POPE FRANCIS Quote of the Week:
JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY
Dec. 8, 2015 – Nov. 20, 2016
Mercy: the word reveals the very mystery of
the Most Holy Trinity. Mercy: the ultimate
and supreme act by God come to meet us.
Mercy: the fundamental law that dwells in
the heart of every person who looks
sincerely into the eyes of his brothers and
sisters on the path of life. Mercy: the bridge
that connects God and man, opening our
hearts to the hope of being loved forever
despite our sinfulness. (S2 )

Parish Events & News...
One Day Only: Saturday, May 28, 2016
8:15am Mass, 4:15pm Confessions, & 8:00pm Confessions; ALL CANCELED
We deeply regret the inconvenience it causes. We hope you will understand and forgive us.
On Saturday, May 28th we are pleased and honored to celebrate two Confirma on Masses. We will confirm our teens
at a special Mass scheduled for 10:00am and then later, at the regular 5:30pm Mass we will confirm our adults. We
are delighted to welcome Bishop Alex Salazar for the celebra on of both Confirma on Masses.
Because there is a great deal of work to be done to set up and prepare the church and sanctuary in prepara on for
each Mass; and because there will be some noise in all that has to be done we need to cancel the regular confessions
along with the regular morning Mass. All will return to normal the Saturday a er Confirma ons. This is a once a year
cancela on of the morning Mass & evening confessions.
After the evening Mass there will be a photo session in the church with the Bishop and newly confirmed. Next there is a customary
gathering of the priests and deacons with the Bishop. As a result we will be unable to cover the 8:00pm confessions. Once more,
please note, this is a once a year cancelation of the morning Mass & evening confessions.

Readings for the Week...
TODAY’S READINGS
First Reading — Before anything was created, the
wisdom of God was brought forth (Proverbs 8:22-31).
Psalm — O Lord, our God, how wonderful your name in
all the earth! (Psalm 8).
Second Reading — God’s love has been poured out into
our hearts through the Holy Spirit that has been given to
us (Romans 5:1-5).
Gospel — Everything that the Father has is mine; the
Spirit will take from what is mine and declare it to you
(John 16:12-15).

JOURNEY OF FAITH
We are on a long and eventful journey. Today’s
readings for Trinity Sunday succinctly cover the depth
and breadth of our human travels.
The very beginnings of our journey are revealed in
the reading from Proverbs. God’s plan filled with divine
wisdom was born before the earth was made. In today’s
Gospel, Jesus speaks of his own personal journey. He has
come from the Father and will return to the Father. Only
then will the Advocate—the Spirit of Truth—take us
onward.
This does not diminish the fact that the journey will
be hard. The very setting of the Gospel is the night before
Jesus died. As Saint Paul writes to the Romans, “[W]e
even boast of our afflictions, knowing that affliction
produces endurance, and endurance, proven character,
and proven character, hope” (Romans 5:3-4).
Ultimately, our human journey is modeled by the
Holy Trinity—a family of love among Father, Son, and
Spirit that we are all called to emulate.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Around the turn of the fourth century, Augustine, still
fairly fresh from the baptismal waters in Milan, was
elected bishop of a tiny city in North Africa, Hippo. He
told his people, “While I am frightened by what I am for
you, then I am consoled by what I am with you. For you I
am a bishop, with you I am a Christian.” He had his
priorities right, and also knew that everyone coming from
the water arises with a ministry, a specific role, in
bringing about God’s kingdom.
If we were asked to purge English of Greek
vocabulary, we would gain an insight into key ministries
in our church. Bishop, from the Greek episkopos, would
become simply “overseer;” priest, from the Greek
presybter, would become “elder;” and deacon, from the
Greek diakonos, would be “servant.” Each title stands in
relationship to all the baptized, serving the community,
helping it to be the Body of Christ. In our deepest
tradition, each of these ordained ministries is attuned to
help us become our best selves, to hunger and thirst for
the coming of God’s kingdom. The goal for each one of
us is to be able to recognize the presence of Christ in
worship and in service. Although only some of us are
ordained to ministry, each of us is called to ministry.

FATHER JEFFREY DEIKEL
In 2012 a er seven years of ministry as an Associate

2012.

Tuesday, May 17 at 11:00am at Our Lady of the Valley in
Canoga Park. It was a beau ful Mass following which
Father Jeff’s interment was at San Fernando Mission
Cemetery in Mission Hills. Thank you to the priests and
deacons along with parishioners from Sacred Heart who
were present for his Funeral Mass.
Catholic Men’s Fellowship
Catholic Men’s Fellowship is a lay apostolate for
men who seek to know, love and serve the Lord. We
recognize our need for support and accountability to
grow in faith and fulfill our vocation.
At Sacred Heart Church we meet on the first
and third Wednesdays of the month in Cavanagh
Hall. Doors open at 6:30 PM for fellowship.
Meetings are from 7-9 PM.

PRAYER FOR PARISH PRIESTS
A rosary is being said each week in the
Parish Center Chapel on Thursdays, at 9:15 AM, for
the benefit of our Parish Priests. Please be part of
providing this support for all they do. Everyone is
welcome to come and participate.
MEMORIAL MASS AT OUR PARISH
To assist those who find it difficult to get to Canoga Park
and to allow us as a parish to both mourn Father Jeff’s
passing as well as to give thanks for his priesthood we
will celebrate a Memorial Mass in his honor and memory
on:
Monday + June 6, 2016 + 5:30pm Mass
Father Jeff will be greatly missed. We have all come to
appreciate and love his quick wit and his very special
sense of humor. Many parishioners suggested he should
have had a regular stand-up comedy rou ne! He
brought smiles to every face in the parish and a laugh to
every heart and soul. He was always warm, loving and
friendly.
I personally will miss the many ways he was a helpful
friend to me, offering generously to fill in for me or cover
for me here and there so that I could be free to deal with
some crisis. I never told him I needed help; rather he
had a sixth sense that always realized when I could use a
helping hand. He reminded me of Radar on the TV series
MASH.
Father Jeff was originally ordained for the Archdiocese of
Washington, D.C. in 1976 and was celebra ng his 40th
anniversary of priesthood this May 2016. Born April 18,
1950 he died on April 25th, just one week a er his 66th
birthday.
Please remember him in your prayers. I pray you can
join us for his Funeral Mass &/or Memorial Mass.

The Vatican is sending the people of California a
special gift.
Vatican Splendors: A Journey of Faith and Art opened
at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and

The exhibition is one of the largest Vatican collections
ever to tour North America, with over 200 objects
including personal mementos from both His Holiness
Pope Benedict and Pope Saint John Paul II.
From the sights and sounds for the grand Basilica to a
touchable cast of Saint John Paul II’s Hand, it’s true

artistic, and ceremonial treasures. It’s a lesson for us
all to better understand our history and faith presented
in both English and Spanish.

llamados a emular.

salvaguardada.
