In the Oil Region
Employers in our region are facing unprecedented levels of competition in attracting the best employees. While
this presents a challenge to the business community, it also provides an opportunity to local students who will
make up the future workforce. In response to this workforce issue, several local organizations have teamed up as
School Counts! In the Oil Region partners to work with our education community in encouraging increased
student accountability that will bridge student education and workforce development. Those organizations who
are working together include: Forest County Community & Economic Development, Forest County Industrial
Development Corporation, Franklin Area Chamber of Commerce, Oil Region Alliance of Business, Industry and
Tourism, Titusville Chamber of Commerce, Titusville Community Development Agencies, Venango Area
Chamber Of Commerce and the PA CareerLink Oil Region.
School Counts! In the Oil Region offers ‘employability certificates’ to participating students in grades 9-12, who
have met the six academic and performance criteria that have been established. The certificates give credibility
to students and indicate that they are dependable and ready to go to work.
School Counts! In the Oil Region began with a pilot program at the Cranberry Area School District in the spring
of 2013. The remaining Oil Region school districts have committed to rolling this program out, beginning in the
fall of 2013.
Local businesses who value the standards of these certificates are invited to sign up in support of the program.
Even if your business does not employ high school students, we encourage your business to show your support
of the School Counts! In the Oil Region initiative. Those who do employ students are encouraged to
acknowledge the certificates when hiring. All businesses can champion the importance of building a strong
work ethic in school, as it will directly affect future employment beyond high school.
For more information about School Counts! In the Oil Region please contact any of the School Counts! In the
Oil Region partners.

Seneca Lanes “Where the Good Times Roll”
This year Seneca Lanes begins their second bowling season under new ownership by the
Plaza Sports Den, Inc. Last season, bowlers saw many changes that included new air conditioning, parking lot repair, signage repair, fresh paint, and new ball returns. League bowlers enjoyed new events with full to capacity bowling tournaments, FREE Open and FREE
League bowling to the winners of the 38th annual League Appreciation Tournament, and
over $2500 in Roll in Rebates to their league bowlers for recruiting new league bowlers,
awarded by Dean and Stephanie Felmlee.
There were a few additional highlights of last year, too! Professional Bowler Rhino Paige attended a High School
Bowling match and provided some bowling tips to high school bowlers from Franklin, Oil City, and Cranberry
High School during a practice session. Also, Ebonite International sent two regional Professional Bowlers to
Seneca Lanes to assist local bowlers with instruction and gave the bowlers a chance to roll newly released
bowling balls during the Ebonite Demo Days, which is scheduled for this season on Saturday, February 22, 2014.
The staff at Seneca Lanes enjoyed introducing the #1 participating sport in the United States to the community
with new events like Penny a Pin and Monte Carlo on Friday nights. Families took to the lanes with events that
make it economical to have a night out and dinner with your family for $30 during Family Time Combo. Bowling
is great for all ages and abilities, and it creates memories for the whole family.
Group outings, fundraisers and birthday parties connect the staff with the community. Seneca Lanes can host
parties as small as a group of 8 or as large as functions with an excess of 100 people. Events can be customized
to fit your needs.
During the last few months, Seneca Lanes has gotten a new appearance with
a fresh look outside and a new sign from Ultra Graph-X. Four Your Car Connection has also been inviting bowlers to experience all the changes coming
this season. League bowlers will be returning next month and two new formats are being introduced to invite new bowlers—8 for 8 and Bad Bowlers. 8
for 8 is targeted to youth 13 yr and younger, in which they can bowl for 8
weeks at $8 a week and get a FREE bowling ball! The Bad Bowlers is an adult
two person team mini league, with a main goal of having FUN. Prizes, music
and everyone receives a t-shirt to wear proudly that they are a Bad Bowler at Seneca Lanes.
Keep up to date with events on the website, www.senecalanes.com, or friend the Seneca Lanes Facebook page.
Also, competitive bowlers are invited to join the Bowling Blast Facebook group to stay on top of tournaments in
a tri-state area. Experience the fun and join the party at Seneca Lanes, “where the good times roll”.

