W r i t e r a n d n i n ja h i s t o r i a n Antony Cummins and translation partner Yoshie Minami have recently completed the first full English translation of the text. In true ninja fashion, Metropolis sneaks a peek for you. FROM VOLUME I: PREFACE AND PROLOGUE INTRODUCTION T his writing is hereafter titled the Bansenshukai and f rom its beg inning to the end, it is in accord with important points found in the Kanrinseiyo manual. This Using the hand to identify which element of the zodiac is attached to a given situation. PATH OF THE NINJA Antony Cummins spoke to Metropolis about the journey leading to the book’s publication By Jeff W. Richards Did any of your beliefs about ninjutsu change during your research for the book? I have become firmer in my stance that there is no such thing as a special ninja hand-to-hand combat method. The idea of “ninja martial arts” is cemented in my mind as a fabrication of the 20th century. After meeting many Japanese researchers, this stance has been verified by their comments. But on a positive note, the 06 • WWW.METROPOLIS.CO.JP high standard of military skills performed by the real ninja has truly developed in my imagination and has left me wanting to show their true story. What made you want to tackle the Bansenshukai? It is the manual. Publishing it is one step in getting the English-speaking world to understand the mind of the ninja, but it is a massive step. We knew it would promote the real history of the ninja and fully open this hidden world for all to see. Now that it’s done, we’re waiting with baited breath for the world to respond to such a colossal amount of information. How did you find all of the original texts? The Bansenshukai is very easy to find. An electronic copy has been floating around the internet for years and a facsimile copy can be picked up for $1,000. We based our translation on the copy that is now kept Bansenshukai refers to ninjutsu and ninja tools, which have been kept secret by the eleven ninja of Iga and Koka. […] Also, I have collected all the ninjutsu strategies constructed by excellent generals in both Japan and China and I dare to release what has not been made known before. FROM VOLUME V-VII : NINJA NIGHT ATTACKING T he character for shinobi (忍) consists of Blade (刃) and Heart (心). Why was this used for the name of these skills? It is because the entire system of ninjutsu is based on bravery and valour. Therefore, those who have set their mind on this path should single-mindedly try to achieve bravery. To achieve this way you should keep the following in mind: If you do not know the following points, your efforts will be of no use. That is, you should throw away brute courage or blind daring and totally commit to the way through courage of duty. Even though brute courage is in essence, a form of courage, the courage a wise man should keep in mind is the type of courage that arises from a sense of duty. Brute courage may make you strong or hard out of temporary rage, but it is difficult to keep your mind strong and hard deep at the bottom of your heart as the rage calms down. Even if that strength through force gets to the bottom of your mind and makes you work brave and hard, it is just based on hot-blood and so in most cases it is no more than your blind rage acting and what you are trying to do is bring others to terms by force alone. As a result, you will not have foresight nor be ready to defend yourself fully, and you will only destroy yourself and will not ruin the enemy to any significant level. W hen you intend to infiltrate the enemy castle, you should go to the enemy province before the allied forces have advanced, and research to find someone who is out of employment and ambitious and wishes to acquire fame or bravery, or bears a grudge against or resents your enemy lord, also, commanders and so on, but he cannot express his grievance because of timing, or find someone in the area who has someone from their family within your own allies. Taking the appropriate opportunity, you should approach such a person by using appropriate measures and you should invite them to join your side. Sometimes, you should call on his place to bribe him with gold or nishiki (“expensive brocade”) and make this promise; if he achieves success in his tactics, he will be rewarded with a set amount of stipend and do this with the guarantee of the lord’s red seal. On that basis, you should take hostages from him and make him write an oath, and then place him into the enemy castle with a well considered plan. The enemy lord will have no doubts about him as he is from his own domain, so it will be as easy for him as getting into his own house. On a rainy night, if a watch fire is dead, you may be able to sneak up to the watch fire guard and kill him, or if you come across the enemy togiki (“listening scout”) you may kill or capture him also. There have been many instances of such A deadfall trap, ninja placed these around their houses and fortifications to dispel other ninja from infiltrating. in the National Archives of Japan which was given to the shogunate by real Koka. A few volumes were even published in Japanese, but our book is the first full version in any language. However, the rest of the manuals are buried deep, some in