During April, review for SOLs, Advanced Placement (AP) exams, and the
Workplace Readiness exam will be offered each week. Schedules that
include date, time, and topics to be covered will be posted on the school’s
website during the week of March 28. Please encourage your student to
attend the review sessions so he/she will be fully prepared for end of the
year testing.

Parents of Seniors: As you may know by now, the graduation ceremony has
been confirmed for Tuesday, June 7, at 6:00 p.m. at Jiffy Lube Live.
Students will need a cap and gown for the ceremony. If you have not yet
ordered one, you can contact a representative at Herff Jones at 866-2385335 or [email protected] Graduation practice will be held on
the morning of Monday, June 6, at 8:30 a.m. at Jiffy Lube Live. Any student
who wishes to participate in the graduation ceremony must attend practice.

For those parents who drive your children to school, we need your help! Each
morning over 1,000 cars enter the parking lot at Battlefield in a 30 minute
window (6:50 a.m. to 7:20 a.m.). With this number of cars and the number of
buses that enter and leave each morning, the traffic often backs up. Lately, a
number of parents have been allowing their children to get out of cars on
Graduation Drive or at the entrance to the parking lot. This is highly dangerous
as students are darting between moving cars during a time of day where the light
is limited.
Please help us to ensure the safety of all students, including those who are in
their first months/years of driving. If you are going to drive your child to
school, it is imperative you drop your student off at the front of the school. If
students are ready to exit the cars quickly, the traffic in front of the building will
move faster. If your child needs time to remove items like large projects, please
pull into the front parking lot to allow traffic to continue to move efficiently.
I would like to thank our Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) for their generous
donation of 8 document cameras. These have already been issued to members
of our staff and are being used by students in the classrooms. The PTO is also
helping the school to share information and resources related to mental health,
suicide prevention, bullying prevention, and substances abuse prevention. If

ART
An art reception was held Sunday, February 28, at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in honor of students
whose artwork were selected for this showcase exhibition. Works of art were submitted in December from
Prince William County schools. A group of retired art educators selected which pieces would be accepted into
this year’s county wide exhibition featuring art from elementary, middle and high schools across the county.
The exhibition will be on display through March 20 in the Hylton Performing Arts Gallery located on the
second floor of the center.
Battlefield High School had 3 works of art to be a part of this year’s exhibition; these pieces were by Hannah
Boutwell, An Thai, and Sydney Williams. Both Hannah and Sydney along with their families attended the
reception. Sydney was a guest speaker discussing the symbolism behind the watercolor still life painting created
in memory of her grandmother.

COUNSELING
Did you know?
The BHS Counseling Office processed and submitted 1878 senior midyear transcripts to colleges and
universities in February!
Course Selection for 2016-2017
In mid-February BHS school counselors began meeting individually with students to discuss academic
planning, graduation requirements, career interests, and post-secondary plans. These individual student
meetings will continue through early April. The counselors will meet with rising seniors through US/VA
History classes, rising juniors through English 10 classes, and rising sophomores through English 9 classes.
Students can find out from their teacher the date their class is scheduled to meet with the school counselors. If
students are absent on the day their class meets with the counselors, their counselor will follow up with them to
arrange a time to meet.
During these meetings, each student will be provided with an unofficial copy of his/her transcript and a yellow
copy of his/her course selection form to take home for parent/guardian review, approval, and signature.
Students are expected to return their course selection forms to the Counseling Office with parent/guardian
signature within one week of meeting with their counselor. Additionally, teachers will re-evaluate course
recommendations in early May. A letter will be mailed to each student and parent/guardian in mid-May so that
you may finalize course requests or make adjustments as needed. The deadline to submit course request
changes for the 2016-2017 school year is Monday, June 6, 2016.
Senior Survey
Each year we are required to gather survey data from every member of the senior class regarding postsecondary plans, college acceptance, and scholarship awards. The information that is gathered is then reported
to the school division and the state. All seniors must complete the senior survey on Family Connection in
April-May. More details and directions will be provided to seniors in early April.
Junior Year Planning Guide
The college application process begins during junior year. It is the last complete school year on high school
transcripts when students apply to colleges in the fall of their senior year. This may be the last opportunity for
students to fill in any gaps in their academic or activity records. An important year, there are a number of
suggestions that can help students and parents prepare for senior year, graduation, and the future.
 Junior year grades are critical; students need to learn how to study
 Continue to explore interests and plans for the future
 Consider volunteer work or a shadowing experience to learn more about career interests
 Gain a full understanding of the graduation requirements, including the required courses, SOLs, and
CTE certification exams
 Any student in need of additional credits should speak with his/her counselor regarding summer
school, Virtual High School, night school, and dual enrollment options
 Select appropriate classes for senior year; consider challenging courses (such as taking the extra year of
math, science or foreign language)