Governor Corbett Invites Small Businesses to Apply
for DEP’s Energy Efficiency, Pollution Prevention Grants
Governor Tom Corbett recently encouraged Pennsylvania smallbusiness owners to apply for DEP’s Small Business Advantage Grant to
finance pollution prevention and energy efficiency projects.
Businesses can apply for 50 percent matching funds of up to $9,500 to
adopt or acquire energy-efficient or pollution-prevention equipment or procedures. “Supporting projects that
promote energy efficiency, especially in small businesses, will help keep Pennsylvania on the path to energy
independence,” Corbett said.
Applicants must be a for-profit corporation, limited liability corporation, partnership, sole proprietorship or
other legal entity with 100 or fewer full-time employees. The grant-supported project must be located in
Pennsylvania, be owned by the applicant and save the business at least 25 percent plus $500 in annual energy
consumption or in pollution handling or prevention related expenses.
Applicants may be manufacturers, retailers, service providers, mining operators or agricultural businesses.
Eligible projects include HVAC and boiler upgrades, high-efficiency lighting, solvent recovery systems, waste
recycling systems, and auxiliary power units deployed as anti-idling technology for trucks.
The application deadline is Sept. 6. Eligible applications will be approved on a first-come, first-served basis
from July 8 through Sept. 6 or until funds are exhausted, whichever comes first. Funding is eligible for those
costs incurred between July 8, 2013 and June 30, 2014.
Applications must be mailed to the Department of Environmental Protection’s Grant Center,
P.O. Box 8776, Harrisburg, PA 17105-8776 or hand delivered to DEP’s Grant Center, 15th Floor,
Rachel Carson State Office Building, 400 Market St., Harrisburg, PA 17101-2301. Faxes or electronic submissions will not be accepted. For more information and to view the application package, instructions and application form, visit www.dep.state.pa.us and click on the “Small Business Advantage Grant” button. To contact the Small Business Ombudsman’s Office, call (717) 772-8909 or

The Power of Doubt and Excuses
So, now that we are on the back half of 2013 and are crawling through this hot, hot heat, I am sure you have made
it out to at least one Venango Chamber event. At that event, did you have a great time meeting new people, putting a face to the voice you hear over the phone at work, or even reconnecting with an old friend? If you were like
me at my first “networking event” you probably brought someone along with you so you would know at least one
person there, posted up somewhere, and quickly mapped your escape route.
If you find yourself laughing along and empathizing with me because you have been there, or are there now, I have
some great ideas to pass along to you. These ideas come from Josh Linkner: a master at creative thinking for business. Check them out and if they seem interesting, be sure to read the full article on his blog. I have included the
link below.


“Others will laugh. I don’t want to be judged”
“It’s too risky; I’ll probably fail”
“It isn’t worth the effort”
“I’m just too busy”
“If I stumble, I can’t handle the setbacks”
“I’m too___________”
Those are some pretty powerful phrases that will strike doubt in to your mind. Change your mind set from that of
a doubter, to that of a doer. Make some change, shake the branches, and you might be surprised at what falls
from the tree. Be sure to check out Josh’s full article here: http://tinyurl.com/kedtd9e

The Barrow Books Hunter Cook and Billy “Crash” Craddock
The 2013 Rock’n Labor Day Weekend at the Barrow-Civic Theatre in Franklin, PA is sure to be an event that can’t be missed,
with energetic performances by up-and-coming country singer Hunter Cook on August 30th and country legend Billy
“Crash” Craddock on August 31st!
Hunter Cook took the community by surprise shortly after realizing that he enjoyed singing
when he began entering contests such as the 4-H Talent Competition and Franklin’s “Taste of
Talent” and winning first place awards. With his newfound confidence, he travelled to Nashville to win first place at the ICM (Inspirational Country Music) Awards and gain national recognition as a new artist to keep an eye out for. He has recently finished his first album, and his
single “Pray” is quickly climbing the country charts.
For the second night of our Rock’n Labor Day Weekend, we will be featuring Mr. Country Rock
himself, Billy “Crash” Craddock, on August 31st at 7:30! Crash is a country phenomenon, with 17 Top
Ten singles and 9 singles that reached #1 on the country charts, including “Rub It In,” “Broken Down
in Tiny Pieces,” and “Ruby Baby.”
Tickets to both of these shows can be purchased by calling our Box Office at (800) 537-7769 or (814)
437-3440, or by visiting our website, www.barrowtheatre.com. The Barrow-Civic Theatre is located at