old collections, some in vast storage facilities. What experts did you consult? I stand by my statement that there is no such thing as a “ninja expert.” People have started to apply this label to me, something I fully disagree with. Recently Mie University has undertaken research on the collected ninja documents of Iga, so I hope there will be such a thing as a “expert” in the next generation. We are flying blind and learning as we go—a journey into the darkness, so to say. Is ninjutsu a philosophy or a martial art? Neither. It is a set of skills that aid two general areas. First there are skills that help support a secret agent on a spying mission, to gain restricted information and to identify if an enemy status is a truth or a cases since ancient times. Although you should do this in some situations, it should most definitely be avoided if it is only done when hot-blooded. Only do this if you need to, and if needed to succeed in infiltrating, or if you think you cannot get in there without disposing of them, in such a case you may kill that person. These two points hold true for the case the enemy are not leaving their castle. When you want to get into an enemy camp, you should go there stealthily on the night before, to record what the crests on their lanterns are like. Then you should go back and create a similar lantern yourself. When you get to the camp discreetly, quickly light the lantern and disguise yourself as a guard, night patrol or fireman or so on, according to the situation and infiltrate with tactics. W hen you are sneak ing around t he enemy castle, even pillars if seen in the moonlight, look like the enemy in silhouette. Not to mistake this, you should be aware that pillars are still and while people move, or that pillars are arrayed orderly and with the same height, while people will not appear to be in straight rows and have they will have differing heights. These pillars are normally for flags or pikes to be rested against. In an entire castle area, the outer enclosures or the third enclosures are usually surrounded by earthworks and bamboo thickets or it is also the case that the moat is often dry, making it is easy to infiltrate. However, there is little benefit in getting in at that point. If you go firstly to the third enclosure, then the second one and then to the main enclosure, you will have too many difficult obstacles to cross over, therefore it will ex haust you and, if you are not well enough equipped, it will take too much time and trouble, which makes it very likely that you, will be detected. Therefore, you should figure out the best plan using all kinds of ingenuity with the intent to infiltrate the second or main enclosure directly. When you steal in with the secret skills from The infamous and often mistaken “water-spider,” incorrectly thought to be used on the feet in pairs, is actually a single seat life raft to be used with special flippers to propel a ninja through the water. the kakure-mino no jutsu (“inv isible mantle skill”), you should employ yo-kei (“open disguise tactics”) such as katsura-otoko (“undercover agents”), kunoichi (“female agents”) or use the aid of bakemono-jutsu (“the art of copying the enemy clothes”) and so on. If you infiltrate by conducting this art completely, there are no castles or camps that you cannot infiltrate, no matter how impregnable they are. The Book of Ninja (Watkins Publishing, 2013, 544pp, ¥3,362) is available for preorder from Amazon Japan and will be in bookstores Nov 5. falsehood. Secondly, it is a set of skills for special ops and commandos, which allow someone to infiltrate an enemy position and burn it down or to steal information. A ninja followed the samurai philosophy and a did samurai martial arts, but they were a special breed of people who did something quite singular. What’s the biggest myth regarding the ninja? Most people think that they are separate from the samurai. The ninja were a part of samurai warfare and life. If I can change the readers’ understanding on anything, it would be that the ninja were in fact samurai themselves and that the ninja martial art does not exist. What techniques do you find most interesting? Without doubt it is “sleeping gas,” but I have yet to actually have it tested. You never know if “sleep” means death in medieval lingo. What do you have in line for your next project? We will be rebuilding an entire samurai school of war, including their ninja curriculum. Recently, we found the grave and manuals of the samurai Natori Masazumi and contacted the last living members of his family, who gave permission to reopen the school and publish the manual in English. Do you practice ninjutsu yourself? No. No one does. If they did, they would be put into prison. Ninjutsu involves espionage, murder, robbery, arson, poisoning, etc. I once asked a man who claimed to practice it if he had burnt any villages down that week. When he said no, I told him that he wasn’t doing ninjutsu. People can study ninjutsu—and it can add a vast benefit to a person’s life—but it cannot be practiced for real. Do you think there will ever be a realistic ninja movie? My greatest wish is that one day Hollywood will do a samurai film that shows the reality of the samurai and the ninja. Ninjas jumping