Saint Francis Service Dogs` Veteran Service Dog Program
Saint Francis Service Dogs’
Veteran Service Dog Program
Hundreds of thousands of veterans of the Iraq
and Afghanistan wars have experienced servicerelated injuries such as physical disabilities,
traumatic brain injury, and Post-Traumatic
Stress Disorder (PTSD). Veterans Administration
documents report over that over 500,000
American soldiers were injured in Iraq and
Afghanistan by the end of 2009. As many as one
in five American soldiers are coming home from
war zones with profound physical afflictions and
traumatic brain injuries, many of which require
24-hour attention.
Above and beyond
debilitating physical
injuries, a great
number of American
veterans will suffer
from emotional
disabilities that they
will bear for the rest
of their lives.
Spring 2012
Most of the physical
injuries suffered
from combat are
visible; however,
because PTSD falls
into the category
of a psychiatric
disorder, many
soldiers consider
this stigmatizing.
The symptoms
of PTSD include
frustration, extreme
anxiety, startle
responses to sudden
noises, panic attacks,
depression, social
withdrawal, selfisolation, nightmares
(or flashbacks of combat) and sleep deprivation.
Saint Francis Service Dogs can help. We provide
free, professionally trained service dogs to assist
wounded soldiers who have been honorably
discharged from the U.S. Armed Forces. A Saint
Francis Service Dog can contribute to physical and
occupational therapy and offer 24-hour emotional
support and companionship to a wounded soldier.
Saint Francis Service Dogs can assist veterans who
have experienced injuries by helping them with
physical tasks, allowing them to be more independent.
Service Dogs are taught a wide range of commands to
assist in the activities of daily living. They are trained
to open doors, turn lights switches on and off, help
the veteran undress, bring the telephone, retrieve the
remote control, carry bags, retrieve things from the
refrigerator, brace a soldier when he transfers from
the bed to a chair, and get help if the veteran falls.
Through the game of "tug, “ a service dog can help
soldiers as they
adapt and work
with their new
prosthetic limbs
as well as many
other remarkable
tasks that allow
the disabled
veteran to
function more
freely. At the
same time, their
round-the-clock
companionship
provides the
safety and peace
of mind that
comes from
knowing that the
dog can both
provide assistance
and seek help if
needed.
Service dogs
can also be
an efficient,
effective, and
holistic healthcare treatment for these men and women who have
served our country. Many veterans have not only
wounded bodies but wounded spirits, and service
dogs can help to treat both. This partnership facilitates
veterans' recovery from mental, emotional, or social
issues. A service dog can act as a bridge to the world
around a veteran, providing a positive focus for both
civilians and the veteran, steering attention away from
their disability.
The partnership generates a strong emotional bond
between human and dog. Through this bond, the veteran
often develops a positive focus and a stimulus to be active.
The result is increased motivation, higher self-esteem,
a greater sense of belonging, and a higher quality of life
that facilitates our veterans' recovery.
A service dog can allow
a veteran to cope with
daily civilian life on so
many levels. The presence
of a service dog relieves
feelings of isolation and
encourages social interaction. People are fascinated
by the work of a service
dog and want to know
more, so they ask
questions.
“He won’t let me
dwell on the agony
of being paralyzed.”
“She has rekindled
my desire and
passion for life.”
The companionship of a service dog eases the social
anxiety when the vet is in public because the conversation
is about the dog.
Another advantage to the partnership of a veteran with
PTSD and a service dog is that the presence of the dog
often distracts the veteran from focusing on his own
adversities and social apprehensions. Instead, they must
focus on their dog, its behavior, its safety, and its care.
We have observed our clients achieve major increases
in self-confidence, assertiveness and general mood
As the bond between a service dog and their partner
deepens, they become more and more in tune with one
another, and their ability to provide for one another's
needs increases. Some
of our partners have
said:
“She makes me
want to fight to
adapt and carry on
despite my disability.”
In working with the
trainer and the dog in
public, the veteran learns
how to answer questions
and deal with curious
people. This engages the
veteran and allows him to
become more comfortable dealing with strangers.
