efforts. It’s always a good

industry. As for the Petster team, we are also ‘doing’ our part!
Just to announce that our project www.petsternetwork.com
will soon evolve into www.epetster.com.my, basically it is a
planned upgrade on the current features that we are offering.
I believe ePetster will become a successful e-concept of the
pet industry here in Malaysia. Curious? We have already
placed gigantic billboards as teasers and the real thing will
come in place not long after this - just keep in touch ya!
As usual, there are unlimited work to do and deadlines to
keep up but Petster Magazine will still be around for some
time. Many new advertisers has supported us and believe
me, from the support given, we’ll grow ... faster! Oh ya, we
are now FINALLY placed at Coffee Beans (Klang Valley outlets
only) and readers can always have a peaceful drink there
while reading our mag but remember to place the magazine
back at the rack as other readers would go searching for it too
ya. Sharing is always caring, and it’s always that way between
pet lovers, rite? See you guys at the upcoming events and

Dogathon Is Back!
Think streamers and bobbing balloons, decorating the clear blue morning sky.
Think cotton candy, carnival music, clowns and bright red noses. Think an open
green field, bordered by huge shady trees and cool lakes. Also games, booths and
food of every imaginable kind. Now add your best canine friend to the picture…
and you get Carnivale Canine -- Dogathon 2009!
Organized annually since 1997 by the Student Association (Veternak- Zoologico Club) of the
Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Universiti Putra Malaysia, this year’s Dogathon will be held on
the 16th of August, Sunday, from 7am to 2pm at Bukit Ekspo, UPM. The theme this year being
Carnivale Canine, the focus will be having as much carnivale-ey fun as possible.
According to Ms. Vivian Lee, the co-director of Dogathon 2009, the theme “Carnival Canine” was
chosen with a vision to make this Dogathon just simply an exuberant morning for owners to
spend with their dogs and their families, young and old alike, where they can play a variety of
games and win attractive prizes, get free doggie products and goodie bags, have a picnic under
the enormous leafy trees, shop around and see various dog-related products and services. At the
same time, to learn more about responsible pet ownership and acquire information about stray
animal issues from our dedicated ProKasih educational team. Dogathon serves as a charity drive
to raise funds for ProKasih, a faculty-run project aimed at controlling the stray animal population
in a more humane way. This project includes education of the public about stray animal issues,
and neutering of strays via a catch-neuter-release program. Apart from this, Dogathon also aims
to promote responsible pet ownership, along with increasing public awareness of professionals
involved with pet animals.
The star event of this year’s Dogathon is sure to be the Carnivale Dog Race, which is a 3km run
where dogs and owners will enjoy a morning sprint on the lush campus grounds of UPM. Along
the track, challenging obstacles and mystery treasures are also waiting to be unearthed. Master
Hunt is another regular popular attraction at Dogathon, which is a test of the bond between pet
and owner. Your dog will be required to make its way to you through a maze, guided only by your
voice at the end of the maze! Is your dog up to the challenge? Among the new games lined up this
year, fresh and exciting, are Speed-o-Eater, Clownie and Doggie, and Doggy-go-Round. Just what
exactly are these? No spoilers here… Come along and see for yourselves!
There are also amusement park games and horse riding, carnival-style, and also veterinary
consultation for your dog. Plus, booths selling pet products and pet-related services of all kinds.
There are games and activities for everyone at Dogathon, from young children to the elderly.
With no distinction made between pedigree and non-pedigree dogs, everyone is welcome, and
admission is free. On top of that, Dogathon was endorsed last
year by the Malaysia Book of Records as the Malaysian Biggest
Gathering of Dogs with over 600 dogs! Now you know you can’t