through walls ready to die? No thank you. #1022• WWW.METROPOLIS.CO.JP • 07 Arts & Entertainment ALL THE BEST IN ARTS & CULTURE ACROSS THE METROPOLIS music for many years, who’s been to Tokyo with me many times as frontman in Galliano or MC Earl Zinger, is William Adamson. Liddell T here’s no getting away from it, Kazuki Umezawa is something of an otaku. Not only is he obviously deeply involved in his art—to the point where he probably doesn’t wash or bother communicating much with other humans—but the actual content of his art is clearly otaku as well, in the sense of showing an unhealthy interest in sailor suits, amongst other things. Naturally, for this very reason, he is being touted as an up-and-coming Japanese artist and even the next big thing. A series of his astonishing collage works is now on display at a free exhibition at the Diesel Gallery so you can find out what all the fuss is about. Umezawa’s collages typically feature an overwhelming flood of imagery: bits n’ pieces from comics, 08 • WWW.METROPOLIS.CO.JP ribbons, buildings, maps of Japan, and other objects. Take a step back and these become an almost abstract jumble. But take another couple of steps back and the abstract confusion seems to coalesce around some large eyeball or other prominent feature into a shaggy, psychedelic figure, eerily looking back at you. One work, an expansive digital print on a tarpaulin, spread across one of the gallery’s walls, is also enhanced by an augmented reality program on tablet computer that allows you to see the various elements of the work in isolation—at least virtually. Would you subject your body, face, ego and reputation to a beating in the ring? A surprising number of corporate leaders in Tokyo have accepted the challenge and stepped into the ring. The fact that it all takes place in a luxurious ballroom—Vegas-style—and proceeds go to charity, helps to take a little of the sting out of a right hook. “We are pleasantly surprised at just how many executives are out there who want to challenge themselves in Executive Fight Night,” says Dave Thomas, who is the vice president of marketing for Adidas Japan by day and fights under the name “Naughty Ninja” by night. Thomas organizes the event with Adidas colleague Eddie Nixon (a.k.a. “Nifty Ninja”) and Nathan Schmid (a.k.a. “Nimble Ninja”), owner of Tokyo Fitness and Club 360. Like many great ideas, the event was born during a Friday night on the town—but needed a lot to make it work. “None of us had ever organized a fighting event like this,” Thomas admits. “There was a lot to consider and do. We all have demanding jobs, so the work was done late into the night and on weekends.” At first, the trio brought some corporate sponsors and other organizers on board, but now Executive Fight Night III: Triple Thunder is set for November 8 at Grand Hyatt Tokyo in Roppongi. “When a friend of mine said that it was a charity event, I was in. When I found out it was a boxing event—that was a bonus,” says Tony Evans, area manager for the deVere Group, the event’s main sponsor. “I decided this would be a way to give back personally, as compassion makes us human.” Compassion wasn’t on the list of requirements for trainer Jan Kaszuba. “Contact training begins on day one,” he stated, adding that some of the fighters were in “terrible shape” when they first came to him. “Some of these people have never boxed and needed to learn how to give and take a punch correctly,” explains Kaszuba, who has competed in international MMA, Muay Thai and karate competitions. “I like to keep strategy as simple as possible because it often gets thrown out the window if it’s your first fight.” Ed Overy is one of those who went through Kaszuba’s training and lived to tell the tale. “By fight night, I was in the best physical condition I’d been in in my life,” says Overy, who fought in the first event at the age of 43. The Air New Zealand general manager hung a punching bag in his garage to train and felt ready to face a taller, heavier, and younger opponent. “I was 100% psychologically ready for the fight,” Overy recalls. “There was not a scenario that I had worked through that had me losing. It was an amazing feeling to step in that ring.” But after three two-minute rounds, things hadn’t exactly gone according to plan. “He consistently landed more blows on me,” Overy admits. “The brutality of it was intense. I got a few clean shots through but in the end, he landed more on me and won the fight by decision.” While the part-time boxers duked it out, the audience at the black-tie event enjoyed a fourcourse meal while mak ing contributions to Refugees International Japan, which funds projects in Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka and a host of other countries. “This event reaches a new audience for us and really gets people involved,” say Jane Best, the president of the NPO. “The boxers did a great job promoting the cause. Refugees find an outlet for their frustrations through sports, and sports therapy is important in projects that help refugees rebuild their self-confidence.” Is Overy ready to strap on the gloves again? “I don’t think I could find the mental motivation required to lift me to the level needed to get back in the ring,” he admits. “That said, the