Lakeridge Announcements
Speaker Stephen Nasser
Tuesday, Feb. 9th at 9:00 A.M.
Internationally known author, Lecturer & Playwright, Stephen Nasser will speak to all 9th Graders. His
topic: Family Values--Appreciation of Freedom—Lessons He Learned as a Survivor of the Holocaust.
In 1944, the Nazis took 13-year-old Nasser and 21 members of his family members to Auschwitz and
Muhldorf Concentration Camps. He was the only member of his family to survive that horrendous
experience. While in the camps, he secretly wrote a diary of what later became his book, My
Brother’s Voice.
That award-winning book described in detail Nasser’s experience while a prisoner of the
Nazis. Because of great demand he wrote the heartwarming story Journey to Freedom. It continues
where My Brother's Voice left off.
My Brother’s Voice ($18.00) and Journey to Freedom ($20.00) is available for purchase after his
lecture. (Cash or checks only). Checks should be payable to Stephen Nasser.
He will autograph each copy.
Parents are welcome!
Worth noting is that Nasser was honored by the City of Las Vegas on Aug. 6, 2008 when the day was
declared “Stephen Nasser Day.” Also noteworthy is that Nasser was acknowledged with certificates
from the Senate, Congress, FBI and several public offices for his humanitarian lectures.
Lunchtime Learning
What is Lunchtime Learning?
We at Lakeridge want every ninth grade student that comes through our school to move on to high
school on track for graduation. Lunchtime Learning is a credit recovery program designed to assist
ninth grade students who have failed classes to recover credit lost before leaving Lakeridge.
Our administrators carefully select the students that could benefit from this program and assign them
to attend Lunchtime Learning. Students assigned to Lunchtime Learning receive a pink slip delivered
to their classroom each day indicating that they need to report for lunch. We meet in room 213.
Students bring their lunch and they work on missing assignments while they eat. We work closely
3
with teachers in tracking students’ progress to help them make up the credit as soon as possible.
Once all deficient credit has been made up, students are free to attend their normal lunch.
Yearbook Applications
Yearbook Applications are ready. Please pick the application in the office or print
online http://rocque.wikispaces.com/yearbook. Applications are due Friday, February 26, 2016.
Media Center
Battle of the Books
The Lakeridge Library is sponsoring our annual Battle of the Books competition. It will March 24-25th,
during FLEX. Students will sign-up here in the library to form their team of four students. They will
compete in a Knowledge Bowl type of competition. There will be great prizes!
Battle Books







Blood of Olympus
Rise of Elgen
Ruins of Gorland
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children

These books are among the most popular books checked out from our library here at Lakeridge.
Come and join the battle!

Honors English
Attention 8th Grade Students and Parents of 8th Grade Students:
It is time to sign up for 9th grade English Honors. Pick up an application from your 8th grade English
teacher, the counseling office, or Ms. Schlosser in room 263 beginning February 1. Applications and
essays are due by Friday, March 18.
Honors English is a yearlong course that involves more work for the dedicated advanced student.
Required reading will be both individual books and teacher assigned books. Books read will be a
combination of classical literature, historical fiction, and non-fiction. Students will also be required to
write in several different genres: argument, narrative, and exposition; several short and long essays
will be written during the year. The goal is for students to explore literature, to dive deeply into inquiry,
and to apply critical thinking skills to come to new understandings, as well as to gain practice in
literary analysis.
National Junior Honor Society
To become a member of the most prestigious, recognized academic organization for students in the
Nation, pick up an application from Mrs. Hunter, room 120 for the NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR
SOCIETY. These are due, without exception, Friday, February 12! 7th, 8th or 9th grade students
may qualify if they have:





At least 3.8 or higher cumulative grade point average (Scholarship)
Leadership
Character
Service
Citizenship (no U’s)
Students must also pick up a green evaluation form to give to each of their LAST TERM teachers
(confidential, which will be returned by the teacher to Mrs. Hunter). The National Association has
raised the National Affiliation fees substantially this year, as well as for their materials for the
members that have to be ordered. As a result, it has been necessary to increase Lakeridge fees also.
However, compare the amount required to be on sports teams, or to be a cheerleader, for example,
(up to $500 each year!), a fee of $25 a year is a very low amount, especially considering the
Academic advantages it offers, and what the dues cover:






National affiliation renewal of Lakeridge charter
Gold embossed certificate of membership
Membership pin awarded in 9th grade
Jr. Honor Society cords to wear at 9th grade graduation
Funds for 2 service projects a year
Funds to provide meat for the final school service project/social
5




Provides excellent references for resume and future membership in National Honor Society in
High School.
Association & influence of outstanding high-achieving students
A STEP UP ON THE LADDER OF ACCOMPLISHMENT!!!
An investment in your academic future
Current members need not reapply.
Social Studies
Social Studies teacher, Merinda Davis, had the opportunity to visit schools and conduct professional
development in Hong Kong this January. She visited various types of schools (private, international,
and public) to bring best practices back to Lakeridge. Gaining not only educational strategies, she
also brought back cultural resources for her classes. Mrs. Davis is excited to share more from her trip;
look for it in upcoming newsletters, and on the school website!