A calm, quiet, well-mannered service dog instills safety
and peace of mind if the veteran is awakened at night
by a nightmare or war flashback. The veteran will feel a
sense of relief when he realizes that his dog is perfectly
content.
improvement as they assume relationships with their
dog partners. Partnership with a service dog can enable
a veteran to function independently, go back to school
or work, and participate fully in their life, family and
community.
The demand for service
dogs to assist our
nation’s heroes who have been injured is a high priority for
Saint Francis. With your help, Saint Francis can honor our
nation’s heros while empowering them to move forward in
a positive direction.
It takes $25,000 to obtain, train, and place one service
dog. Saint Francis absorbs this cost and places them
with approved candidates without cost. Some of the
most valued qualities of a Veteran Service Dog are the
dedication, unconditional love and thoughtful attention
they give to the people whom they serve. Saint Francis
needs your help to provide professionally trained Veteran
Service Dogs to assist our nation’s wounded soldiers.
Please consider making a donation to this very special
program so that Saint Francis Service Dogs can touch
and improve the lives of our brave service men and
women who have faithfully served our country.
Please help us help them.
Thanks to Purina for supplying all of the food
and treats for The Saint Francis Puppy Program,
The Prison Pup Program, and The Training Program.
It all starts with a phone call or a few pieces of paper. That is our first introduction to the people that are interested in a
Saint Francis Service Dog. Members of the Saint Francis Screening Committee escort applicants down the path from that
first phone call or application to their first Candidate Class. This group works quietly in the background. Made up of incredibly diligent, professional volunteers, the Screening Committee vets each person that applies for a Saint Francis Service Dog.
The first contact many people have with Saint
Francis is with our Outreach Coordinators.
These volunteers are also partnered with a Saint
Francis Service Dog. Since they have been through
the process themselves, they are able to bring
their own understanding and experience to
support the potential new applicant. Outreach
Coordinator Sue Karr says, “I love sharing all the
wonderful ways a service dog can bring purpose
and independence to their lives, drawing from my
own experiences. Many people who call to inquire
about Saint Francis service dogs leave me with
awe as they share their stories. I’m inspired and
committed to help them obtain a service dog,
knowing how their lives will turn a corner.”
When Saint Francis receives an application,
an important sequence of events is triggered.
An interview is scheduled, as well as a home
visit. During the interview, the screener will
flesh out the information contained in the
Screening Committee from left to right: Sharon Custerapplication, explore the applicant’s needs and

help them to understand more about what life

with a service dog is like. Members of the
Screening Committee become intimately aware
of how a potential candidate lives, what their daily
lives entail, what struggles they face and how they cope. It is a position of great trust and responsibility. Confidentiality is
of utmost importance. All members of the Screening Committee sign confidentiality agreements and take the privacy of
each applicant very seriously.
Denise Rose, Director of Rehabilitation Services at Lewis-Gale Medical Center and a Screening Committee member, says,
“Being part of the Screening Committee for Saint Francis has given me the opportunity to see the real person behind the
patient label striving for independence in their home environment… For me, it is so striking how much a service dog can
not only help with those activities of daily living, but also with the emotional and social isolation many applicants feel.
I am blessed to see the how the Saint Francis team of staff and service dog enriches the lives of the disabled in our
community. I feel honored to be part of this wonderful team.”
After the application is reviewed, the interview conducted and the home visit concluded, the Screener writes up a report
that is circulated among the Committee. Before each Board of Directors meeting, the Screening Committee meets to
discuss each applicant and make a recommendation to the Board of Directors. Ultimately, the applications are accepted
or denied by the Board of Directors. The Screening Committee must be very thorough to ensure that the Board has the
information they need to make a good decision.
As Sharon Custer-Boggess says, “Forging a perfect match between dog and human partner starts from the very beginning,
with the application, and I love having a role in that process.” Fortunately for Saint Francis, the members of the Screening
Committee are exceptionally good at their jobs.
Lambeau is a yellow Laborador Retriver named by
his prison puppy raiser at Bland Correctional Center.
Daniel named him after the co-founder of the Green
Bay Packers and former player and coach, whom the
stadium is named after.
Lambeau is one of the puppies in the litter that was
bred and donated by Pam Hand and sponsored by
the Kroger Cares Program. Lambeau or one of his
lucky litter mates will be the 2013 Kroger Scholarship
Dog! Will Lambeau be the Kroger dog in 2013?