training was the best physical fitness I’ve ever done.” Executive Fight Night III. Now one of Japan's most consistently provocative directors returns with a look at the human stories—many of them foreign—that lie beneath the surface of Tokyo. Participants are given a special mobile radio and guidebook and then visit a range of spaces from restaurants and parks, while hearing about the people who live there, many of them Asian exchange students. The idea is to explore ideas of travel and Asian "otherness" or "heterotopia." Tickets can be exchanged for a tour kit (mobile radio and guide book) at the F/T info booth inside the Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Atrium. Nov 9-Dec 8, noon-7pm (various times), ¥1,000-3,500 (adv). A stage magician, an escape artist, a mentalist and a small-time trickster (Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody H a r re l s o n & D ave F ra nco) a re summoned together by a mysterious, apparently omniscient mastermind. A year later, backed by a Las Vegas billionaire (Michael Caine), they’ve become Sin City’s hottest attraction, “The Four Horsemen,” performing such illusions as robbing a Parisian bank using “teleportation” without leaving the stage, and then tossing the three-million euro-booty to the audience. But who’s calling the shots here? Morgan Freeman’s a cynical illusion debunker, and Mark Ruffalo’s the dogged FBI agent that thinks the crimes are real, working with Interpol hottie Melanie Laurent. We follow the quartet to picturesque locations like New Orleans and New York for more accomplished tricks. DEAD MAN DOWN NEW Danish director Niels Arden Oplev’s (Swedish The Girl with the Dragon T at to o) f i r s t E n g l i s h -l a n g u a g e feature is a heavily revenge-themed and glacially paced euro-flick with flashes of pointless violence and an explosive ending seemingly grafted on from another movie. A woman (Noomi Rapace) scarred in an auto accident black ma i ls her fel low d a m a ge d- s ou l ne i g hb or (C ol i n Farrell), a henchman for a local crime boss (Terrence Howard), into murdering the drunk who caused it. But he has his own dark secrets. Nicely filmed, though, and some fine performances despite the awkward dialogue and fragmentation. (112 min) SHOWING FROM OCT 26. THIRD STAR It’s absurd but spirited, and so fastpaced and dazzling you maybe don’t mind the dozens of plot holes and rug-pulls. The obligatory big reveal at the end is kind of disappointing, but with this journey, the pleasure’s in DIANA Well-intentioned but atrociously written and highly simplistic soap reduces the last two years of the Princess of Wales’s life to a tacky, hagiographic tabloid fantasy. Has to do with her love affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, who, we are told, rejected Diana because of Muslim family values and understandable worries about her intense media baggage. Dodi? A rebound fling manipulatively aimed at making Hasnat jealous. Naomi Watts puts in a flawless if shallow impersonation, and there are some nice lonely-princess montages, but it all goes poof as soon as anyone says anything. (113 min) eiga I k now what you’re thinking: Japan c o u l d n ’ t p o s s i b ly make yet another romantic drama about a damaged woman who lea r ns to love again, could they? ( Yo u we r e t h i n k i n g that right?) Well, yes—it could. Toho’s newest “blockbuster,” Kiyoku Yawaku, is based on the 13-volume manga by Ryo Ikuemi. Given the book sold 2.95 million copies, Toho might be right in thinking they have a market for this schlock. Add to that new Japanese superstar actress Masami Nagasawa and you have the building blocks of a boho box office. Kanna (Nagasawa) lost her high school sweetheart to a terrifying car accident and has been unable to love ever since. Jump eight years into the future and enter Roku (Masaki Okada), a handsome and passionate young man who falls for Kanna and will do anything to win her. The flick hits on all the familiar points and suggests a version of the tired “pure love” (“How does he know what I’m feeling?”). Can she heal enough to embrace love? You guess. (127 min.) Rob Schwartz 24 • WWW.METROPOLIS.CO.JP getting there. Not great cinema, and straddles the cusp between dumb and clever, but full of old-school showmanship and fun if you let it be. (115 min) THE STONE ROSES: MADE OF STONE Polished but clearly promotional do c u me nt a r y by s o c i a l-re a l i s t fiction filmmaker (and unabashed fan) Shane Meadows (This is England, Dead Man’s Shoes) about the resurrection and phenomenally successful reunion tour of the legendary band. The group’s dissolution in acrimony 16 years earlier and the ensuing court battles are mentioned but not dwelt upon. This will delight the group’s obviously avid followers and probably baffle anyone else (me) not intimately involved in the '90s Manchester indie-rock scene. Still, it’s well put together, and I liked it that Meadows includes some complete songs. (97 min) NEW Three lifelong friends (J. J. Feild, Tom Bu rke & Ada m Rober tson ) t a k e a f o u r t h , w h o ’s d y i n g o f cancer (Benedict Cumberbatch), for a last visit to his favorite place, Barafundle Bay in Wales. Can you guess what his secret agenda is? It’s a grueling trek, both