SUMMER 2012
A
t Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh, generosity and foresight are hallmarks of not only our founder,
but also the countless donors and volunteer leaders who have taken up the Carnegie Museums banner
over its 117-year history. There would be no past, present, or future of this institution without them.
Last year, donor support helped our museums reach out to new audiences, launch far-reaching educational
initiatives, and create innovative exhibitions and programs.
Carnegie Science Center, joined by a number of regional partners, launched the Chevron Center for STEM
Education and Career Development, generating great excitement in both the corporate and educational
communities. Carnegie Museum of Natural History introduced the Center for World Cultures, which focuses
on exhibitions and programs that enhance our understanding of cultural diversity around the world. Our
museums also introduced a number of exceptional exhibitions: the provocative Paul Thek exhibition at
Carnegie Museum of Art, a collaboration with the Whitney Museum of American Art, followed by the
museum’s moving tribute to the work of Pittsburgh native and world-class photographer Teenie Harris;
The Warhol’s ode to the comic book genius of Alex Ross, which was the artist’s first museum show; and the
Museum of Natural History’s M is for Museum, which has been delighting scores of young visitors and their
families. Let us not forget that because of our ACCESS-card outreach program, more than 46,000 people
who otherwise might not be able see these exhibitions visited our four museums in 2011 for only $1 admission.
Andrew Carnegie wisely professed, “No man can become rich without himself enriching others.” Our sincere
hope is that the individuals and organizations who proudly support Carnegie Museums fully realize just how
much their gifts are enriching others.
One such individual is Ritchie Scaife, who for the second consecutive year used her support to challenge
others to increase their giving. In 2011, through the Margaret Ritchie Scaife Challenge Grant of $150,000,
we raised an additional $200,000 for our Annual Fund by matching increases in giving from existing donors
and gifts made by new contributors. Ritchie has also been a longtime supporter of the Museum of Art, and
she is understandably proud to have been able to fund the installation of the parlor suite of furniture from
PicNic, a Greek Revival mansion in Stanton Heights built by William Croghan and last owned by his
daughter, Mary Schenley. The suite is now a centerpiece of the Ailsa Mellon Bruce Galleries. Ritchie is
undoubtedly a woman of impeccable taste!
We also owe a special debt of gratitude to our tireless volunteers who were so instrumental in our fundraising
efforts for 2011, led by Toto Fisher, who chaired the Major Gifts Committee, and Vaughan Blaxter, chair of the
Individual Gifts Committee. With the support of our volunteer committees, we received more than $19 million
in total contributions in 2011, including $6.4 million for our Annual Fund.
In this special supplement, we are proud to pay tribute to those who continue to extend their support and
friendship to Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. Our sincere thanks!

John Rohe and Carol Zagrocki of
Colcom Foundation with Sam Taylor,
Director of Carnegie Museum of
Natural History
“CORDELIA MAY was well ahead of her
time,” says John Rohe, vice president of
philanthropy for the Colcom Foundation,
of Colcom’s late founder. “She had an
extraordinary ability to seamlessly inhabit
a future domain and understand how
current actions would affect the future.
She combined that with a willingness to
get off the bleachers and onto the playing
field to make a difference for the future.”
“ Maintaining records
of bird life and documenting
patterns of change make
Powdermill uniquely capable
of highlighting the extent
of the human footprint.”
— John Rohe
As early as 1952, “Cordy,” as she was known by friends, set her philanthropic sights on the
topic of overpopulation and its effects on the natural world. With a home in Ligonier, Pa.,
she and the foundation she created would find many kindred spirits in the researchers at
Carnegie Museum of Natural History and Powdermill Nature Reserve, the museum’s environmental research center in the Ligonier countryside.
“To understand the resilience and the fragility of the web of life in which our lives are
embedded, it’s essential to know the biological history of the planet,” John explains.
“Carnegie Museum of Natural History scientists examine the past and present, and provide
a glimpse into the future.”
Colcom’s generous decades-long support of the museum began with the avian research
program at Powdermill, a relationship that still continues. “Birds have a particular claim on
our collective conscience,” John says. “Maintaining records of bird life and documenting
patterns of change make Powdermill uniquely capable of highlighting the extent of the
human footprint.”
The foundation has gone on to support other areas of environmentally focused research at
the museum, including the creation of the permanent exhibition, Population Impact, which
invites visitors to leave comments. “The diversity of the comments gives us a good sense
of where we are,” says John. “How good are we at assessing our impact? What are the
impediments to us becoming good ancestors? Whether we agree or disagree, it’s all part
of a process.”