2ND SERIES OF PET WORLD EXHIBITION
PROMISES MORE
FUN & EXCITEMENT FOR PET LOVERS AND HOBBYISTS
KUALA LUMPUR, March 18, 2009 – Pet World Malaysia 2009 -- being its second series of the
Malaysian international pets and aquatics exhibition, will soon be held at Mid Valley Megamall
Exhibition Centre Kuala Lumpur coming July 3 to 5.
Organized by Fairs & Events Management Sdn Bhd (FEMSB), Pet World Malaysia 2009 is proud
to be endorsed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agro-Based Industry, Department of Fisheries
and Department of Veterinary Services. Due to the overwhelming positive respond from the first
exhibition held last year, Pet World Malaysia 2009 has now extended from one hall to three halls
to cater to a wider show profile which now includes the incorporation of Fishing & Outdoor Show
2009.
This exhibition has attracted leading brands and suppliers of pet foods and accessories such
as Eukanuba, IAMS, Blackwood as well as the animal society NGOs like SPCA and PAWS. The
exhibition features variety of pet foods, pet medicines and treatments, health care and grooming
products, fishing gears and accessories, outdoor tools and accessories, as well as related products
and services for pets. The three-day exhibition will also feature fun and exciting programs like the
dog competition organise by Pet-n-You, dog grooming competition & modeling show by Pets
Icon, cat competition by Kelab Kucing Malaysia as well as rabbit competition by Beh & Yo.
Chief Executive Officer of FEMSB, Mr. Jonathan Kan, stresses on the potential of expanding the
local pet industry towards a bigger scale in the international region. He also hopes to reinforce
and improvise the public awareness on the importance and understanding of proper maintenance
and healthcare for pets among the general public. Therefore, Pet World Malaysia 2009 will hold
seminars to educate the suppliers, pet store owners as well as pet owners in these important issues.
Pet World Malaysia 2009, according to Kan, would be an ideal platform to pull together suppliers,
pet lovers and hobbyist to assist in building the pet industry towards the next level. Entrance fee
to the Pet World Malaysia 2009 exhibition is RM5.00 for adults and RM2.00 for children. The threeday exhibition will be opened from 1000 hours to 2100 hours daily.

Is Your Dog A Fashion Victim?
“Dogs have become fashion statements, In that regard, they’re no different from
popular movies or hot foods or things like that.” – Quoted by Hal Herzog
Dogs’ clothing and accessories are the trendiest thing right
now. Bling collars, sunglasses, caps, and the latest up-todate fashion clothings and designer wears. Every pet owner
wants to glam up their own pooches and makes them the
“Hollywood Dog”. But are you dressing them up because you
think they needed it or because you yourself want to be a part
of the trend? In resulting him, being a fashion victim.
There is a different side of pet owners who complained that
dogs should NOT wear clothes and argued that the dogs

right clothes at the right time. During winter, dogs cannot

If it’s too cold outside, your dog might not want to go outside for their much needed exercise if

afraid of cold – like the Chihuahuas, and some dogs cannot bare heat – like the Huskies or Chow

Question: Should you spay your
cat?
Answer: Spaying is generally done through a cut
on the cat’s stomach, and it requires anesthesia.
There is some risk in that, and you should be
aware of it and talk to your vet about it. Some
people have had their cats die under anesthesia.
There are other risks to think about, however.
Cats that are not spayed are at a greater risk of
cancer later in life and are subject to infections of
the uterus. They also have a risk of dying if they
get pregnant. On balance, the risk is easily lower
with spaying the cat. But you should know there’s
a risk there and see if your vet can do anything
to minimize it. It’s also generally a hassle to deal
with unspayed cats. They will go into heat for
long periods, and will try desperately to escape
the house. They will meow constantly and attract
male cats to hang around outside the house.
Usually cats are spayed around 4 months.
Question: How do I stop my dog
from chasing cars, cats, and
people?
Answer: Dogs are natural “chasers.” They do it on
instinct - if something is running or moving away
from them, they want to chase it. Part of this is a
herding behavior - many dogs instinctually are
trying to “herd” whatever is running, and that is
more prevalent in some breeds that were bred by
people to herd livestock. Sometimes the dog is
doing it just to play, as chasing is a form of play
among young dogs. Other dogs do it as a form
of hunting. This is largely why dogs chase cats
and other small animals - it is their instinct to