If your student is planning to attend college, the following may be helpful:
 Review PSAT scores, register and prepare for the SAT and/or ACT
 Attend college fairs and financial aid workshops
 Begin researching colleges and make a list of about 15-20 possibilities

 Have discussions with your student about colleges, your expectations, and financial situation
 Research scholarship opportunities

AP Exam Information
AP Exams will be administered Monday, May 2nd through Friday, May 13th. Dates and times are preset by The
College Board and must be adhered to. Below is important information of which parents/guardians should be
aware:

In early April, AP pre-administration will occur. Pre-administration is a way to save time on exam days.
During this time, students will complete identifying information on the answer sheets. It is strongly
encouraged that when students are entering information on the answer sheets that they use the same
information as in previous years and with other College Board assessments. For example, students
should use the same email address on any AP exam answer sheets that they used on their PSAT answer
sheet and/or their College Board account. This helps with continuity of score reporting.
 The 2015-2016 Bulletin for AP Students & Parents was distributed to students in January. It is important
that families review the bulletin closely for AP rules and expectations. The bulletin can be found online

 AP exams conducted in the morning: Students should report directly to their exam location by 7:30 a.m.
(including on Wednesdays before Read to Succeed). During the week before exams, students will be
informed by their AP teacher where to report for exams.
 Bring several #2 pencils and traditional blue or black ink pens. We will not have any available for
students to borrow.
 BE ON TIME! Students cannot be admitted after exams begin. If a student is absent because he/she is
ill, the student must submit a doctor’s note to Mrs. Pomfret in the Counseling Center within 24 hours of
the missed exam.
 No electronic equipment (cell phone, smartphone, laptop, etc.) portable or listening devices (MP3
player, iPod, etc.), cameras or other photographic equipment devices that can access the internet, or any
other electronic/communication devices are allowed in the exam room or during a break. Use of any of
this equipment can cause the student’s score or scores of the entire group to be cancelled and the
school can be prohibited from serving as an AP exam site in the future.
 No watches that beep are allowed.
 No eating or drinking is allowed.

If students are taking an exam that allows calculator use, fresh batteries are recommended. If students
are allowed a calculator, ruler and/or straightedge they should have those items with them when they
report to the exam. We will not have any available for students to borrow.
It is strongly encouraged that students bring their lunch when they have their AP exam(s), especially if
they have both morning and afternoon exams.
Students taking the following exams should arrange for rides home since these exams will end past the
regular school day:

Governor’s Early College Scholars Program
The Governor’s Early College Scholars Program is intended to encourage eligible high school students to
complete requirements for a high school diploma and concurrently earn at least 15 hours of transferable credits
toward a college degree. This program can potentially result in a more productive senior year and reduce the
amount of college tuition for families. Students earning a college degree in seven semesters instead of eight can
save an average of $5,000 in college expenses.
The Governor’s Early College Scholars Program agreement may be signed at any time, from ninth to twelfth
grade. Participants agree to: (1) earn an Advanced Studies diploma with a Governor’s Seal and (2) earn at least
15 transferable college credits while enrolled in high school. Interested students can download the Early
College Scholars Agreement at the “Documents & Downloads” menu of the Counseling Center webpage or
pick one up in the Counseling Center. Completed forms should be returned to the Counseling Center.

