2) Reading Purple, Green and Yellow to children:
Look at the front cover:
Can you tell from the title what the story is about?
Why do you think the girl has so many markers?
What do you think she will do with all those markers?
What different colours can we see on the front cover?
Go through the colours and ask which children prefer that colour.
Read Purple, Green and Yellow.
Ask the children:
What do you think would really happen if you coloured on yourself?
What surfaces should you not colour on?
What is a good surface to colour on?
What kinds of materials can you use to colour with?
What different things do you like to draw?
3) Play Activity
Play I Spy with the children. Say, “I spy, with my little eye, something that is____
(insert colour).” Have the children look throughout the room for something of that
colour. Once they find something of that colour have them bring it back to the
reading circle and describe it. Once everyone has described their item have them
return the item where they found it. Then repeat the game with a different colour.
4) Song
Sing: The Colour I Want to See
Red is the color I want to see, If you’re wearing red, Stand up for me.
Show me your red, Turn around. Show me your red and then sit down!
Blue is the color I want to see, If you’re wearing blue, Stand up for me.
Show me your blue, Turn around. Show me your blue and then sit down!
Green is the color I want to see, If you’re wearing green, Stand up for me.
Show me your green, Turn around. Show me your green and then sit down!
Yellow is the color I want to see, If you’re wearing yellow, Stand up for me.
Show me your yellow, Turn around. Show me your yellow and then sit down!
Orange is the color I want to see, If you’re wearing orange, Stand up for me.
Show me your orange, Turn around. Show me your orange and then sit down!
Pink is the color I want to see, If you’re wearing pink, Stand up for me.
Show me your pink, Turn around. Show me your pink and then sit down!

5) Reading My Box of Color by Lorianne Siomandes to children:
Look at the front cover:
Can you tell from the title what the story is about?
What do you think is happening in the illustration?
What colours can you see in the picture?
Read My Box of Color.
During the story:
Have the children look for the worms on each page.
Ask the children the actual colours of the items shown throughout the book.
Have the children answer some of the questions throughout the story.
6) Craft : Handprints
Materials Needed:
Tempera paint (Red, Blue and Yellow)
Large pieces of paper
Styrofoam plates
Pour different coloured paint onto the Styrofoam plates (one colour per plate).
Have the children place each of their hands into different paint plates. Have them
press their hands onto the paper to make prints. Then have them rub their hands
together and see what new colour it makes; make more prints. Have them clean
their hands and try again with a different colour combination. Children can also
rub their hands with other children to see what two colours make which new
colour. The object of this craft is to learn about the concept of colour mixing in a
fun and interactive way!
Below is an example of how the craft could be completed.
Luke, age 5, experiments with
mixing different colours.
