Presort & ECRWSS U.S. POSTAGE PAID PERMIT NO. 4 Thief River Falls, MN 56701 Jim Strandlie by April Scheinoha Reporter The Thief River Falls City Council appointed Jim Strandlie to the vacant seat of council member at large Tuesday, March 1. Strandlie succeeds Ken Schmalz, who passed away unexpectedly Jan. 22. Strandlie will serve the remainder of Schmalz’s term, which is set to expire Dec. 31. Strandlie is retired from the education profession. Strandlie was one of six candidates for the position. Strandlie and Jeff Kolb, branch manager of Wells Fargo in Thief River Falls, were the finalists for the position. Other candidates included Anna Barth, an administrative assistant employed in Grand Forks, N.D.; Gail Boice, a retired technical writer at Arctic Cat; Max Kahlhamer, a flight instructor at the University of North Dakota; and Jerry Unruh, business owner. Another candidate was disqualified as the person didn’t provide a name and didn’t meet the requirements for the position. Council members interviewed the candidates Tuesday morning. By secret ballot, they ranked the candidates. After those results were tabulated, council members voted between Strandlie and Kolb via secret ballot. Strandlie was sworn into office at the council meeting that evening. At that time, he was also appointed to serve on the Public Works Committee and A d m i n i s t r a t i v e Services/Public Safety Committee. Council Member Josh Hagen was appointed to serve on the Personnel/Labor Committee. Schmalz had served on those committees. (Continued on Page 9) Finalists for TRF administrator to be interviewed by April Scheinoha Reporter The Thief River Falls City Council will interview the four finalists for the position of city administrator Saturday, March 12. The council set the interview schedule at its meeting Tuesday, March 1. Background checks were recently conducted on the four finalists: • Christine Anderson, Pennington County economic development director • Joseph “Yose” Haj, former Thief River Falls City Council member and current owner/operator of Trax Liquors in Dilworth • Kandis Hanson, former city manager of Mound • Rodney Otterness, city manager of Union Gap, Wash. He was a finalist in 2012 for the city administrator position here. Otterness is a former city administrator for International Falls. An hour has been set aside for an interview with each finalist. The finalists will also meet with department leaders available that day. It is hoped that the new city administrator will start in April or May. Depending upon negotiations with the hire, the city administrator will be paid $95,000 to $125,000. A total of 17 candidates applied for the position. The new city administrator will succeed Larry Kruse, who resigned Dec. 15 to accept a similar position in Willmar. ProDigi FIRST Robotics team heads to Duluth by Scott DCamp Reporter On Wednesday, members of ProDigi, the Thief River Falls FIRST Robotics team, departed for Duluth to compete in the Lake Superior Regional. The event, began with practice sessions Thursday and preliminary competition Friday, and concludes today. Team member Matt Johnson said the 20-person team has been working on its robot for the past six weeks. In January, ProDigi team members received a kit that included some mandatory components and four motors. The rest of the parts utilized in this year’s robot were purchased or donated by suppliers in town, including team sponsor Digi-Key. While part of the team was building the robot, another part was writing its programming. Team member Alexis Lane said this year’s robot has been programmed using C++, while previous robots used Java. Another team member, Kaitlynn Swick, is serving as the team’s social media coordinator. Swick said the team didn’t have much of a social media presence in years past, but this year’s team has a Facebook page (Team 3277 ProDigi), a Twitter feed (@ProDigit3277) and an Instagram page (#team3277). 2016 game This year, teams will compete in a game called FIRST STRONGHOLD. According to the official game reveal video, the goal of each threeteam alliance is to breech the opponent’s defenses, known as the outer works, weaken their tower with boulders and capture it.” The first line of defense, known as the outer works, can have over 10,000 configurations depending on which obstacles, known as defenses, are placed in which position. A level bar placed in position one is the only permanent defense, while the defense in position three changes periodically based on audience selection. The remaining three defenses of the outer works are chosen by the participating teams. Overall, there are eight defenses in four categories (Continued on Page 9) Notice: Change to affect TRF Rural Route 4 A change will affect when some readers receive their copies of the Northern Watch. The new options, created by the 2014 Farm Bill, provide greater coverage for losses when natural disasters affect eligible crops. The closing dates for 2016 NAP applications are as follows: Tuesday, March 15 – spring-seeded crops and pasture, and Sunday, May 1 – ornamental nursery. Previously, NAP offered coverage at 55 percent of the average market price for crop losses that exceed 50 percent of expected production. Producers can now choose higher levels of coverage, up to 65 percent of their expected production at 100 percent of the average market price. DON’T DUCK OUT ON YOUR COLONOSCOPY. We get it. Detours and Vacations A diversion, bypass, digression, deviation, shortcut, is a detour by another word. I suppose “vacation” could