Dear friends
of the Greek National Opera
W
e sense the need to share with
you the emotional state and
enthusiasm of a traveller who
is ante portas of his final destination. Our
Greek National Opera, that since 1940 has
been presenting works of the international
and Greek operatic repertoire, is about
to be relocated from the Olympia Theatre
to its new home, at the Stavros Niarchos
Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC).
Throughout its history, the GNO has
hitherto offered us outstanding moments of
magic and delight. Still, culture is in motion;
not a static situation. It is a journey, not a
harbour. It is our conviction that culture
should embrace the entire society and
therefore we have no choice but to continue
this journey with all of you as fellowtravellers. This is our vision for the new era
dawning before our eyes.
In June, at the Odeon of Herodes Atticus,
I shall have the honour of conducting, along
with Elias Voudouris, Aida, this most popular
and emotional opera by Verdi. Directed by
Enrico Castiglione, the production originates
from the Taormina Opera Festival. In July, the
audience will enjoy the celebrated Carmen by
Bizet, to be conducted by Lukas Karytinos
and directed by Stephen Langridge. One of
the highlights of this summer is going to be
our tribute to the famous Greek composer
of the avant-garde Jani Christou that will
take place on 25 June on the Alternative
Stage of the GNO at the Stavros Niarchos
Foundation Cultural Center, in a series
of events entitled "Metamorphosis: The
SNFCC to the World" that will take place in
the premises of the SNFCC.
Greek National Opera will celebrate on
21 June the World Music Day with a free
concert in the loft of the National Museum
of Contemporary Art at Fix.
At the Visitors’ Center of the SNFCC
the pocket concerts and educational
programmes will be continued with free
entrance for all.
Those who did not manage to enjoy the soldout show LINKS by Antonis Foniadakis, our
new GNO Ballet Director, have the chance
to do so by travelling to Kalamata where the
performance will be given in the framework
of the International Dance Festival, on 15 and
16 July. Finally, in early July, our customary
annual presentation of the GNO Dance
School will take place.
It is our wish, dear friends, that our summer
productions as well as those of the new
season to be shortly announced, will mark
the onset of a new era for the cultural
history of our country, its ulterior aim being
to move you and bring about the kind of
magic that only the arts and creativity may
procure in this challenging period we live in.
I wish you a delightful summer,
Myron Michailidis

Verdi’s Aida is usually related to the great wealth of Pharaonic Egypt and is mostly
known for its impressive "triumphant march" of the Egyptians. However, the theme
of the opera reveals, as it so often happens, human beings struggling with their
intense emotions.
Conducted by the GNO's Artistic Director, Myron Michailidis and Elias Voudouris,
the opera will be shown in a new production by the GNO originating from the
celebrated Taormina Opera Festival and is directed by the experienced Italian
director Enrico Castiglione who is known for rendering his productions a quality of
film-making as well as a realistic point of view.

Carmen, one of the most emblematic operas, still challenges its audience as much as
when it was first staged, 140 years ago. The eponymous heroine defends her freedom
and her right to choose her lovers instead of her being chosen by them. The most
popular opera of the French repertoire, featuring wonderful arias and superb choruses,
will be conducted by Lukas Karytinos and directed by the distinguished British director
and Artistic Director of the Göteborg Opera, Stephen Langridge.

Jani Christou (1926-1970) was one of the most important personalities of the
international music avant-garde. By combining improvisation, stage action and
philosophical reflection, Christou pursued the traces of the avant-garde creating, thus,
a particularly idiosyncratic and beguiling musical universe. In its first production, the
newly-founded GNO Alternative Stage collaborates with the distinguished ensemble
of contemporary music, dissonArt, and with the Athens Youth Symphony Orchestra
and mounts two crucial works taken from the corpus of Jani Christou. The Strychnine
Lady (1967) is based on the composer’s recollection of dreams and upon Carl Young’s
psychoanalysis, the two of them making up a stage entity in which actors and musicians
involve the audience into an enthralling, and at the same time inscrutable, co-creation.
Anaparastasis III (The Pianist), (1968) is also a work of the composer’s late period and
one of the most popular of his entire oeuvre. The figure of the pianist, interpreted
alternately by Aris Servetalis and Lenio Liatsou, becomes the “tool” through which
the composer explores the mystic and dreamy rituals of artistic meta-praxis. The
art installation accompanying the works is created by Alexandros Psychoulis and the
production is directed by Alexandros Efklidis.
The concert will take place within the framework of “Metamorphosis: The SNFCC”
to the World, a four-day avant-garde cultural programme at the Stavros Niarchos
Foundation Cultural Center (SNFCC) hosting artists and programmes from all over
the world and with free entrance for the audience.

The show of the internationally acclaimed, new Ballet Director of the GNO, Andonis
Foniadakis, based upon the music of two leading Baroque music composers, Johann
Sebastian Bach and Georg Friedrich Händel, inaugurates Kalamata’s International
Dance Festival, in the wake of the immense hit of its shows in Athens.
The choreography of LINKS makes up a landscape in which the elements of fantasy, the
subconscious and mysticism alternate and enter into a discourse with blunt realism,
creating, thus, the ideal “habitat” into which the two composers encounter each
other; they never met throughout their lives despite the fact that they were born in
the same year – 1685 – and in neighbouring towns. The major success of the GNO
Ballet participates into the official programme of the most important Dance Festival
in Greece.
The Greek National Opera expresses its gratitude to GEA for its kind contribution with regard
to the related rights of the music.
