Tips:
1
Marabu offers a
fully developed range
of brushes. For
Decormatt Acryl, we
recommend using the
Marabu-Robust bristle
brush or MarabuUniversal synthetic hair
brush.
2
As the Decormatt
shades are very colourintensive, the brush
should be thoroughly
washed with plenty of
water and soap
immediately after use.
3
Decormatt Acryl is
available in the primary
colours cyan, magenta
and yellow, so using
the colour wheel you
can mix the secondary
colours (orange, violet
and green) yourself.
Simply mix two primary
colours together.
4
An antique appearance is achieved by painting with Marabu-Patina.
See page 35
5
You can also give
your work a satin matt,
or gloss finish by
covering the completed
work when dry with a
colourless Marabu
varnish.
6
Decormatt Acryl is
compatible with many
other Marabu-Colours,
for example: Decorlack,
Fun Liner Glitter and
Magic, Deco Painter,
and Brilliant Painter.
7
To ensure
maximum weatherproofing, always paint
on clean, dust and
grease-free substrates.
Techniques:
1. Rustic painting:
This new, more viscous
acrylic paint is
absolutely perfect for
traditional rustic
painting. As usual, the
paint works very well
“wet-on-wet”. Using two
colours on the brush at
once enhances the
three-dimensional
effect.
2. Decoupage
Turn images and
decorative papers into
valued objects.
For more information
see pages 16/17.
3. Stencilling:
Stencilling made easy!
Dab a stencilling brush
or small sponge
sparingly into some
Decormatt and produce
some beautiful patterns.

or Deco Painters
without any problems.

To ensure
maximum weatherproofing, always paint
on clean, dust and
grease-free substrates.

Tips:
This is how it’s
done:
For an even application,
work quickly and evenly
in one go using a soft
small sponge, or flat
paintbrush (synthetic or
natural hair). Ideally the
wood should be
covered in the direction
of the grain.
If a particularly deep
colour is required, the
first coat of glaze
should be over-painted
a second time.
For very pale shades,
Decorlasur can be
thinned with water. If
thinning is made with
more than 10% of
water, apply a
protective lacquer when
totally dry, e.g.
Marabu-aqua-varnish
or Marabu-Klarlack,
Mattlack, Seidenmattlack. A protective
coat should also be
applied to objects used
frequently and items

Marabu-BasicColor
Marabu-Textil
Velvet-matt, water based casein
emulsion paint with intense, pure
colour shades. For putting your
brilliant ideas into action.
BasicColor is the universal paint suitable
for painting and designing on paper,
card, papier-mâché and self-curing
modelling clays, as well as wood,
polystyrene, plaster, stone, glass and
more…The excellent painting properties
are due to casein, which is a natural
product. Therefore BasicColor is ideal
both for colourful poster painting as well
as for the finest decoration.
Thinned with a little water, using long
brush strokes, the paint flows well and
is, therefore, also particularly
recommended for painting behind glass.
The luminous colours give very good
coverage, have good lightfastness and
are wipe-proof after a short drying time.
Marabu-BasicColor is available in 26
brilliant shades. There’s nothing to stop
your imagination! (See pages 32)

