The Hill Country Arts
Council is gearing up for
two afternoons and evenings of creativity for
kids. They’ve partnered
with the Public Library to
provide a station where
kids can write letters to
Santa. They’ve teamed
with The Flower Shoppe
and the YMCA to provide crafts and games at
Main Plaza. Kids can
learn how to make ornaments and garlands that
mirror those made by
children during the Victorian era that they can
take home and remember
the amazing time they
had at Dickens on Main
this year.

you see the carolers fill-
ing the air with traditional Christmas songs, hear
the words of A Christmas Carol in Dickens

Hunting & Gathering Offers Variety of Giclee Prints
The large prints on canvas
that we have in Hunting and
Gathering are usually not
hand-painted but created by
a process called Giclee (zhee
–klay) This is a printing
process that uses faderesistant, archival inks to
accurately reproduce the
original artwork. This printing is done on heavy cotton
canvas and is then textured
in several different ways to
create the look of a handpainted oil or acrylic. One of
our favorite finishes is a
crackle which looks very
much like the aging of a very
old oil painting. We are able
to special order giclee prints in
a huge range of topics. There
are beautiful animal subjects
and the one shown here is just
one of many fabulous abstracts. Check with us if you

HCM honored with 2014 Baldrige National Quality Award
On Nov. 10, the U.S.
Department of Commerce announced that
Hill Country Memorial is one of four recipients of the
2014 Malcolm Baldrige National
Quality Award, the nation’s highest
honor for performance excellence
through innovation, improvement
and visionary leadership in both
public and private organizations.
Twenty-two organizations competed
for the award in one of six categories: manufacturing, service, small
business, health care, education and
nonprofit, including government
agencies.
“We are indebted to our community,
supporters, physicians, volunteers
and every single staff member for
this remarkable accomplishment,”
said Jayne Pope, Hill Country Memorial CEO. “We embarked on this
journey several years ago, and to be
recognized with a Baldrige Award
signifies our continued commitment
to improving and providing excellent service in all we do.”
The 2014 Baldrige Award recipients
were evaluated by an independent
board of examiners in seven areas
defined by the Baldrige criteria:
leadership; strategic planning; customer focus; measurement, analysis
and knowledge management; workforce focus; operations focus; and
results.
The Baldrige Award is the latest in a
series of accolades for HCM. Truven
Health Analytics has named HCM
one of the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® for the past three years, and

Electrolab Building New State-of-the-Art Facility in Boerne
On May 27, 2014, Electrolab’s
owners and associates officially
broke ground on their new corporate headquarters, which includes a state of the art engineering and manufacturing facility, at 159 Enterprise Parkway,
Boerne, Texas. Electrolab’s current headquarters are located in
San Antonio with a sales office
in The Woodlands, Texas. The
new headquarters will be approximately 25 miles north of
the current facility. The company will continue to maintain a
sales office in The Woodlands,
Texas.
A privately-owned corporation
founded in 1976, Electrolab has
grown over the past 38 years
into a leading innovator in the
engineering and manufacture of
sensors and controllers for the
oil and gas, water management,
and industrial control industries.
The company currently employs
40 associates and is expecting
significant growth in the future.
This facility positions Electrolab
to ramp up production for its
current products, as well as several new products to be introduced in the near future. Electrolab’s current workforce includes electrical, mechanical and
specialty engineers; professional
positions; and skilled production
employees. “Even with more
efficient, streamlined processes
and our hard-working dedicated
workforce, we are bursting at
the seams of our current facility.

our new building, which will

ing initial expectations and

equipped when students
come to class in January.

31,000square foot facility, where
they will continue to produce
their own printed circuit boards
and high-temperature electronics
in-house, using state of the art
equipment. The company is
employing local professionals in
the design and construction of

offices in Boerne, is the general
contractor. “We’ve put together
a great team to lead the building
process and know the facility
will be one our employees and
the Boerne community will take

This month we celebrate
together a most treasured

….Thanksgiving. It is a time
to give thanks for the blessings in our life with friends
and family.
Effective leaders know that
they need to practice the
spirit of Thanksgiving
throughout the year. The
fifth practice of the Leadership Challenge teaches us to
“Encourage the Heart”. By
focusing on the positive contributions that individuals
and teams make for the organization we can reinforce
the behaviors that bring success.
It sounds easy, but actually
it is quite hard. You have to
pay attention to the details
and make sure that you really know what is going on.
Recognition can be risky and
can actually be harmful if
not done properly.
My strategy has been to get
as many people involved as
possible. I use my team to
keep me informed and investigate the good deeds to
confirm what really happened and who was involved. We also created an
employee driven recognition
team that develops new ideas for showing appreciation.
The most successful has
been a “peer to peer” process
that allows anyone to publicly say thanks to another
team member.
Finally, be sure to use the
occasion to publicly tie the
recognition to a specific
shared value. It may be related to safety, quality,
teamwork, etc. By helping
others make the connection,
you are reinforcing your
commitment to the groups
shared values.
So during this holiday season
take time to encourage your
team by saying “thanks” and
then keep the practice going
with small, simple recognition activities.

Do I really need a will?
Ever one needs a final will to
protect estate value and ease
troubles for survivors.
With a will, the executor
obtains Letters of Testamentary, essentially a power of
attorney to take actions to
wind down the estate with
no judicial oversight. The
executor collects assets,
compiles claims, pays debts
& expenses, distributes
property under the Will and
files only a simple inventory
and list of claims.
Without a will, the executor
has to hire a lawyer to draft
motions, set hearings, present evidence, obtain rulings, draft orders, and then
acts to wind down the estate
while reporting in detail to
the court.
This increases costs, depletes value to beneficiaries,
slows the process, and frustrates families.