physically, what with the wheelchair/cart, and emotionally, as each member of the quartet reveals hidden truths about himself. If this sounds a bit depressing to you, you have no idea! Despite the fine acting and a few moments of forced camaraderie, this somewhat talky flick is a downer on a level that you really need to be a Brit to enjoy. (92 min) VIOLET & DAISY D i re c to r i a l d e b ut b y G e o f f re y Fletcher, who won a screenwriting Oscar for Precious, attempts to juxtapose frothy teen girlishness with shocking violence, and mostly fails. A pair of teenage hitpersons (Alexis Bledel and Saoirse Ronan) is flummoxed by their latest target: a world-weary, cancer-ridden guy in trouble with the Mob who isn’t afraid of death (a magnificent James Gandolfini). None of this is of course the least bit plausible, and that’s artsy fartsy intentional. But the lack of dramatic credibility makes it hard to care, and despite a few magical Gandolfini moments, there is little depth here. Japanese title: Violet & Daisy: Tenshi no Shokeinin. Nicholas Sparks? Bing-bong! Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough are fine, but the sad news is that this pap is directed by the once-great Lasse Hallstrom (Chocolat, The Cider House Rules, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?). And this is his second Sparks job. Absolutely OMG-WTF coda involves a letter that would send anyone living on a real planet screaming for the hills. Shameless, Nick. Japanese title: Kimi ni Yomu Monogatari. (115 min) SHOWING FROM OCT 26. BROKEN CITY In this messy political potboiler, alcoholic low-rent P.I. and disgraced cop Mark Wahlberg is asked by the oily NYC mayor (Russell Crowe) to follow his cheating trophy wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones), while police commissioner Jeffrey Wright looks on skeptically. With a cast like this, how could you go wrong? Well, start with a preposterous central conceit, edit it with a chainsaw and cut drop some scenes entirely, just to assure complete incoherence. Then stir in some moral ambiguity and a few suspect coincidences. Some effective scenes elevate this to an entertaining diversion, but overall: broken movie. (109 min) movies news cinematic underground M W ore than 20 years after England’s premiere surreal comedy troupe lost one of its founding members, fans can revisit his life with the animated film A Liar’s Autobiography: The Untrue Story of Monty Python’s Graham Chapman. So why now? “Partly because we have only just discovered the tapes he left behind,” says Ben Timlett (pictured, right, with co-director Jeff Simpson). Timlett grew up around Monty Python, literally, after he discovered that his classmate was the son of Terry Jones, but was too young to know Chapman, who died of cancer in 1989. “When we did a documentary series on them, we got the sense of what an enigma Graham is,” he recalls. “He is sort of the forgotten Python, as he didn’t have the opportunity the others had to do what they wanted later on.” The tapes, an early attempt at an audio book, resurfaced, allowing Timlett and his team to mix Chapman’s voice with 3D animation from 14 different studios. “Because Graham goes into such incredible flights of fancy, we thought we could switch styles to emphasize that,” the director explains. “And it is a way of trying to get the tone of where he was in his life at the time.” And Chapman’s life went through major shifts of tone, from studying medicine to battling alcoholism to being one of the first British celebrities to come out as gay on a TV show his mother happened to be watching. The surviving Pythons lent their voices to the project, as did fan Cameron Diaz, who is cast in the role of Sigmund Freud. A Liar’s Autobiography will be released in Japan November 23. Chiddo is a native New Yorker and some Southerners might question his skills on the grill. But his time spent researching, testing and tasting recipes seems to more than make up for his birthplace. Authentic American smoked barbecue, typically using hickory, is done in several styles at Smokehouse. “There’s more meat on back ribs than spare ribs,” says Chiddo, so they do a Kansas-style back rib (¥2,200) with a genuinely spicy rub and is sauced before hitting the grill. While some expect the meat on ribs to fall off the bone, Chiddo says that authentic barbecue shouldn’t. The chopped pork shoulder (¥1,700) is done Carolina-style with a pepper and apple vinegar sauce, while the beef brisket (¥1,800) is also a dry rub—but Texas-style and enhanced with an espresso glaze that adds depth and richness. Even the chicken wings (¥900) on the appetizer menu are smoked and not deep-fried. And the bacon for the iceberg wedge salad (¥1,100) is twice smoked and served with a peppery blue cheese dressing. All barbecue dishes are served with your choice of four different sauces—the essence of any true ‘que. There is an umami-rich “Porter Pepper” sauce made with beer and molasses and a tangy “Carolina Vinegar” version with chili and honey. Japan’s beer, though, was to him, “… expensive and usually not very interesting.” While on a number of sabbaticals researching European approaches to the study of Japanese culture, friends in Belgium, Austria, with brown sugar while the “Voodoo