Marabu-Decoupage
With decoupage there’s no limit to
ideas for all sorts of creative designs
Give pictures and patterned paper a
permanent use on decorative items and
turn simple things into creative objects.
Attractive designs can be applied to
most surfaces by cutting out art-print
paper motifs to decorate wooden chairs,
chests of drawers, lamp-shades, storage
boxes, glass vases, picture frames, etc.
The decoupage artist’s imagination and
ideas are endless.
Besides the attractive decoupage paper
range, the new Marabu-Decoupage
Varnishes, Marabu-Decoupage-Glue Pro
and Marabu-Decormatt Acryl or
Marabu-Decorlack Acryl are the ideal
partners to successfully achieve this
look. Welcome to the circle of
decoupage artists –you’ll be hooked!
The future is rosy for creative
home decoration! With an
infinite choice of patterns –
make it your own!
16
This is how it’s
done:
For wood, metal, glass,
porcelain, ceramic,
stone, plastic,
cardboard, canvas
1. Prime the clean and
grease-free object with
Marabu-Decormatt
Acryl or MarabuDecorlack Acryl and
allow to dry.
2. Briefly soak the cut
out decoupage motif in
water, dab it off and
paint Decoupage-Glue
Pro onto the reverse
side using a brush.
Glue it onto the object
and smooth it out.
3. Spread an
additional thin coat of
Decoupage-Glue Pro
over the motif and
allow to dry
thoroughly. Afterwards
seal with 2 – 4 coats of
Decoupage-Varnish.
Allow to dry well
between each coat.
Tips:
1
For a really
smooth wood surface,
prime first with thinned
Decoupage-Varnish and
sand evenly using a fine
grade sandpaper when
totally dry. Then prime
the dust-free surface
with Decormatt Acryl or
Decorlack Acryl. Even
very absorbent surfaces
and pre-fired ceramic
(unglazed
porcelain/ceramic) can
be smoothed if the
surface is thoroughly
cleaned and sealed
with a coat of thinned
Decoupage-Varnish
before decorating.
2
The more
absorbent the substrate
and the more coats of
varnish applied, the
longer the final drying
time of the finished
object.
3
Always completely
glue the cut out images
onto the object, so that
no edges lift up. Pay
particular attention
when sealing the edges
of the paper. Air
bubbles should be
smoothed out to the
edge using a brush. For
particularly large motifs,
use a rolling pin.
4
For dark
substrates, paint the
back of the image with
a light colour, cut it out
and then glue it onto the
object with DecoupageGlue Pro (soaking in
water is not necessary).
This prevents the dark
background colour from
showing through the thin
paper.
5
The range includes
a selection of decorative
glass and pre-fired
ceramic objects, special
decoupage-scissors and
a cutter to make cutting
out easy, plus our two
practical decoupage
brush sets.
6
Last but not least to
complete the package:
Marabu-Collage-Glue
with its powerful bond is
not just for all kinds of
papers but is also the
best partner for the
wallpaper technique
and fabric collages.
17
Marabu-Serviette technique
Marabu-Textil
This is how it’s
done:
Finest serviette technique
As with decoupage (see page
16/17) the serviette technique
allows you to turn everyday
objects into mini-masterpieces.
Here’s how it’s done – it’s fun
and easy to do!
1. Prime the object you
would like to decorate
with Marabu-Decormatt
or Decorlack in a
shade that matches the
serviette motif.
2. When you have cut
out the serviette motif,
carefully remove the
first, printed layer and
apply it to the object
you are decorating.
Always ensure the
primer is totally dry
first.
3. Now cover the
whole motif and the
background with
Marabu-Serviette
Varnish & Glue. Always
paint from the middle
of the motif to the
edge. Allow to dry –
finished!
Tips:
1
Always clean
brushes with water
immediately after use.
2
Depending on
quality of serviettes,
smudges may appear
around the motif when
overpainting with water
based varnish or other
media. In this case,
clean brushes with
water frequently. Try a
test area first.
3
18
Do not varnish
over the freshly applied
motif while it is still wet,
as it can easily tear.
4
As long as it is still
wet, you can move or
take off the motifs.
5
Pressed flowers and
leaves look lovely. Even
fine silk and bits of fabric
can be used in this
technique without any
problems. After initial
drying, exterior objects
should get an additional
coat of varnish..
Crackle Medium
Textile Medium
Clear, water-based
medium for crackle
effect.
Clear, water-based
medium for the serviette
technique, to be used
on linen, cotton and
mixed-fibre fabrics up
to a maximum of 20%
synthetic content (wash
out any proofing and
softening agents before
applying).
Crackle
Medium
2
This is how it’s
done:
1. Prime with MarabuDecormatt or
Decorlack; dry with a
hair dryer.
2. Apply the medium
evenly; dry with a hair
dryer.
3. Apply Decormatt or
Decorlack again
(except metallic,
bronze and pearl
shades) very quickly;
the crackle effect will
occur immediately.
Allow to dry for at least
1 hour.
4. Continue with the
basic technique as
described overleaf.
Tips:
1
The thicker the top
coat, the more
distinctive the crackles
will be; for finer
crackles the paint
should be applied in
thin coats.
The character of
the crackle effect can
be influenced by the
direction in which the
top coat is applied:
straight application in
one direction results in
vertical or horizontal
crackles; a cloud-like
effect is achieved by
circular applications.
3
If the crackles
appear too large, the
crackle medium and
the corresponding paint
colour can be reapplied. The crackles
should then be much
finer.
4
Crackle effect can
also be obtained
without a primer:
simply start with the
crackle medium…
5
Only apply the
top coat of paint once
– painting over this
while it is still wet will
destroy the crackle
effect.
This is how it’s
done:
1. Fully prime the fabric
with textile medium
(priming must be
approx. 1 cm larger
than the serviette motif).
2. Place the serviette
motif directly on the
damp fabric, press
gently.
3. Paint with textile
medium, approx. 1 cm
over the edge of the
motif.
4. Iron the dry fabric
(50 cm x 50 cm) for 3
minutes on cotton
setting using a thin
cloth over the surface.
Finished items can be
hand washed.
Tips:
1
The serviette motif
must be completely
stuck to the fabric; air
bubbles should be
smoothed out with a
brush.
Porcelain
Medium
Textile Medium
2
Particular attention
should be paid to the
edges of the motif.
3
Marabu-Textile
Medium does not leave
any visible traces on
the fabrics mentioned
above.
4
If using a support
do not use cardboard
as it may leave marks
on the fabric. Remove
the dry fabric from the
support very carefully.
5
Wash painted
textiles by hand using a
gentle detergent. Wash
inside out and iron on
reverse. Do not rub,
wring or spin-dry. After
repeated washing a
stone-wash effect may
develop.
6
The edges of the
motif can be re-stuck
with Marabu-Textile
Medium if they come
loose.
Clear, water-based
medium for the
serviette technique, to
be used on decorative
objects made of
porcelain, ceramics,
glass. (The surface to
be painted must be
clean and grease-free).
This is how it’s
done:
1. Cut out your serviette
motif and place it on
the chosen object and
paint with Porcelain
Medium; pay particular
attention to the edges.
Porcelain
Medium
2. Apply the serviette
motif to the primer
while still tacky, press
gently.
3. Paint the whole motif
with Porcelain Medium.
4. After drying, fix as
described above. To
clean the object, wipe
with a damp cloth.
Tips:
2. Put object into the
oven after drying (4
hours at least). Pre-heat
oven to 170°C. When
this temperature is
reached, bake for 30
minutes then turn off the
heat and allow the item
to cool down in the
closed oven. To clean
the object, wipe with a
damp cloth.
Coloured priming with
Marabu-Ceramica is
also possible.
This is done as follows:
1. Prime with
Ceramica; allow to dry
for 1 hour.
1
If washing is
necessary, gently handwash the item only. If
washed regularly, the
edges of the serviette
motif can start to lift up.
2
Ideal for
ornaments.
3
To mark out the
motifs on the surface
being painted, we
recommend using a
phantom pen.
4
White and very
light coloured serviette
motifs may yellow
during the fixing
process.