Co-Directors of Carnegie Science Center
BRUCE NIEMEYER, Chevron’s vice president, Appalachian/Michigan Strategic Business Unit,
was new in town last Fourth of July. He was looking for a vantage point to watch the fireworks, and decided to check out Carnegie Science Center’s North Shore location. He
discovered more than a great place to spend the holiday.
As someone interested in getting kids to seriously
consider careers in engineering, Bruce recognized
the Science Center could be a valued community
partner for Chevron. The company has a long
history of supporting STEM (science, technology,
engineering, and math) education where it does
business. “When we began talking internally
about investing in the community, the Science
Center was an obvious choice for the quality of its
programs and its commitment to making science
accessible to residents of all ages,” Bruce says.
“ By supporting the
Science Center, we hope
to build capacity for
the experience-based,
hands-on learning that
encourages students to
choose STEM-based
careers.”
In November 2011, the Science Center opened the
Chevron Center for STEM Education and Career
— Bruce Niemeyer
Development. “By supporting the Science Center,
we hope to build capacity for the experience-based, hands-on learning that encourages
students to choose STEM-based careers and enable the region to remain competitive in a
global economy,” he adds.
For Chevron, funding is part of a larger picture of support. The company’s employees are
stepping up and out to share their excitement about their fields at the Science Center’s biannual SciTech Days and the Pittsburgh Regional Science & Engineering Fair. Bruce believes
that firsthand connections with people who can communicate the exciting and real-life
application of a concept truly make the difference. It was a professor in a freshman geology
course that changed his future. “I began to understand that an engineer takes a concept
and makes something available for the common good. It required that spark from someone
who could see over the horizon in a way that I couldn’t,“ he says. “When students say,
‘Maybe I’d like to do that,’ everyone wins.”

Evan, William, Holly, Nia, and Evan, Jr.
FOR EVAN AND HOLLY FRAZIER, it’s the collective
impact of Carnegie Museums that make it not
only an invaluable community resource, but one
that enriches their family.
“Each of the four museums offers something
“ Our experiences at the
museums, as a family
and individually, make
our lives richer.”
unique,” says Evan, who is senior vice president
— Holly Frazier
of community affairs for Highmark, Inc., a Warhol
board member, and a former Carnegie Museums trustee and Carnegie Science Center board
member. “But collectively, they’re true leaders in art and science and give everyone in the
community something they can connect to.”
For Evan, Jr., 13, it’s a school field trip to the Science Center’s SciTech Days that leaves a lasting
impression. Under the guidance of working scientists and industry leaders, he learned about
real-world applications of science and technology. “It was pretty cool,” says Evan, Jr. “We
learned about the different jobs people do at local businesses.”
Sister Nia, who along with Holly has become a household name through their roles on the
popular Pittsburgh-based reality TV show, Dance Moms, loves the arts. When asked about a
favorite museum experience, she made surprisingly sophisticated picks for a 10-year-old: “the
cave” and “ribbon wall” from the last Carnegie International at the Museum of Art, referencing installations by Thomas Hirschhorn and Rivane Neuenschwander. William, 9, is a
budding scientist who loves chemistry and robots, making the Science Center’s roboworld
TM
his clear favorite. “I like the math part of it,” he says.
“Our experiences at the museums, as a family and individually, make our lives richer,” adds
Holly. Even Evan, after nearly a decade of volunteer leadership, is still finding new and exhilarating experiences, having recently attended Art Basel Miami with fellow Warhol board
members. “Warhol was the talk of Miami,” says Evan. “He really had an impact across the art
world and in contemporary life and today so does his museum.”

Gary and Carol Schurman
WHILE GARY AND CAROL SCHURMAN visited the Oakland museums regularly when their
now-adult sons were children, and Carol brought in scores of students as a former teacher
in Hampton Township, it was the new home for Carnegie’s dinosaurs that truly reignited
the Sewickley couple’s passion for their hometown museums.
In the summer of 2003, as part of DinoMite
Days— a summer-long fundraiser that transformed Pittsburgh into a Jurassic art park— the
couple sponsored Neurosaurus through Gary’s
business, Surgical Neuromonitoring Associates.
“It was a ton of fun for us, and the city,” says
Gary. “From there we got a taste of what goes
on behind the scenes at the museum and what
an incredible asset we have in the city. Like so
many Pittsburghers, we really didn’t appreciate
where this institution stands in the national and
international community of museums.”
“ To be able to participate
in a truly world-class
exhibit that gives context
and where the dinosaurs
are positioned accurately
is important.”
— Gary Schurman
That newfound appreciation led the longtime members to increase their Annual Fund
support to the Patrons Circle giving level. Then in 2008, they sponsored the fallen
Edmontosaurus, the duck-billed, plant-eating dinosaur outstretched on the ground at the
center of the fierce face-off between the pair of sparring T. rex in Dinosaurs in Their Time.
Just as impressive as the exhibition’s dinosaurs, notes Gary, is its depiction of the plants and
other animals that lived alongside them.
“We know that for children, the dinosaurs seem to be the first real experience that they
have with the museums,” he says. “To be able to participate in a truly world-class exhibit
that gives context and where the dinosaurs are positioned accurately is important.”
Carol, who minored in Fine Arts at Pitt—an alma matter she and her high school sweetheart
husband share—also is a fan of the Museum of Art. She’s participated in Art in Bloom as
part of a garden club since its inception four years ago. “The art collections are outstanding,” she says.