be another word. I’ve never given much thought to it, but I’ve always considered vacations necessary whereas detours a necessary evil. But really, it’s probably unwise to assign a feeling or mood to a word. It’s better to use words to describe moods and feelings. I didn’t encounter any detours on my journey to visit my parents and brother last week, but the warmer weather got me to thinking about spring and summer vacations. Of course, we stopped at some rest stops and I noticed that new brochures advertising great places to visit this spring and summer were on the racks inside. It’s not a bad time to start planning for summer vacations. At the Northern Watch and Thief River Falls Times, we’re in the process of preparing our Northern Highlights brochure, a news and advertising brochure that highlights area events and activities. I’d like to encourage those of you in charge of planning those activities to send us some basic information about your event. If you have a spare picture or two from last year’s event, it would be a great addition to the story or stories. While traveling across North Dakota and South Dakota, we also listened to the radio. Mention of Thief River Falls in one story caught my attention. The story was about individuals who decided to trek across North Dakota. The book is called “WAND” or Walk Across North Dakota and features the experiences and discoveries of Eric, Gwen, Jeremy, Richard and Tyler. Sorry, I can’t recall the last names, but during the interview, Gwen said she got ready for the hike by car- represent opinion of other staff members. Opinions in items from other publications may not coincide with the editor’s own views but are offered for their general interest. rying a backpack on hikes around Thief River Falls. It sounds like an interesting story. When we reached home, my mom, who has written several short novels, shared her latest project - a book about my parents’ travels. She’s using about 25 narratives about their travels for this project. It got me thinking about all their trips. They’ve been on too many for me to count. My parents’ love for travel is one of the things they share. Lately, Mom’s travels have been limited by Parkinson’s. Dad is, however, currently in the process of planning a pilgrimage across Spain. It’s called the Camino de Santiago or Way of St. James. It’s a 500-mile hike across northwestern Spain and an important Christian pilgrimage. Many take up the journey as a form of spiritual path or retreat for their spiritual growth, according to the research I’ve done on it. I only mention it because while listening to the radio program about the Walk Across North Dakota, the authors briefly mentioned the Camino de Santiago. It left me thinking that I was coming across way too many coincidences. Typically, many of us put off vacations thinking that we’re too busy or we’ll have time later. Research backs that up. Employees rarely use all the time allotted. According to the U.S. Travel Association, workers, on average, fail to use nearly five vacation days a year. I suspect the new vacation brochures in Minnesota are now out. That makes this a good time to start planning those summer vacations. In addition to the physical benefits of taking a break, I think we fail to remember that these trips or detours can provide us with a different perspective and understanding. Detours and vacations aren’t always bad. The Minnesota Office of Management and Budget has released the February Economic Forecast, revealing a projected surplus of $900 million for Fiscal Years 2016-17. While this is a decline from the November forecast by about $300 million, there is still significant money to focus on two important priorities this session: tax relief and transportation. First, you may recall last year, House Republicans advanced middle-class tax relief legislation that would benefit families, college students, small business owners, farmers, veterans and aging adults in our community. Putting more money back in your pocket with tax relief means families can save more and spend more in our economy, helping local businesses grow, thrive and hire. Tax relief is an important issue for folks, and since our state has collected too much from hardworking taxpayers, I will be advocating to return money to you. In addition to tax relief, fixing our roads and bridges is another priority this year. Last session, House Republicans put forth a $7 billion, 10-year transportation plan that will improve transportation infrastructure across the state — all without a harmful gas tax increase. In total, the Road and Bridge Act will help fix more than 15,000 lane miles and 320 bridges throughout Minnesota from Warroad to Worthington. Northwest Minnesota towns have a number of much-needed transportation improvement projects, and rural roads in our small communities are a priority in the Road and Bridge Act. In addition to the $12.5 million passed in 2015 for small city transportation funding, if our proposal becomes law, there will be more than $27.5 million a year in additional funding for the Small Cities Program. This money comes from dollars already collected by state government through a rental car tax and will fund repairs to roadways in cities with fewer than 5,000 people. For the communities in northwest Minnesota, that’s more than $1.2 million in the first year of implementation to fill potholes and fix local streets. We all know how harsh the winter weather can be in our part of the state, and this small city transportation funding