2 - Library News
A Message from the Executive Director
Summer Reading Club has long been one
of the most significant and vital programs
the Dayton Metro Library offers. Each year,
thousands of children and teens keep track
of their reading and earn incentives along the
way. Not only are they having fun, they’re also
keeping their minds active and engaged. It’s
been shown that students who don’t continue
reading and learning during the summer can
lose approximately 2 months of grade level
equivalency by the fall. The Library helps
prevent this “summer slide.”
This year, we’re expanding the traditional
Summer Reading Club into the SUMMER
CHALLENGE. This change reflects our broader
goals of helping youth succeed, being a center
for lifelong learning, and playing an increasingly
significant role as a resource and partner in our
community.
The SUMMER CHALLENGE is about more
than reading - it’s about innovative, hands-on
activities, educational programs and experiences
families can enjoy together. Our dedicated
staff has coordinated a full slate of entertaining
and educational programs including STEM
activities, interaction with local first responders,
art, literature and history programs. And now,
attending these great programs counts toward
reaching goals in the SUMMER CHALLENGE.
I hope you’ll visit your Library to find out more
about the SUMMER CHALLENGE and join us
for the fun!
Our facilities improvement projects are well
underway, with active construction taking
place at our Miami Township, Northwest and
Main Library buildings. The Main Library moves
to its temporary location at 120 S. Patterson
Boulevard this summer. Current projections
estimate completion of the Main Library’s major
renovation and expansion by fall, 2016.
Plans continue to develop for our other
Libraries, with Kettering-Moraine being the
next facility to undergo significant renovation
starting in September. We’ve received helpful
input at community forums held in Vandalia,
Brookville, New Lebanon and Miamisburg, where
architects and designers met with residents,
communicated ideas and heard suggestions.
Each of these Libraries will reflect the unique
character of its community while featuring other
improvements identified in the Libraries for a
Smarter Future plan.
Stay up-to-date with the Libraries for a
Smarter Future project
by clicking “Facilities
Plan” on our homepage at
DaytonMetroLibrary.org.
Best wishes for a safe
and happy summer,
Tim Kambitsch

Your Critical Thinking Skills
with Finch Robots and Maker Kits!
There’s a robot invasion at the Library!
Awesome little robots that look a bit like
birds on wheels (finches to be exact) will
zoom around our Libraries this summer as
teens and tweens practice coding and other
computer science skills.
BirdBrain Technologies made a limited
number of Finch robots available for public
libraries to borrow. The Dayton Metro Library
was awarded 40 of them for use through
2015. The Finch features temperature,
light and obstacle sensors. Programmable
outputs include sound, movement and light,
and there are methods to generate speech
from text, play sound files, use attached web
cams and more – the sky’s the limit!
In addition, Maker Kits will offer other
creative experiences for teens and tweens
as well as tinkerers of all ages. Each
STEM programs in blue
themed kit contains
the tools and materials to support
hands-on experimentation in areas such
as kitchen science, circuits, the science
of sound and textiles. Thanks to the
support of Time Warner Cable and
Connect A Million Minds, Maker
Kits will begin traveling among
our Libraries this summer.
The Finch robot and Maker Kit
schedules are being finalized
now. Be sure to check with
your Library or our website

what’s coming to
