Furniture industry looks to continue growth
or five years, we’ve been
hearing about the “down
economy,” the “fragile
economy” and other similar terms.
The Great Recession is still
fresh on most people’s minds.
Not that you could tell by
looking at Wall Street.
Last year was a very good year
for investors in large-, mid- and
small-cap stocks. How good was
it? Consider:
• The blue-chip Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 7.26 percent.
• The S&P 500 index gained
13.4 percent in 2013, its largest
annual return since 2009 and
the fourth-largest in the past
decade.
• The Nasdaq composite index
rose nearly 16 percent, compared to a drop of 1.8 percent in
2011.
• The Russell 2000 index
gained 14.7 percent.
Also, 128 companies went
public, the second-highest
number of IPOs in the past five
years.
Unemployment, while still relatively high, is no longer in double digits.
All these
numbers suggest the economic trends
are going in the
right direction.
Yet there still
is lingering economic uncerDENNIS
tainty. It’s as if
we’re
waiting
SEID
for that other
shoe to drop.
We just don’t
know when or how big it is.
Maybe we got some idea at
the start of the year. We pulled
back from the fiscal cliff, but our
nation’s debt, spending and revenue plans are anything but settled. Washington seems to be
headed toward another gridlock.
Uncertainty in Washington
leads to uncertainty on Wall
Street, and that’s not good for
consumer or investor confidence.
We can take a look at any sector of the economy and talk
about how it can be affected by
uncertainty. In Northeast Mississippi, it’s manufacturing – particularly furniture
manufacturing - to which we’re
most attuned. It employs some
20,000 people directly and indirectly.
There’s no doubt the recession
took its toll on the industry. With
the housing market taking a
beating during the downturn,
the furniture industry suffered
mightily. Fewer homes meant
fewer furniture sales.
But we’ve seen good signs of
recovery in housing, welcome
news for the furniture industry.
Last year, existing home sales
and new home sales rose at the
highest level since 2007.
Furniture Today anticipates
another good year. In its 2013
economic forecast, Furniture
Today said overall sales should
grow about 4.3 percent, to about
$87.8 billion. This year should be
the fourth consecutive year of
sales increases. In fact, should
the numbers hold up, sales will
be the highest since the peak
years of 2006 and 2007, when
sales reached nearly $92 billion.
Those big numbers bode well
for Northeast Mississippi as
well. Long the “upholstered furniture capital of the world,” the
region boasts of more than 200
manufacturers and suppliers
that provide nearly a third of
the nation’s upholstered furniture.
Think about that: From our
little area of the Deep South,
our region puts furniture in
homes and offices from coast
to coast.
That, according to Mississippi State University’s Franklin
Furniture Institute, leads to the
furniture industry contributing
$2.1 billion of the state’s $84.3
billion in total economic output.
So all the signs are pointing
in the right direction.
Now if we can get Washington to cooperate, we can keep
them pointed that way.

Furniture market focusing on buyers

TUPELO – The fall Tupelo Furniture Market last
August wasn’t even over
when work began for the
upcoming spring show.
After what many consider one of the market’s
best shows in several years,
officials quickly latched on
to the momentum generated by the silver anniversary celebration.
The goal: bring more
people, specifically buyers,
to the market.
“We’ve concentrated on
buyer recruitment,” said
TFM President Kevin Seddon. “We got everyone together to find the largest
buyers, medium-range, regional, the top 100, etc. We
wanted to know who the
exhibitors wanted to see,
who are the next 500 to
1,000 buyers.”
With several hundred exhibitors already in place,
the key to a successful market is having the people to
visit and place orders in
those showrooms.
TFM officials hired additional staff, including Candice Hall, the new director
of buyer recruitment. Their
charge: to scour the country to introduce – or reintroduce – the Tupelo
Furniture Market to buyers
and retailers.
The results so far have
been very encouraging.
Preregistration for the
spring market are up more
than 50 percent compared
to last year, market officials
said. Thirty percent of that
number are coming to the
market for the first time.
“We’ve called people
across the country,” Seddon said.
Part of the recruiting
pitch to buyers has been to
emphasize Tupelo’s niche.
“We have 145 companies
here that don’t show in either High Point or Las
Vegas,” Seddon said. “So if
you’re thinking you’ll see
the same thing at the other
markets, we can show that
we do have something different.”
In addition, the spring
market has at least 70 companies showing for the first
time.
“Tupelo’s reach is national in scope, and many
internationals attend this
event,” said Chris Bray, vice
president of sales and marketing for Pontotoc-based
upholstered manufacturer
Delta Furniture Manufacturing. “We have found
over many years of participating in these events that
if we show in Tupelo, which
is located nearer the center
of the United States, we can
expect to draw buyers from
throughout the country.
And we have also determined, as have many other
companies that exhibit in
Tupelo, that we write a lot
of orders during this event.
We see just about everyone
we need to see here in Tupelo.”
Perhaps one of the
biggest components of the
buyer-centric focus has
been the market’s “Matchmaker” initiative.
The program has three
main components overseen by the TFM sales staff,
buyer recruitment personnel and marketing department:

