Lake Erie Wine Country All wines start with grapes and all grapes start with “terroir” or the dirt and climate in which the grapes are grown. Lake Erie Wine Country, formerly the Chautauqua-Lake Erie Wine Trail, is located in the largest grape growing region east of the Rockies, now known as America’s Grape Country. It extends roughly 50 miles from Silver Creek, NY (Chautauqua County) to Harborcreek, Pennsylvania (Erie County), and is home to over 24 commercial and estate wineries. The Creation of Terroir – Geological History During the Ice Age, glaciers descended from the north gouging out great trenches and bringing with them tremendous quantities of Canadian soil, rocks and boulders. As temperatures began to warm, these glaciers receded, filling the trenches with glacial melt to form the Great Lakes and leaving in their wake ridges of soil and gravel along the Lake Erie shore. These glacial ridges are the basis for ideal growing conditions for wine grapes and fruit trees. The well-drained gravel-loam soils and the moderating effect of the lake on spring and fall temperatures combine to create the perfect growing environment or “terroir” for healthy vineyards and premium wines and one that is not unlike that found in parts of Germany. Viticultural History For over one hundred years, the area has been home to a vigorous grape and juice industry supplied by 30,000 acres of vineyards. The majority of these vineyards are labruscan grapes, such as Concord and Niagara. Almost five decades ago, Frederick Johnson (Johnson Estate est. 1961) and Doug Moorehead (Presque Isle est. 1968) were pioneers in planting French-American hybrid and vinifera grapes in the area. Passage of the Pennsylvania Limited Winery Act (1968) and the New York Farm Winery Act (1976) sparked the creation of a chateau or “estate” industry and in the last ten years, the planting of premium wine grapes has accelerated, paralleling the growth in the number of wineries. The Wines Today, the twenty-three wineries in Lake Erie Wine Country produce an abundant and diverse list of wines that fall into four categories: Fruity, Native Labruscas: Concord, Ives, Niagara, Delaware French-American Wines: Seyval, Vidal (popular for ice wines), Chancellor, Chambourcin, Marechal Foch European Vinifera Wines: Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Dessert and Specialty Wines: Sweet late harvest and ice wines, fortified wines (Brandy, Port, Sherry), fruit and sparkling wines Guidelines for Groups (of 8 or more) Visiting Wineries: Reservations: Call any winery you plan to visit well in advance. While 2 weeks notice is preferable, any notice is better than none. This is especially important for larger groups. Unannounced group arrivals cause considerable strain on tasting room operations, which may adversely impact customers’ experiences, particularly during peak periods and seasons. Keep in Touch: Have a phone number for each winery you plan to visit. Know each tasting room’s hours and applicable tasting fees in advance. Please call the wineries to warn them if you are NOT on schedule – expect that there may be some adjustments required if your group is late. Be Thoughtful When Scheduling: Schedule tours during weekdays or weekend mornings. Some wineries have small tasting rooms with limited staff. Advance notice enables wineries to plan ahead and arrange for extra staff. Remember to Purchase Wines You Enjoy: Many of the wines you’ll taste are only available in the tasting rooms, so it is a good idea to purchase wines you want to take home. Be Considerate: It is illegal for customers to bring outside alcohol onto winery premises. It is also illegal for wineries to serve customers who are intoxicated or not of legal drinking age. Drivers should be proactive in handling these behaviors and not drop off intoxicated individuals. Be Proactive: Inform parties (bachelor, bachelorette, etc.) and other clients in advance that they need to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner at wineries. Take Care: Many wineries are on busy roads that are traveled at relatively high speeds. It is VERY DANGEROUS and a SERIOUS LIABILITY RISK for tour clients to walk along these roads to/from a tasting room. Please: Do NOT provide alcohol in buses or limousines en route to wineries. AND Lastly: Please do not bring intoxicated or unruly clients to wineries. Drunkenness should not be facilitated by providing or allowing consumption of alcohol en route to wineries. Bringing intoxicated or unruly clients to wineries will result in incidents and/or conflicts that will only serve to harm both wineries’ and tour operators’ businesses.