The Counseling Center staff provides academic, personal/social, and career counseling to all students and offer
support and assistance to parents/guardians and staff. Please check our website and future newsletters for

Boost Learning Power with School Breakfast
You have probably heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but do you know why? We
perform better, mentally and physically, when our bodies are fueled. Not having had any food since the night
before means your body is starving for energy, even if you do not feel particularly hungry. Breakfast is
especially important for kids whose bodies and brains are developing and growing.
Students who eat breakfast miss less school, get better grades and are more likely to graduate high school. Yet 3
out of 4 teachers say their “students regularly come to school hungry.” Hungry kids are more likely to have
health issues and trouble learning and concentrating. They are also more prone to behavioral and emotional
problems.
Looking for a convenient and affordable way to feed your student(s) breakfast on school days? All Prince
William County Public Schools serve breakfast every school day, even on two hour delays! Our “Grab n’ Go”
breakfasts are designed to be nutritious and portable so that kids can enjoy a balanced breakfast in the classroom
or cafeteria. Offerings vary each day and include items like hot breakfast sandwiches, breakfast breads, French
toast sticks, cereal, fruit, 100% fruit juice and milk. Fruit smoothies are offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays at
the middle and high schools. They are made with real fruit and yogurt, and blended right in your school’s
kitchen!
If your student is receiving free or reduced price school lunch, they automatically qualify for free or reduced
price school breakfast. A complete breakfast only costs $1.45, or $7.25 a week. So start your school day off
right by joining us for breakfast!

President’s Volunteer Service Award
Laura A. Keane has been honored for her exemplary volunteer service with a President’s
Volunteer Service Award.
The award, which recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant
amounts of their time to serve their communities and their country, was granted by the
Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program on behalf of President Barack Obama.
Battlefield High School nominated Laura for national honors this fall in recognition of
her volunteer service. Laura’s volunteer activities include serving as an EMT-B with
the Evergreen Fire Department, being a Leader in Training for the Prince William
Summer Youth Academy, serving as a Summer Quest Volunteer for the Gainesville Mini Library, participating
in Fauquier Hospital’s Medical Camp during the summers of 2012 and 2013, and spending time at the House of
Mercy.
The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National
Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), recognizes middle level and high school students across
America for outstanding volunteer service.

A special recognition goes to the students and their teachers, Mrs. Goodman and Ms. Klima-DuBois, of the
"Bobcat Café" for raising and donating $1,300.00 dollars towards the work of Children with Disabilities Fund
International. Their hard work, dedication, and generosity make us very proud.
"Bobcat Café" on their mission - selling baked goods and bringing joy to Battlefield students and staff each
Friday morning.