and preregistered buyers
interested in meeting.
• On-site meetings
scheduled by the market’s
buyer recruitment department.
• Post-show communication and promotion between
buyers
and
exhibitors.
Hall said the program is
designed with the buyer in
mind. Rather than browsing through nearly 2 million square feet of
exhibition space, buyers
can use the Matchmaker
program to find specific exhibitors. The program also
helps exhibitors by bringing in additional buyers
who might have overlooked them.
“It gives buyers a road
map,” Hall said. “The program is much like a
concierge service.”
In addition to the Matchmaker program, the market
also has developed what it
calls a “hosted buyer package” in which some of the
market’s leading exhibitors
provide a top buyers list.
The market’s buyer recruit-
ment department puts together a package that
might include airfare,
transportation, hotel accommodations and other
amenities. That doesn’t
mean the market is springing all the bills, however.
What the market does do is
help coordinate the efforts
to make a buyer’s visit to
Tupelo as easy as possible.
You make them happy,
and they’ll come back.
And the Matchmaker
program isn’t the only new
initiative the market is
using to entice buyers and
retailers.
The “Show Your Badge”
program will allow registered market attendees to
take advantage of specials
and discounts at area hotels, restaurants and attractions participating in the
program.
And for the first time in
several years, the market is
offering free seminars and
business consultations.
Those events are geared toward retailers who might
be looking for advice to run
their furniture stores.
The reaction to the market’s initiatives has been
positive, Seddon said, with
anticipation that the spring
market will continue the
excitement generated from
last fall.
“For me, I thought we had
a great event,” he said. “We
wanted to reach out to more
buyers and focus on getting
them here for this market.”

Ashley expanding again in region

VERONA – Ashley Furniture Industries, already employing
about
3,000
workers at two manufacturing plants in Northeast
Mississippi, will add more
with a third plant.
The Arcadia,Wisc.-based
company recently acquired
the former Morgan Fabrics
warehouse in Verona. The
275,000-square-foot plant
will be used to produce
mattresses and sofa sleepers. It also will serve as a
customer support center
and will distribute replacement parts.
Terms of the deal were
undisclosed, but the company received financial assistance
from
the
Mississippi Development
Authority and the Tupelobased Community Development Foundation.
MDA will help with road
improvements with a
$165,673 Community Development Block Grant.
“We are always excited to
see an existing Mississippi
business expand its opera-
tions and create new jobs
for our state’s workers,”
MDA Executive Director
Brent Christensen said. “I
am pleased MDA was able
to assist Ashley with this
project, and I thank both
the company for its ongoing investment in our state
and our partners in Lee
County who worked with
us to make this project possible. We wish Ashley many
more years of success in
north Mississippi.”
Ashley’s mattress and
sofa operations in Verona
will occupy about 150,000
square feet for manufacturing, with about 60 jobs during the first phase of
development. Production
will begin this summer, the
company said.
The call center and replacement parts operations will open by the end
of the year. The company
didn't say how many jobs
might be created with the
start of those operations.
“Ashley Furniture Industries has been a valued
business in Mississippi for
nearly two decades and has
created thousands of jobs
for our workers and contributed significantly to our
state’s economy,” said Gov.
Phil Bryant. “I am grateful
to Ashley officials for once
again expanding their Mississippi operations.”
The Verona facility, once
a distribution center for
Morgan Fabrics, sits on 35
acres at the Tupelo Lee Industrial Park South and can
be expanded if needed.
Ashley President and
CEO Todd Wanek, who attended Gov. Bryant's State
of the State address, said
the plant’s location was
ideal since it “is close in
proximity to Ashley’s existing facilities in Ripley and
Ecru, serviced by a rail line,
and located in a foreign
trade zone.”
Privately held Ashley is
the largest furniture manufacturer, supplier and retailer in North America,
with more than $3 billion in
annual sales. It has been in
Mississippi since 1994. The
company says it has a $200
million annual economic
impact in the state.