hunt the sort of small animals they would eat in
the wild. Modern dogs may or may not actually
hurt the animal if they catch it, but it’s not a good
idea to find out. Don’t ever let your dog off a leash
outdoors if it has not been trained not to chase
things. When the dog gets caught up in the heat
of the moment, you can’t rely on it not to run out
into traffic or other dangerous behavior. It could
also hurt someone else’s pet. The general key to
training a dog not to chase things is to put it in
controlled situations where it is tempted to chase
something and teach it a command that means
to stop. You can use any short, one-syllable word
- “STOP” is actually a good one, or “HALT” since
people won’t use that in conversation as much.
Start out by training the dog indoors on a leash.
Hold the dog on the leash, and get a toy and show
it to the dog, saying “HALT.” Then throw the toy.
If the dog tries to run after it, say “HALT” loudly
and tug on the leash. Keep repeating this, with
praise if the dog doesn’t run after it. After awhile,
the dog should learn that the word “HALT” means
not to go after it. You can try it without the leash
once the dog has learned.
Then, if your dog has a problem chasing people
or cars, set up a controlled situation outside. Get
a friend to be the driver or runner (for the driver
of a car, it’s ESPECIALLY important - the person
has to know the dog may be running after him so
they can be very careful). Use the same command
on the dog after having the person go by. Again,
start with the leash on first, and once the dog has
got that down pat, try it without a leash. Your dog
will eventually learn the command. Use it before
the dog actually starts going after something. If
he starts looking at a car or a runner, say “halt”
beforehand and you have a much better shot
of getting the dog to do it. With small animals,
it may be harder. You can’t create a controlled
situation. The one thing you can do, however, is
introduce your dog to a cat in a situation where it
is not running away. If the dog is unfamiliar with
cats, bring one into the house in a cage. Let the
dog sniff it and feel it out. The dog will be much
less likely to injure a cat it is chasing if it views it as
a game instead of hunting, and if it gets used to
cats it won’t think of them as prey.

Preparations for CREATIVE grooming!
Annie talks about the things you should know before competing.
Ms Annie Goh is an American and Malaysian Certified
Master Groomer. She was the Best Creative Groomer,
2005 Malaysian Kennel Association (MKA) Dog
Grooming Show and Best Groomer in Show and Best
Creative Groomer, 2006 Malaysian Pet Groomers
Association (MPGA) 1st International Pet Grooming
Championship, Malaysia. She is presently an instructor
at House Of Groomers Academy.
General DOs & DON’Ts During Competitions :1. Anything goes in the creative styling class as long as it is
safe to put on the dog and safe for the contestant to use.
2. Decorative objects, such as bows, beads and glitter are
permitted.
3. Decorative objects, such as ribbons, rhinestones, or other
finishing decorations, are permitted.
4. Hair extensions of all colors are permitted.
5. Cosmetic finishing touches to enhance but not cover the
design are permitted.
6. Costumes and ornaments are permitted but must not, in
any way, hinder a dog’s ability to move, impair his/her vision
or inhibit free movement of his/her ears.
7. Glues must be water-soluble.
8. Hot glue guns are not permitted.
9. Coat coloring is permitted.
10. Holding sprays are allowed.
11. Coloring sprays are allowed.
12. Chalking products are allowed in all colors. 13. All products, decorations, sprays, chalks and costumes are allowed before and during the competition.
Preparation Requirements for the Competition Dog
- The competition dog must be prepped and ready for the judges’ inspection prior to check in
procedures.
- Coats should be freshly shampooed and dried, brushed, combed and free of mats.
- Corded coats must be clean and dry.
- Hand stripped coats must be clean and dry.
- Ears should be cleaned and free of hair.
- Hair between the pads, if applicable for the breed, should be trimmed.
- Toenails should be trimmed.
- Sanitary area and the genital and stomach areas should be trimmed, if applicable, according to
breed standard.
- All other trimming shall be done after the contest starts.

