By Chloe Harden McDonald’s Coat Drive Sequoyah Times 4 According to www.dosomething.org, 56% of students have personally felt some sort of bullying at school and though physical bullying hits its peak in middle school, the verbal abuse rates remain constant from elementary through high school. The most common reason students are picked on are because of their appearance or body size. Bully behavior includes: teasing, name calling, threatening, social ridiculing and physical aggression. What are we as students at Sequoyah Middle School going to do about this percentage? Can anything be done? Chloe Harden, a 7th grader at Sequoyah has been researching this question this month and has come up with some answers. and are just scared to speak up. A good way to handle someone who is being confrontational or rude is to simply walk up to the victim and ask them to come in your group. Then just walk away. That way you’ve made a stand without being rude or starting a fight. When a bully knows that their actions and words don’t bother you, you take away their power. This is easier said than done. Be brave, be consistent, and always set a good example to make sure that you yourself don’t become a bully. Sitting and doing nothing is almost as bad as bullying itself. “ First, Chloe went to our Teacher of The Year, Ms. O’Brien and asked what to do when we encounter a bully. Ms. O’Brien explained, “Remain calm. Bullies are trying to get a reaction out of you. When a bully says something mean to you, the problem is with the bully, not with you! Most bullies behave that way because they are insecure with themselves, they have been taught at home, or they are trying to gain popularity.” In addition, Chloe interviewed Mrs. Davis. Mrs. Davis got made fun of because of her last name, which is Page. She lived in a small town so you either bullied or got bullied, she explained to Chloe. But you don’t want to be a bully either, yet still want to fit in. Mrs. Davis suggests that you be your own person NOT who your friends want you to be. She was Ms. O’Brien goes on to say, “Therefore it is important to remember that if you see a kid getting bullied by a group, there is probably one leader and the rest are just following friends with everyone and didn’t exclude anybody. She was also nice to everyone even when they weren’t nice to her. Mrs. Davis concludes, “You are either the solution or the problem.” Be the solution. Being the problem just makes it worse, not better. Ms. O’Brien finishes the interview with, “One person CAN make a difference if all of us strive to show kindness and stand up and do the right thing and set a good example, and treat each other as we would want to be treated. A word of caution, never engage anyone who has a weapon or seems emotionally unstable. Just leave and report it to the nearest staff member. This is not being a snitch because reports are anonymous and bullies can’t learn and won’t stop unless we all stand up for kindness and do our part to make a difference in our school. You can make a difference!” You are either the solution or the problem! PAGE 2 Dear Somebody, Boys do you feel like girls are sneaky lets find out! 1.)