Create charming seasonal decorations.
Instructions for
marbling (dip
technique):
Preparation: Fill the
marbling container
(e.g. a big yoghurt pot)
with water. Always
make sure that the pot
is big enough for the
object to be submerged
completely in the water.
Please note – after use
the container cannot be
used again except for
marbling purposes.
Place the object on a
stick (e.g. a cocktail
stick).
Marbling:
1. Drip the paint
directly from the jar
onto the surface of the
water. 2 or 3 colours
are ideal. The more
colours used, the more
colourful the marbling
will be.
remove surplus paint
from the surface of the
water using a piece of
paper (keep hold of the
edge). Colour residues
on the surface of the
water prevent the new
paint from spreading
evenly.
2. Swirl the paint
immediately using a
cocktail stick to create
patterns.
Follow-up:
Before marbling again,
remove surplus paint
from the surface of the
water using a piece of
paper (keep hold of the
edge). Colour residues
on the surface of the
water prevent the new
paint from spreading
evenly.
3. Dip the object slowly
into the water and
remove it quickly. Allow
to dry – finished! And if
you want to do more,
before marbling again,
Marbling using
wallpaper paste
Tips:
1
Tilt the jar when
dripping the paint – do
not hold vertically!
2
When marbling,
always work quickly, as
the paint will develop a
film over the surface
after a few minutes and
can no longer be used.
3
Pre-clean glass
and metal with alcoholbased spirit.
4
Colour intensity is
dependent on the size
of the container used
and the quantity of
paint applied.
Create a personal style with unique designs.
Instructions for
marbling using
wallpaper paste
as the medium:
Preparation: Prepare
your wallpaper paste
medium: Stir 1 level
tablespoon of
wallpaper paste into 1
litre of cold water using
a whisk and leave it to
soak overnight.
Marbling:
1. Pour the wallpaper
paste into a shallow
tray. Always make sure
there are no air
bubbles in the paste, as
they will show up on
the decorated
paper/fabric/silk.
2. Drip the paint
directly from the jar
onto the surface of the
paste. 2 or 3 colours
are ideal. The more
colours used, the more
colourful the marbling
will be.
3. Swirl the paint
immediately using a
cocktail stick or comb to
create patterns.
4. Gently put the paper
or the fabric/silk onto
the paint. Wait until the
material has become
completely saturated.
5. Slowly take the
paper/fabric/silk from
the medium and wash
off the surplus paste
5
immediately using cold
water – do not rub off.
Allow to dry – finished!
Follow-up:
If you want to do more,
before marbling again,
remove surplus paint
from the surface of the
paste using a piece of
paper (keep hold of the
edge). Colour residues
on the surface prevent
the new paint from
spreading evenly.
Renew the paste bath
after about 7-10
marbling processes.
The original
colour is achieved on
white substrates only.
On materials such as
wood, papier-mâché
etc., the colours will
have a darker
appearance.
6
The order in
which the colours are
dripped has an
important influence on
the marble pattern.
Generally, the second
colour pushes away the
first one so that the
second colour will be
more prominent.
7
If you would like
to marble with only one
colour, simply use clear
and your chosen
colour.
8
Marabu-Cleaner
& Thinner or white spirit
can be used for
cleaning purposes.
9
We recommend
wearing a pair of
rubber gloves and an
apron while marbling.
Marabu-Brilliant
Painter
Marabu-fun

