Galway Film Fleadh
TUES 7 – SUN 12 JULY 2009
The Galway Film Fleadh will be celebrating its 21st Birthday party in style - hosting international features,
documentaries, new Irish shorts and World Premieres of Irish Film features. This year, the Fleadh has selected
some uplifting and inspiring feature films which pepper the programme. Baraboo tells the story of a single
mother’s struggle to run a motel - a film that offers a touching, funny and compassionate study of how
strangers become friends, and friends become family. Sugar, Ricky and The Maid and are among the titles that
will have you leaving the cinema with your spirits raised and a smile on your face.
As ever, our documentary lineup is studded with pearls: As those fashionistas out there will know, Vogue
publish twelve issues per year - but only one of these sets the style for the world more than any other
publication: The September Issue. In this all-access documentary we see Anna Wintour quest to edit
Vogue’s biggest ever September issue (ever see The Devil Wears Prada?). Ngawang Choephel is both a
filmmaker and archivist of cultural traditions, when he traveled to his homeland to record songs he
started to shoot Tibet In Song: his passionate testament for the value of cultural heritage in the face
of adversity. Such are the times we are in, The Red Tail tells the story of the human devastation
that accompanies a company’s downscaling: Roy Koch has been laid-off from him job as an
airline mechanic - his job is outsourced along with hundreds of others, to China. In this timely
documentary, he travels to China to meet his replacement and to come to terms with his new
life. Irish films feature proudly in this year’s line-up. Conor Horgan’s chilling One Hundred
Mornings, or Ken Wardrops’ His And Hers, Brendan Muldowneys’ Savage – all Irish films, all
world premieres, and all debut features.
The Fleadh is a festival of discovery, and this
summer we invite you to navigate through a
treasure trove of cinematic gems.
Looking forward to seeing you at the
Fleadh.

Dorothy believes her 63rd birthday will mirror
every other day: cleaning the house and reciting
poetry to her beloved turtles while her husband
Richard works late with his young secretary. But
past and present events collide with catastrophic
consequences for everyone, even the turtles.
‘Have you ever told yourself an unforgivable lie?’
A female American soldier facing a court-martial for
torture and prisoner abuse, a British former UN weapons
inspector exposed as a source for a BBC journalist, and an
Iraqi woman pursued by Saddam Hussein’s secret police;
each wrestle with the truth in Judith Thompson’s urgent,
hard-hitting and devastating new play.
The Royal Exchange has been at the centre of theatrical
endeavour in the UK for more than 30 years.

FURIOSO
Choreography Michael Clark
Lighting Design Charles Atlas
Created by Yaron Lifschitz
and the Circa Ensemble
Since forming his company 25 years ago, Michael Clark has changed the
face of British dance and is renowned for legendary collaborations with
bands, fashion designers and visual artists.
Circa, Australia’s premier contemporary physical theatre
company, return to Galway Arts Festival following their
sell-out performances in 2007 and 2008, for the European
premiere of their new show. Furioso, is a physically
astonishing show with explosive encounters, dynamic group
scenes and achingly beautiful solos.
Michael Clark Company’s new production evolves from his admiration
for the music of rock’s holy trinity, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed,
who worked in close proximity during the 1970s.
“One of Britain’s most important living creators of dance.”

ensemble do such incredible things with their bodies.”

William Shakespeare would delight in the compelling, audaciously cheeky
theatre of Edward Hall and his award–winning company Propeller. Hall’s
mischievous, highly physical approach sends up Shakespeare’s intricate tangling
between the sexes. Propeller’s staging of The Merchant of Venice is a work that
poses still–incendiary questions about truth, morality, and prejudice.

TOM MURPHY
Direct from Galway Arts Festival, writer Tom Murphy
(Bailegangaire, Conversations on a Homecoming) and
director Garry Hynes once again join forces to stage
what is widely regarded as Murphy’s masterpiece. This
searching, challenging and funny play deals with seven
days in the relationship between Dynamatologist JPW
King, a quack self-help therapist living in Dublin but
born and brought up in England, and the mysterious
Irishman, a despairing property magnate who seeks out
King to help him sing like the great Italian opera singer
Beniamino Gigli.
By Darlene Craviotto
Paula has been a regular principal singer with the Drawing Room
Opera and at the National Concert Hall Dublin, and Sinead has
also appeared as a soloist at the National Concert Hall in Dublin;
before moving to the UK where she now works as a composer/

Why Men Marry
“What can I say about that night?
Power Performance Academy
Sex is magical. Men are like magicians. We’ve got to pull
that rabbit out of the hat. Sometimes, we don’t come up
with the rabbit. Sometimes it’s a gerbil. Sometimes it’s a
mouse. A sleepy mouse. And when I looked closer I could
see that my mouse wasn’t asleep. He was dead.”
Peter Pan
Based upon James M. Barrie’s play
about the boy who refuses to grow up
and can fly.
Directed by Brian & Sean Power
Choreographed by Cherie Worthington
Eyre
The fun begins in the London nursery of the Darling family
where three children are visited by Peter Pan, who, with
the help of his tiny friend, the fairy, Tinkerbell, takes them
on a magical flight to Never Land.
Take this chance to catch Peadar de Burca’s new stand-up
show, Why Men Marry before it sets off to the Edinburgh
Festival and tours the country.
From the man who brought you Why Men Cheat and
What Men Want comes the final instalment of the ‘Men
Trilogy’…be afraid …be very afraid!

