The Royal Exchange has been at the centre of theatrical endeavour in the UK for more than 30 years. Circa, Australia’s premier contemporary physical theatre company, return to Galway Arts Festival following their sell-out performances in 2007 and 2008, for the European premiere of their new show. Furioso, is a physically astonishing show with explosive encounters, dynamic group scenes and achingly beautiful solos. Michael Clark Company’s new production evolves from his admiration for the music of rock’s holy trinity, David Bowie, Iggy Pop and Lou Reed, who worked in close proximity during the 1970s. “One of Britain’s most important living creators of dance.” The Daily Telegraph “No amount of words could really describe what happens or the range of emotions one feels in watching such an ensemble do such incredible things with their bodies.” ABC Australia Black Box Theatre Black Box Theatre GALWAY ARTS FESTIVAL 09 GALWAY ARTS FESTIVAL 09 Wed 15 - Sat 18 July 8pm Tickets E25*/E20* concession “If there are better productions of these plays this year, (Midsummer and The Merchant of Venice) or even in the next few years, I will be astonished.” The Guardian IRISH PREMIERE Thurs 23 & Sat 25 July 8pm Matinee Fri 24 July 2pm Tickets E25*/E20* concession “The daring, the dazzle and the pure craft of this company... absolutely exhilarating” The New York Times ENGLAND Propeller Propeller By William Shakespeare Directed by Edward Hall By William Shakespeare Directed by Edward Hall THE MERCHANT OF VENICE A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM A Midsummer Night’s Dream undergoes a riotous re-working by Edward Hall. Devoted to authoritative spins on Shakespeare’s works, the award-winning company tackles the play with typical gusto, capitalizing on its dreamlike qualities while never losing sight of its touching and wildly captivating plot. Town Hall Theatre Town Hall Theatre William Shakespeare would delight in the compelling, audaciously cheeky theatre of Edward Hall and his award–winning company Propeller. Hall’s mischievous, highly physical approach sends up Shakespeare’s intricate tangling between the sexes. Propeller’s staging of The Merchant of Venice is a work that poses still–incendiary questions about truth, morality, and prejudice. Clinging to each other in their loneliness and alienation, George and his simple-minded friend Lenny dream, as drifters will, of a place to call their own. This is a tale of friendship, dreams, and violence set in California during the Great Depression. “In sure, raucous, vulgar Americanism, Steinbeck has touched the quick in his little story.” The New York Times Town Hall Theatre These guys are irrepressible. They have established themselves as the most successful classical crossover artists to emerge from Ireland. While each of them have been influenced by the musical traditions from their own individual parts of Ireland, these talented tenors combine to suit classical, folk, Irish and pop genres. Thurs 24 & Fri 25 September 8pm Tickets E20*/E18* conc. “La Compañía” first staged Happy Days in its original English version in Argentina back in 1998. La Compañía The success of this first production, which rewarded the group with the “Theatre of the World Award”, became a benchmark against which the company’s subsequent works have been conceived in order to embody Beckett’s humorous conception of the absurdity of life and his compassionate acceptance of human fallibility. Samuel Beckett’s Happy Days Ten years on, the members of La Compañía felt the professional experience they had gained during that time warranted a revival of Happy Days which reopened at the 2008 Beckett Festival in Buenos Aires with great success both from public and critic. The story centers on Charlie Conlon and Jake Quinn, who, like much of the town, are employed as extras for the filming. During the week of the 20th - 27th of September twelve short films (12 min. & under) selected from over 500 entries, face their toughest challenge when they screen to an estimated audience of 80,000+ in over 200 cities spanning five continents in the 12th Annual MANHATTAN SHORT Film Festival. These films will not only entertain a global audience from as far North as St Petersburg Russia to as far South as Melbourne Australia, but will be judged by them as well. For more www.ManhattanShort.com Town Hall Theatre Much of the comedy of the play is derived from the efforts of the production crew to create the proper “Irish feel”, a romanticized notion that often conflicts with the reality of daily life, and that it calls upon the cast of two to perform all 15 characters (men and women), often switching gender and voice with swift dexterity and the absolute bare minimum of costume changes - a hat here, a jacket there. Since March 2007 and in the run up to the Town Hall Theatre’s 15th anniversary next year, we have undertaken a significant number of facility enhancements and technical upgrades including the installation of new seating, a state-of-theart Digital Projection System, a new telephone system, a database-driven box office system, an infrared transmission/loop system for the benefit of members of the audience with a hearing impediment and other enhancements including a more user-friendly website and more extensive distribution of programme information. We have also recently re-painted both theatres, internally and externally and installed a new floor at the Black Box. Plans have been drawn up to next install a new (automated) flying system in the Town Hall Theatre and to undertake a range of other (mostly unseen yet essential technical) upgrades, as funding becomes available. This ambitious programme will require a total investment in the region of E750,000 with the theatre committing to raising 1/3 of this itself and to generating the balance from a range of local and national sources. We already have E70,000 of our own contribution in place and to assist the Theatre raise the additional E180,000 within three years, we have undertaken a number of internal cost-cutting measures and also introduced a 50cent Refurbishment & Development Levy on every ticket sold here since April.