Hot” is an exotic blend of fresh ginger and habaneros. Part of the fun of the meal is sampling your way through the sauces. Since they’re not available for takeaway (yet!), the restaurant is the only place to get your smackers on some. Side dishes (¥400) are as you would find back home in barbecue country, with creamy mac-ncheese, tomatoes with okra cooked al dente and fresh spinach in a light cream sauce. Their down-home corn bread is rich with butter and honey—crispy on the outside and dense in the middle. The menu is big with offerings for everyone, including catfish and chips (¥1,000), burgers (¥1,500), salads (from ¥1,100), and even a kid’s menu with mac-n-cheese, chicken fingers and Yamagata hot dogs (all with fries or potato salad, ¥800). Of course, there is a host of American-style desserts including pecan pie, warm apple crumble and banana cream pudding (from ¥650). As with other restaurants in the TY Harbor group there is an impressive beverage selection including their original microbrews (¥800) as well as a selection Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary took him round to their local bars and brew pubs where he fell in love with their traditional lagers and became consumed with a new research topic. When he settled back in Kyoto, he thought he would have to return to drinking the bland lagers of the big Japanese brewers—then he tasted a stellar Ginga Kogen weizen purchased at a shop in his neighborhood. He’s spent the following six years immersed in the world of Japanese ji-biru and the result is Craft Beer in Japan: The Essential Guide, the first English-language book on Japanese craft beer. As its title suggests, this is not a treatise on the history of beer and brewing in Japan. Meli does spend a few pages introducing the history of beer in Japan, detailing it’s resemblance to sake production (rice wine is brewed very much like beer), dispelling the propaganda of the refined Japanese palette, explaining the economics and taxation of the drink (beer, happoshu and more) and dispensing some beer-related Japanese vocabulary; but the bulk of this pocketable guide is all about how and where to experience the joys of this country’s quality microbrews Those readers who just want to know what beers to try or to cross off their list will benefit from the “Best-of Lists” supplied right up front. No need to scour the book, Meli provides his Dining Out of domestic and imported craft beers (¥850). The restaurant also runs a guest beer program, changing the taps or bottles on a monthly basis. Currently, there are beers from Hokkaido, Hyogo, California and Oregon on tap. Whiskey-with-an-“e” aficionados will be thrilled to find a strong selection of bourbon, rye and other sour mashes (from ¥800). The shots are all served on the rocks with a side of water, a great way to taste whiskey as it should be and see how the H20 opens their flavors up. In the front of the restaurant is a bar area, perfect for meeting friends for some drinks and appetizers. The main dining room that overlooks the open kitchen is dotted with small tables and to top of the décor, ambient lighting hangs from the ceiling in what else—smoke-colored glass balls. A modern country music soundtrack plays during the day, but after the sun goes down it’s all Delta blues. When the weather is good the back wall of windows opens up onto a residential street. Smokehouse is a well-oiled (and sauced!) machine that offers great value for money— although your vegetarian friends might beg to differ. J/E Menu in Japanese & English Lunch from ¥1,500, dinner from ¥4,000 All nonsmoking Try to secure a cozy booth Artisan whiskeys, some available for the first time in Japan Vegetarians and health-food junkies beware! 5-17-13 Jingumae, Shibuya-ku Open 11:30am-10pm daily www.tyharborbrewing.co.jp/en/smokehouse/ lists in alphabetical order within sections on small and large brew pubs, beers by style, top overall breweries as well as specia l ment ions and up-and-comers to slake your rising thirst. Then he presents a section of all t he ji-bir u fests on the yearly calendar so you can plan your drinking ahead of time. The rest of the book is a guide to over 219 breweries in Japan, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, complete with ratings, origins, full contact details and independent tasting notes. Meli also lists the big four and their premium beers with tasting notes, as most are bound to down them on occasion. He caps off the book with recommendations for 136 bars, pubs, taprooms markets and shops to buy and drink quality Japanese microbrew. If you love quality beer, this is an easily recommended book to stash in your attaché or backpack. How fast can things change? A pivotal perspective indeed. Mercury retrograde, Saturn and the Sun unearth anything that can be shaken loose. While that may not be fun or even pretty, once it’s cleared you gain the freedom and clarity you’ve been craving. Trust that your spirit is moving faster than your thoughts. Give yourself a chance to feel the breeze with unearthly ease. All those planets (Saturn, the Sun and Mercury retrograde) in secretive Scorpio opposite your sign bring issues of possessive power plays into your relationship. This can be a business or domestic