is essential for the commuters, commerce and citizens who drive on our roads each and every day. Greater Minnesota priorities will continue to be well represented at the Capitol when the 2016 legislative session begins Tuesday, March 8. They include: • Two members appointed by the governor from among peace officers in Minnesota municipalities • One member appointed by the governor from the Minnesota State Patrol Association • One member appointed by the governor from among peace officers, or former peace officers, who are currently employed on a full-time basis in a professional peace officer education program “The board responsible for establishing standards and training protocols for Minnesota’s police officers must better reflect the diversity of our communities,” said Dayton. “For that reason, I have instructed my staff to actively seek out a more diverse set of candidates for the vacancies on this board. I encourage all Minnesotans, who have a desire to serve on this Board and who meet the specific eligibility requirements established by the Legislature, to submit their applications prior to the April 13 deadline.” To apply, submit an application, cover letter, and resume through the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website. Sherry LaCoursiere Pippin Here are some more recipes from the Sacred Heart School in East Grand Forks. I haven’t tried these rolls yet, but they certainly sound good. I bet other cake mix flavors would be good too: I can’t resist giving you the recipe for these rolls. I plan on making some for one of the “Cousins’ GetTogethers” we have been having. I think we are going to start calling those gettogethers “Weekly Eat Togethers!” CAKE MIX YEAST ROLLS Rose Ann Plutowski 3 packages dry yeast 1 cup warm water 1 tablespoon sugar 1/4 cup flour 1 (18 ounce) package yellow or orange cake mix 2 cups warm water 2-1/2 cups flour 1 teaspoon salt 2 cups flour 1/2 cups flour (additional) Soft butter In quart bowl, dissolve yeast in the warm water. Add 2 tablespoons sugar and 1/4 cup flour and stir well. Let stand until it bubbles. Pour mixture into mixer bowl and add cake mix, 2 cups warm water, 2-1/2 cups flour and salt. Mix for 5 minutes or until well blended. Stir in 2 cups additional flour by mixer or by hand. Turn out on floured board and knead, using another 1/2 cup flour, until smooth. Place in greased bowl, cover and let rise until double. Divide into 3 portions and roll out in long rectangle. Cover each with soft butter and cinnamon sugar mixture. Roll up from long end. Cut into 1-1/2 inch pieces and place in greased pans. Let rise and bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 18 minutes. Do not let rise more than double or texture will be too coarse. Glaze rolls with frosting made of 1/3 cup granulated sugar, 1/3 cup brown sugar, 2 teaspoons cinnamon. DHS licenses Northern Lights Bookstore & Beyond The Minnesota Department of Human Services has now issued the site license for Northern Lights Bookstore & Beyond in Thief River Falls. Employment opportunities for individuals with disabilities are now moving forward at that location. Falls Diverse Abilities Corporation acquired Northern Lights Bookstore from Sanford Health this past May. The store was then relocated to 1102 Main Ave. N. in Thief River Falls, and has been operating at its new address since June. The goal was to license the location as a second Day Training & Habilitation site for Falls DAC. Falls DAC provides training, employment and life enrichment programs for individuals with disabilities. Employment options exist both within Falls DAC’s facilities and at community job sites. Acquiring Northern Lights Bookstore, now called Northern Lights Bookstore & Beyond, has expanded employment options for individuals served. The business will provide jobs, including sales clerk positions, sorting/donation handling jobs, and cleaning jobs. This work experience will provide a stepping stone for some individuals to compete for other retail jobs. Northern Lights Bookstore & Beyond also provides a connection to the community. Donations of gently used books, clothing and household items create the store’s inventory, and shelves and racks are replenished as the items are sold. Jobs are created and maintained with this ongoing community support. The store is open Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Malwitz named to St. Cloud Tech president’s list Red Lake Falls resident Haylie Malwitz has been named to the St. Cloud Technical and Community College president’s list for fall semester 2015. Firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 1:40 a.m. Thursday and were on the scene for about half an hour. They are written by independent columnists and do not represent the opinion of the staff or management of The Times/Northern Watch. Change I think most want their town to be successful. I think success often comes with change or because of change. If you ask people whether they desire change, they will probably say yes. If you ask them if they are personally willing to change, the result might not be as positive. Here’s the thing, Thief River Falls was a little grim a few years ago. It needed some change. The strength of manufacturing, retail business and agriculture was there, but it wasn’t being exploited to the growth of Thief River Falls. These strengths can only be exploited through their effects on people. If these people do not live in the vicinity of Thief River Falls, they don’t pay taxes or purchase items. If they don’t live in the