GOVERNMENT

This past semester, I was honored to serve as a United States Senate Page. The
U.S. Senate Page Program is an opportunity for juniors in high school to travel to
Washington, D.C., and witness the greatest deliberative body in the world at
work. Pages are appointed by a senator from their state, and have been a
traditional element of the Senate since 1829.
I first heard about this incredible program through a School Fusion email sent by
Battlefield. I was instructed to visit Senator Mark Warner's (D-VA) website,
where I quickly learned that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that I did
not want to pass up. After submitting a resume and recommendations in late June,
I was invited to an interview with the Senator's administrative director in midJuly. One week after my meeting, the phone call that I'd been hoping for came.
Following my enthusiastic acceptance, a whirlwind of filling out forms and
packing ensued. Before I knew it, move-in day had arrived. On September 9th, I joined 29 nervous, and excited, juniors
from all across the country in entering our home for the next five months.
Pages reside in Webster Hall, in rooms fit for 3-6 occupants. The residence has
two floors for boys’ and girls’ rooms. The lower level floor houses the United
States Senate Page School, where pages go to school for the duration of the term.
The residence is also equipped with a kitchen, as pages are responsible for
providing certain meals for themselves. A Page's day begins at 5:00 am, with
roughly an hour to get ready before school starts promptly at 6:15. The length of
the school day is dependent on what time the Senate convenes, since pages must
set up the chamber 1 hour before session. The normal school day ends at 9:45
a.m., but on one occasion I did experience a one hour day (4 15-minute classes). It
was at times like this that I was astounded by the quality of the education I was
receiving. Even with only 15 minutes, my teachers were able to fully explain key
concepts and give a lesson.
Besides being expected to focus on our studies, we were also expected to act
responsibly as employees of the Senate. The job of a page includes acting as a
messenger, delivering correspondence and legislative material around the Capitol
building and also to the other Senate office buildings. Other duties include setting
up lecterns before Senators' speeches, as well as completing roll call vote and
amendment runs. I found that one of my favorite aspects of the job was being able to stay on the Senate floor and listen to
the speeches and debates from Senators. This allowed me to really understand policy issues in greater depth than I had
known before. Votes were a fun time when almost all of the Senators would come onto the floor. As a page, I was right
there as they discussed weekend plans or ideas for a new bill. The socializing certainly crossed party lines, and I quickly
noticed the strict partisanship that the media often reports is not entirely present most of the time.

I was especially surprised at how every Senator maintained enthusiasm for their work even at 3:00 a.m. Pages work until
the Senate adjourns, and during particularly controversial votes, it is often expected that the Senate will work late. This
situation emerged on October 29th when the Senate was scrambling to meet the fiscal deadline set to expire on Halloween.
Staying up all night in the Capitol was the most tiring, yet memorable, moments of the program. Around 1:30 a.m., my
friend and I were distracted from our drooping eyelids by a funny joke Senator Booker (D-NJ) told us. Gestures like this
are common of many Senators. Many even hold events for the pages, like pizza parties.
Overall, working in the Capitol building was amazing. I was grateful
for the special tours that we were taken on, which gave us so much
more knowledge on the rich history of the building. We were always
on the lookout for prominent figures visiting the Capitol. During out
very first week, we met comedian Jon Stewart. Later, I witnessed
Malia Obama visiting, and stood by as a Bahranian delegation was
given a tour of the Senate chamber. The sense of never knowing who
or what you might see next was unbelievably exciting.
Aside from work, pages experience a wide range of social events. We
went on school field trips to the National Archives (where we
received special access to certain documents), Jamestown,
Williamsburg, and even the Army Navy football game (preceded by a stop at Gettysburg). Residential trips to D. C.'s
monuments, the Newseum, and a swing dancing lesson were extremely enjoyable. We also had full access to virtually
anywhere the metro could take us, so there was every opportunity to truly experience the amazing elements of the city.
My new friends and I ventured out nearly every weekend, trying new foods and visiting unique places that they did not
have back home. Of course, I was lucky to be so close to my own home, with the ability to see my parents often. This did
work against me on the Friday before our winter break, when the Senate was in session trying to pass the Omnibus bill.
Most pages had left early that day to catch their flights, and soon I was the only one left working on the Democratic side,
completing roll call vote and amendment runs by myself. I was grateful to receive help from my cloakroom supervisor,
and I felt a wave of accomplishment after that hectic day was over.
All in all, my time in D.C. affirmed my passion for government. I
was constantly impressed with the high level of compassion and
spirit I recognized in everyone around me, whether it was the
cloakroom staff, Capitol police officers, or—of course—senators.
My experience also left me with many lifelong friends, from
whom I learned a great deal about life around the U.S. Never had I
pictured myself slipping into the speech patterns of my friends
from the deep South, or getting ice skating lessons from a New
Hampshire natural. I learned the proper way to pronounce
“Nevada” (saying “Nev-AH-da” is forbidden), and that my friend
from Utah even said the word “both” differently. I feel so lucky to
have formed these unique friendships that will span across hundreds or thousands of miles. Many of us are already
working out plans to visit each other!
The two pinnacles of the page experience were at the beginning and end of our term, first with the visit of His Holiness
Pope Francis, then the State of the Union. On September 24th, we pages were honored to watch Pope Francis address the
joint session of Congress, and afterwards bless the crowds that had gathered from the Speaker’s Balcony. On the night of
the State of the Union, we were privileged to join Senators, along with Vice President Biden and Secretary of State Kerry,
as they proceeded to the House Chamber. We were able to watch the speech from the House Floor (where a limited
number of people were allowed). At the conclusion of the speech President Obama exited and walked past where we
stood, and I was able to shake his hand as he thanked us pages for our hard work. While I hope to do great things with my
life, I'm afraid nothing will exceed shaking the hand of the first African-American President of the United States at his
final State of the Union.

