Connor Julie Dreesen Cook Andrew Crouch Tim Elder Becky Frye Lisa Gates Jo Garcia Denise Ghere As we concluded 2013, a bright spotlight shone on our community, highlighting the spirit of giving that began November 17th and continued throughout the holiday season. We are so fortunate to live in a community where people truly care and demonstrate that care and concern for one another. The spirit I have witnessed in the Greater Peoria Region is unlike any I have witnessed in the many communities in which I have lived throughout my lifetime. Out of tragedy arose an amazing movement of philanthropy that will continue for months and years to come. The devastating tornado that struck our community caused almost incomprehensible destruction, but through all the suffering, there were those consistently ready and willing to meet whatever need may arise. That giving assisted so many individuals, families and children. Throughout the years Children’s Home has benefited from our community’s giving, and we were determined to give back to so many of those who have given to us. As I take a moment to reflect, I am so proud of our agency and staff who have risen to that call in so many ways. Our AmeriCorps program took the lead in coordinating volunteers as well as the resource centers that are distributing food and clothing to the community, efforts that will continue for months to come. Our behavioral health therapists throughout the agency provided crisis counseling to children and families dealing with the psychological scars of the storm and remain prepared to continue that outreach. The agency is providing consultation to develop a sustained, long-term, awareness campaign regarding the effects of trauma to various groups. Many of our staff has individually given their time and talents to aid others in need. Even with these measures, though, the scope of the task at hand remains hard to grasp, but we are determined to continue “building strong communities” even as we pick up the pieces in communities like East Peoria, Pekin and Washington. Within the agency, this year has been another extraordinarily heartwarming holiday blessing to so many of our children and families. The giving began before the calendar even hit December as many companies, civic groups, families and children began giving for those less fortunate. Our holiday “wish list adoption” program, in which someone purchases around $50 of gifts for a specific child, demonstrates the care and concern our community has for its children. In addition, the outpouring of support in response to our Light in Every Window direct mail campaign should be sufficient to continue to supplement our needs to support our programs and agency. The many examples of philanthropy we see this time of year amaze even the most seasoned fundraiser, and I want everyone to know how much the children, board and staff appreciate your dedication to our mission. KEEPSACKS On Saturday, October 19, 2013, dozens of volunteers gathered at East Peoria High School to convert sheets of fabric and piles of toiletries into blankets and hygiene kits to meet the needs of local not-for-profit agencies. Between blankets donated in the drive leading up to the event and those created at the event, 734 blankets were distributed to area agencies as their clients prepared for the winter months. Additionally, 381 hygiene kits were assembled for distribution. These typically include soap, tissues, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner and similar items in a quart-sized plastic bag. DONOR RECOGNITION From the Development Office Dear Friends of Children’s Home, Our journey continues here at Children’s Home celebrating the arrival of a new year, where the hopes and dreams of many continue to inspire our donors for a better world for children and families in need. We have been serving the mission of Children’s Home for 148 years with dedication to helping children whose families are unable to provide the basic human needs of shelter and clothing. We protect, educate and heal children and families to bring a semblance of unity to a broken home. We guide, nurture and build self-awareness for a better understanding of family systems. Each day is a call to serve; each day unfolds with small miracles. Those miracles are the foundation of our souls; they provide the strength to lift another child or family out of chaos, turmoil and desperation. Our array of services is wide and deep, we serve more than 1,100 children a month throughout the tri-county region. Not all our services focus on children without homes, or children in a traumatic living arrangement, but children and families that need an extra guiding hand to maintain a stable home. We also provide a very specialized education to 145 students at Kiefer School and the Academy for Autism. We are multifaceted to meet the growing needs of our families that live in our community. The office of Development continues to help support all these programs through various fund raising efforts. Each day our donors respond to our needs with generous contributions, donations of goods, and a long history of volunteerism. Attendees had an opportunity to relax on hay bale couches, bid on live and silent auction items, enjoy a steak dinner and — most importantly — support the Residential youth in our care. This event raised more than $130,000 for Youth Farm thanks to friends like you. NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY AWARDS The Central Illinois Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) had its National Philanthropy Awards this past November, and Children’s Home CEO Clete Winkelmann was honored as the Ian T. Sturrock Outstanding Fundraising Executive for 2013. Congratulations, Liz! LOVE OF THE LAND 2013 The 2013 Love of the Land Scholarship Award winner was Mr. Crisp’s elementary school class at Kiefer School. Set up by a donor in memory of her brother, the recipient should share his love of the outdoors, gardening, tractors and the like. The class made regular trips to Scott’s Prairie to help with the prairie and crops while learning more about agriculture. The “Rose for a Special Mom” award was created by a donor to recognize a special mom in honor of her own mother. The candidate must be “a Mother who loves and is loved; have a strong and abiding belief in her faith; and live a simple life but make a difference in the lives of family members, always putting them before herself.” Denise exemplifies these ideals by taking foster children into her home and giving them a safe and stable place to grow and learn.
