Striking special automotive finishes have never been
more popular, and their prevalence in new OEM colours
continues to rise. Repairing these three- or four-coat finishes
requires distinctively technical processes, and can test the
refinisher’s expertise, as well as the quality of the materials

specific refinish training for new, special colours. Particularly
challenging to work with, the new colours include “Rouge

“Magic Red” (Opel), Rouge Babylon (Peugeot) and “Hot
Magenta”, “Candy Red and “Blue Candy metallic” (Ford).
The current tinted clearcoats are examples of how car
manufacturers are using exclusive special colours to
maximise the visual appeal of their new models. Committed
to collaboration with customers, the Standox approach is
to practically support refinishers, meeting their requirements
through continuous development of refinishing solutions for
special colours such as these.
The use of several coats, special pigments and coloured
clearcoats make repairing these finishes a particularly
demanding task. Standox has developed special additives
for the mixing of the clearcoat, making the repair process
more straight-forward. The coloured clearcoats always
determine the end result with these special colours. The final
overall effect, brightness and brilliance of the colour is driven
entirely on the thickness of the coloured clearcoat. Getting
this application right is the difference between a quality finish
and an average - or even substandard - result.
Taking into consideration the complexities of the refinishing
process, Standox recommends that body shops have their
staff fully trained in the repair of special colours. Relevant
training courses are regularly offered by the brand: at the
Standox Training Centre, Standox trainers impart the required
knowledge, while refinishers are encouraged to practice
these elaborate repairs under professional guidance on site.
When repairing special colours, skilful colour matching is
a fundamental determinant of a successful job. The use of
sprayed sample panels with one, two and three translucent
effect coats adds to the reliability and speed of repair. By
using a highly intricate blending-in method, an outstanding
match with the original colour is achieved. Standox also offers
special training on the refinish process for tinted clearcoats.
