XJ-6 & XJ-12 Sedans and XJ-S
The XJ sedans started in 1968 and continue up to today.
There are five basic series of the XJ-6 and three versions of the XJ-S.
Jaguar XJ-6, XJ-12, XJ-S
The XJ-6 and XJ-12:
Series I: 1968 to early 1974: All these models were built
on the short–wheelbase chassis, or at least all those
imported to the U.S. They featured chrome bumpers
and a large front grille. A V-12 variant was available in
1973 as the XJ-12. While later cars were improved in
many ways over the Series I, they lacked the original's
tidy dimensions and simple trim.
Series II: 1974–1978: All four-door models were built on
the long wheelbase chassis and featured higher rubber
bumpers and a smaller radiator grille—changes necessitated by new U.S. crashworthiness laws. A 12-cylinder
version was also available. Later Series II cars, both 6and 12-cylinder versions, were fuel injected. Jaguar also
built a limited number of Series II two-door coupes on
the short wheelbase chassis.
Series III: 1979 to 1987: Jaguar made big improvements in quality and reliability with the Series III. All are
fuel injected and feature much improved trim and
components. There are still many Series IIIs on the road
and many owners bestow great care upon them. A
future classic.
"XJ-40" XJ-6 & XJ-12: 1988–1994: This was a completely new model and did not share any components
with earlier XJs. It also featured an all–new twin-cam AJ6 engine that displaced 3.6 liters until 1990, when it was
enlarged to 4 liters. Early cars were troublesome and
many parts are not available. We recommend the 4-liter
cars, which are now incredible bargains.

"X300" XJ-6, XJ-R, XJ-12: 1995-1997: While in many
ways a development of the XJ-40, the X300 represented
a huge leap in quality and reliability; Jaguar was finally
close to world-class products and styling was back to the
feline stance that is instantly says "Jaguar." In addition
to the normally aspirated six-cylinder versions, a supercharged six-cylinder was available as the XJR, and a 6.0Liter V-12 appeared in a Jaguar for the last time.
The XJ-S :
XJ-S: 1976–1981: This grand tourer two-seat V-12 was
not really an E-Type replacement. The early "Pre-H.E."
cars are now quite scarce, but very inexpensive. Luckily,
many of the improved components from the HE series
will bolt on.
XJ-S HE: 1981–on: This version perhaps saved the XJ-S.
Great improvements were made in quality and reliability. New "High Efficiency" cylinder heads improved
mileage and performance while meeting stricter emissions standards. Interior and exterior upgrades were
minor but effective. These cars offer lots of performance
and style for relatively little money, but pay for an
expert inspection before signing that check.
XJS: 1992-on: Jaguar restyled the XJ-S with new rear
quarter panels and windows, tail lamps and Euro-style
single-lens head lamps. This was a substantial re-do that
improved quality while reducing assembly costs (but not
the sticker price!). The 4.0 six-cylinder engine was
offered as well as a 6.0-liter V-12 in later cars.

We offer two versions of replacement tops for the Hess &
Eisenhardt convertibles. (These were coupes coverted in the USA
as 1988 models.) This first is a replacement top that does not
include the glass window or a headliner. The second replaces the
glass rear window with a plastic one. Both tops are available in
Haartz Eurotopping Pinpoint Grain Vinyl (a replacement for the
discontinued GM vinyl) or Sun-Fast G canvas for a rich appearance.