vicinity, then we lose their creative energy and drive to better the community. People need space to live. Drive around town and look at the new living spaces created in the last few years. Better yet, read the minutes of various government organizations and notice their support for construction of new living space. The spaces now exist, or will soon exist, for people who want to live near their work. Government planning has done well to prepare for this increase in population as evidenced by better infrastructure to deliver water and remove sewage. When I see more green, aboveground boxes next to empty lots, I know buildings and people will soon follow. More families increase student numbers and make all of that money spent on the school look a lot more like investment and a lot less like expense. OK, so people wanted their town to change and this change is happening. It is nowhere near complete and will need constant effort to maintain the momentum. I think now might be the time for people to change. I have often said that we are a town of BandAids. We think in term of the cheapest fix to any problem and would rather spend 75 cents on a BandAid instead of spending a buck on proper repair. If you constantly spend money on Band-Aids, it is just expense. When you do a proper repair or build new, then you are investing. We need to think more broadly and allow ourselves to remember that we may all live to enjoy these investments and our children certainly will enjoy them. If we only slap gauze and tape on our problems, we then doom the next generation to do the same. Trust me when I say I don’t believe in higher taxes. However, I have a sliding scale for taxes. This scale has always demonstrated that the farther your taxes travel, the less they do for you. Tax money spent at the municipal or county level changes your life. Think how nice it is to flush your toilet, flick on a light switch or see your roads clean after a snowfall. A few years ago, the Thief River Falls City Council decided to dip into its purse to pay for increased electric rates instead of passing the cost onto the end user. This did nothing but delay the pain and didn’t even garner these individuals another term in office as most were voted out. People don’t want more politics; they want honest representation. I think recent infrastructure purchases were not only brave; they created a fertile place for Thief River Falls to grow. It took advantage of existing economic strength and leveraged it to increase growth. It was a good change in how people think. Thief River Falls is changing and growing; we need to support this change in ways that might require a change in thinking. We’ve seen how change was healthy for our growth; now let us follow that example in how we think about the future and how we will prepare for that future. Marshall County Relay to hold kickoff Monday The American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Marshall County will hold a free kickoff for the annual event Monday, March 7 at 6 p.m. at the Hobo Haus in Newfolden. The host Prowlers led 3016 at the half and cruised to a 62-37 victory. “Real happy with our effort,” said Head Coach Jeff Loe. “We came out with great energy especially on defense. We shot well.” Thief River Falls harassed Sartell-St. Stephen into poor shooting effort. Tiahna Nicholson and Jenna Tadych combined to block eight shots. Overall, the Sabres shot just 22 percent from the floor, including a 10 of 48 effort in twopoint field goal attempts, and three of nine from behind the arc. Monday, Feb. 29. Anglers who purchased the new three-year individual angling license in 2013 when it first became available must renew their license this year. Anglers can help maintain and enhance Minnesota’s famed walleye fishing by adding the $5 walleye stamp validation to their licenses. The stamp is not required to fish for or keep walleye. Customers who purchase online via smartphone won’t receive a conventional paper license. Instead, they’ll receive a text message or email that serves as proof of a valid fish or game license to state conservation officers. A printed copy of the text or email also can serve as proof of a valid license. Ice shelter permits for 2015 remain effective through Saturday, April 30. P o o w !" !"#!"$!!%%"#&"$! Melgaard receives MnSTA honor Katherine Melgaard of Marshall County Central High School in Newfolden has been awarded the secondary Teacher of the Year Award by the Minnesota Science Teachers Association. The MnSTA Science Teaching Award, sponsored by Boston Scientific and 3M Corporation, is presented each year to teachers at two levels: elementary and secondary. Each awardee receives $1,000 for a project that benefits his or her students. Applicants must provide a description of their teaching practice, a listing of their teaching experiences and professional activities, a plan to share their work with others, and a proposal for use of the funds. Melgaard is a graduate of the University of Minnesota – Morris with a master’s degree in natural science and environmental education from Hamline University. Melgaard teaches grades 9-12 sciences in Newfolden, including Chemistry, Biology, Physical Science, Environmental Science, Anatomy & Physiology, Honors Physics, and Advanced Chemistry. She also works with the robotics, River Watch and Envirothon teams. In her application, Melgaard said, “My goal is to help students learn science. That means that they need to be able to understand what science is, how it works, and why it’s important. I