Judging Considerations
1. Originality and Creativity of the Styling Design
Is the design unique and has the design been used in previous Creative Competitions?
2. Degree of Intricacy of the Technical Finish
The degree (amount) of difficultly in achieving the design. The intricacy of the design. Are the clippered
lines clean and precise? Is the scissoring smooth and even?
3. Percentage of Design Completed in Ring
The percentage of the pre set pattern before the competition and the difficulty involved in the
percentage of the pattern achieved in the ring during the competition.
4. Brilliance and Clarity of the Coat Coloring
The percentage of the coat coloring before the competition and the percentage of coloring achieved
during the competition. The sharpness of the color lines, if applicable, when more than one color is
used on the creative design. The blending of the color lines, if applicable, when more than one color is
used on the creative design.
5. Quality and Quantity of Decorative Type Applications on the Dog
The amount and type of decorative objects applied during the competition will be considered and if
the dog’s safety or comfort has been compromised.
6. The Overall Presentation
The overall presentation created by the competitor are considered. The name of the presentation, the
styling of the competition dog, the coloring and decorative objects, the amount and type of props,
the contestant’s costume and table decorations and how they all relate to the overall theme of the
presentation are considered when judging the final presentation.

Amelia recommends Yuri Grooming & Training ...
Self-employed Amelia Liew Huann Ran, 24, runs her own successful event marketing company and
the experience has taught and made her strong in many ways. Well aware that the success of her
company hinges on her own ability to satisfy her clients, Amelia has made this saying her personal
motto: “My clients’ success will be my success.” Having grown as a single child in a single parent family,
she knows how important it is to be loving, caring and supportive of her mother. For Amelia, family
always comes first as nothing is comparable to the love and bond she shares with her mother. Amelia’s
love for animals prompted her to seek specialized skills in pet care and grooming. Her dream is to start
Malaysia’s first mobile pet grooming venture. To relax, Amelia swims, practises yoga, goes dancing and
plays the piano.
Petster Magazine : Congratulations Amelia that you’ve made it to the 18 finalists! Could you tell us
more about yourself than just being a beautiful swan?
Amelia : Thank you. Well, besides loving myself, I happen to love pets as well and that’s why
I feel that pet grooming is a knowledge that every pet lover should have. Pets aren’t like
human, they can’t groom themselves so we have to take care of them.
Petster Magazine : Ok, sounds fair enough. By the way, how you end up being a student here in
Yuri Grooming & Training?
Amelia : My mom is a regular customer here. After several discussions with Yuri, my mom
felt that this place is the right place for me to learn the ‘art’ of responsibility and also pet
grooming which is something different for me at first.

Petster Magazine : Are you trying to say that you are not being responsible enough?
Amelia : No, of course! I love my princess very much (her dog - Choko). She just felt that I
could make full use of my time and talents to try doing something for a change.
Petster Magazine : So, have you considered taking this industry as an business opportunity or just
merely as a hobby of interest?
Amelia : Why not business? After being here for some time to get my skills right, I realised
that pet grooming is kinda fun! I always hope that I could do something fun and cool for a
living. Hey guess what? Maybe I could start off with something like a mobile grooming or
petshop cum cafe kinda thingy ... who knows right?
Petster Magazine : Great, what do you think of Yuri Grooming & Training?
Amelia : Quite good to me especially Yuri herself, she can be very patient with me (Amelia’s
not so bright) and she’ll teach me with a good teaching manner. They have state-of-the-art
equipment for me to experiment and basically I’d learnt skills about dog spa, hair-dyeing
and also nail polishing. Oh yes, the people here are very friendly - that goes the same with
the students!
Petster Magazine : Any special incident you wanna share with us?
Amelia : Believe it or not, I got my lips once bitten by a dog that I am grooming on my
birthday. What a birthday gift!
Petster Magazine : You must have loved Yuri so much till you can decide to groom on your birthday
huh?
Amelia : Something like that ler ...
Petster Magazine : Ok, anyway, this would be our last SERIOUS question - What do you think of guy
groomers?
Amelia : Not gay definitely but adorable. I mean, I used to think of them as one but after
being here to ‘understand’ them, I finally knew that my perceptions are way too wrong !!!