Okla. company finds home in Tupelo

TUPELO – Once a month,
in conjunction with the Tupelo Flea Market, FFO
Home opens its doors.
The furniture store is located in the former Mississippi Complex of theTupelo
Furniture Market at the
Coley Road/Chesterville
Road intersection.
But how does a furniture
retailer stay in business
when’s it’s open only three
days a month?
You have to know more
about FFO Home.
It’s not a Tupelo-only
store. In fact, the company,
based in Muldrow, Okla.,
has more than 30 stores in
Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri
and Kansas. And all the
other stores have more traditional hours.
The Tupelo store is more
of a prototype. Behind the
store, filling more than
60,000 square feet, is a warehouse used by the company
to sort, package and ship
furniture to its other stores.
Trucks roll out of the warehouse daily.
The Tupelo retail store
happened more by accident
than design.
“We were looking for a rebranding and identifying
with our shoppers and how
smart they are today and
how they shop,” said Larry
Rainwater, chief operating
officer of FFO Home. That
was in October 2011.
At the time, the company
was called Furniture Factory
Outlet – the “FFO” in the
name. And the old name
pretty much said it all: The
company was a factory outlet.
That
hasn’t
really
changed. The company still
sells furniture that are manufacturers’ overruns or
closeouts. But it’s also added
bedding and accessories – a
growing part of furniture retailing. By shortening the
old name and adding
“home,” the new name better matches what the company does, Rainwater said.
“We opened the Tupelo
store just to see what would
happen, just to do a little
selling,” he said. “A lot of the
management team was
here anyway during those
weekends, and we decided
why not go ahead and sell
some of it while we’re already here.”

Home guarantees it will
have the lowest price for its
furniture because of the nature of its business model.
Inventory is limited to
what’s on hand. What is on
the sales floor one day may
be gone the next month or
even the next day. It’s firstcome, first-serve. The oneof-a-kind merchandise is
priced to sell.
There are no rain checks,
no special-order fabrics or
custom design.
“What you see is what
you get,” Rainwater said.
So sure that FFO Home
has the lowest prices, Rainwater makes a bold guarantee.
“If customers do find the
same merchandise somewhere cheaper, we’ll refund
your money. And you keep
the furniture,” he said.
Rainwater said nobody
has taken him up on the
offer yet in Tupelo.
“That’s because we know
we’ll have the lowest price.”
Other stores have made
good on the guarantee a few
times, but Rainwater said
they were rare occurrences.
FFO Home’s Tupelo store

feet but Rainwater said it
will expand later this year, as
will its warehouse.

supply of merchandise from
furniture manufacturers.
And being in the center of
the upholstered furniture
capital of the world has its
advantages, too. The company works with many of

A company may have
over-produced a certain
line or seeks to quickly
move a line that didn’t sell
particularly well. Or another retailer may have
canceled an order and a
factory is looking to get rid
of it. FFO Home swoops in
to put the merchandise in
its stores.
Rainwater says FFO
Home doesn’t carry the
overhead and marketing
costs traditional retailers
have, another reason why
his prices are lower.
The Tupelo store in particular has done well because of the savvy buying
public.
“People are very familiar
with the furniture industry,
and they have a good idea of
what it costs,” he said.
“We’re not for everybody,
but there are always people
looking for good deals, and
we think we have the best
ones.”

services.

V’s.

The tenth annual Northeast Mississippi Economic Forecast Conference
featured perspectives on the economy by Ari Fleischer, former White
House press secretary; Brent Christensen, Mississippi Development Authority Executive Director; and David Copenhaver, CDF Board Chairman.

e-BEAT Seminars
for Small Business
A seminar series created
to assist local business
owners enhance their internet skills is soon to begin
in Lee County. The Lee
County Library and Community
Development
Foundation (CDF) are
combining efforts to provide residents a series of
four seminars that will address the basics of using
broadband technology to
promote their business.
The seminars are part of
a state initiative designed
to help Mississippians use
broadband and information technology to further
community and economic
development opportuni-
ties. The Extension Broadband Education and Adoption Team (e-BEAT) was
created as part of a grant
from the Governor's office
and made possible by the
American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act. Regional
broadband coordinators
on the team bring training
directly to Mississippi communities. Training is tailored to the specific needs
of the area, and in this series will focus on e-commerce strategies for small
businesses.
The broadband coordinator for Region 6, which
includes Lee County, is
Charles “Chip” Templeton,
a Starkville native and longtime businessman. Templeton serves as regional
coordinator for 19 northeast Mississippi counties,
and will lead the training
sessions. A 1977 MSU marketing graduate, Templeton
owned and operated Templeton Motors, Inc. in
Starkville for 28 years.

will begin in March, and
will be held from 4:00 – 5:00
p.m. on the first Tuesday of
the month. The Lee County