use a lot of hands-on activities, try to incorporate as much inquiry opportunities and technology as possible, and get students thinking about science as a process, not just a body of knowledge.” Melgaard will use her award funds to purchase molecular model kits, so her chemistry students will have a tactile, 3D opportunity to build chemicals and see how the molecular structure changes in chemical reactions. (Continued from Page 1) Jim Strandlie Jim Strandlie has lived in the city of Thief River Falls since 2001. “I love this city,” he said. “I think this is a great place to live.” Strandlie was employed as a school principal for nearly 30 years. Later, he was employed as a parttime instructor at Northland College for 14 years and served twice as dean of academic affairs there. About why he decided to seek the appointment, Strandlie said he had no hidden agenda, no serious conflicts of interest and no bones to pick with the council. “I’m here to help if you need me,” he said. At the same time, Strandlie told council members that he doesn’t currently plan to run for the seat when it’s on the ballot in November. However, Strandlie noted that he doesn’t know what will happen by that time. Like the other candidates, Strandlie was asked about the city’s priorities moving forward. He listed priorities of hiring a city administrator, determining whether to host a junior hockey league, and securing more senior housing. With regard to the hockey franchise, Strandlie said he would like to find out more information and hear what the community thinks prior to making a decision. Council Member Steve Narverud, who lives near Strandlie, asked about his thoughts regarding a proposed Sherwood Avenue bridge. Narverud noted that some of their neighbors are opposed to the proposal. Strandlie replied that he would point out the advantages and find out why they are opposed. Jeff Kolb Jeff Kolb, a former Isanti City Council member, moved to Thief River Falls in January. He served on that city council for nearly four years. Kolb previously served on the Planning Commission and Economic Development Commission in Isanti. “I think it’s important for all of us to get involved in our communities,” he said. During his interview, Kolb said the city budget would be a priority. He noted there are ways to cut back in each department and ways to be more efficient. Kolb also encouraged the city to look into wind generation. He noted Isanti city leaders looked into that possibility, but wind speeds didn’t reach the required amount. Kolb was also asked about a proposed one-half percent sales tax. He said he would have to weigh his decision on how much is generated by the sales tax. Kolb noted a one-half percent sales tax wouldn’t affect a small business as much as it would affect a car dealership. Anna Barth Anna Barth moved to Thief River Falls six years ago after marrying a Thief River Falls native. During her interview, she referred to the need for additional housing in the city. She noted that need may be met with additional apartments or by bringing some older homes up to code. The mother of two also spoke about the need for additional daycare facilities in the city. She suggested that the city offer tax breaks or another incentive to those who start daycares in the city. Gail Boice Gail Boice moved to Thief River Falls from Red Lake Falls about two-and-a-half years ago. He served on the Red Lake Falls City Council for eight years in the late 1970s and early 1980s. During his interview, Boice noted the city should be focused on additional housing that is decent and affordable. He noted there is a shortage of homes valued between $150,000 and City Attorney Delray Sparby (left) swore in Jim Strandlie as a Thief River Falls City Council member at large on Tuesday, March 1. The council appointed Strandlie to the position vacated upon the unexpected passing of Ken Schmalz. $200,000 in the city. Boice indicated the council should be mindful of infrastructure needs, particularly how city growth may impact the water treatment system. Max Kahlhamer Like Boice, Max Kahlhamer moved to Thief River Falls about two-anda-half years ago. During his interview, he referred to the need for functioning streetlights. Kahlhamer said he had contacted the city regarding malfunctioning streetlights with no progress seemingly made. Kahlhamer, whose parents both served on a city council in central Minnesota, was also asked about Tax Increment Financing. He noted TIF delays the collection of additional taxes, but the positives outweigh the negatives. In particular, Kahlhamer referred to the increased number of people in Thief River Falls after a project has been built with TIF. Jerry Unruh Jerry Unruh has lived in Thief River Falls for 37 years. He noted that the city should obtain grants and work with contractors to offer affordable housing in the city. Council Member Don Sollom asked Unruh about expanding the city via annexation. He asked how Unruh would respond if half of the neighboring residents were in favor while the others were opposed. Unruh replied that he would speak to both sides and also see what the city’s priorities were in terms of annexation. If the city’s priorities overrode the opposition’s dissent, he said he would try to convince the opposition of the need to annex the property into the city. Council Member Josh Hagen asked Unruh why the council should appoint him to the seat. He noted that Unruh has run for governmental office seven times. Unruh replied that he put himself out there. Once, he