ATHLETICS
Boys’ Basketball
Our Varsity Boys’ Basketball team was crowned regular season and post-season champions of Conference 8,
and recently won the school's first ever Northern Region 6A title by defeating the top-seeded Westfield
Bulldogs. Our season ended with a state final four appearance and the most wins in school history (22). Several
players garnered post-season awards for the Bobcats, led by Senior Blake Pagon. Blake was named Conference
8 Co-Player of the Year, 1st Team AllRegion, and the MVP of the regional
tournament. He became only the third player
in program history to score over 1,000 points
with an early bucket in the regional title
game. Sophomore standout Brayden Gault
was named 1st Team All-Conference and 2nd
Team All-Region. Senior Collin Parker was
named 2nd Team All-Conference and was
selected for the All-Tournament Team in
regionals. Junior Shonari Street was named
2nd Team All-Conference and was also
selected for the the All-Tournament Team in
regionals. Seniors Keagan McGinnis and
Jarrett Glover were selected 2nd Team AllConference and Senior Vernon Kirby was
selected as an Honorable Mention for the All-Conference team. Seniors Nick Shablom and Mike Zika joined
Glover, Kirby, McGinnis, Pagon, and Parker in being honored on Senior Night before a win over Patriot HS. A
huge thank you to The Den and all of our loyal supporters as we look forward to supporting other sports
programs the way they supported us.
Girls’ Basketball
Our Varsity Girls Basketball team went 22-4, the best record in Battlefield history. We were crowned Regular
Season Champions for the first time, Conference Runner Up, and made it to the Second Round of the 6A North
Region. Seniors Taylor Baltimore, Nikki Dyson and Junior Marley McLaughlin were named 1st Team AllConference. Junior Ahlia Moone was named 2nd Team All-Conference. A huge thank you to The Den and all
of our loyal supporters.