Is Stephen Chow a true pet lover?
From the story movie of CJ7 directed by
Stephen Chow last year, most of the people
believe that the inspiration of the film is
from the flying saucers or outsider alien but
some media said that the inspiration is from
a pet, a dog called Bull Bull. This Bull Bull is
actually Stephen Chow’s lovely pet which
passed away many years ago. Bull Bull once
appeared as a guest appearance in Stephen
Chow’s movie ‘Flirting Scholar’.
Years before the
film being started,
Stephen Chow was
in a meeting with
a group of script
writers to discuss the plot where in the story,
a flying saucer crashes and an alien arrives
to the Earth. During that time they have no
idea on what would this alien look like. After a
few meetings, something reminded Stephen
of his lovely bulldog, Bull Bull which has
passed away and to commemorate his pet, he
decided to make a 3D visual effect of it as the
alien from outer space in the story.

Nowadays Yoga becomes famous among
people because they believe that it could
develop a continous growing awareness and
integration of all aspects of one’s physical,
emotional, and intellectual being.
Brenda Bryan, a pet lover who likes yoga
& massage, created “Doga” which is the
combination of all her interest, also known
as Human-Dog Yoga. The Doga makes you
strengthen over your yoga movements and it
also helps to grow the relationship between
you and your dog. For example, if you place
your puppy on your knee, slightly bring your
knee up and this movement will strengthen
your yoga movement. The Doga may bring
some ideas or inspirations for pet lovers. So
starting from today, use your creativity to
develop new activities with your pets!

How Cats Keep Your Health?
The Cat In Your Life ... (SOURCE : Laila A. Hardy, ASPCA)
It is one of those awful days when your alarm never goes off
and you spend the entire day playing catch up. While you are
running yourself ragged over projects and errands, your car
gives in to old age and goes caput. After the tow truck takes
your car and patience away, it is time to call it a day. Your
anxiety and frustration level has hit its all time high. Finally
when you make it home you are greeted by two of your
biggest fans Oscar and Sasha, two wonderful felines adopted
from the local SPCA. An uneventful day has yet to occur since
their arrival.
Still reeling from the day’s events you make your way to the
room, but not without Sasha doing her usual swift body
rub against your leg. After dropping your bags and settling
in, Oscar makes his way on to your lap and signals that he
would enjoy a few scratches behind the ear and neck. As you
engage, your body slowly starts to unwind. Your breathing starts to relax. Tension drains from your
shoulders. A smile comes about without any force. Before you know it, both you and Oscar are at
peace enjoying the moment. In these simple moments, thoughts of the day have drifted further
from your mind and your anxiety level has dropped, helping you let go of negative feelings that
have accumulated over the last 10 hours.
Sound unbelievable that a cat can do all this? Well, it is true. Studies have shown that the mere
act of stroking a cat for several minutes helps to release “feel good” endorphins in the brain,
producing the feeling of tranquility in the stroker. But petting alone is not the only stress reliever.
Depression and sadness are heightened by loneliness or a sense of isolation. Pets offer constant
companionship and unconditional love. For instance, when the kids have gone off to school or
a spouse is lost, being home alone can be overwhelming. But if you have an Oscar or a Sasha
to keep you company while reading the morning paper, loneliness isn’t all encompassing. Their
presence helps to contribute to a complete home.
Nurturing a cat is soothing and fulfills that certain need for humans to be caregivers. Shopping
takes on an additional dimension when you have a cat at home. Food, litter and toys need to be
added to your cart. What fun awaits when you have new treats and toys for the loyal kitty! Cats
love to explore and see what is in that shopping bag or behind that most fascinating closet door.
Joining in on some interactive cat play with a new feather wand or kitty fishing pole lightens up
your mood. Laughter and smiles seem to come when they usually wouldn’t.