connection. Use your strength in standing your ground which is the Bulls’ forte. The good news is, Venus in your solar eighth house gifts you in shared resources – loving, transforming, sexy! Of all the zodiac, you know how important it is to keep moving. You like to stay busy and your best friends are the most interesting. Jupiter and Dark Moon Lilith currently reside in your solar second house. There’s temptation to spend money on something and sweep it under the rug this week. Consider the long view. Is the fun and frolic worth the potential undertow? This will not stay secret for long. With Jupiter in your sign, you have the chance to travel or fall in love in another country. With Dark Moon Lilith in your sign you feel like taking a chance and being naughty. The Moon opposite Pluto on Friday puts a bump in your airstream so buckle up and bring your favorite toys. Get the rest so you can enjoy the recreation. Pallas Athene in your solar second house means finances from the unusual. LEO VIRGO Aug 23, 24~Sep 22, 23 ♥♥♥ ¥¥¥ ♣♣ Sep 23, 24~Oct 22, 23 ♥♥ ¥¥ ♣♣♣♣ LIBRA SCORPIO Mars, the energizer, is in your money house. You can increase your finances this week. Decisions need to be quick and boldly executed. Vesta and Ceres are in the same sector. They will give you the wisdom and emotional support to move in a direction that serves your best interests. Watch for moody attempts at make-overs from those who are lagging behind. Don’t let them trip you up. There’s no rush. Or is there? Mars in your sign helps you move faster than usual. But if someone collides with you, you may have to stop. While this week’s obstacles look like Vesuvius rising, they’re actually a release of many years of unexpressed feelings. Our planet can only handle so much Mercury retrograde and your friends will help you get through rough waters. Avoid the rip tides. Your strength is untying the knots in your dream catcher. You might ask yourself, what do I really want? Mercury retrograde is placing options in your communications sector. You may choose to tread water before diving to the next level. Mars, Vesta and Ceres are in your solar twelfth house. They show you how to combine wisdom with selfnurturing while you take action to clear the decks. Scorpios rule the roost this week but watch what comes down the pike. Turn on your intuition ignition. The reason for this is Mercury retrograde in your sign. You’re in great shape, but Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the placement of the Moon and Mars put a magnifying glass on your every thought and action. This much scrutiny may be hard to bear but it’s meant to clear the past and begin again. SAGITTARIUS CAPRICORN AQUARIUS Jan 20, 21~Feb 18, 19 ♥♥♥ ¥¥¥ ♣♣ Feb 19, 20~Mar 20, 21 ♥♥♥ ¥¥¥¥ ♣♣♣ Watch this week. Take your time. Ve n u s i n yo u r s i g n m a ke s yo u ultra-popular. Everyone wants you. However, Mercury is retrograde in your solar twelfth house. Saturn and the Sun are there too. Not everything has risen to the surface. So if you are not satisfied with current results, give yourself and others breathing space. There is more to come, and what seems perplexing now will make more sense next week. An interesting bit of news is about to be revealed. Mercury is applying to the Part of Fortune in your sign. Saturn and the Sun are following suit. What this means is that after you receive your ‘information’, which comes from friends or a group association, you can stabilize areas of your life that have been wobbly. And your sense of self is cleared to go forward with a sense that you have found your niche. Career matters are moving on-course as the Sun shines its heart light in this sector of your chart. Saturn and Mercury ask for precision in your choices this week. The Sun square Moon aspect as the weekend begins asks who is the authority. Unusually, this is as much about who wants to take responsibility in an area few choose to tread. How’s your love life? You may meet a great mate through a friendly encounter. You’re in everyone’s pocket this week. The intensity builds and Venus in your career sector brings you the contacts you need. You’re hopping and skipping and finding your way through life’s latest maze. If you’re offered a bonus, take it. This transit only lasts until the first week of November. Wisdom and energy prevails if you’re in a relationship. If you’re a singleton this week, check out the mirror and smile at what you see. Tony sounds like Captain Obvious. —hurvj I think it’s important to hear other people’s stories, not just that of one person. I really enjoyed reading this. I had a terribly difficult time when Regarding “West Winds” (The Last Word, September 27): After 51 years here, I can tell you that Lisa Gay’s giddy, Pollyanna-esque suggestions that Japan welcome more Chinese tourists in the name of internationalization and rosy exchange programs just aren’t going to fly. Ask around, Lisa, dear: regardless of Chinese youths’ bourgeois affection for Uniqlo (mostly made in China, by the way) and Muji, the vast majority of Japanese would love to have the extra income—without the extra visitors. And just back from a visit to Siem Reap, Cambodia, I understand very well why. The ubiquitous Chinese tour groups are huge, loud, rude, unruly, garishly dressed and accordingly visually and vocally dominate the CANCER Oct 23, 24~Nov 21, 22 ♥♥♥ ¥¥¥ ♣♣♣♣ PISCES twitter.com/MetropolisTokyo ancient Khmer landscapes. Sadly, they’re only slightly less odious at the Killing Fields in Phnom Penh, site of unspeakable atrocities their own government inspired. You’ll never hear it spoken openly, but I doubt very much indeed the Japanese would genuinely welcome any such tourism.