Swim and Dive
Boys Varsity Swim - Finished the season with a 3-2 dual meet record and wins at the Freestyle Frenzy and
Seton Invitational. Despite being a very young team in a re-building year, swimmers Kyle Bodemer, Evan
Brandt, Nihar Bhat, Luke DeVore, John Fellenbaum Jr., Brandon Hoagland, Thomas Muldowney, and Jack
Peny all advanced to Regional competition. At the Regional meet, the team of Thomas Muldowney, Luke
DeVore, Evan Brandt, and Brandon Hoagland finished 16th in the 200 Medley Relay. Evan Brandt captured a
13th place finish in the 100 Butterfly with Thomas Muldowney finishing 15th place in the same event.
Year-end award winners were: MVP - Evan Brandt, Coaches Award - Kyle Bodemer, Most Improved Casey Cho, Outstanding Senior - John Fellenbaum Jr., and fabulous freshman - Luke Devore. With only 3
graduating seniors this year, expectations are very high for next season’s team.
Girls Varsity Swim - Finished 4-1 in dual meets, won the Seton Invitational and won the Battlefield
Invitational. Brought back the Conference Championship by beating Patriot H.S. for the conference meet title.
Sent our largest team ever to the State Championship. That team consisted of Lauren Candland, Morgan
Furlong, Emily Hetzer, Savannah Nash, Claire Peny, Stephanie Reheuser, Audrey Schwartz, Claire Schroeder,
Holly Tillotson, and Katie Tillotson. Scoring for the Bobcats at the State Championship were: Emily Hetzer –
6th place in 200 Freestyle, Katie Tillotson – 5th place in 50 Freestyle, Katie Tillotson – 3rd place in the 100
Freestyle, Emily Hetzer – 5th place in the 500 Freestyle, Savannah Nash – 10th in the 100 Backstroke, and
Lauren Candland – 16th in the 100 Breaststroke. The 400 Freestyle Relay team of Claire Schroeder, Savannah
Nash, Emily Hetzer, and Katie Tillotson finishing in 4th place. Savannah Nash broke the Battlefield record in
the 100 Butterfly with a time of 58.13, while teammate Emily Hetzer broke team records in the 200 Freestyle
(150.81) and 500 Freestyle (4:58.15). The 200 Freestyle Relay team of Holly Tillotson, Savannah Nash, Emily
Hetzer, and Katie Tillotson set a new school mark of 1:39.82. Emily Hetzer's time in the 200 Freestyle also
earned All-American consideration.
Year-end award winners were: MVP - Katie Tillotson, MVP - Emily Hetzer, Coaches Award - Savannah
Nash, Most Improved - Claire Peny, Outstanding Senior - Audrey Schwartz and Fabulous Freshman - Holly
Tillotson.
Varsity Dive - This year, Conference 8 entered its second season adding diving to the swim programs. While
conference divers did not compete in the 2015-16 season, 3 Battlefield divers made great strides towards getting
a full compliment of required dives for next season. Starting a new sport is always very difficult and has many
hurdles and we thank divers Ali Paoli, Meghana Singh, and Brandon Kite for their hard work and commitment
to this undertaking.

Track
The Battlefield Track and Field team successfully defended the indoor 6A Conference 8 Championship on both
the boys and girls sides, with several individual conference champions in a complete team effort. Specifically,
in the field events, Xyan Xrichardson won the boys high jump, Emily Harrison won the girls pole vault, Rayna
Smith won the girls long jump, Montana Coward won the girls triple jump, and Mark Skorija won the boys shot
put. In the running events, Lauren Hoffman won the girls 55 meter hurdles, Chad Jones won the boys 55 meter
hurdles, Lamia Beard won the girls 500m dash, Boatemaa Nyarko-Brentuo won the girls 300 meter dash, and
both the girls and boys 4x200, 4x400, and 4x800 meter relays were victorious. At the 6A Northern Region
Championship meet, the success of the team continued with the girls' team finishing in fourth, and the boys'
team finishing eighth, with several regional champions and all-region performances. Notably, on the girls side,
Boatemaa Nyarko-Brentuo finished fourth in the girls 300m dash, Shannon Lee finished second in the girls
500m dash, Kyla Carte finished sixth in the girls 1000m run, Lauren Hoffman finished second in the girls 55
meter hurdles in a new school record, Rayna Smith finished fourth in the girls high jump Emily Harrison was
regional champion in the girls pole vault, the girls 4x200 meter relay finished second, and the girls 4x800 meter
relay finished third.
On the boys side, the boys 4x400 meter relay finished fourth, Xyan Xrichardson won the boys high jump in a
new school record (breaking his own previous school record), Andre Sivels and Zulymon Drew both finished
sixth in the boys high jump, and Dakota Dalton finished fourth in the boys shot put. At the 6A State
Championship meet, in an extremely competitive field, several relays and athletes were able to earn all-state
honors and even become state champions. Xyan Xrichardson earned third place, and Andre Sivels earned sixth
place in the boys’ high jump, both earning all-state honors. Dakota Dalton finished sixth place in the boys’ shot
put, also earning all-state honors. Emily Harrison defended her outdoor state title, and won the girls pole
vault. Kyla Carte finished fifth in the girls 1000 meter run. The meet was capped off by a surprising, to others
but not to those involved, third place finish in the girls 4x400 meter relay. Thereafter, an impressive number of
athletes that had achieved the standards for participation in the New Balance Nationals Indoor at the Armory
in New York, New York, competed the weekend of March 11th through March 13th. While the team did not
have any All-American performances in the meet, there were many personal records attained in the meet, and
strong performances against the best in the country. Most significant were the girls 4x400 meter relay team of
Lauren Hoffman, Shannon Lee, Emily Wall, and Boatemaa Nyarko-Brentuo that dropped four seconds off their
best time of the season, finishing in 3:57.95 for fifth place in the emerging elite division. Also, the girls’ 4x800
meter relay team of Emily Wall, Shannon Lee, Georgia Matthews, and Kyla Carte dropped ten seconds off their
performance the week before, and finished in 9:29.95 for fourth place in the emerging elite division. Finally,
Lauren Hoffman was able to set a school record at Nationals in the girls’ 60 meter hurdles. We would like to
thank everyone for their time and support, and we look forward to an even stronger outdoor spring season
where the boys and girls look to defend their 6A Conference 8 Championship from last year, and compete for
the 6A Northern Region Championship.