At the Science Center, marquee education programs consistently benefit
from that support, including live

camps and classes. At the Museum of
Natural History, their funding supports
lab equipment and educational

Career scientists with doctorates in
analytical and organic chemistry, Rich
and Dick credit their childhood experiences at Buhl and a special science
teacher for inspiring their lifelong
interest in science. “We don’t expect
everyone to become a scientist,” Dick
says. “We just want people to understand what science is all about and to

Ken, Marina, and Chase
EIGHT-YEAR-OLD CHASE LEHN has his clear-cut favorites at the Oakland museums: “The dinosaurs [the
Allosaurus gets top honors], the reptiles [lizards to be exact], and the live animals in the Discovery Room
[with a special nod to the silk worms].”
As members since 1998, Ken and Marina Lehn and their children have made lots of memories at Carnegie
Museums. Skyler, now 23 and studying energy policy at Indiana University, found inspiration for her high
school photography classes within the Museum of Art’s collections; Devon, a sophomore
“ We’ve really been
pursuing biological anthropology at George Washington University, is engaged with the
impressed with the research of the Museum of Natural History’s world-renowned archaeologist Sandra Olsen
who studied the mummy of a young boy from Abydos, Egypt, for a new museum display;
staff who organize and for Marina and Ken, the museums are destinations for one-of-a-kind events.

— Marina Lehn
Last spring, Chase marked his birthday with a dinosaur-themed celebration at the Museum
of Natural History. The couple celebrated Valentine’s Day “with an incredible meal” at the
Museum of Art, and accompanied Chase on a members-only behind-the-scenes look at the
museum’s expansive bug collection. “We’ve really been impressed with the staff who organize the events, and for the quality of the educational components that really set them
apart,” says Marina.
Marina served on the planning committee for the Bugs & Butterflies Ball, the opening celebration for M is for Museum, and the couple donated the services of popular TV actor Dino
Dan for the occasion.
Ken, the former chief economist of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and current Samuel A.
McCullough Professor of Finance at Pitt’s Katz Graduate School of Business, says it’s an extra-added bonus
that the family lives within walking distance of the Oakland museums. “With our membership, we don’t
always have to make a day of it. We can come for 45 minutes, and often we do.”

Randy and Brandon Cellone
THE OWNERS OF PITTSBURGH’S OLDEST FAMILY BAKERY know a little something about investing
in community.
“ I’ve always felt
it’s important to
hold on to what
made Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh.”
Cellone’s Bakery, a Corporate Member of Carnegie Museums for 17 consecutive years, is in its
fourth generation of ownership and is currently in the process of doubling the space where it
produces its well-loved Italian breads and rolls at a new location in Pittsburgh’s Windgap
neighborhood.
Founded in 1911 by company president Randy Cellone’s grandfather and great uncle in the
family’s one-time Bridgeville home, today the bakery employs 120 people, including Randy’s
son, Brandon, the bakery’s treasurer, and nine other members of the Cellone family.
— Randy Cellone
Randy’s personal commitment to Pittsburgh—and Carnegie Museums—blossomed in 1971,
when he returned to his hometown after serving three years in Vietnam as a first lieutenant
in the U.S. Army and rejoined his brother Jay Cellone to expand the bakery.
“Coming back to Pittsburgh after the war gave me a different sense of what home is about,”
recalls Randy. “I looked around— the steel mills were very active, the Pirates were doing
fantastic—there was a lot of pride in Pittsburgh.
“I’ve always felt it’s important to hold on to what made Pittsburgh Pittsburgh,” he continues.
“Carnegie Museums plays a big role.”
Randy and his wife, Patricia, are also longtime members and donors. When their three adult
children were growing up, the family regularly visited the Oakland museums, where Patricia’s
father was a part-time guard. In 2010, Brandon and his wife, Josie, were married at Carnegie
Museum of Art.
“My sisters and I were fortunate that our parents gave us all of the cultural experiences
Pittsburgh has to offer,” says Brandon. “Now being around 30, about the age when many
of my peers are settling their roots back in Pittsburgh, I hope that they’ll not only take
advantage of places like the museums but also support them.”
