The council provides access to post-secondary education and technical training by arranging for existing providers to offer the instruction, which is designed to meet the specific workforce and economic development needs of the region served. Lance Hummer, the director of the Keystone council, opened the graduation ceremonies by noting that the effort to bring community college classes to the region began more than a year and a half ago. Venango Area Chamber of Commerce ● (814) 676-8521 ● www.venangochamber.org 5 Victory for Pennsylvania Businesses Tolling of I-80 rejected “It's a tremendous victory for rural Pennsylvania. We are very excited about this decision." That was the reaction of State Rep. Michele Brooks, RMercer Co., following news that for the third time since 2007, federal highway officials have rejected Pennsylvania's request to make I-80 a toll road. 716 East Second St, Oil City, PA 16301 Phone: (814) 677-4005 Website: www.fscas.org Adoption Services Alternatives to Violence Big Brothers Big Sisters Drug & Alcohol Programs Home & Community Habilitation Supervised Visitation Family Foundations Program General Counseling The HEIGHTS Program Oil City P.R.E.P. Program PPC Violence Free Network & Shelter Venango Fatherhood Initiative Giving strength to families since 1887 The Venango Area Chamber of Commerce joined Chambers across the state of Pennsylvania in taking a stand against the tolling of Interstate 80, in line with our mission to promote business; the chamber will support business friendly legislation and oppose legislation that is detrimental to business. The Board of Directors applauds the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) for the recent decision to reject the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s application to toll I-80, upholding federal law. A recent study prepared by Dr. Tracy Miller of Grove City College entitled “The Economic Impact of Tolling I-80” shows how tolls would negatively affect many businesses and workers living in the Interstate 80 corridor. The study states that approximately 75,000 people work for an employer that depends on I-80 for shipping inputs, shipping outputs, or as an important source of customers. Several industries have an important presence along I-80 and would bear substantial costs if tolls were implemented. Many of these businesses are located here in Venango County. Those who hold memberships with the Venango Chamber have expressed their relief that they will not be burdened by the stress, heavy fees, and logistical issues that a toll on I-80 would surely bring to their business. Even as we praise the decision not to toll I-80, we acknowledge that Pennsylvania faces a significant challenge in finding money to fix aging roads and bridges. This Chamber will work with our members to be proactive in this continued discussion and represent the needs of those that call Venango County home. We acknowledge the work of our local legislators in representing the best interests of our members and our community in this matter. We encourage our members to write to our local decision makers and express their appreciation for their efforts to oppose and defeat the tolling of I-80. Hovis, LUTCF Agent Since introducing this program 15 months ago, Hagan has diverted over 4,433 pounds of weight from being dumped in landfills or incinerated. Millions of inkjet and laser printer cartridges are used in the United States each year, with approximately 95% of used cartridges going to landfill. Highly resistant to degradation, the plastic and metal components of cartridges in a landfill site can last for as long as 1000 years. In a one year period, if the world’s discarded cartridges were stacked end-to-end, they would circle the earth over three times. Hagan has partnered with Close the Loop Inc., a company that is leading the world in this specialized field of resource recovery and reuse. They have developed a process that takes cartridges, breaks them up, separates and recovers the metallic component materials and then blends and reprocesses the various mixed plastics remaining on site. “While everyone is talking green, at Hagan we’re investing in programs that help both our business and yours to better reduce, reuse and recycle,” said Jay Verno, president of Hagan Business Machines. “E-cycling diverts waste from landfills, ensuring minimal negative impact on the environment and helps to reduce waste of valuable resources.” 857 Allegheny Boulevard, P.O. Lydia's Stitches recently opened at the Cranberry Mall, offering an array of services sewing and alterations. Sue Wren has been sewing since she was 11 years old and business partner Eve Martino has worked as a seamstress for over 40 years. Both have gained a reputation with long term customers for their attention to detail. As you enter the Lydia's Stitches you will see all the tools of the trade needed to complete alterations, men's and women's tailoring and custom clothing construction, including vestments for members of the clergy. The new store includes two sewing areas, two dressing rooms and a large private fitting area. Customers may drop in during regular business hours, Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10-5 and Tuesday, Thursday 10-7 or call to schedule appointments. Sue explains that while alteration and tailoring are affordable choices for making attire look its best, She and Eve must actually see each item to provide a firm quote on any cost of work. Among the most common inquiries of them are “ you replace coat zippers?” and “do you sew leather?” The answer to both is an enthusiastic yes. In addition to seamstress work, Lydia's Stitches offers Tuxedo rentals, each with a complete, out the door price. The packages come in three tiers all that include the suit, shirt, vest, shoes, damage waiver and sales tax. Alterations done by Sue and Eve include simple hems and more involved tailoring to prom and bridal gown alterations. Sue remarks, “Well tailored business clothing can make an important first impression during a job interview or first meeting. We have extensive experience and well honed skills to ensure proper fitting of all items we alter.” You will want to allow for adequate time for any work that you take to Lydia's Stitches as they have already established a steady business. This is attributed to an ideal location, at the mall and the return of customers who have used Sue and Eve's services in the past. Join the Chamber in celebrating the grand opening of Lydia's Stitches with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, May 11th. Sue and Eve plan to offer specials throughout the Grand Opening week. You can reach Lydia's Stitches by phone at 814-676-4727 or email [email protected].