In order to protect our health, studies have shown friends and family support is essential. Pets
help us sustain that healthy emotional balance when we treat them as family or friends. Having
a cat around contributes to the feeling of family, therefore contributes to a healthy balance. Pet
owners enter hospitals less frequently than non-pet owners; and when hospitalized, pet owners
have shorter stays. Pet keepers have a reason to get better. They have to get home to the cat!
How to Make a Scratching Pole For
A Cat? Better than your cats taking your sports rims as one ...
Is your cat scratching up your furniture and curtains leaving them in ruins? Before you throw the
cat out, or have it declawed in desperation, consider making a simple scratching pole. If you can
make a scratching pole that your cat prefers over anything else, you may solve your problem
and save your furniture and curtains from further destruction. It is actually quite easy to make a
scratching pole for a cat.
Here is a list of the supplies needed :One cedar post that is about 30” tall and at least 4” in diameter
A bundle of non-oiled sisal rope measuring a 1/2” wide
A piece of 3/4” plywood to make the base sturdy (at least 16 x 16 diameter)
1/2” roofing nails
Four 3/4” 16d coated sinker nails
DIRECTIONS: Before beginning you will want to make sure your post is dry so that there will not
be any shrinking of the post after the sisal is wrapped on. To make the post you might want to
wear a pair of work gloves when you wrap the sisal around the post. To start you will want to nail
the beginning of your rope all the way around the top of the post. Then you wind the rope around
and around and around the post very tightly so that there is no air space between the pieces of
rope. This process will take you all th e way down to the bottom, once again nail the end of your
rope all the way around the bottom of the post. Next you will want to nail the base on to the
post, use about four nails and pound them through the bottom of the plywood base and into the
bottom of the post. You now have a cat approved scratching post!
TRAINING: To introduce the post to your cat you may want to use catnip as a lure for older cats
(kittens younger then 5 months of age are not affected by catnip). Rub the catnip right into the
rope so that the cat can smell that wonderful smell. Once your cat has smelled the catnip scratch
your nails, gently, along the surface of the rope. This will help teach your cat where to scratch.
Once your cat begins to scratch, praise your cat, tell them what a good cat they are. You could
also reward your cat with a food t reat, cats love treats. This post can help save your furniture, if
your cat is using a certain corner of the couch for a scratching post start out your new post right
by the corner of the couch. Cover that corner of the couch with double-sided sticky tape that is
completely unattractive to your cat (the tape can easily be removed for entertaining company).
This will repel your cat away from your couch and right there is a post that they will love.

Litter Box Training Your Rabbit!
Some hints to get rid of the irritating ball bearings on the floor ...
Use a plastic cat pan
Basic plastic cat litter pans work best for bunny’s litter box. They come in sizes of small, medium,
large, and giant, and can be found at almost all pet stores for a nominal price. We recommend
sticking to the medium, large, or giant litter pans for most bunnies, unless your bunny is very tiny.
However, you can’t go wrong with a larger litter box that your bunny can grow into. Choosing the
size of pan to buy, will depend on the size of your bunny. If you have a pair of bunnies sharing the
same litterbox, you’ll want to get one very large box, or give the bunnies multiple boxes to keep
them well supplied with hay and fresh litter.
Setting-up the litter box
It is recommended to use fresh hay as a safe pet bedding for your bunny’s litter box. Use those
that do not contain any pine or cedar products, and also environmentally friendly. Fresh hay in the
box entices bunny to jump in and do his “business.” A clean box is with about 1 inch of clean fresh
hay covering the bottom. This will give the bunny a combination of oat and grass hay to nibble.
About 12 hours later, here’s a well-used box. You can see that bunny has created a “bathroom” end
and a the end with remaining clean hay.
Keep a Fresh Box
Change bunny’s box every day, to ensure a clean, fresh box. This will prevent bunny from heading
to cleaner places to eliminate. If your bunny does not soil his box completely within a 24-hour
period, simply add another large handful of hay to replenish his supply. But never go for more
than two days before giving bunny a fresh litter box. Once dirty, dump the entire contents of the
box into your “yard waste” container or regular trash, to dispose. (If you’re a gardener, bunny’s litter
box waste makes great composites!) Wash the box, and if urine build-up occurs in the bathroom
end, pour in some plain white vinegar to soak it clean. Rinse, wipe dry, then add fresh hay. Finally,
it’s important to remember to use bunny-safe litters
in your bunny’s box. Clay, or clumping litters for cats
can be dangerous to bunnies who may ingest some
of their litter while eating hay. Pine, cedar, or other
aromatic wood shavings may also be harmful to
bunny’s health. Sticking with a simple, paper-based,
recyclable litter provides bunny with a safe litter and
one that’s also environmentally friendly. DO NOT USE
clumping cat litters with rabbits. This litter clumps
when exposed to moisture, and it can’t tell the
difference between external and internal moisture.
Rabbits tend to nibble on everything, and should
they ingest clumping litter, they risk a potentially
deadly intestinal blockage.