Mephisto Theatre Company
This enchanted island is home to Peter and numerous and
colourful characters of Never Land including The Lost
Boys, Mermaids, Pirates, Indians, Fairies, and the
scheming and evil Captain Hook who is as intent
on defeating Peter Pan as he is on from escaping the
tick-tocking, larger than life Mr Grin, the Crocodile,
who once ate his hand.
THE MORNING AFTER OPTIMISM
By Tom Murphy
First performed in 1971, this epic fantasy which
is set in a lush, mystical forest features James and
Rosie; a pimp and his whore, childlike characters
on the run, who find themselves unable or
unwilling to leave the surreal maze. Deep within
they discover the fairytale-esque Edmund
and Anastasia who set in motion a rocketing
exploration of innocence, illusion and freedom.
See Peter Pan fly in this colourful show which is full
of music, song, and dance and fun for all ages.

Comedy Sensation
A trio of 70-something hard-working Dublin
cleaners are facing the axe. They might be past
their best, beyond their sell by date and over
the hill but they certainly won’t take threats of
redundancy lying down.
These game ‘girls’ set up a phone sex service,
know as “The Telephone Belles”, and that’s when
the fun really begins. Their bosses don’t know
about it, their families would never guess and their
very willing customers are none the wiser.
They’re the only chat-line girls with dusters,

FLAMENCO meets
EASTERN DANCE
Flamenco meets Eastern Dance is the unique union
of two of the most passionate and powerful dance
cultures. It is dramatically performed by International
Artist YOLANDA SOBRADO - whose dance
background began in the 80s. She has worked
with such prestigious choreographers as Hoyos,
Manuela Vargos and Jose Greco. In 1996 Yolanda
joined the now infamous Irish musical Production
RIVERDANCE and also performed in their 10th
Anniversary Gala Show in Radio City, New York.
Appearing together for the first time in this 2
hour Show - YOLANDA shares the stage with the
unforgettable artist YASMINA - whose professional
career as both performer and choreographer has
received a multitude of glowing reviews for Shows
she both performs in and produces; as well as her
performances on ZOOROPA Europe with U2 and in
The Royal Albert Hall with Demis Roussos.

Bob & Renee (Fair City)
A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters chronicles the
relationship between Andy and Melissa
solely through their correspondence. The
play tells the story of Andrew Makepeace
Ladd and Melissa Gardner, whose
poignantly funny friendship and ill-fated
romance takes them from second grade
through adolescence, maturity, and into
middle age.
Their words are both hysterical and moving
and as the play unfolds the audience comes
to know both of them intimately - from
their strict WASP upbringing, through later
life political aspirations, love affairs, military
service and artistic ambitions.
A smash hit both off and on Broadway, Love
Letters captures Andy and Melissa with a
precision of detail and depth of feeling only
Gurney can command.

Of Mice and Men
By John Steinbeck
The Keegan Theatre returns to Ireland with
John Steinbeck’s classic Of Mice and Men
Of Mice and Men is the intimate portrait of two men
who cherish the slim bond between them and the
dream they share in a world marred by petty tyranny,
misunderstanding, jealousy, and callousness. Clinging
to each other in their loneliness and alienation,
George and his simple-minded friend Lenny dream, as
drifters will, of a place to call their own. This is a tale
of friendship, dreams, and violence set in California
during the Great Depression.

quick in his little story.” The New York Times

“La Compañía” first staged Happy Days
in its original English version in Argentina
back in 1998.
La Compañía
The success of this first production, which
rewarded the group with the “Theatre of
the World Award”, became a benchmark
against which the company’s subsequent
works have been conceived in order to
embody Beckett’s humorous conception of
the absurdity of life and his compassionate
acceptance of human fallibility.
Samuel Beckett’s
Happy Days
Ten years on, the members of La Compañía
felt the professional experience they had
gained during that time warranted a revival
of Happy Days which reopened at the 2008

success both from public and critic.

Much of the comedy of the play is derived from the efforts
of the production crew to create the proper “Irish feel”, a
romanticized notion that often conflicts with the reality of
daily life, and that it calls upon the cast of two to perform
all 15 characters (men and women), often switching gender
and voice with swift dexterity and the absolute bare
minimum of costume changes - a hat here, a jacket there. Awards
Irish Times/ESB Irish Theatre Award for Best Production in 1999.

We’ve been busy!
Since March 2007 and in the run up to the Town
Hall Theatre’s 15th anniversary next year, we
have undertaken a significant number of facility
enhancements and technical upgrades including
the installation of new seating, a state-of-theart Digital Projection System, a new telephone
system, a database-driven box office system, an
infrared transmission/loop system for the benefit
of members of the audience with a hearing
impediment and other enhancements including a
more user-friendly website and more extensive
distribution of programme information. We have
also recently re-painted both theatres, internally
and externally and installed a new floor at the
Black Box. Plans have been drawn up to next
install a new (automated) flying system in the
Town Hall Theatre and to undertake a range of
other (mostly unseen yet essential technical)
upgrades, as funding becomes available.
This ambitious programme will require a
total investment in the region of E750,000 with