tex
This is how it’s
done:
Gloss lacquer pen for school, leisure
and hobby use. The shining example
amongst pens
Marabu-Brilliant Painter is ideal for
opaque painting on almost all materials,
such as glass, metal, plastic, cardboard,
paper, wood, terracotta, and many
other surfaces – whether they are
smooth, porous, transparent or dark. It
contains no toluene/xylene, is fast
drying, has a good opacity, is lightfast
and is weatherproof, when well applied.
1. Before use, shake
the painter well with
the cap closed. Press
the tip repeatedly until
the ink is visible (do not
continue once the ink
appears as this may
overload it).
2. Try the painter on a
piece of scrap paper
first (not on the object
to be painted until you
are sure the flow is
smooth).
3. After use, close the
cap firmly (until it
clicks). Store in a
horizontal position!
Tips:
Marabu-Brilliant Painters are obtainable
in three tip widths – 0.8mm for fine
detail, 1-2mm for writing and decorating
and 2-4mm for painting on larger areas.
They are available in 10 brilliant colours
(see colour range on pages 33)
1
Clean the object
before painting.
2
Slowly press the
tip. If the tip is pressed
too often, too much ink
may flow out of the
pen.
3
To improve the
weatherproof finish,
allow your work to dry
for at least 30 minutes,
then paint over with a
Marabu-aqua varnish;
Klarlack (gloss),
Mattlack (matt), or
Satin matt varnish.

Close the cap
with a “click” after use,
and store in a

The colour wheel clearly shows how a
secondary colour (mixed colour) is
obtained from the three basic
colours (primary colours) cyan,
magenta and yellow, by
mixing two of these
together. For example,
by mixing yellow with
magenta, you get redorange.
Almost all shades can be
mixed this way. The
exceptions are black and
white as well as special
shades such as
fluorescent, metallic,
pearl and glitter –
these cannot be
mixed.
Using some white,
shades can be
lightened and pastel
shades then created.
Adding a small
quantity of black will
give darker shades. By
mixing black and white
you get grey.
If all three primary colours
are mixed together you get
grey-brown.
