512-298-9852, or any of the Section Directors for more information to join.
All OCCBA members are encouraged to participate in these regularly scheduled bridge
events:
Day Party Bridge:

All events meet on 2nd level.
Anyone who needs a partner can call the Section Directors for help to arrange a partner so
that they may participate. For all those who wish to play, Directors would appreciate a
phone call a few days before a scheduled event, to let them know who your partner will
be. All Bridge Association members must be Club members. In addition to weekly bridge
game opportunities, members are invited to play in the Special Events Tournaments for
party and duplicate players.
What’s New for 2016? Bridge Pro-Am “Low Impact” Evening Party Bridge
“I have always wanted to learn how to play bridge.” “I played in College, but don’t
remember much.” “What are all these new bids? “How can I be a better partner?” 2nd Wednesday evenings at the Club will cover
all of these situations, and more.
Per Jill Brown, Pres of OCCBA: “Bridge players of ALL abilities are welcome. We are encouraging new or returning players to
attend to update their bridge skills, and encourage more experienced players to come and help to be a mentor.”
Some of the volunteers who serve as mentors are Gary Gant, Celia McNabb, Kay Zunker, and a special thank you to Jackie Garza.
Jackie mentors throughout the evening, rather than playing herself. This allows players to rotate to her table for instruction any time
during the night. The level of play is trending up, as party bridge and duplicate bridge players improve their knowledge and playing
skills. And, everyone is enjoying a lively evening of bridge. Arrive 6:15pm; play begins at 6:30 pm.
Membership Update: OCCBA welcomes new member Marti Owan.