—Aretha Jones LANGUAGE LESSONS Regarding “Ill Communication” (The Last Word, August 30): My experience when first learning conversational Japanese was that my friends and co-workers would respond to me in English. This was initially frustrating, but I realized that my presence allowed them a rare chance to let their guard down and practice their English speaking skills with a native speaker about topics that were meaningful to them, not just academic exercises. —Zenkakuji I got a Japanese boyfriend and moved in with him. My Japanese was super basic and we could hardly have a conversation at first because I was self-conscious about my Japanese... I also started working in an izakaya which has helped loads with my vocabulary and given me many new food experiences I would never have dared to try otherwise... I don’t understand how people have such a hard time finding people willing to speak to them in Japanese in the big cities. Hang out with Japanese people who speak no English. There is no direct connection; several trains are needed. As you near a ticket gate en route, you have your Suica in your hand. Invariably, the person in front of you does not and neither does he/ she move to the side. A man pats himself down like an airport security check; a woman fumbles in her purse. If you push past, you are a rude gaijin. If you don’t, you’re a late gaijin. In either case, you have confirmed expectations. Allan Murphy is a cross-cultural trainer, writer and photographer. Shake, edit, click. A t times, it seems the Big Mikan is influenced by a special force. Dr. John put it well when he sang, “I was in the right place, but it must’ve been the wrong time.” Some refer to it as karma. I call it Murphy’s Law— the Japanese version. W hen you’re a pedestrian, taxis zip by. They floor it through yellow traffic signals and pass slow vehicles without hesitation. However, when you are a passenger, things are quite different. The driver acts as if operating a school bus. He stops when signals turn amber or when children would like to cross the road bet ween crosswalks or when someone wants to enter the road from a parking lot. He is so kind, so courteous. Consequently, numbers on the meter tumble rapidly as if in a pachinko parlor. Typically, he’s just arrived from Sendai and is not quite sure where Shinjuku is. More than once, I suggested the driver and I change roles. R est assured, whenever you go to the swimming pool, you’ll have just put a toe in the water when it’s time for the five-minute rest a split-second decision over where to stand. You spot him—he’s sitting fidgeting and looking at his watch. He’s sure to be getting off soon and you’ll have his seat. As the stations pass, he’s looking out the window to get his bearings. Any moment now. You’ll be able to read the paper, do the sudoku, check email and perhaps fire off a few. Suddenly, the woman on his right stands up and leaves and the man next to you slides into her seat. Fidget, watch, bearings. After 30 minutes of standing, hoping and praying, you arrive at your station tired and annoyed. Sitting man gets off at the next stop. TYPICALLY, HE’S JUST ARRIVED FROM SENDAI AND IS NOT QUITE SURE WHERE SHINJUKU IS. MORE THAN ONCE, I SUGGESTED THE DRIVER AND I CHANGE ROLES.” period. Such tranquility as there may be is shattered by a long and loud announcement that echoes in the confines of the pool area. And nobody seems to be listening. M any are the bakeries that display a large color poster of baguettes, a Camembert sandwich, a bowl of olives and the like. It’s virtually guaranteed these establishments do not sell any of these items. The “French” bread is as limp as an Irishman after six pints of Guinness on a Friday night; the sandwiches are made from crust-less, tasteless white bread and are smothered in cellophane. And then there is the yakisoba pan. The picture is there just for the ambience. When it comes to Mexican restaurants, the taste of the guacamole is inversely proportional to the number of sombreros on display. T he morning commute is t he hardest part of your day. But you’ve learned a trick or two over t he years. W hen you board t he crowded train, you’ve got to make I t is Friday afternoon and you realize that you need some cash for the weekend. Until this moment, your bank’s ATMs have been on every other street corner. But now they have vanished. You walk for blocks gazing at both sides of the street searching in vain for the colorful logo. Have they gone out of business? The banks you don’t deal with seem ubiquitous. Of course, you could pay the ¥105 service charge at any ATM. But it’s the principal: why pay to get your own money? Friday evening is fast approaching. You bite the bullet, pay the fee and get some cash. Shoganai. Yes, but when you turn the next corner … Lesson learned: measure twice and cut once.