Colleen Stuart of The Venango Training & Development Center, INC. Named to
Board of Newly Formed State Association
Colleen Stuart, C.E.O. of Venango Training & Development Center, Inc., has been
named to serve on the board of directors of the Rehabilitation and Community
Providers Association (RCPA), a new association that will be among the largest
state health and human services trade groups in the nation. RCPA was created by
a merger between the Pennsylvania Association of Rehabilitation Facilities (PARF)
and the Pennsylvania Community Providers Association (PCPA). Members of the
two organizations met separately and voted unanimously to approve the merger,
which takes effect July 1st. The two associations, which share a long history of
cooperation and partnerships, began exploring the merger in 2009.
As a single entity, RCPA will continue the associations’ joint missions to enhance advocacy and education,
project support, public information and policy development for the benefit of individuals with mental health
and intellectual disabilities, addictive diseases and rehabilitation needs, and expand networking and training
for association members.
Founded in 1972, PCPA is a statewide association that promotes a community-based, responsive and viable
system of agencies, providing quality services for individuals receiving mental health, intellectual disability,
addictive disease and other related human services. PCPA represents more than 225 community-based
agencies that provide mental health, intellectual and developmental disability, and substance use disorder
services for children and adults. Members operate in all 67 counties and serve more than 1 million
Pennsylvanians per year.

Welcome to Membership: Kirby Neubert of North Country Creations
This month we would like to welcome Kirby Neubert and his business North Country Creations to membership in the
Chamber! North Country Creations is Kirby’s wood-carving business that, in his words, “captures the beauty of
America’s wildlife in wood in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and functional.” Kirby does heirloom quality
woodcarving work that is hand-carved, hand-painted, and unique for each customer. His “functional art” takes form as
curio cabinets, bookcases, desks, mirrors, murals, beds, coffee and end tables, plaques, clocks, and more! He also
carves scenes into rifle, shotgun, and handgun stocks. He creates taxidermy display products for taxidermists, e.g. habitat bases and panels, and garden ornaments for the home or business landscape.
Kirby was apprenticed in the art of power carving with Dremel tools and rotary
grinders and has been a professional woodcarver since 1992. He is an
accomplished woodcarver with commissions from the National Rifle Association,
Safari Club International, National Wild Turkey Federation, Ruffed Grouse Society,
Ducks Unlimited, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission. His work is displayed in
at least 17 states and as far away as Peru! Kirby is a native of Western
Pennsylvania and is very involved in the outdoors community here. Kirby is active
in the Friends of Oil Creek State Park and serves as a Hunter/Trapper Education
teacher as well.
Kirby is also an accomplished outdoor photographer and specializes in wildlife, plants, and landscapes. To learn more
and see more of Kirby’s beautiful functional art visit his website at www.northcountrycreations.com. You can also contact him at (814) 677-4633 or [email protected]. Please join us in welcoming Kirby to membership!

SCORE Counseling – is it for you ?
We’ve completed our introduction to SCORE in the last several
months by covering the background of SCORE, the services we
provide, the interaction with other organizations, and last
month we introduced Trail Towns and how SCORE can help
them to develop.
I briefly mentioned that a Business Plan Contest would kick off on May 15 th, with the objective of encouraging the development of new businesses that would complement the trails that are being completed in our
area. As part of the contest, 2 additional informational meetings are being held to help the participants in
the contest successfully develop business plans. Our SCORE Chapter has offered to help the participants with
free business advice at the end of the contest to help them become successful.
This brings me to the topic of this month – SCORE Counseling. There appears to be almost 20 new businesses
that are interested in the contest, which is a great thing! However, this creates a challenge for our SCORE
resources – we need more people to help with the mentoring that will be required in the fall as the contest
winds down.
Should you be a Counselor ?
SCORE provides a great service to people interested in starting or growing their small business and the SCORE
Counselors are critical in making that happen. The SCORE counselors offer the vast business and life
experience they have to the clients we serve. None are paid to do this. All are interested in giving back
some of their knowledge to the next generation of business people and that’s what motivates us. While you
can volunteer your time in many ways, we know it can be a very rewarding experience when you become a
SCORE Counselor! You not only help the people you serve, but you constantly learn new things and get to
interface with other counselors who are both interesting and also very giving of their time and talents.
Do you have what it takes ?
SCORE Counselors come from all areas of business – private companies, large corporations, non-profits, and
government professions. They represent all different business professions from accounting to marketing,
from sales to engineering, human resources to law. You can be a generalist or specialist – all can contribute
in a meaningful way because we have over 13,000 counselors nationwide to support us in the event we do
not have the all the skills we need to help a client in a specific area.
If you have knowledge in any area of business, you can help. You just need to have the desire to help others,
and a willingness to share your knowledge.
How do I find out more ?