Gymnastics
The Battlefield Bobcat Gymnastics Team repeated as Cedar Run Champions and also were undefeated in
regular season competitions. Alex Wisnieski is the Regional 6A North Vault Champion. Alex along with
Hannah Gallagher qualified to the State Competition in vault with Alex placing 5th. Emily Ignacio qualified to
state on bars, beam, floor and as an all around competitor.
Wrestling
The Battlefield Wrestling team had another strong finish in post season competition. We won our
5th consecutive Conference title with 7 individual champions (Brandon Wittenberg, Constantine Carayiannis,
River Curtis, Zac Feight, Chris Ferrill, Ray Bernot and Gabriel Dominguez).
The following weekend we won our 2nd consecutive Regional title and qualified 7 wrestlers for the 6A State
Championships (Brandon Wittenberg, Trevor Mello, River Curtis, Zac Feight, Chris Ferrill, Ray Bernot and
Gabriel Dominguez), where we placed 2nd overall with 6 place winners and 3 Champions! We finished the
season ranked #2 overall for all schools both public and private in the state of Virginia.

Criminal Justice students brainstormed the topic of ethics. Each class was asked to work in small groups to
identify ethical character qualities and to share them with peers in an eye-catching drawing. Mr. Chrisinger, the
teacher of this course, proudly provided an example of the many outstanding products his students delivered on

On Friday, February 19, thirteen of our twenty-seven students participating at All District Choir auditioned for
the All VA choir (All State) to be held at the end of April. Nine of the thirteen students were honored on
Saturday, February 20, 2016, after the concert as having been selected as a delegate or alternate. Battlefield had
six delegates (the most of any school in District 9) and three alternates (nine total was the most chosen in
District 9). Battlefield couldn't be more proud of the extra time and effort all of the students put in. The

On Tuesday February 17, Benj Thiriot and Tyler Dolph represented the choir
department at the PWCS School Board meeting. They spoke about the
importance of the fine and performing arts in our schools and the impact choir

National Non-Profit Organization that donates formal dresses to high school girls who may need one. The BHS
Chapter has been working really hard to collect prom and homecoming dresses. If you or someone you know is