said, he only lost by two percentage points. Recalling that election, Unruh said 49 percent of the voters wanted him to represent them, so he decided to apply for this position. ProDigi team travels to Duluth/Continued (Continued from Page 1) Overall, there are eight defenses in four categories available for teams: Category A - cheval de frise or portcullis; Category B moat or ramparts; Category C - drawbridge or sally port; Category D - rock wall or rough terrain. Robots begin the competition in the neutral zone, and each team begins the competition with one robot each. Additional boulders are placed on the midline and in each castle. Each alliance may also assign one spybot to start the game in the opponent’s courtyard, with a human player to occupy the spy station to signal intelligence about activities on the far side of the field. The first 15 seconds of the match are autonomous, which means that the robots will rely on computer programming rather than human control. The robots earn points by reaching their opponent’s outer works, crossing defenses (10 points) and scoring goals worth five at the bottom of the tower or 10 points at the top of the tower. Next is a two-minute, 15second period where the robots are human-operated. Goals values are reduced to two and five points. The first time a robot fully crosses a defense (worth five points), some of the base lights will turn off. On the second crossing, all lights turn off, indicating that defense is considered damaged. Once any four of the five defenses are damaged, the outer works are considered breached and the alliance receives points. In qualification rounds, the alliance receives 1 ranking point each time it breaches the opponent outer works. In playoff rounds, the alliance receives 20 points. Each alliance may have only one robot for defense at a time in its own courtyard. The tower loses strength with each boulder that scores. If enough boulders score, the opponent’s flag will drop, indicating that the tower has been weakened and can be captured. On Thursday, March 3, the team practiced on the 54-foot, one-inch by 26-foot, 7-inch field. Competition Thursday’s practice sessions gave the team its first opportunity to see its robot in action and fine-tune things for official competition. Competition in the Lake Superior Regional officially began Friday, with six qualification matches scheduled for Friday and two more scheduled for Saturday morning. Of the 60 teams competing, the top eight will move on to playoff competition Saturday afternoon. Each playoff team will choose two non-qualifying teams to complete its alliance for the playoffs. The evening’s events featured discount tickets for all tribal members, including a food voucher. Upon entering the Sanford Center lobby, one was immediately immersed in a festive atmosphere with hand drumming by the Kingbird Singers. Inside the arena, bright lights punctuated by an occasional light show and thundering rock music added to the mirthful mood. At about 7:25 p.m., a green carpet (BSU colors) was rolled out to the center of the rink. The bright lights dimmed. A spotlight shown at center ice. What seemed like fireworks and smoke poured from the edge of the ice. The BSU Beavers were entering the rink followed by their opponents. As the announcer introduced the players, each skated to their respective blue lines near center ice. The lights now up, the carpet again unfurled, a singer sang the national anthem. Now walking down the carpet were Red Lake Treasurer Annette Johnson and Leech Lake Chairwoman Carri Jones. The two tribal leaders waved to the crowd as the announcer first introduced Jones and then Johnson. The announcer explained that the leaders of the American Indian nations would participate in a ceremonial puck drop. The captains of each team skated to center ice and took a face-off position. Then Jones and Johnson, each having been given a commemorative hockey puck, dropped them simultaneously to the ice. The icemen gathered the pucks quickly and returned them to their former holders as souvenirs. After the tribal leaders exited the arena, the carpet was rolled up and the game began, a game that BSU was destined to win 6-2 in what was the home finale. “2013 was the inaugural year that BSU and Sanford center honored American Indians of the area,” said Cyrus Pansch, director of marketing and sales at the Sanford Center. “We were privileged that tribal leaders participate in the ceremonial puck drop each year. It's our way of trying to bring people together and highlight the unique diver- sity and contributions that Minnesota's three largest reservations bring to the Bemidji area." In addition, the Sanford Center and BSU demonstrate their welcome for the area’s tribal peoples continuously by participating in Bemidji’s Ojibwe Language Project. Each entrance/exit to the event center is posted with the words Boozhoo/Welcome and Miigwech/Thank You on each door. All restrooms in the building have signage in Ojibwe and English as well – Ininiwag/Men and Ikwewag/Women. Perhaps the most visible evidence of Sanford Center's participation in the Ojibwe Language Project, is the parking lot poles. In order to help event-goers locate their car at the end of a Sanford happening, each light pole is graced high, with an image of an animal and its name in both Ojibwemowin and English. The event was sponsored by Leech Lake Gaming and BSU. Sanford Center is owned by the city of Bemidji, which posts both Ojibwe and English signage at all city-owned public buildings.