Tortoise Dies In India
A creature that had been around to see it all ...
March 24, 2006 — Zoo officials in Kolkata said Thursday that a famed 255-year-old tortoise
brought to the eastern Indian city during the rule of the British East India Company has died.
The giant Aldabra tortoise, named Adwaitya, was one of four brought by British seamen from the
Seychelles Islands as gifts to Robert Clive of the East India Company in 1875. Adwaitya, whose
name means “the only one,” died after a string of illnesses, Kolkata zoo director Subir Chowdhury
told AFP Thursday. “Adwaitya, who delighted the zoo visitors for 131 years, died on Wednesday
morning,” Chowdhury said. “His shell will be preserved in the zoo. All zoo employees are saddened
by his death.”
The three other tortoises given as gifts to Clive died soon after they arrived in Kolkata, formerly
known as Calcutta, he said. “Adwaitya spent his early days in Robert Clive’s garden,” the zookeeper
said. He was later transferred to the Alipore Zoological Garden, located in the city’s southern
district, after it opened in 1875.
Despite his many years of life, he only became sick eight years ago when an infection was
detected in his legs, Chowdhury said. He was successfully treated at that time. “Our records show
the tortoise was born in 1750, but some have claimed he was born in 1705,” he said. He added that
the zoo will use carbon dating to determine his real age. Adwaitya became ill several months ago
after a crack developed around a wound on his chest, Chowdhury said.
Like all giant land tortoises, the average lifespan of an Aldabra tortoise is well beyond 100 years.
Most Aldabra tortoises are found on the Aldabra Atoll, part of the Seychelles Islands in the Indian
Ocean. The atoll has been protected from human influence since the late 19th century and is
home to some 152,000 giant tortoises, the world’s largest population of the animal, according to
the United Nations world heritage body.

Can Birds Live With Cats?
Many bird owners have more in common than just their love for their feathered friends
- they are also smitten with kittens! While birds and cats are natural enemies in the
wild, there are ways to train them to successfully live together in the same household.
With these tips on keeping the peace between your feathered friend and your furry
feline, you may find that keeping birds and cats together isn’t as difficult as you might
think!
Yes, cats and birds can live together harmoniously in the same house, as long as their owners are
willing to take the precautions that are necessary for the safety of both.
If you have a cat and want a bird, or vice versa, you should understand that in nature, the two
would be enemies -- predator and prey. While the natural roles of your pets can be altered, it’s
important that both are kept under close supervision to ensure that no disputes arise.
If your cat shows an interest in hunting your bird, try giving her a quick spritz with a water bottle.
Most of the time, this will be enough to curb a cat’s predatory instincts after a while. Likewise,
if your bird shows aggression to your cat, discipline is in order. Birds are able to catch certain
diseases from cats, and direct exposure to a cat’s fur (through biting, for example) can heighten
your feathered friend’s risk of contracting an illness. For this reason, and many more, you should
try to avoid any physical contact between a bird and a cat if at all possible.
With consistant training, both pets should learn to tolerate each other rather quickly. Many owners
have even been surprised to find that their birds and cats quite enjoy each other’s company under
proper supervision -- and that’s really something to squawk about!
Sometimes a cat is just playful, no intention at all to eat up
a beautiful bird ... or maybe not!