PTO
Battlefield PTO Funds Purchase of Technology
Thanks to the PTO, 5 teachers have received brand-new document cameras! On March 3, 2016 these lucky
teachers completed training in how to use this amazingly versatile tool. Among a myriad of other uses, teachers
can use the cameras to record cinema-quality video of student
presentations, record exercises or tasks that are often repeated, take
virtual field trips, and scan or project homework, art projects, and
assessments. Recently, for example, students in Mrs. Lawless’s Pre-AP
Biology class experienced a virtual field trip to Sea World! Students
were able to speak to Shamu’s trainers via skype. As of today, the PTO
has purchased 8 document cameras for Battlefield. These purchases
represent the first step in the PTO’s technology initiative. The PTO’s
goal this year is to fund the purchase of 12 document cameras by May
10, 2016. If you are interested in contributing money towards the

Battlefield’s ILITE Robotics Team hosts FRC Stronghold Competition
Bringing their own version of March Madness to Haymarket, Virginia, thirty-nine teams from Maryland,
Washington D.C. and Virginia converged to compete in the 2016 medieval themed FIRST Robotics
Competition, FIRST STRONGHOLD.
On March 5 and 6, Battlefield High School hosted the Northern Virginia District FIRST Robotics Competition
sponsored by Bechtel. This is one of seven district qualifying events leading to the Chesapeake District
Championship at the University of Maryland's Xfinity Center in April.
After working for months to prepare, Battlefield High School’s ILITE Robotics executed with style to deliver
an action packed tournament, made even more exciting by the unexpected
appearance of FIRST founder Dean Kamen. After visiting with students and
signing autographs on anything and everything from a camera to a robot bumper,
Mr. Kamen, inventor of the Segway PT, Autosyringe, iBOT wheelchair, and
Slingshot Water Purification System welcomed teams to the competition and
remarked how great it was to see the intense robot competition, FIRST
STRONGHOLD played at a high school named Battlefield.
FIRST STRONGHOLD, is the medieval themed robotics game played by FIRST
Robotics Competition teams for 2016. In rounds of approximately two minutes of
fast-paced action, two alliances of three robots each collaborate to breach their
opponents' strategically selected fortifications, weaken their opponents' castle tower
with boulders, and in the last seconds surround, scale and capture the opposing
tower. FIRST Robotics teams around the world have six weeks to design, program,
build and test their robot for competition. Assisted by coaches and adult mentors,
many from engineering and technology corporations, each team uses sound
engineering practices to build a unique robot without instructions. FRC robots can
weigh up to 120 pounds. Power tools, costumes, spontaneous line dancing and
decorative team standards used to rally knights to battle in days of old all contribute
to a festive competitive atmosphere for this year’s tournaments.

fantastic floater to cheer on all the teams from

that came to compete. Adding to the
excitement and enjoyment of the day for the
host team, Mr. Kamen joined Coach Gail
Drake, Principal Amy Ethridge-Conti, adult
mentors and ILIITE 1885 students in the team
photo taken during a competition break. As the host, Battlefield High School Team ILITE 1885 did not
compete. Team 1885 is looking forward to upcoming competitions in Bethesda and Portsmouth to showcase
their robot.
The winning three robot alliance of the day was led by FRC Team 2363, Triple Helix from Menchville High
School in Newport News, Virginia partnered by FRC Team 2421 RTR Team Robotics, a club team of home
schooled students, from Burke, Virginia and FRC Team 1418, Vae Victis from George Mason High School,
Falls Church, Virginia.
About ILITE FRC Team 1885: Established in 2005 with thirty-two
students, ILITE FRC team 1885 is today one of the largest robotics
programs in the mid-Atlantic region. ILITE FRC Team 1885 based at
Battlefield High School in Prince William County, Virginia is coached
by Professor Gail Drake. ILITE stands for Inspiring Leaders in
Technology and Engineering. Since winning Rookie All Star in 2006
at the FIRST Championship, ILITE FRC Team 1885 has won
numerous awards including four regional Chairman’s Awards and five
regional Engineering Inspiration Awards. ILITE Team 1885 engages
in extensive outreach to share their love of science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM) by holding STEM summer
camps, hosting an annual STEM Expo, advocating for STEM
education with national politicians and supporting robotics education at
local elementary schools as well as schools in Haiti and Malaysia. To
